summary The paper illustrates the architectural capacities of combining computational methods, such as genetic algorithms, acoustic simulation and parametric modeling, with material properties and a simple spatial programme in the developing of a performative and aesthetical sound based architecture. title Temporary Architecture: An urban mirage

summary One of the emerging multidisciplinary contemporary art practices is interactive installation art, which is concerned with constructing a temporary artistic environment that is digital, responsive and engaging. It is usually displayed within existing architectural context whether indoor in a gallery space or outdoor in a public space. Recent examples of such art projects show that interactivity and illusion are effectively present and highly influential in the perception and memory of the place. A digital display on a building façade can remain attached to the history of the site in the spectator’s memory even after the display is removed. An interactive space that involves body response and emotional sensory interaction can determine the narrative perceived from the experience. These trends seemingly bring together the physical context and the digital space to contain the spectator. The two mediums are merged to provide a new genre of space, hence a new mode of perception where the art space mediates people’s movement and overlay the context with new meanings. Multiple backgrounds are involved in the creative process of interactive installation art, all of which involve examining various concepts through artistic engagement with temporary spaces. Here, particularly because of interactivity and immerseveness, the spectator becomes part of the performance (the subject); with his moving and reacting he activates the narrative and probably gives it its shape. This paper aims to explore the potentials of the digital spatial display to enhance or weaken our sense of belonging to the surrounding environments while creating an illusionary space within the real physical one. It also aims to discuss how this influence would affect the memory of the mixed experience; the installation being digital, temporary and illusive and the space being physical, permanent and real. What happens to the “spectator” when contained by the digital-interactive and the physical medium(s)?. In order to unfold the mentioned questions, the study uses theories of perception and performance reflected on live case studies of recent art projects where the researcher becomes a member of the audience and an observer at the same time in order to trace the journey inside this new medium. In an era where time is being more difficult to grasp and identities of visual culture is becoming more difficult to define, temporary responsive environments can provide some openings where space becomes durational, yet, influential, and where people’s movements become more meaningful in the visual terrain.

summary This paper introduces a new spatial analysis methodology based on visibility graphs. Through various design elements architects can create configurations where our visual field and the relations of spaces can be challenged in a combinatorial game beyond the easily accessible and understandable boundaries of the environment. This research explores the trans-spatial architectural elements, transparencies and projected realities that playfully challenge visibility, permeability and accessibility in built environment. The paper presents the computational problem of analysing spaces that include 'augmented visibilities' and areas with 'inaccessible but visible' locations, where dislocated multi-dimensional overlaps frequently occur. Furthermore, proposes a new 'mixed-directionality graph structure' and the definition of 'Augmented Visibility Graph Analysis' (AVGA) as a new spatial analysis methodology. AVGA overcomes limitations of current visibility graph analysis theories and allows the analysis of architectural and urban space that includes visuo-spatial overlaps, hybrid configurations and multi-dimensional information. Finally, a series of mathematical graph analysis measures and test cases associated with observations and experimental data from real spaces is presented in order to demonstrate AVGA.

summary The paper investigates the management of acoustic and privacy problems in open-plan spaces through the implementation of lightweight architectural partitions developed by origami tessellations. Integrating knowledge from parametric modelling, acoustics and design for user needs, a design tool for acoustically efficient, flexible, interior partition systems is developed. The paper elaborates on three components of the design tool: form generation, acoustic performance and spatial performance. The form generation component employs parametric models of origami tessellations to generate the partition system. The acoustic performance component employs acoustic simulation and prediction to regulate the containing volume as well as the system's surface materials. The spatial performance component evaluates form and material through qualitative criteria for privacy and flexibility according to user needs.

summary This paper presents an interactive bubble diagram developed to support design exploration. The proposed diagram consists of multiple goal-oriented agents, whose interaction with the user stimulates the analysis and exploration of new spatial patterns. Until now, there are two versions implemented. The first was developed combining scripting language and a graphical editor of algorithms embedded in modeling software. The second was developed with event-driven programming techniques emphasizing functions to amplify the interaction between user and agents. Finally, as the result of this exploratory stage of the research, we propose new paths of development for the next versions of the diagram.

summary Spatial configurations can be perceived through a variety of descriptions of their physical form and structure. Each description can offer an autonomous interpretation or be combined with others parathetically, in a logic of multiple distinct layers. However it is asserted that meaningful information can be extracted from a simultaneous view of sets of descriptions within a high-dimensional structure. This paper investigates the possibility of conducting a comparative analysis and classification of non-typical spatial formations based on the synchronous view of multiple quantifiable spatial attributes. Under the hypothesis of a reciprocal definition of spatial structure and occupation practices, it is intended to identify distinct generic spatial types in order to subsequently determine a range of suitable respective generic use types. This investigation supports the formulation of strategies for the reactivation of unused, residual urban voids, currently being addressed by the research programme titled "Strategies to network urban interventions in the Metropolitan Centre of Athens". The programme is carried out by the School of Architecture of the National Technical University of Athens in collaboration with the Region of Attica, under the scientific coordination of Professor Dr. Parmenidis (2013).

summary The integration of structural considerations in architectural geometry processing is among the topics most discussed in the complex shapes design. While some design tools allow the designer to begin with an inefficient form and then turn it into a more efficient one, other tools allow exploring and creating structural forms considering both formal and structural aspects from the beginning. This paper presents a parametric design approach to create spatial steel trusses with the combination of two strategies: (1) shell surface to set out structural elements; (2) cross section properties to ensure structural stability aspects. In this paper we discuss how the combination of these strategies can contribute to the use of parametric design techniques in the early stages of the design process, taking into account both structural optimization and production aspects.

summary Layout design has been supported by some computational tools, where fuzzy systems have been approved as an appropriate method to handle uncertainty in the early design stage. In this paper, a new mathematical model depending on the fuzzy logic and sets theory is proposed to assist in layout design. The model distinctly deals with spatial uncertainty in open planned designs, where there is no clear layout configuration or definite patterns of usage. The model calculates the possibility of occupancy according to space, function and user related parameters and logical rules. It also visualises the architectural plan as being comprised of sub-spaces formed by the distribution of those possibilities. Sub-spaces are characterised as “Fuzzy Architectural Spatial Objects” (FASOs). As a result, layouts are represented as an accumulation of FASOs showing a certain inhabitation pattern. Various layouts can be generated within the identity of FASOs. Architects can evaluate the layouts and propose new ones by organising the FASOs on the plan and considering their relations. After describing the model the paper demonstrates an application which aims to design a proper layout for a major exhibition hall in Istanbul.

Whereas, in modern architecture an intense and varied competition happens between architects through various currents of thoughts , schools and movements, however, that creativity was the ultimate goal , and a the same time we find that every architect distinguishes himself individually or collectively through tools of architectural expression and design representation adopting a school of thought, using , for example, the leaves of various sizes and diverse technical drawing tools to accurately show that he can be read by professionals or craftsmen outside the geographical scope to which it belongs .With the rapid technological development which accompanied the digital craft in the contemporary world , The digital craft summed up time, distance and tools , so they gave the concept more appropriate accuracy , as virtualization has become the most effective tool for Architecture To reach the ideal and typical results at the practical level, or pure research. At the level of residential design and on the grounds that housing plays an important role in the government policies and given that housing is a basic unit common to all urban communities on earth , the use of different programs to show its typicality in two dimensions or in the third dimension - for example, using software "AutoCAD " " 3D Max " , " ArchiCAD " ... etc. - gave virtualisation smart, creative and beautiful forms which lead to better understand the used /or to be used residential spaces, and thus the conclusion that the life system of dwelling under design or under study , as can specifically recognize spatial structure in housing design - using digital software applying "Space Syntax" for example - in the shadow of slowly growing digital and creative development with the help of high-speed computers . the morphological structure of the dwelling is considered to be the most important contemporary residential designs Investigation through which the researcher in this area aims to understand the various behavioral relations and social structures within the projected residential area, using Space Syntax techniques. Through the structural morphology of dwellings can be inferred quality networks, levels of connectivity and depth and places of openness or closure within the dwelling under study, or under design. How, then, have intelligently contributed this digital craft to the perception of those spatial fixtures ? The aim of this research is to apply an appropriate program in the field of vernacular residential design and notably Space syntax which relate to the understanding and analysis of spatial structures, and also demonstrate its role at the morphological and spatial structure aspects, and prove how effective it helps to understand the social logic of domestic space through social individual/collective relationships and behaviors projected on the spatial configurations of dwellings. The answer to the issue raised above and at the methodological aspect, the study discussed the application of space syntax techniques on the subject. The findings tend to prove the efficiency by comparing samples of Berber vernacular domestic spaces from the Mzab, the Aures and Kabilya in Algeria, and has also led to ascertain the intelligibility of space syntax techniques in reading the differences between the behaviors in domestic spaces in different areas of the sample through long periods of time .

summary Design Thinking recognizes processes linked to empathy, creation, prototyping and storytelling, that condition design methodologies to solve complex problems with user participation. From this perspective, next to disruptive practices, we present learning experiences focus in management, design and production of graphic databases in Web 2.0 and 3.0 contexts. They are linked to photomontages and graphic communication pieces of urban-architectural works and narratives that give meaning and entity to those interventions. We recorded results that value spatial thinking with images. Also the presence of traditional skills with hybrid skills in students, that encourage fluency, creativity and innovation, self-learning, experimentation, teamwork and network integration.

summary This paper outlines a working methodology for the parametric development of lattice shell structures combining surface topology and form-finding with the material constraints of straight lath members woven into a geodesic network. By employing non-uniform grid spacing, a wider typology of spatial types can be employed than can be achieved with traditional flat-matt lattice shell construction. As a parametric design tool and working methodology, some of the heavy lifting in form-finding and geodesic analysis can be off-loaded to the tool, such that a more comprehensive attention can be placed on other design criteria such as spatial development and environmental response while maintaining the elegance and economy of lattice shells.

summary The boundaries of augmented reality in the academic field are now being explored at an ever increasing level. In this paper we present the initial findings of an educational project focusing on the use of augmented reality in the design process of an architectural student. The study seeks to evaluate the use of AR as a tool in the design stages, allowing effective exploration of spatial qualities of design projects undertaken in the studio. The learning process is guided by the exploration and detection of a design idea in both form and function, with the virtual environment providing a dynamic environment (Mantovani, 2001). This is further reflected in the constructivist theory where the learning processes use conceptual models, which are used to create incremental stages that become the platform to attain the next [Winn, 1993]. The additional benefit of augmented reality within the learning journey is the ability of the students to visually explore the architectural forms they are creating in greater depth.

summary For the built environment's transformation we are confronted with complex dynamics connected to economic, ecologic and demographic change (Czerkauer-Yamu et al., 2013; Yamu, 2014). In general, cities are complex systems being a "heterogeneous mosaic" of a variety of cultures and functions, characterised by diverging perceptions and interests (ibid). The juxtaposed perceptions and interests in relation to ongoing spatial processes of change create a particularly complex situation. Thus, for planning processes we are in need of approaches that are able to cope not only with the urban complexity but also allow for participatory processes to empower citizens. This paper presents the approach of using Digital Twins in virtual reality (VR) for civic engagement in urban planning, enriched with quantitative and qualitative empirical data as one promising approach to tackle not only the complexity of cities but also involve citizens in the planning process.

summary In this paper we explore what EEG techniques teach us about people's responses to environments. We explain two complementary projects: a sound art installation in which a performer was rigged up with an EEG device and required to sit for 30 minutes in a chair. Around him were positioned custom-made instruments for generating electro-mechanical sounds. A screen behind the performer showed a dynamic geometrical image that altered according to his mood state and as picked up by EEG (engagement, meditation, frustration and excitement), while a sound technologist operated the instruments. We used the same sound sources for an experiment in which we tested people's responses to sounds. We discuss the spatial implications of this work.

summary This research develops a method for the analysis, integration and visualisation of climatic parameters in a dense urban block. In order to test this method, a typical urban block in Manila, Philippines, is investigated and results are represented through computational simulation. The translation of latent spatial qualities into visual data with common tools and techniques allows designers to gain an understanding of how to design local microclimates, and inhabitants to gain greater knowledge of the environment. In this regard, this research proposes, contrary to conventional methodologies, the use of analytical tools as the impetus to, rather than the outcome of, architectural design.

summary This research investigated the impact of synchronous distributed non immersive cloud-VR (cloud computing type of Virtual Reality) meetings using the annotation function by noting an architectural design process. The experimentation of collaborative design work at the early stage of a housing renovation project was executed by three designers. The synchronously distributed meetings using cloud-VR and a freehand sketching function were completed in two days. The annotation function was used effectively when a designer wished to show the space composition and volume shape of the planned building and so on. The proposed design environment, sharing a 3D virtual space with viewpoints, plans, sketches and other information synchronously and remotely, was feasible and effective.

summary Mesh-Mould is a novel robotic fabrication system for complex, non-standard concrete structures. The system folds together formwork and reinforcement, the two most labour intensive aspects of concrete constructions and offers an alternative approach to the current modes of prefabrication by suggesting an in-situ fabrication process (Figure 1). The paper outlines the development of the Form-work/Reinforcing Meshes through several iterations of physical and digital tests. Initially starting from simple triangulated 3D lattices, the structures evolved to become more complex and differentiated. summary A procedure for generating 3-dimensional spatial configurations for optimization applications, termed Dimension Constrained Rectangular Voronoi Diagram (DC-RVD), is presented in this paper. The procedure is able to generate a non-overlapping configuration of spatial units in 3-dimensional space, given a string of real values. It constitutes an extension and adaptation of the Rectangular Voronoi Diagram generating procedure, found in the work of Choi and Young (1991). An extensive description of the procedure, with the relevant pseudocode is included in the paper. The procedure is tested in a stochastic optimisation-based decision support environment. Testing is done using a case study of a medium-sized family house. The result indicate promising performance.

summary This paper documents and critically reflects upon the design, development, fabrication, and implementation of three pavilion projects developed during 2013-14. The core investigation of this work is the production of architectural spaces characterized by a quality of enveloping, diffuse, visual and spatial atmospheres. The principal activity of the research is aimed at refining methods for software-based exploration of formal complexities and the subsequent need to control variability and efficiency in fabrication output, using Grasshopper for Rhino to develop customized definitions particular to each specific project scenario. Linking the projects together are issues of scale, resolution of effect, and intent to move from disparate assemblies of structure and skin toward composite, manifold construction techniques that address multiple concerns (gravity, bracing, affect, etc) with a minimum of assembly. A material palette common to the current vernacular of CNC-based projects such as plywood, plastics, and other sheet materials is utilised. This work is invested in extending the possibilities of the architect and architecture as a discipline, extrapolating the workflow from these successive projects to the speculative impact of the work upon emerging possibilities of architectural construction and craft.

summary This article describes an initiative to identify which cognitive abilities influence performance in 3D modeling for architecture activities. This work tests the visual, spatial and logical reasoning skills of students of architecture. After these tests, the results will compared with the results of 3D modeling test. By identifying, some cognitive abilities that has a direct relation to performance in 3D modeling will be possible to create learning objects that improve these characteristics.
