summary The evaluation of a low-tech wind sensing platform for urban aerodynamic simulations relevant to pedestrian comfort. In this paper, the wind canyon effect is simulated with two different building morphologies. The platform provides conceptual knowledge of the dynamics in wind relevant for designers, architectural practitioners and students of design. Low-cost hot wire anemometry is utilised for the design of an Experimental Fluid Dynamic (EFD) wind sensing network interface. This paper explores the validity of the sensing platform for a new approach for non-wind engineers to gain a better understanding of the dynamics of wind. The influence of real-time feedback from quantified wind on the understanding of wind phenomena for non-wind engineers is discussed and compared with post analysis data. It was found that real-time quantified feedback from wind intrigues and stimulates the intuitive notion of wind dynamics through discussion, however post analysis remains critical to evaluate building design performance.

summary This paper presents an experimental study on strategies of utilizing wind as an architectural element, proposing the reconfiguration and projection of wind patterns to produce vaults of wind as regions of shelter in the outdoor environment. It shows an aerodynamic analysis and exploration of barriers, deflectors and porous screens in an existing urban wind canyon for a hypothetical urban shelter in a tram stop area. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software and physical tests in a wind tunnel using microelectronic hot-wire anemometry are the methods utilised. The experiments involve a comparison between screens with impermeable surfaces and porous membranes and their ability to project wind as architecture. The experiments showed that the use of porous membranes improves the mitigation level of wind speed and turbulence intensity in the wind vaults regions.

summary Creativity with its various processes is involved in all design actions. Creativity used in architectural design is different than creativity in other domains. However, creativity in general with its related cognition processes has no general theory. This research proposes certain activities of initial architectural design phases in which the role of activity is important. The research proceeds to present a case study of two architectural design studios in which a VR environment is employed in order to investigate the effect of VR use on the creativity in those initial design phases. The research applies a methodology of qualitative and quantitative analysis. Various architectural design factors are neutralized to overcome the influence generated from human factors variation and design thinking prejudice on architectural designing and the associated creativities.

summary Governments in Australia are faced with policy implementation that mandates higher energy efficient housing (Foran, Lenzen & Dey 2005). To this effect, the National Construction Code (NCC) 2013 stipulates the minimum energy performance for residential buildings as 114MJ/m2 per annum or 6 stars on an energy rating scale. Compliance with this minimum is mandatory but there are several methods through which residential buildings can be rated to comply with the deemed to satisfy provisions outlined in the NCC. FirstRate5 is by far the most commonly used simulation software used in Victoria, Australia. Meanwhile, Building Information Modelling (BIM), using software such as ArchiCAD has gained a foothold in the industry. The energy simulation software within ArchiCAD, EcoDesigner, enables the reporting on the energy performance based on BIM elements that contain thermal information. This research is founded on a comparative study between FirstRate5 and EcoDesigner. Three building types were analysed and compared. The comparison finds significant differences between simulations, being, measured areas, thermal loads and potentially serious shortcomings within FirstRate5, that are discussed along with the future potential of a fully BIM-integrated model for energy rating certification in Victoria.

summary This paper documents and critically reflects upon the design, development, fabrication, and implementation of three pavilion projects developed during 2013-14. The core investigation of this work is the production of architectural spaces characterized by a quality of enveloping, diffuse, visual and spatial atmospheres. The principal activity of the research is aimed at refining methods for software-based exploration of formal complexities and the subsequent need to control variability and efficiency in fabrication output, using Grasshopper for Rhino to develop customized definitions particular to each specific project scenario. Linking the projects together are issues of scale, resolution of effect, and intent to move from disparate assemblies of structure and skin toward composite, manifold construction techniques that address multiple concerns (gravity, bracing, affect, etc) with a minimum of assembly. A material palette common to the current vernacular of CNC-based projects such as plywood, plastics, and other sheet materials is utilised. This work is invested in extending the possibilities of the architect and architecture as a discipline, extrapolating the workflow from these successive projects to the speculative impact of the work upon emerging possibilities of architectural construction and craft.

summary Air pollution in urban environments can have negative consequences on people's health and comfort of city-dwellers, and on the durability of buildings. Understanding the transfer and deposition of pollutants in the urban environment is therefore essential in the design process of a building. Computational simulations can aid in understanding the pollutant/chemical dispersion in the urban cityscapes. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) represents the study of fluid mechanics with the use of computer models and simulations. In this paper we study the impact of urban planning on pollution dispersion, the dispersion characteristics, such as the spread of the pollution dispersions, have been determined for different wind speeds and wind directions.

summary This paper focuses on the objective study of emotions, namely, fear induced by architectural spaces, by sensing and statistically analysing some physiological signals of users experiencing Virtual Environments (VE). For this, a virtual building was designed considering the presence of stairs and ramps as architectural elements that could affect users´ physiological states and perception of fear of falling. Thirty-one older persons participated in this study and were assigned to two experimental conditions (i.e., safe and unsafe conditions). Five main locations (beginning of the stairs; neutral room; first descending ramp; ascending ramp; and the middle of ascending ramp) were considered along the participants' path, and heart rate (HR) was collected in the vicinity of those locations. Results shown significant differences in HR activation among neutral, beginning of stairs and middle of ascending ramp. Despite the fact that the effect of condition was not fully verified for HR, participants reported more fear while interacting with the unsafe condition, with significant differences between conditions.

summary Luminance contrast has been identified as an effective depth cue through perceptual studies using digital images generated by the integrated technologies of physically based lighting simulation and perceptually based tone mapping. However, the prior established framework utilizes a single camera viewpoint, failing to address the binocular vision of the human visual system. In this study, the computational framework is extended to incorporate 3-dimensional (3D) stereo display technology. Psychophysical experiments were conducted to investigate the depth effect of luminance contrast on the experimental scenes presented on conventional and stereo displays. The objective of this study was twofold: first, to investigate the effect of luminance contrast on depth perception, considering binocular vision; second, to further advance the visual realism of the computer-generated environment to reflect the perceptual reality of static pictorial and binocular disparity cues.

summary This study sought to characterise students’ design activity while designing with Computer Aided Design (CAAD) professional programs and its impact on the students’ design process. The design protocol participants were final year students (architectural design and architectural technology), who have spent at least four years in a school of architecture and were confident CAAD users. The analysis represents four CAAD-based protocols of final year students at a school of architecture. The analysed protocols varied in more than one aspect. This variation includes: (1) programs, (2) the mode of using programs whether single or multiple, (3) protocol segments (total number, duration and frequencies), and (4) design categories and total time spent in designing. In light of the study results, the participants demonstrated that, for the same design problem, restraining the conceptual design medium would not necessarily bind them to a certain design strategy. However, there are some disciplinary differences between AD and AT final year students, on how CAAD is used during to solve conceptual design.

At the level of residential design and on the grounds that housing plays an important role in the government policies and given that housing is a basic unit common to all urban communities on earth , the use of different programs to show its typicality in two dimensions or in the third dimension - for example, using software "AutoCAD " " 3D Max " , " ArchiCAD " ... etc. - gave virtualisation smart, creative and beautiful forms which lead to better understand the used /or to be used residential spaces, and thus the conclusion that the life system of dwelling under design or under study , as can specifically recognize spatial structure in housing design - using digital software applying "Space Syntax" for example - in the shadow of slowly growing digital and creative development with the help of high-speed computers . the morphological structure of the dwelling is considered to be the most important contemporary residential designs Investigation through which the researcher in this area aims to understand the various behavioral relations and social structures within the projected residential area, using Space Syntax techniques. Through the structural morphology of dwellings can be inferred quality networks, levels of connectivity and depth and places of openness or closure within the dwelling under study, or under design. How, then, have intelligently contributed this digital craft to the perception of those spatial fixtures ? The aim of this research is to apply an appropriate program in the field of vernacular residential design and notably Space syntax which relate to the understanding and analysis of spatial structures, and also demonstrate its role at the morphological and spatial structure aspects, and prove how effective it helps to understand the social logic of domestic space through social individual/collective relationships and behaviors projected on the spatial configurations of dwellings. The answer to the issue raised above and at the methodological aspect, the study discussed the application of space syntax techniques on the subject. The findings tend to prove the efficiency by comparing samples of Berber vernacular domestic spaces from the Mzab, the Aures and Kabilya in Algeria, and has also led to ascertain the intelligibility of space syntax techniques in reading the differences between the behaviors in domestic spaces in different areas of the sample through long periods of time .

summary In this paper a semiautomated morphological classification of urban space is addressed systematically by sorting through the volumetric shapes of public spaces represented as 3-dimensional convex and solid voids. The motivation of this approach comes from a frequent criticism of space syntax methods for lacking information on how buildings and terrain morphology influence the perception and use of public spaces in general and streets in particular. To solve this problem information on how façades relate with streets and especially information about the facades’ height should be considered essential to produce a richer and more accurate morphological analysis of street canyons and other open spaces. Parametric modelling of convex voids broadens the hitherto known concept of two-dimensional convex spaces considering surrounding facades’ height and topography as important inputs for volumetric representation of urban space. The method explores the analytic potentials of ‘convex voids’ and ‘solid voids’ in describing characteristics of open public spaces such as containment, openness, enclosure, and perceived enclosure, and using these metrics to analyse and classify urban open spaces.

title Printing Compound-Curved Sandwich Structures with Robotic Multi-Bias Additive Manufacturing

summary A research team at Florida International University Robotics and Digital Fabrication Lab has developed a novel method for 3d-printing curved open grid core sandwich structures using a thermoplastic extruder mounted on a robotic arm. This print-on-print additive manufacturing (AM) method relies on the 3d modeling software Rhinoceros and its parametric software plugin Grasshopper with Kuka-Parametric Robotic Control (Kuka-PRC) to convert NURBS surfaces into multi-bias additive manufacturing (MBAM) toolpaths. While several high-profile projects including the University of Stuttgart ICD/ITKE Research Pavilions 2014–15 and 2016–17, ETH-Digital Building Technologies project Levis Ergon Chair 2018, and 3D printed chair using Robotic Hybrid Manufacturing at Institute of Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC) 2019, have previously demonstrated the feasibility of 3d printing with either MBAM or sandwich structures, this method for printing Compound-Curved Sandwich Structures with Robotic MBAM combines these methods offering the possibility to significantly reduce the weight of spanning or cantilevered surfaces by incorporating the structural logic of open grid-core sandwiches with MBAM toolpath printing. Often built with fiber reinforced plastics (FRP), sandwich structures are a common solution for thin wall construction of compound curved surfaces that require a high strength-to-weight ratio with applications including aerospace, wind energy, marine, automotive, transportation infrastructure, architecture, furniture, and sports equipment manufacturing. Typical practices for producing sandwich structures are labor intensive, involving a multi-stage process including (1) the design and fabrication of a mould, (2) the application of a surface substrate such as FRP, (3) the manual application of a light-weight grid-core material, and (4) application of a second surface substrate to complete the sandwich. There are several shortcomings to this moulded manufacturing method that affect both the formal outcome and the manufacturing process: moulds are often costly and labor intensive to build, formal geometric freedom is limited by the minimum draft angles required for successful removal from the mould, and customization and refinement of product lines can be limited by the need for moulds. While the most common material for this construction method is FRP, our proof-of-concept experiments relied on low-cost thermoplastic using a specially configured pellet extruder. While the method proved feasible for small representative examples there remain significant challenges to the successful deployment of this manufacturing method at larger scales that can only be addressed with additional research. The digital workflow includes the following steps: (1) Create a 3D digital model of the base surface in Rhino, (2) Generate toolpaths for laminar printing in Grasshopper by converting surfaces into lists of oriented points, (3) Generate the structural grid-core using the same process, (4) Orient the robot to align in the direction of the substructure geometric planes, (5) Print the grid core using MBAM toolpaths, (6) Repeat step 1 and 2 for printing the outer surface with appropriate adjustments to the extruder orientation. During the design and printing process, we encountered several challenges including selecting geometry suitable for testing, extruder orientation, calibration of the hot end and extrusion/movement speeds, and deviation between the computer model and the physical object on the build platen. Physical models varied from their digital counterparts by several millimeters due to material deformation in the extrusion and cooling process. Real-time deviation verification studies will likely improve the workflow in future studies.

summary Generative design tools can accelerate the optioneering process by allowing designers to quickly generate large numbers of design variants, thereby enabling a wider and more thorough exploration to be conducted. This paper focuses on procedures for generating inner city street networks and city block massing studies for sites within existing urban areas. A novel procedure is proposed that is capable of subdividing complex non-orthogonal sites into similarly sized well-formed plots and subsequently further subdividing these plots into sizes appropriate for selected city block typologies. The application of the procedure is demonstrated on a site in Singapore.

summary Regarding interior building topology as an important aspect in building design and management, several approaches to indoor point cloud structuring have been introduced recently. Apart from a high-level semantic segmentation of the formerly unstructured point clouds into stories and rooms, these methods additionally allow the extraction of attributed graphs in which nodes represent rooms (including room properties like area or height), and edges represent connections between rooms (doors or staircases) or indicate neighborhood relationships (separation by walls). In this paper, we investigate possible applications of these approaches in architectural design and building management and comment on the possible benefits for the building profession. While contemporary practice of spatial arrangement is predominantly based on the manual iteration of spatial topologies, we show that the segmentation of buildings in spaces along with the untraditional more abstract graph-based representations can be used for design, management and navigation within building structures.

summary This paper presents the experimental study of aerodynamics phenomena in built environments, focused on explorations of environmental wind flow near buildings, pedestrian wind comfort issues and methods of mitigation of wind speed. In addition, it is an overview of an aerodynamic analysis with CFD software for a hypothetical urban shelter design, based on aerodynamic features. The aim is to evaluate the feature’s performance to control wind flow in protection regions for pedestrians.

summary The Hybrid Territories project explored the construction of urban hybrid spatialities by means of cultural action using digital media with a two-way perspective: of someone who occupies and experiences these spaces, as well as of someone who is called to understand these spaces, for they should there intervene. A form of collective creation through the use of digital interfaces has thereby been established as an effective action of intervention in an urban space, of which new understandings emerge, and establish reflexive territories that may even reshape the practice of the architect and the urban planner.

summary From the experience of the workshop TrapiXe, this article focuses on three aspects of the design of architectural objects with complex geometric shapes, making use of parametric computational programs. The first two relate 1. the establishment of relations between the architectural object and aspects of local culture; and 2 the use of information extracted from the area of intervention itself, transformed into parameters to be inserted in computer programming. The third aspect is the possibility of serial reproduction of non-identical building components, relating parametric design with digital fabrication procedures aiming at the construction of buildings composing a public equipments network at different locations in the same city.

summary This paper presents a proposal for a cellular brise-soleil system appropriate for tropical humid climates. The system controls thermal gains whilst allowing for specific lighting requirements, permitting, in many cases, interior thermal and light comfort conditions without the use of thermal machines or artificial lighting. The development of the system involved a definition of variable design parameters and areas of performance evaluation and optimization, plus construction detailing development represented by a first project to be completed in 2014. Even if the geometrical definitions, optimization processes and production machinery are relatively simple and not particularly new to anyone in the field, it is claimed that the use of such already widely available technologies at this basic level, when solving relevant problems, has still to be used in generalised ways by common designers, and with the example shown, this paper wishes to promote such prospect.
