summary This article has a purpose to introduce a methodology to learn the product design principles, applied with the children of a neighborhood in the City of Guarulhos, State of São Paulo. This project is developed through a workshop organized with the collaboration of the Unified Educational Center, two companies and a digital inclusion program of the Municipality of Guarulhos. In order to provide an understanding on the development stages of a product from its design through its completion, the workshop allowed the participants to learn together and provided the access to a simplified design procedure.

summary The rapid development of digital technology has made architecture a succession of different evolutionary design methodologies. As a result, the rise of computationally driven processes has gain popularity in research and shows a great potential to dramatically improve the design process and productivity that evoke innovations in design practices wherein computer-based project plays a vital role. However, as these technologies rapidly develops and increasingly used in practice, there is a realization that substantial organizational and technological barriers exist that inhibit the effective adoption of these technologies in architectural practices wherein complex projects are being handled. Undeniably it happens in small architectural practices whereby resources are very limited. Relevant literature of the subject shows that research in innovations in manufacturing, product design, technology, construction and engineering practices is substantially conducted but research in digital innovation in design practices is very limited. This paper investigates the factors that impede the effective adoption of emerging digital technologies for the efficient delivery of design projects that are computationally and digitally driven. This involves evaluating digital technologies, technical, financial and organizational barriers when digital innovation is implemented. In order to gain insights of these issues, a pilot study was conducted from several small architectural organizations, and found out relevant attributes and pattern of variables that can be used in establishing a framework for digital innovation. summary The paper discusses a case study for a seating element that takes into account human factors as well as aspects of structural performance, material properties and production parameters within an integrative design approach. Generico is a prototype for a new way of design thinking, developed with a holistic approach. The design is based on the requirements of comfortable sitting and responds to load forces and ergonomic conditions. The Generico chair – resulting from an all-embracing line of thought, from design to production, is an ideal field of application for 3D-printing-technology as it allows for an optimal material distribution.

summary According to Hod Lipson at Cornell University’s Creative Machines Lab, cloud manufacturing ‘consists of a network of smallscale, decentralized nodes of production.’ It is a novel production approach relative to centralized mass production and standardisation methods common to today’s industrial processes. To date, cloud manufacturing techniques have focused largely on the production of smallscale consumer goods that integrate digital fabrication techniques, the most popular being 3D-printing technology. With advances in network-based design platforms for 3D-printing services in combination with the global installation of fabrication laboratories (fab lab), the production of architectural building components using cloud manufacturing techniques is now possible. This paper will define how cloud manufacturing techniques can be expanded into the realm of architectural practice and, in particular, how such techniques can be applied to larger-scale building and construction components. The paper will further discuss how such novel additive manufacturing (AM) processes applied to construction can potentially revolutionize architectural design by generating a new collaborative design model that facilitates local production of customized and readily assembled building components on demand.

summary The need for increased automation of the AEC sector has been extensively documented within the architectural discipline over recent years. Far beyond economic perspectives, current advances in technology offer an increased and more direct implementation of sustainable materials. Within this research, the potential for the re-use of material with low embodied energy within automated construction will be examined. Herefore, Remote Material Deposition (RDM, firstly described in Dörfler et al., 2014) is utilized as main fabrication method, deploying varying compositions of local building debris, lime mortar, and sand, via a throwing arm. This research explores a method of continuous verification of material deployment and removal of material oversaturation to guarantee accuracy. Herefore, all instances of the robot ecology are in direct communication with one another and the user for verification, adaptation, and information. The proposed framework is examined through experimentation by designing, building, and implementing an inter-communicative network of bespoke semi-autonomous robots with all proposed parts of the system.

summary When thinking about the future vision of a city, having in mind recent development in digital technologies and digital design tools we are inclined to expect new building structures which incorporate this technology to better help us manage the complexity of life, and to simplify our daily lives and tasks. The idea behind this research paper lies in design of such structures, which could be put inside an urban context and engage in creating a built environment that can add more to the quality of life. For us Interactive architecture is architecture that is responsive, flexible, changing, always moving and adapting to the needs of today. The world is becoming more dynamic, society is constantly changing and the new needs it develops need to be accommodated. As a result architecture has to follow. Spaces have to become more adaptive, responsive and nature concerned, while having the ability for metamorphosis, flexibility and interactivity. Taken as a starting point of this idea is a specific module from graduation project in 2014 "The Unexpected city", where it was possible to test out first ideas about interactive and flexible objects in an urban environment.

summary In architecture schools, where the ‘studio culture’ lies at the heart of students’ learning, taught courses, particularly technology ones, are often seen as secondary or supplementary units. Successful delivery of such courses, where students can act effectively, be motivated and engaged, is a rather demanding task requiring careful planning and the use of various teaching styles. A recent challenge that faces architecture education today, and subsequently influences the way technology courses are being designed, is the growing trend in practice towards environmentally responsive design and the need for graduates with new skills in sustainable construction and urban ecology (HEFCE’s consultation document, 2005). This article presents the role of innovative simulation modelling tools in the enhancement of the student learning experience and professional development. Reference is made to a teaching practice that has recently been applied at Portsmouth School of Architecture in the United Kingdom and piloted at Deakin University in Australia. The work focuses on the structure and delivery of one of the two main technology units in the second year architecture programme that underwent two main phases of revision during the academic years 2009/10 and 2010/11. The article examines the inclusion of advanced daylight simulation modelling tools in the unit programme, and measures the effectiveness of enhancing its delivery as a key component of the curriculum on the student learning experience. A main objective of the work was to explain whether or not the introduction of a simulation modelling component, and the later improvement of its integration with the course programme and assessment, has contributed to a better learning experience and level of engagement. Student feedback and the grade distribution pattern over the last three academic years were collected and analyzed. The analysis of student feedback on the revised modelling component showed a positive influence on the learning experience and level of satisfaction and engagement. An improvement in student performance was also recorded over the last two academic years and following the implementation of new assessment design.

Based on national and international reports, experiences have shown that it is not only the insertion of a technology applied to project development and construction, but it also covers significant changes involving people and processes that require collaborative, interdisciplinary and integrated practices. In this context, a study for the implementation of BIM, considering the particularities of the Architecture and Urbanism course at Unochapecó University was developed, once the curriculum is written based on these discussions. summary The city of Vienna follows a long-term initiative to become a Smart City. Within 2050 it aims to reduce 80% of the CO2 emissions (in comparison to 1990) and looks forward to generate ways for a sustainable energy production. (Smart City Framework Strategy 2014) Reaching this targets requires a complex planning process which involves interdisciplinary stakeholders and decision makers. An interactive multi-dimensional environment, comprising spatial objects and data models, is a helpful tool during these planning processes. This paper proposes a suitable path for the development of a structural framework for such an environment. The benefits of such an environment are shown in detail, based on an application of the economic solar heat potential in Vienna.

summary In this paper an online editing system for eCAADe papers is presented, which is also the technology behind this proceedings volume. On the occasion of the eCAADe 1999 conference in Liverpool, a novel layout for the proceedings was developed. In the course of forthcoming annual conferences, this became the distinctive “look and feel” of the eCAADe proceedings. Due to the complexity, professional typesetting was required for and the authors were disconnected from the publication and layout stage. This paper elaborates on the development and implementation of a web-based tool, which takes care of the typesetting and delegates this activity again to the authors. Neither software installation is required, nor specific training must be completed in advance. On top of this the degree of homogeneity can be raised significantly, thus supporting the editors in charge to concentrate on the task of harmonising the resulting publication output.

summary Rethinking Comprehensive Design—the 19th International Conference on Computer-Aided Architectural Design Research in Asia (CAADRIA 2014)—emphasises a cross-disciplinary context to challenge the mainstream culture of computational design in architecture. It aims to (re)explore the potential of computational design methods and technologies in architecture from a holistic perspective. The conference provides an international forum where academics and practitioners share their novel research development and reflection for defining the future of computation in architectural design. Hosted by the Department of Design, Engineering and Management at the Kyoto Institute of Technology, CAADRIA 2014 presents 88 peer-reviewed full papers from all over the world. These high-quality research papers are complimented by 34 short work-in-progress papers submitted for the poster session of the conference. The conference proceedings were produced by a motivated team of volunteers from the CAADRIA community through an extensive collaboration. The 88 full papers rigorously double-blind reviewed by the dedicated International Review Committee (consisting of 74 experts), testify to CAADRIA’s highly respectable international standing. Call for abstracts sent out in July 2013 attracted 298 submissions. They were initially reviewed by the Paper Selection Committee who accepted 198 abstracts for further development. Of these, 118 full papers were eventually submitted in the final stage. Each submitted paper was then assessed by at least two members of the International Review Committee. Following the reviewers’ recommendations, 91 papers were accepted by the conference, of which 88 are included in this volume and for presentation in CAADRIA 2014. Collectively, these 88 papers define Rethinking Comprehensive Design in terms of the following research streams: Shape Studies; User Participation in Design; Human-Computer Interaction; Digital Fabrication and Construction; Computational Design Analysis; New Digital Design Concepts and Strategies; Practice-Based and Interdisciplinary Computational Design Research; Collaborative and Collective Design; Generative, Parametric and Evolutionary Design; Design Cognition and Creativity; Virtual / Augmented Reality and Interactive Environments; Computational Design Research and Education; and Theory, Philosophy and Methodology of Computational Design Research. summary Parallel to the early development and recent widespread usage of composite materials in building and manufacturing, the concept of functionally graded materials (FGM) was initiated and developed as far back as the 1980s. In contrast to the composite paradigm, where layers of materials are glued and 'cooked' together under high pressure and temperature to form laminated parts, FGM are singular materials that vary their consistency gradually over their volume. In direct link to their increasing use in fields adjacent to architecture, the scope of the paper is to explore a possible design route for designing with FGM. Of a limited number of available CAD software where material properties can be graded, the intent of the design for a materially graded windbreak module is to utilize particle systems as a technique for simulating fields of interacting, information-loaded material point sets that can be fused together in a gradient manner.

summary The recent convergence of computational design and digital fabrication has made new forms of architectural materialization possible. A workshop conducted at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology investigated how differentiated lightweight metal structures may be designed and fabricated under these new conditions. The workshop aim was to complete three such structures; each one is aggregated from aluminum profiles that are robotically assembled according to computationally driven geometric logics. The key challenge was to enable participants, assumed to lack programming and robotic fabrication experience, to design and construct their structures within imposed time constraints. This paper describes the subsequent development of accessible computational design tools and a robust robotic fabrication method for the workshop, and highlights the key decisions taken with their implementation. The workshop results are discussed and the design tools evaluated with respect to them. The paper concludes by recommending an approach to developing computational design tools which emphasizes the importance of usability and integration with the fabrication process.

summary Human imagination has played with the idea of an alternative technological world for years. From dystopian proposals like Neuromancer or The Matrix to more positive views like the recent Upload series, the exploration of the friction between the digital world and the physical world has entertained the imagination of our society for decades. Outside the fictional environments, the omnipresence of the internet and the development of “the cloud” are showing that the virtual world is possible and that the idea of a Metaverse is no longer part of science fiction but a very real future for human relations (Winters 2021). In line with the idea of the Metaverse, the intersection of the virtual and the physical world is being explored through the idea of Extended Realities. Technology is allowing humans to enhance their capabilities more than ever, and in fact, it has been proposed that we are entering the Augmented era (King 2014). This paper explores the opportunities and possible challenges that “Extended Architecture” has by analyzing a research project based on augmented reality as the media to explore these ideas. summary Since Building Information Modelling as a technology depends on recognizing parts of the buildings as objects that can be simulated digitally, to prepare students to grasp the BIM way of thinking, educators can start introducing the concept early in the architectural curriculum without using the real tools. The researchers monitored the students' progress over a period of time while they were using different 3 dimensional CAD tools in several situations such as design studio visualization and construction document production until eventually the same group of students have been introduced formally to a real BIM tool. The research tries to establish a relationship between the pedagogical techniques and the success of the students to grasp what BIM is about and the development of their ability to use it fruitfully. Comparisons between their performances should shed the light on the best method to use in order to prepare students for the use of BIM.

summary Technological innovation has been an important driving force in architecture, enabling and inspiring architects and engineers by giving them new tools for solving existing problems. In the last two decades, the exploration of digital design and fabrication technologies has stimulated the development of a variety of interests and strategies to materialize increasingly complex and customized solutions in architecture, with traditional building materials. Reinforced concrete is the most widely used material in the building industry today and throughout its history has been the subject of vast research into its performance as a construction material and its tectonic potential in architecture. As such, the introduction of digital fabrication processes in concrete construction represents the biggest prospect for renovation of our built environment and at the same time, presents particular difficulties and opportunities, which are now being addressed. In an effort to investigate the alternative design and material possibilities in concrete emerging from the use of digital fabrication technologies in architecture, this paper proposes a focused view of digital fabrication applied to concrete construction with two areas of research. By framing the research in the context of reference works in concrete architecture of the 20th century, this paper describes and illustrates taxonomy of existing and possible types of integration of digital fabrication technologies in concrete architecture in the realms of Practice and Research.This characterization allows the authors to frame the relation between material, technology and architecture in different environments regarding the same material, extracting a clear image of existing processes, their potential and shortcomings, as well as expectations for future developments.
