summary Layout design has been supported by some computational tools, where fuzzy systems have been approved as an appropriate method to handle uncertainty in the early design stage. In this paper, a new mathematical model depending on the fuzzy logic and sets theory is proposed to assist in layout design. The model distinctly deals with spatial uncertainty in open planned designs, where there is no clear layout configuration or definite patterns of usage. The model calculates the possibility of occupancy according to space, function and user related parameters and logical rules. It also visualises the architectural plan as being comprised of sub-spaces formed by the distribution of those possibilities. Sub-spaces are characterised as “Fuzzy Architectural Spatial Objects” (FASOs). As a result, layouts are represented as an accumulation of FASOs showing a certain inhabitation pattern. Various layouts can be generated within the identity of FASOs. Architects can evaluate the layouts and propose new ones by organising the FASOs on the plan and considering their relations. After describing the model the paper demonstrates an application which aims to design a proper layout for a major exhibition hall in Istanbul.

summary This paper is part of the research on Generative Design and is inspired by the ideas spread by the following paradigms: the Internet of Things (Auto-ID Center, 1999) and the Pervasive/Ubiquitous Computing (Weiser, 1993). Particularly, the research describes a number of case studies and, in detail, the experimental prototype of an interactive-design object: “Grow-1”. The general assumptions of the study are as follows: a) Developing the experimental prototype of a smart-design object (Figure 1) in terms of interaction with man, with regard to the specific conditions of the indoor environment as well as in relation to the internet/web platforms. b) Setting up a project research based on the principles of Generative Design.c) Formulating and adopting a methodology where computational design techniques and interactive prototyping ones converge, in line with the principles spread by the new paradigms like the Internet of Things.

summary In contemporary architecture firms, most design drawings are done via use of 3D modelling software. This method requires advanced knowledge of the software in order to produce an accurate representation of space into the digital environment. The paper argues that conventional 3D visualization methods to design and analyse are restrictive to how well the user understands the space on a computer, as drawings are done ex-situ and without testing the design concept in-situ, hence there might be a level of disparity between the design and final fabrication. This is particularly a challenge when designing Urban Interaction Design concepts, as combinations of variables play a role in how the design will be received by the audience. Observing the design challenges for Urban Interaction Design and applying knowledge to architectural representation, potentially an alternative sketching process can be developed to alleviate the disparity between the conceptual design and post fabrication. This paper discusses an experimental process of using wireless spatial sensing devices to digitize physical spaces in real-time and to use on-the-spot analysis. In its conclusion the paper argues that this method enables the designer to gain advanced conceptual understandings of the intended space and thus make more informed decisions.

title No Fear of Ridicule - deploying plaything technology for credible representations of urban landscape

summary As technology affine urban landscape architects, working in Asian mega cities, we conduct research on urbanity beyond prime premises and nice neighbourhoods with maximum tourist potential. We roam through crowded and super narrow, widely informal city layouts, where we apply our digital fieldwork equipment and conduct design work. In these places we test low cost cameras and camera drones, tools that had been developed as documentation equipment for outdoor sportspersons respectively playthings for all the world. Technically limited, if not insufficient and physically labile, these basic tools help us to experiment in the field without problematic loss risks and without scaring people on site. In this paper, we describe a method of on-site data and image gathering, which allows the processing of 3D models of labyrinthine informal city spaces. The result of our study is a three-dimensional puzzle of sufficient precision, making a widely inaccessible and undocumented piece of city terrain visible, understandable and designable.

summary This paper describes part of a wider research that aimed at using Shape Grammar to generate more diverse and interesting urban spaces in Brazilian Social Housing developments.A shape grammar corresponding to design patterns was inferred from the PREVI Lima urban plan developed by C.Alexander [1] in the 1970s.The grammar was inferred from the plan layout and from the text instructions (or pattern descriptions) presented by Alexander, and can be applied to design new plans within a wider formal universe than what the plan layout would suggest.The final section of the paper points towards the development of generic grammars as a way of encapsulating good qualities of certain design projects and applying them to new situations.

title Crafting the Virtual Sensory Environment: building performance simulation visualization as an enabler for creating sensory environments

summary The sensory virtual environment is defined as a cognitive method leading to a mental model of potential value in gaining insights of how building spaces may perform to enhance the sensory experience of occupants. For architects, creating a sensory and experiential space is the holy grail of design endeavours. So far, the results of the experiential and sensory success of buildings are dependent on the architects’ own experience and judgment of materials and compositions within the space. Currently the use of tools such as 3D Max provides an ocular experience of the crafted virtual space, rarely giving indications of daylight and possible sensory experiences of the indoor thermal and acoustic conditions. In practice testing the thermal, daylight and other environmental performances of buildings at design stage is within the remit of building services consultants for conformity regulatory checks, and is dominated by extensive 2D (graphs) information exchanges. There is a need to include other formats of visual information exchanges to facilitate decisions on sustainable buildings and to achieve performing sensory environments This paper presents an exploration of endeavours to test the virtual sensory space through visualizations of building performance and aims to provide recommendations on how to fuse endeavours to disseminate knowledge within the design team while creating an information exchange mechanism that captures experts’ explicit and tacit knowledge. Case studies will be presented on how building performance simulation tools are used to provide matrices of relations to indicate the building performance, thermal comfort, daylight and natural ventilation and were used as an aid for architectural design decisions to create sensory environments.

summary The general scope of this paper is to present the development of an approach for the generation of possible space layouts in the early stages of design. The approach sets out to bridge the gap between the free form brainstorming of the sketching designer and the deterministic parametric model of the computational designer. A new responsive design tool is developed; applying physical based modelling techniques to a computational environment. Springs and particles automates the initial placement and sizing of the spaces, and allows continuous user and software interaction. Keeping the design process alive, through springs that connects everything to everything and allows topology to change, opposed to the strict hierarchy and constraints of traditional parametric design. Thus instead of the topology being determined by initial constraints, the layout will be generated by probabilities of spaces to connect. Letting the storyline of potential users give answers to possible space layouts.

summary The paper presents an undergoing research that aims at developing a system, which will allow customer participation in a design of mass-customized houses. The system will allow customers to self-configure a house in a preferred way in relation to the site where it is going to be constructed and with a respect to the prescribed architectural rules. Introducing customer participation in the design process of mass-customized houses allows users to find out individual design goals transforming the design process from being ill-defined into goal-oriented. The proposed system for customer participation could become feasible alternative to the traditional process of provisioning affordable houses improving the living quality in these market areas where architectural knowledge is unaffordable and missing.

summary This paper discusses an MAS (multiagent system) based approach to generating architectural spaces that afford better modes of human movement. To achieve this, a pedestrian simulation is carried out to record the data with regard to human spatial experience during the walking process. Unlike common practices of performance oriented generation where final results are achieved through cycles of simulation and comparison, what we propose here is to let human’s movement exert direct influence on space. We made this possible by asking "humans" to project simulation data on architectural surroundings, and thus cause the layout to change for the purpose of affording what we designate as good spatial experiences. A generation experiment of an exhibition space is implemented to explore this approach, in which tentative rules of such spatial manipulation are proposed and tested through space syntax analyse. As the results suggested, by looking at spatial layouts through a lens of human behaviour, this projection-and-generation method provides some insight into space qualities that other methods could not have offered.

summary When working on urban planning projects there are usually multiple aspects to consider. Often these aspects are contradictory and it is not possible to choose one over the other; instead, they each need to be fulfilled as well as possible. Planners typically draw on past experience when subjectively prioritising which aspects to consider with which degree of importance for their planning concepts. This practice, although understandable, places power and authority in the hands of people who have varying degrees of expertise, which means that the best possible solution is not always found, because it is either not sought or the problem is regarded as being too complex for human capabilities. To improve this situation, the project presented here shows the potential of multi-criteria optimisation algorithms using the example of a new housing layout for an urban block. In addition it is shown, how Self-Organizing-Maps can be used to visualise multi-dimensional solution spaces in an easy analysable and comprehensible form.

title The Relationship between the Governmental and Syntactic Cores: The case of Tripoli, Libya

summary This study examines the relationships between the governmental cores composed of the governor's palace and the buildings of ministries, and the syntactic cores composed of the most integrated spaces defined using the ‘Space Syntax’ techniques, over three historical phases of Tripoli, Libya: the early, colonial, and postcolonial phases. Tripoli was chosen for the study because each of its historical phases was distinguished by different political, social, and/or cultural systems. The early phase represented the Islamic systems; the colonial phase represented the Italian and British systems; and the post-colonial phase represented the regional-modern systems. The study looked at the relationships between the governmental cores and the syntactic cores of the city by overlapping the public/governmental buildings with the syntactic structures of the axial maps of six morphological frames (or maps) representing six morphological periods – two frames for each historical phase of the city. In the study, a close relationship between the governmental and syntactic cores was observed. During the early and colonial phases, the city had same governmental core but different syntactic cores. In contrast, during the post-colonial phase the city had different but overlapping governmental and syntactic cores. The study is important for it helps explain the role of the governmental and syntactic cores in the formation and transformation of the city over time. As a result, the study also helps explain the relationship between functional morphology, which examines the relationship between function and structure, and the spatial morphology, which examines the relationship among the spaces of a structure.

summary The urban green space positively affects the quality of the environment and urban life. To estimate the layout of urban green spaces, especially to describe the real difference of regional properties, the influenced zone of each green space should be identified firstly. The influenced zone can be used to quantitatively analyse the difference of regional environmental quality. The identification of the influenced zones of green spaces actually is a problem of space partitioning. The study compared three methods mostly used in space partitioning. The regular grid is a most common partitioning method. It is easy to use, but cannot link the grid with green space separately. Voronoi algorithm is a constructive method which partitions the urban space based on each green. Another approach is the application of gravity models, which assumed analogies between human behaviour and Newtonian gravity laws. The gravity model could calculate the probabilities of residents to choose the green space and partition the urban space. In the comparison of these three methods, we conclude that the gravity model can take more characteristics of the green space as the calculating parameters. The gravity model is a better method to estimate the layout of urban green spaces.

summary This paper investigates a voxel-based approach to automate the space construction of an ill-defined building information model, namely, a building model without specific spatial definitions. The objective is to provide a simplified representation through clustering voxels to reconstruct spaces, with which a spatial topological algorithm is designed to infer the implicit connectivity. This approach is treated as the first step to automate building information exchange for building performance simulation and knowledge-intensive reasoning.

summary The use of generative systems has been widely investigated in the architectural design process through different procedures and levels of autonomy to generate form.The digression from abstract pre- existing notions of vocabulary and rules – even when resulting in emergent forms – to address complex real- world contexts is yet a challenging undertaking.This paper explores incorporating context in the process of designing using generative systems from ideation to fabrication, and explores the relationship between the emergent nature of generative design and the situated act of designing while using generative design tools.A course offered for 3rd year architecture students at the Department of Architecture, Ain Shams University, Egypt, was designed for this purpose. 110 students employed systems including shape grammars, L- systems, fractals and cellular automata, to design and fabricate 8 group projects.A discussion around emergence and situatedness is presented, with special attention to the designing process from ideation to fabrication.

summary Historic buildings are fruitful sources of architectural concepts which can be used to generate new designs characterized by authenticity and originality. Design computing methods have used varied techniques of knowledge representation in deriving new designs from architectural precedents such as: case-based design and genetic algorithms. This research has adopted genetic algorithms, a simulation of biological evolution to generate new plans from old ones belonging to the Islamic historical schools. The implemented method represents architectural knowledge in a simple schema (chromosome) and allows it to be modified easily using crossover operation to generate new plans with high fitness value. The research considered the fitness function as a measure of differences among the design characteristics of the sample of the Islamic schools. The results show the effectiveness of genetic algorithms in both analyzing past precedents and synthesizing their characteristics to produce new designs.

summary This paper investigates making as a process that brings together diverse materials and combines their flow in anticipation of what might emerge. Ingold calls this approach the textility of making, which gives priority to the formation of materials as a process, in which form is generated through interventions within fields of forces and currents of materials - not through a predefined notion of an ideal outcome. The approach opposes the Aristotelian hylomorphic approach, which focuses on final products. This paper investigates textiles techniques and their potential for simultaneously creating ornamental and structural systems. This work is conducted through a sequence of architecture design studios, producing the case studies found in this paper. Within the paper different examples of textile systems are introduced ranging from a Semperian approach (wall as dress) to form finding experiments with active textile materials - demonstrating the potential for methods utilizing material agency to inform architectural design

summary This paper presents a concept of folding as a form-generator for a structural system that allows the ability to deploy large spanning structures. The presented approach studies the embedded kinetic possibilities of folded structures and focuses on a parametric modeling process that allows structural performance evaluation of different types of the same origami family in order to optimize the geometry for a given scenario. The workflow between scripting based form generation - within Rhinoceros and Excel - and LS-DYNA is presented in detail. Additionally, within the context of an architectural project we discuss the question of scalability from a thin microstructure to a thickened roof structure.

title Supporting Tools for Early Stages of Architectural Design

summary In architectural design, pencil and paper remain the most frequently used media to create freehand drawings to support early design stages. Digital tools conventionally used by architects lack appropriate functionalities and do not offer friendly interfaces for the early stages of architectural design.These are the bad news.The good news are twofold: a) hardware already available can help freehand designers todigitally express their first ideas; and b) functionality principles present in experimental software combined with appropriate hardware could successfully provide a friendly and intuitive human-computer interaction in the early stages of architectural design.This paper takes special attention to the way architects interact with computers, how input devices constrain possible interactions and how functionalities can be explored through these interactions.The article summarizes basic principles to be considered in the development of an all-in-one software and create a scenario whereby these principles are simulated on a hypothetical software to be used during the early stages of architectural design.

title Evolutionary Optimisation of Semitransparent Building Integrated Photovoltaic Facades

summary The optimisation of semi-transparent building integrated photovoltaic facades can be challenging when attempting to find an overall balance performance between conflicting performance criteria. This paper presents a three-phase design optimisation method that maximises overall electricity savings generated by these types of facades by simulating the combined impact of electricity generation, cooling load, and daylight autonomy. Two demonstrations are performed, with the difference being that the second demonstration uses an enhanced model for calculating daylight savings that takes into account the use of blinds to counteract glare. For both demonstrations, the three-phase optimisation method significantly reduces optimisation run times. Comparing the design variants evolved by the two demonstrations, the use of the enhanced daylight savings model results in a total electricity savings that is more accurate but in terms of visual differentiation, the difference between the optimized design variants is relatively small.

summary This paper describes the work in progress of a research on Neurodesign and a previously described process entitled Augmented Iterations [Cutellic and Lotte, 2013]. Within this broader field of research and design explorations, we will focus on describing and comment results obtained in the neuroselection of shapes among a continuously varying flow of visual stimuli. Eventually, these results will lead to the identification of a non-linear and non-convergent potential for the human-based computation of iterative and generative designs.
