summary This paper looks at two distinct approaches to kinetic façades and smart building assemblies reminiscent of designs for the Institut du Monde Arabe and for Hoberman's Simon Center. The first approach uses Arduino microcontroller-guided kinetic components with a distinct assemblage of elements, each performing a dedicated function such as sensor, actuator, or logical processing unit. The second approach incorporates custom-designed smart materials-shape memory alloys (SMAs)-that not only complement or replace the need for electrically operated sensors or actuators, but also eliminate a microcontroller, since in this arrangement the material itself performs computational functions. The paper will discuss case studies that use physical computing and smart-material models as vehicles to discuss the value of each approach to adaptive design in architecture. Building on these observations, the paper looks into conceptual aspects of an integrated hybrid system that combines both computation approaches and unique opportunities inherent to these hybrid designs.

title An Inquiry into Designing in Context using Generative Systems

summary The use of generative systems has been widely investigated in the architectural design process through different procedures and levels of autonomy to generate form.The digression from abstract pre- existing notions of vocabulary and rules – even when resulting in emergent forms – to address complex real- world contexts is yet a challenging undertaking.This paper explores incorporating context in the process of designing using generative systems from ideation to fabrication, and explores the relationship between the emergent nature of generative design and the situated act of designing while using generative design tools.A course offered for 3rd year architecture students at the Department of Architecture, Ain Shams University, Egypt, was designed for this purpose. 110 students employed systems including shape grammars, L- systems, fractals and cellular automata, to design and fabricate 8 group projects.A discussion around emergence and situatedness is presented, with special attention to the designing process from ideation to fabrication.

summary We present a pilot study aiming to explore the use of biometrics sensing technology within a semi-immersive VR environment, where users face architectural spaces which induce them sensations close to fear of heights, claustrophobia, frustration and relief. Electrodermal activity was used to detect users’ emotional arousal, while navigating in VR. Navigation conditions and participants’ expertise with games were controlled. Main results show that physiological measurement of user’s perceptions can discriminate well "positive" from "negative" spaces, providing designers with basic information on people’s emotional state when using the buildings they design.

summary This paper focuses on an investigation to explore architectural design potentials with a responsive material system and physical computing. Contemporary architects and designers are seeking to integrate physical computing in responsive architectural designs; however, they have largely borrowed from engineering technology’s mechanical devices and components. There is the opportunity to investigate an unexplored design approach to exploit the responsive capacity of material properties as alternatives to the current focus on mechanical components and discrete sensing devices. This opportunity creates a different design paradigm for responsive architecture that investigates the potential to integrate physical computing with responsive materials as one integrated material system. Instead of adopting highly intricate and expensive materials, this approach is explored through accessible and off-the-shelf materials to form a responsive material system, called Lumina. Lumina is implemented as an architectural installation called Cloud that serves as a morphing architectural skin. Cloud is a proof of concept to embody a responsive material system with physical computing to create a reciprocal and luminous architectural intervention for a selected dark corridor. It represents a different design paradigm for responsive architecture through alternative exploitation of contemporary materials and parametric design tools.

summary Parallel to the early development and recent widespread usage of composite materials in building and manufacturing, the concept of functionally graded materials (FGM) was initiated and developed as far back as the 1980s. In contrast to the composite paradigm, where layers of materials are glued and 'cooked' together under high pressure and temperature to form laminated parts, FGM are singular materials that vary their consistency gradually over their volume. In direct link to their increasing use in fields adjacent to architecture, the scope of the paper is to explore a possible design route for designing with FGM. Of a limited number of available CAD software where material properties can be graded, the intent of the design for a materially graded windbreak module is to utilize particle systems as a technique for simulating fields of interacting, information-loaded material point sets that can be fused together in a gradient manner.

summary This paper presents an interactive fenestration system designed for the principal façade of a prototype sustainable dwelling. The system attains autonomous, responsive and interactive modes of operation, and is able to provide synchronous response to a wide variety of environmental conditions and user needs. The method to address the design of the system was to integrate electro-active materials and real time sensing and control technologies. The test was to implement a full-scale façade with the abovementioned capabilities. This presentation discusses the features, technologies and reasoning followed in the design and implementation of the façade.

summary The need for increased automation of the AEC sector has been extensively documented within the architectural discipline over recent years. Far beyond economic perspectives, current advances in technology offer an increased and more direct implementation of sustainable materials. Within this research, the potential for the re-use of material with low embodied energy within automated construction will be examined. Herefore, Remote Material Deposition (RDM, firstly described in Dörfler et al., 2014) is utilized as main fabrication method, deploying varying compositions of local building debris, lime mortar, and sand, via a throwing arm. This research explores a method of continuous verification of material deployment and removal of material oversaturation to guarantee accuracy. Herefore, all instances of the robot ecology are in direct communication with one another and the user for verification, adaptation, and information. The proposed framework is examined through experimentation by designing, building, and implementing an inter-communicative network of bespoke semi-autonomous robots with all proposed parts of the system.

summary A new high-rise building, when inserted in an existing urban environment, cannot have all the floor plans identical since the visual and environmental constraints change from floor to floor due to the interference of neighboring buildings, sun light, prevailing wind and noise. So how can we design a building that takes into consideration all this variables? How can digital design tools help? (DELPINO, 2014). We believe that a building like that can be designed constructing facade maps which allow a floor by floor analysis considering visual, wind, noise and sun light constraints. We believe that facade maps analysis and their superposition provide clues of how each floor plan can be built to provide comfort and to take most advantage of the view. (DELPINO, 2014). We believe that variation techniques such as tessellation and morphing can provide the formal bases for such design. summary This research investigates the aesthetics of a shared agency between humans, computation and physical material. ‘Chocolate’ is manipulated in physical and virtual space simultaneously to extract aesthetic conditions that are a sum of human and non-human relations. This is an attempt to further the knowledge of designing, giving physical and digital materials force in determining their own aesthetics. The research springs from work in speculative aesthetics, particularly N. Katherine Hayles’s OOI (object-oriented inquiry) and Graham Harman’s OOO (object-oriented ontology) and explores how these ideas impact contemporary computational architectural design. To study this, a simple material has been chosen, chocolate, and used as a vehicle to investigate the dynamics of physical and digital materials and their shared/differing ‘resistances to human manipulation’ (Pickering 1995). Digital chocolate is ‘melted’ through virtual heat, and the results printed and cast in real chocolate, to be further manipulated in real space. The resistances and feedback of physical and digital chocolate to human ‘prodding’ (Hayles 2014) are analyzed in terms of a material’s qualities and tendencies in digital space versus those in physical space. Observations from this process are used to speculate on an aesthetics where humans, computation and physical material are mutually agential. This research is a pilot for a larger study taking on more complex conditions, such as building and cities, with a view to broadening how aesthetics is understood in architectural design. The contribution of this research to the field of architectural computation is thus in areas of aesthetic speculation and human/non-human architectural authorship.

summary "The movement of building façade cladding is usually used to control buildings’ exposure to environmental conditions such as direct sunlight, noise and wind. Until recently, technology and cost constraints allowed for only limited types of façade cladding movement. One of the main restrictions stemmed from the limitations that architects face in designing and controlling movement scenarios in which each façade or cladding element moves autonomously. The introduction of parametric design tools for architectural design, combined with the advent of inexpensive sensor/actuator microcontrollers, made it possible to explore ways to overcome this limitation. Autonomous movement of building façade cladding elements has several potential benefits. One of the main feasible advantages of this type of movement is that it can deal with changing external and interior local conditions in different parts of the façade by individually controlled movement, by preceding reaction or flock behaviour. Thus, it can increase significantly the performance of the building façade. This paper presents new results from an ongoing research study that is examining the potential of autonomous movement of façade cladding elements. It compares the environmental performance of centrally controlled kinetic façade elements and a prototypic façade made of autonomously controlled elements.

summary This paper presents a computational design methodology through describing of a case study on stone building system. In addition to establishing a performance driven form-finding methodology, the objective is to redefine local craftsmanship methods as industrial fabrication techniques in order to introduce the constructability of the design solutions as one of the main performance criteria. Therefore, the focus of the methodology is to facilitate architectural design processes through developing of customized computational design tools and workflows for data integration and concurrent performance evaluation. The research starts with the hypothesis that the technological advancements in digital design and fabrication can lead to re-exploration and improvement of traditional building techniques with local materials. The paper explains different stages of the methodology and the way the chained design to fabrication processes would lead to constructible, structurally possible and optimal design solutions of small scale and simple symmetric design solutions to complex topologies at the scale of larger complex buildings.

summary This proposal is a continuation of a body of work we call ‘objects wrapped in objects’, which deals with discrete, chunky objects gathered and squished together in a sack. This strategy creates complex interstitial spaces and layered interiority, making the contemporary museum a space of surprises and discrete experiences rather than an endless continuum of paths. Tristan Garcia, the object-oriented philosopher, talks about the infinite regress of things inside of things inside of things, except the world, which everything is inside of and therefore cannot itself be inside of something else. For him, the concept of a ‘sack’, literally, is a diagram of the conundrum of how things can simultaneously be autonomous from one another but also contain other things. This conundrum is the core of our proposal, in that the building should appear simultaneously as multiple autonomous objects but also as a larger, emergent object with its own properties. The vibration between these two ways of existing creates a visual indeterminacy that is alluring and durable.On the south side facing the Park, the sack is sliced open to reveal an incongruent inner world of stepped and stacked public space. This space is formed by way of an inner liner, which delaminates from the sack surface. Permanent gallery spaces are housed in the space between liner and sack. The building is re-enclosed with a glass membrane which is not coincident with the sack silhouette, creating an open-endedness or deferral of interiority in the project. Black jack-like objects house various other functions such as the temporary galleries, theaters, research area, library, and offices. The interstitial spaces between objects and sack are technically exterior space, but they are enclosed with infill glazing deep inside reveals. These spaces are inhabitable and contain the primary circulation of the building.The sack is articulated with architectural tattoos that subvert subdivision logics in favor of the freeform figuration allowed by composite construction. Tattoos are executed in such a way as to blur the edge between discrete objects and visually re-establish the larger object, as if qualities from the black objects begin to loosen and drift onto the sack. Finally, the building is squished into a ‘ground object’ which is in turn squished into the land. The looseness between building and ground object allows for passage underneath the building. The looseness between ground object and land emphasizes the object-hood of the building complex. This move contrasts with exhausted ideas of buildings becoming landscape or otherwise disappearing into context

summary Creativity with its various processes is involved in all design actions. Creativity used in architectural design is different than creativity in other domains. However, creativity in general with its related cognition processes has no general theory. This research proposes certain activities of initial architectural design phases in which the role of activity is important. The research proceeds to present a case study of two architectural design studios in which a VR environment is employed in order to investigate the effect of VR use on the creativity in those initial design phases. The research applies a methodology of qualitative and quantitative analysis. Various architectural design factors are neutralized to overcome the influence generated from human factors variation and design thinking prejudice on architectural designing and the associated creativities.

summary This study sought to characterise students’ design activity while designing with Computer Aided Design (CAAD) professional programs and its impact on the students’ design process. The design protocol participants were final year students (architectural design and architectural technology), who have spent at least four years in a school of architecture and were confident CAAD users. The analysis represents four CAAD-based protocols of final year students at a school of architecture. The analysed protocols varied in more than one aspect. This variation includes: (1) programs, (2) the mode of using programs whether single or multiple, (3) protocol segments (total number, duration and frequencies), and (4) design categories and total time spent in designing. In light of the study results, the participants demonstrated that, for the same design problem, restraining the conceptual design medium would not necessarily bind them to a certain design strategy. However, there are some disciplinary differences between AD and AT final year students, on how CAAD is used during to solve conceptual design.

summary This paper presents a context based framework for introducing digital modelling and fabrication to architecture students. Modelling has being taught either as a separate skill, or introduced within a comprehensive context of conventional design approaches. We argue that, a ‘digestive context’ might guide students to gain designing experience with/in digital media in a gradual and a cumulative way. This paper is based on a series of modelling and fabrication exercises as part of a one-semester digital design and modelling studio course for postgraduate students. We focus on the impact the initial exercises we assigned our students had on the final design product; We discuss the affordance and adaptability of the method that was developed by the students.

summary Children are entitled to equal access to education; this applies to the classroom setting. The classroom size, shape and layout are commonly taken for granted and little consideration is taken to how this affects the learning experience. This paper argues that the traditional classroom environment does not allow for equal interaction between teachers and pupils. Preliminary findings of a case study in 4 classrooms in Uruguay are presented. The conclusions suggest that not all pupils in the classroom receive quality interaction with the teacher. A more comprehensive approach to designing spaces that are conducive to learning will benefit this interaction.

summary The digital age is facilitating an ever increasing trend of globalized language and culture. Environmental issues are no longer a static concept as climate change and population growth force concepts of adaptability. What does this mean for the academy? How do we educate students to contemplate future urban scenarios and make some organization out of this more dynamic, complex future? The following paper seeks to disseminate a spring 2014 design studio at The University of Arizona where these issues were addressed, with Mexico City as a test bed. Computation has become a vital tool in the organizational process of these complex issues and big data. Various digital tools and platforms were explored in the studio to determine which ones would be most useful in modeling, mapping, designing and processing some of the complex relationships that are present in urban environments today.

summary It is a fact that the Animation and architecture have common and strong bonds in various forms. According to animators, and architects as well, there are two main and vital concepts which are the basics of animation, they are Timing and Spacing. The paper represents an analogy between animation and architecture focusing on these two concepts. So, in the following sections we discover the relation between animation and deforming geometry in architecture. By looking through the history and theory of architecture we find many architects' attempts to apply animation as a concept within their forms. This paper will review what pioneers have achieved in designing through animation. At the end of the paper a case study is being analyzed by showing how the concept of animation is applied to an existing building due to the research's main points.

summary This paper presents the analysis of four design protocols, using linkography, to characterise participants' design interaction and activity while designing with CAAD programs. The participants were final year students, who have spent at least four years in a school of architecture and were confident CAAD users. The conceptual structure and linkability of ideas was assessed using the Linkography method. The findings demonstrated that, for the same design problem, the conceptual structure and linkability of ideas can be assessed using the Linkography method. Furthermore, what characterised the continuity of CAAD design protocols is the number of ideas in association with design moves along the timeline of the design process.
