summary Architecture took an evolutionary context over time, where designers were interested in finding pragmatic spontaneous appropriate solutions and met the needs of people in urban and architectural spaces. Whereas, in modern architecture an intense and varied competition happens between architects through various currents of thoughts , schools and movements, however, that creativity was the ultimate goal , and a the same time we find that every architect distinguishes himself individually or collectively through tools of architectural expression and design representation adopting a school of thought, using , for example, the leaves of various sizes and diverse technical drawing tools to accurately show that he can be read by professionals or craftsmen outside the geographical scope to which it belongs .With the rapid technological development which accompanied the digital craft in the contemporary world , The digital craft summed up time, distance and tools , so they gave the concept more appropriate accuracy , as virtualization has become the most effective tool for Architecture To reach the ideal and typical results at the practical level, or pure research. At the level of residential design and on the grounds that housing plays an important role in the government policies and given that housing is a basic unit common to all urban communities on earth , the use of different programs to show its typicality in two dimensions or in the third dimension - for example, using software "AutoCAD " " 3D Max " , " ArchiCAD " ... etc. - gave virtualisation smart, creative and beautiful forms which lead to better understand the used /or to be used residential spaces, and thus the conclusion that the life system of dwelling under design or under study , as can specifically recognize spatial structure in housing design - using digital software applying "Space Syntax" for example - in the shadow of slowly growing digital and creative development with the help of high-speed computers . the morphological structure of the dwelling is considered to be the most important contemporary residential designs Investigation through which the researcher in this area aims to understand the various behavioral relations and social structures within the projected residential area, using Space Syntax techniques. Through the structural morphology of dwellings can be inferred quality networks, levels of connectivity and depth and places of openness or closure within the dwelling under study, or under design. How, then, have intelligently contributed this digital craft to the perception of those spatial fixtures ? The aim of this research is to apply an appropriate program in the field of vernacular residential design and notably Space syntax which relate to the understanding and analysis of spatial structures, and also demonstrate its role at the morphological and spatial structure aspects, and prove how effective it helps to understand the social logic of domestic space through social individual/collective relationships and behaviors projected on the spatial configurations of dwellings. The answer to the issue raised above and at the methodological aspect, the study discussed the application of space syntax techniques on the subject. The findings tend to prove the efficiency by comparing samples of Berber vernacular domestic spaces from the Mzab, the Aures and Kabilya in Algeria, and has also led to ascertain the intelligibility of space syntax techniques in reading the differences between the behaviors in domestic spaces in different areas of the sample through long periods of time .

summary The research in this paper focusses on how a narrative text can be the generator of an architectural drawing, or other architectural representation, such as an Architectural Virtual Environment. The drawn physical sketch has traditionally played that role. A particular approach to narrative has been important for some notable architects and their architecture. Ian Ritchie (2014), for instance, celebrates the use of poetry to describe the essential spirit of a scheme before any drawing is done. The work in the paper here describes the proposition to capture such narrative text in a systematic and structured way. We describe foundational work on how the captured narrative text has been translated into a contemporary, computer-mediated, design development environment. Different narrative accounts recalling a now demolished house form the focus case study. This case study is the vehicle through which the initial principles establishing how best to move from narrative to virtual representation are established and tested.

summary The way we design our buildings and cities has not really changed a lot for decades. Drawing boards have been exchanged with relatively small 30” inch monitors, pens and rulers have been exchanged with advanced digital tools mostly though disturbing, making the creative process of design merely a frustrating one. So what have we gained from CAD. Certainly a lot, but mostly the possibility to combine and fuse projects. Simulating future use and behaviour, revealing design issues and failures before actually built. Still data fusion is a relatively new challenge albeit quite obvious trying to assemble models coming from different systems and vendors representing different professional domains. This paper discusses data exchange and data fusion in general and presents a new development, which gives the possibility to enhance data as intelligent objects opening a whole new paradigm for both data exchange and data fusion.

summary The majority of CAD tools are designed for precision modelling of forms. The very earliest stages of design tend to be worked through with traditional media such as sketching with pen or pencil. A reason why this is, stems from the difficulty of drawing or diagramming uncertainty or vague ideas in a traditional CAD application. When a designer is still working through the design, pen and pencil are a means of exploring. While any simple pencil sketch can be imitated using CAD, this is too time consuming and limiting when compared with traditional media. This paper presents research in a prototype for a early stage planning software application using blobs (closed recursively subdivided curves) and ideas from artificial life. While not a replacement for sketching, the aim of this research is to provide a means of diagramming preliminary ideas as exploring the idea of a dialogue between humans and computers. The shapes represented in the software use physics simulations and act as 'soft-bodies' allowing users to manipulate them in various ways. Ideas from artificial life simulations are used to have the shapes interact with each other and produce unexpected configurations. The aim of these interactions is to trigger a response from the user and to allow them to explore configurations that they did not anticipate.

summary Traditionally media facades have been created using 2D surfaces, not dissimilar to televisions. As computational architecture continues to explore non-Euclidian shapes it is a logical process to investigate the use and possibilities of emerging complex curved surfaces for the display of media content to match architectural design aspirations with demands of ubiquitous city concepts of penetrating surfaces with information. Drawing on existing architectural knowledge of ruled surfaces the paper outlines the implementation of adopting existing principles from architecture and mathematics to contemporary discussions in media architecture. It demonstrates that ruled surfaces can function as media facades by simulating ten different ruled surface types in Grasshopper and overlaying them with different video content. Based on the results the team proceeded to build a 1:1 prototype of a hyperbolic paraboloid to test if the simulated results in the computer matched with the physical model. The prototype was further tested using media content to observe the visibility of the display from various viewing positions. Based on the findings the paper concludes that ruled surface media facades are feasible. This investigation, its proposed hypothesis, methodology, implications, significance and evaluation are presented in the paper.

The increasingly efficient and more specialized digital applications allow the designers a whole range of facilities providing drawing commands and changes very easy to use, which puts 3D physical model in a less priority or being useless. This paper studies how to minimize This gap by teaching students that 3D physical models are not only the outer physical result of the design but it could be also the way to learn the architectural relationships and values in architectural design, where 3D physical models techniques now had been updated and related in a way to the digital 3D models and CAD applications.

summary This article aims to describe the ephemeral qualities that typography acquires in the digital context, caused by the polyvalence of the algorithmic code, which, from generative programming, allows the user to interact with the typographic object. These reflection are realized through the study of four projects: “Lettree” (2004), “Pyrographie” (2005), “Falling in Love” (2016) and “He liked Thick Word Soup” (2014). The observations were made by drawing a comparison between the concept of “matter” in the computational scenario proposed by the design philosopher Vilém Flusser (2015) and the quality of “fluidity” observed in the images created by digital generative programs.

summary This paper explores an analog method of intaglio etching via digital /computational means. It qualifies an alternative approach to digital representation through the development of a narrative based architectural expression. The project, entitled Weerkas, was undertaken as an open call for the International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam 2014. The drawings used a combination of 3D computational modelling and AutoCAD drawing to explore emerging drawing technique derived from historical drawing methods. These digital drawings were photo-transferred and etched using a polymer intaglio plate to produce the final set of drawings. While analog / digital connections have been increasingly explored in architecture, it is rarely used to re-create past modes of production. While this paper counters a nostalgic approach to representation, it is anecdotal evidence of a pluralistic method in combining three-dimensional and two-dimensional drawing technique as an emerging form of architectural expression.

summary This paper discusses the potential of the application of principles of fractal geometry in small scale design, using the design of parametric furniture as an example. It begins by summarizing the fundamental mathematical principles of fractals and the, relatively limited, application they have had so far in design. A theoretical stance is taken, viewing fractals as form-generators with significant potential. From this, the main principles of a computational design methodology are established, drawing on parallels from other design periods. As proof-of-concept, the paper presents the application of the methodology in a specific brief for the design of a piece of furniture, accompanied with images that document and illustrates the process. A parallel is established between the 21st century methodology of digital craftsmanship presented here, and the 19th century Arts & Crafts movement. Finally, the paper presents directions for further research which would allow the utilization of fractals in different design scales.

summary The introduction of BIM is assumed to introduce higher degrees of collaboration and efficiencies within design and construction practices. The potentials of this collaboration tend to focus on architecture, engineering and construction (AEC). Landscape architecture is rarely discussed within this model, technically nor conceptual. This paper explores the potentials of landscape architecture’s contribution to this new model of digitally driven collaboration. Drawing on interviews with the architects, landscape architects and engineers we explore the role of landscape architecture in the conceptualization, design and construction of the Victorian Desalination Plant, a highly political project located on an ecological sensitive coastal site. This paper highlights the centrality of the landscape digital model in mediating the critical intersection between the design parameters, physical attributes of the site, performative qualities of the design and the disciplines of architecture, landscape and engineering. This model also formed the dominant method for communicating the complex project to stake holders and clients. Significantly, this model was not developed into a BIM model, with content instead integrated into the architectural and engineering models. This research highlights one of the major difficulties in conceptualizing the positioning of landscape architecture within a BIM driven collaborative process. To operate effectively, landscape architecture must engage across the multiple scales and disciplinary intersections. Consequently, landscape architects must understand the digital and spatial languages of architecture and engineering, and conceptualise where their contribution lies within ‘paperless’ design and construction processes. This outcome differs significantly from current debates within landscape architecture which instead focus on the identification of ‘the’ specialist BIM software most appropriate to the discipline, as distinct from understanding BIM as a collaborative process.

summary This design research reimagines the architectural detail in a postdigital framework and proposes digital methods to work upon discrete tectonics. Drawing upon Marco Frascari's writing The Tell-the-Tale Detail, the study aims to reimagine tectonic thinking for focused attention after the digital turn. Today, computational tools are powerful enough to perform operations more similar to physical tools than in the earlier digital era. These tools create a "digital materiality," where architects can manipulate digital information in parallel and overlapping ways to physical corollaries. (Abrons and Fure, 2018) To date, work in this area has focused on materiality specifically. This project reinterprets tectonics using texture map editing and point cloud information, particularly reconceptualizing jointing using images. Smartphone-based 3D digital scanning was used to captured details from a series of Carlo Scarpa's influential works, isolating these details from their physical sites and focusing attention upon individual tectonic moments. As digital scans, these details problematize the rhetoric of smoothness and seamlessness prevalent in digital architecture as they are discretely construed loci yet composed of digital meshes. (Jones 2014) Once removed from their contexts, reconnecting the digital scans into compositions of "compound details" necessitated a series of new mechanisms for constructing and construing not native to the material world. Using Photoshop editing of texture-mapped images, digital texturing of meshes, and interpretation of the initial material constructions, new joints within and between these the digital scanned details were created to reframe the original detail for the post-digital.

summary Sketching by hand is without doubt – alongside building models – the most common tool that architects employ when designing. A disadvantage of the sketch is, even if it is a perspective drawing, that it is a purely two-dimensional planar representation of a three-dimensional product: the three-dimensional impression that the sketch communicates is a product of the viewer’s imagination. Digital modelling tools on the other hand support the creation of three-dimensional content but fall short in their ease of handling: their complexity and potentially unintuitive operation hinder rather than support the design process. Taking this discrepancy as a starting point, the presented system details the development and prototypical implementation of a dynamic 3D-sketching tool. The underlying core idea is to create a seamless connection between a perspective hand-sketch and the corresponding digital 3D-model in order to benefit from the advantages of hand sketching as a design tool and computer maintained 3D models. The system allows the designer to work as usual, visualizing his or her thoughts using perspective sketches. The user sketches on a touchscreen surface. The 2D drawing is automatically interpreted and converted into a system of 3D lines, surfaces and volumes in real-time.

title Embodied Design Cognition: Action-Based Formalizations in Architectural Design

summary This paper frames design knowledge as formalizable physical actions that can more fully exploit future design tools and production methods.As computational design tools become more physically interactive and integrated into our environment we need new research frameworks to develop theories of physical design action as a form of knowledge. Symbolic theories of design knowledge traditionally frame design activity as a mental process and as a result researchers have not fully explored the potential for bodily-based computational design knowledge.We present an action- based design notation drawing inspiration from music performance theory to illustrate how this may impact design research.We discuss findings from situated cognition in cognitive science as an alternative framework for exploring and expanding design knowledge.We conclude with suggestions for future work in robotic-aided design cognition.

summary This paper explores an alternative approach to architectural representation by using computation and digital modeling to develop novel modes of drawing. The project was initiated for the International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam (IABR 2014) and was exhibited in the seminal Kunsthal Rotterdam in the summer of 2014. The project, entitled Weerkas, was a set of twelve intaglio etchings. A combination of digital modeling programs such as Rhino, Grasshopper and 3D Studio Max and drafting software AutoCAD were used to develop the drawings. The digital files were photo-transferred and etched using a polymer intaglio plate. The analog/digital hybrid explores the limitations of such a combined means of expression and its possible significance in developing a two from three-dimensional drawing technique.

summary By elaborating on the significance of the drawing in the architectural avantgarde of the 1960s, the paper’s primary scope is to weave a thread between late modernism and contemporary research in computational design. The architectural drawing is presented as an abstract means aiding design research. The more recent notion of performative drawing evokes adaptability, being a critical precondition that responds to diverse design aims in interactive manners. Performative drawing's function may further be linked to patterns, a recurring research theme during late modernism. Thinking in (and with) patterns recalls approaching design problems through malleable schemas that hold design data, according to which they are being transformed. In respect, the present paper delves into the analogies between the manipulation of patterns with the use of drawings during late modernism and parametric processes developed through simulation patterns of the current era. Through this comparison, it becomes possible to stress out the operative significance of methodologies and conceptual means in the architectural making as tools that are being used primarily for the exploration of form’s dynamic behaviour.
