summary A panel-hinge framework is a structure composed of rigid panels connected by hinges. It was recently proved that for a so-called generic position, the rigidity of panel-hinge frameworks can be tested by examining the combinatorial property of the underlying graph. In this study, we apply such combinatorial characteristics to create design forms. However, such characterization is only valid for so-called "generic" panel-hinge frameworks. When considering the application of design forms, we need to take into account non-generic cases. In this paper, we develop the method to inductively generate non-generic rigid panel-hinge frameworks consisting of orthogonal panels and to inductively generate rigid panel-hinge frameworks based on fractal geometry coupled with space filling 3-dimensional convex polyhedron as a construction unit. We give examples of forms by the proposed method to demonstrate the applicability to design forms.

summary Parametric design and digital fabrication are becoming ubiquitous tools to contemporary architecture and imply a different design process. With this new perception of the contemporary production we have designed a façade sun shade using fractal geometry as a generative system. Fractals are complex shapes generated with simple rules, so it is relatively easy to change the final geometry when we work with parameters. The design process made possible the creation of different options for the brise-soleil using parametric definitions. Some solutions were physically modeled using rapid prototyping, which we consider an essential tool in the contemporary design process. The whole process conducted to the conclusion that architects need to incorporate a new set of skills when working with digital fabrication. summary This paper discusses the potential of the application of principles of fractal geometry in small scale design, using the design of parametric furniture as an example. It begins by summarizing the fundamental mathematical principles of fractals and the, relatively limited, application they have had so far in design. A theoretical stance is taken, viewing fractals as form-generators with significant potential. From this, the main principles of a computational design methodology are established, drawing on parallels from other design periods. As proof-of-concept, the paper presents the application of the methodology in a specific brief for the design of a piece of furniture, accompanied with images that document and illustrates the process. A parallel is established between the 21st century methodology of digital craftsmanship presented here, and the 19th century Arts & Crafts movement. Finally, the paper presents directions for further research which would allow the utilization of fractals in different design scales.

summary As evidence from recent years has demonstrated, box-counting provides an objective fractal analytical method to evaluate the visual complexity of architecture. This paper for the first time explores the potential of box-counting with regard to the work of the Viennese architect Adolf Loos (1870-1933). Loos is seen as the pioneer of modern architecture, as someone who anticipated the International Style. This impression derives from his resentments towards the ornament, expressed especially in his texts. However, Loos did not reject ornamentation in general. Thus, the group of smooth plastered facades provides a narrowed view on his overall architectural concept. A more differentiated view on Loos' oeuvre is not new; however, the author further develops the possibilities of describing facades geometrically by using an implementation of the fractal analytical method, especially created for facades. This paper not only focuses on the possibility of grouping facades with similar characteristic values, but considers other aspects of Loos' design such as space as well.

summary The cosmological nature of Islamic architecture makes it a useful case study for the capability of the adaptation, assimilation and accommodation with the development of evolutionary algorithms and their applications in architectural design. Genetic algorithm derives its structure from the observation of nature. We shall review the concept of intelligent agents and their organization into complex adaptive systems as well as genetic-type algorithms for learning and evolution. Since algorithmic art consists of generation of images on the basis of algorithms, algorithms can be viewed as a notation, and notation is something that music has but visual artefacts in general miss. This paper aims to discover the role of evolutionary algorithms in historical Islamic architecture. Also, we shall try to investigate the way in which the future development could occur not only through the discovery of new facts or theories, but also through the rise and dissemination of new visions having different explanation of Islamic architecture that considers it as a result of serious application of formation through evolutionary genetic algorithms.

summary The virtual teams are largely encouraged by the recent technological devices supporting different-place collaboration and suggest today new forms of organization. This one is geographically dispersed and regroups all the competencies required for the work to be done. In such a context, trust is essential to guarantee the performance of team. It is indeed a necessary component for initiating the work relationship and to overcome the inherent risk. The capacity of the groups to communicate about the objectives and strategies as well as to readjust them according to the context (i.e. reflexivity) is another element important for the group's performance. This article suggests analyzing these notions of trust and reflexivity within virtual teams in the context of an academic experiment where students are geographically dispersed and have to produce an architectural project.

summary This paper aims to discuss the potentials of novel modes of participatory design in relation to the latest developments in Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). The first part of the study involves the extraction of the basic principles from the extraordinary cases of the Medical Faculty Housing by Lucien Kroll (1976) and Cedric Price's Fun Place (1965) in which various forms of ICT-enabled participation were conceived. In the second part, we reframe the existing ICT tools and strategies and elaborate their potentials to support the modes of participation performed in these two cases. As a result, by distilling the created knowledge, we introduce a model of ICT-enabled design participation which exploits a set of collective action tools to support sustainable ways of self-organization and bottom-up design.

summary The digital age is facilitating an ever increasing trend of globalized language and culture. Environmental issues are no longer a static concept as climate change and population growth force concepts of adaptability. What does this mean for the academy? How do we educate students to contemplate future urban scenarios and make some organization out of this more dynamic, complex future? The following paper seeks to disseminate a spring 2014 design studio at The University of Arizona where these issues were addressed, with Mexico City as a test bed. Computation has become a vital tool in the organizational process of these complex issues and big data. Various digital tools and platforms were explored in the studio to determine which ones would be most useful in modeling, mapping, designing and processing some of the complex relationships that are present in urban environments today.

summary The Red Queen Hypothesis is a research project on parasitic architecture, developed as a case study application of knowledge inherited from the fields of stigmergy-based systems, swarm intelligence and Embodied Embedded Cognition. The project aims to provide a possible answer to the increasing demand for the redevelopment of abandoned post-WW2 buildings in northern Italy, proposing an alternative to preservation logics in through strategies based on intrusion, adaptation and growth focusing on the relationships between different systems (host/parasite) and innovative fabrication techniques. Implementing such approach in a non-trivial way entails enabling access to increasing degrees of complexity and self-organization in the computational design approach while keeping the whole process coherent throughout its unfolding. The case study is an abandoned factory in Bergamo (which has become an urban landmark for a socially intricate community) a multi-agent system based parasitism strategy was implemented as design process for its transformation and reuse as spaces for community and cultural expression.

summary Architectural competitions have been traditionally used to select best design practices. The basis of assessment for competitions has typically involved non-technical concepts of quality, subjective and emotional appreciations of experiences, and inseparable accord of formal, functional, aesthetic and contextual values (Rönn, 2011), rather than clear-cut objective and precisely measured values as in the engineering domain (Nashed, 2005; Nelson, 2006). Criteria for judgment usually focus on design parti and clarity of concept, novelty of architectural approach, context compliance, spatial organization, functional adaptability, economical solutions, and design flexibility. The assessment process, although presumably comprehensive and involving multiple evaluation techniques and resources, may still overlook important technical issues that may be fundamentally significant to the exclusion or approval of a given entry. This paper introduces a framework for assessing architectural competition entries aided by concepts of building information modeling (BIM).

summary Creativity with its various processes is involved in all design actions. Creativity used in architectural design is different than creativity in other domains. However, creativity in general with its related cognition processes has no general theory. This research proposes certain activities of initial architectural design phases in which the role of activity is important. The research proceeds to present a case study of two architectural design studios in which a VR environment is employed in order to investigate the effect of VR use on the creativity in those initial design phases. The research applies a methodology of qualitative and quantitative analysis. Various architectural design factors are neutralized to overcome the influence generated from human factors variation and design thinking prejudice on architectural designing and the associated creativities.

summary The paper will present one specific aspect of the PhD research called Cibersemiótica e Processos de Projeto: Metodologia em Revisão, funded by FAPESP, which in turn is linked to the Nomads.usp research group of the University of São Paulo. The paper discusses the relevance of communication and information management in the digital design processes from the synchronic study of concepts such as feedback loop, control and self-regulation. These concepts are present in both biosemiotic and interactive design of functional cycle proposed in 1934 by biologist Jakob von Uexküll, as in cybernetic development proposed by Gordon Pask in his sophisticated Conversation Theory in the early 1970’s.

summary Layout design has been supported by some computational tools, where fuzzy systems have been approved as an appropriate method to handle uncertainty in the early design stage. In this paper, a new mathematical model depending on the fuzzy logic and sets theory is proposed to assist in layout design. The model distinctly deals with spatial uncertainty in open planned designs, where there is no clear layout configuration or definite patterns of usage. The model calculates the possibility of occupancy according to space, function and user related parameters and logical rules. It also visualises the architectural plan as being comprised of sub-spaces formed by the distribution of those possibilities. Sub-spaces are characterised as “Fuzzy Architectural Spatial Objects” (FASOs). As a result, layouts are represented as an accumulation of FASOs showing a certain inhabitation pattern. Various layouts can be generated within the identity of FASOs. Architects can evaluate the layouts and propose new ones by organising the FASOs on the plan and considering their relations. After describing the model the paper demonstrates an application which aims to design a proper layout for a major exhibition hall in Istanbul.

summary As educators, we have been witness and party of ICT’s application in teaching architecture. From computer assisted design, representation models, dynamic and interactive visualization, until the arrival of digital fabrication, the incorporation of augmented reality and the interaction on mobile devices. Reflections on digital technology have generated discussions on architectural theory in order to find the source of architectural language inspirations. We find ourselves today in a context of important intellectual renewal aimed at the design in freedom.
