summary This paper presents a proposal for a cellular brise-soleil system appropriate for tropical humid climates. The system controls thermal gains whilst allowing for specific lighting requirements, permitting, in many cases, interior thermal and light comfort conditions without the use of thermal machines or artificial lighting. The development of the system involved a definition of variable design parameters and areas of performance evaluation and optimization, plus construction detailing development represented by a first project to be completed in 2014. Even if the geometrical definitions, optimization processes and production machinery are relatively simple and not particularly new to anyone in the field, it is claimed that the use of such already widely available technologies at this basic level, when solving relevant problems, has still to be used in generalised ways by common designers, and with the example shown, this paper wishes to promote such prospect.

summary The last decade have seen substantial calls and increasing pressure for developing an integrated design teaching framework, where sustainability is an imperative priority. This paper focuses on presenting a taxonomy of the main challenges encountered within the educational domain, in the attempt to reach an effective integration. The paper also presents a set guidelines to address and try to resolve the noted challenges. As the use of Building Performance Simulation (BPS) applications is a central approach in this process aiming to reach energy efficient buildings, the paper focuses on the shortcomings noted as a result of the use of these applications in the design studios, with particular emphasis on the thermal and lighting aspects of the simulation. The taxonomy presented is a summary of the findings from literature review, as well as the surveys results which were part of the author's research project discussed in the paper.

summary This paper reflects a collaborative, research led design project, aiming to explore the potentials offered by incorporating parametric / generative tools and performative lighting simulation software in order to design and fabricate a small pavilion for the School of Architecture. The Deceptive Landscape pavilion was designed in the framework of a masters level, research led, and collaborative design studio. During its intense 12 weeks schedule, student teams were asked to explore and apply generative / parametric tools such as Rhino and Grasshopper, in order to design and later construct a small pavilion, with a theme of their choice. In addition, each team was asked to optimise their design proposal by embedding environmental software plug-ins (e.g. DIVA for Rhino) in their design process, thereby aiming to re-inform their parametric models and set performance targets. Finally each team was expected to propose a file to factory fabrication technique, following all constrains of a limited, predetermined budget. The most convincing and consistent proposal, was then chosen for fabrication. The finalised project serves as verification of the effectiveness of the design system and teaching methods used.

summary This article investigates modern unbuilt houses designed by Vilanova Artigas and Carlos Cascaldi in Sao Paulo. The results indicate peculiar indoors features of these residences. Starting from scanned original drawings it was possible to produce 3D geometric models, and the simulation of the materials appearance in the interior spaces of these houses. The programs of these six residences are organized in half-levels, ramps, double height, inner courtyard, zenithal lighting and structural solution defining architecture. The goal is to investigate through renderings and walkthroughs in animations how the architects defined the internal spaces, establishing connections and visual-spatial continuity between floors.

summary Luminance contrast has been identified as an effective depth cue through perceptual studies using digital images generated by the integrated technologies of physically based lighting simulation and perceptually based tone mapping. However, the prior established framework utilizes a single camera viewpoint, failing to address the binocular vision of the human visual system. In this study, the computational framework is extended to incorporate 3-dimensional (3D) stereo display technology. Psychophysical experiments were conducted to investigate the depth effect of luminance contrast on the experimental scenes presented on conventional and stereo displays. The objective of this study was twofold: first, to investigate the effect of luminance contrast on depth perception, considering binocular vision; second, to further advance the visual realism of the computer-generated environment to reflect the perceptual reality of static pictorial and binocular disparity cues.

summary When thinking about the future vision of a city, having in mind recent development in digital technologies and digital design tools we are inclined to expect new building structures which incorporate this technology to better help us manage the complexity of life, and to simplify our daily lives and tasks. The idea behind this research paper lies in design of such structures, which could be put inside an urban context and engage in creating a built environment that can add more to the quality of life. For us Interactive architecture is architecture that is responsive, flexible, changing, always moving and adapting to the needs of today. The world is becoming more dynamic, society is constantly changing and the new needs it develops need to be accommodated. As a result architecture has to follow. Spaces have to become more adaptive, responsive and nature concerned, while having the ability for metamorphosis, flexibility and interactivity. Taken as a starting point of this idea is a specific module from graduation project in 2014 "The Unexpected city", where it was possible to test out first ideas about interactive and flexible objects in an urban environment.

summary Several architectural studies tackled the methodologies of teaching the architectural design subject in general and their relation to the use of computer in particular. The trends varied in accordance with the research that is relevant to the subject due to its importance in generating new architectural models, but it didn’t crystallize a theoretical framework that identifies clear and specific vocabularies related to the methodology of teaching the computer-aided architectural design. The current study discusses the importance of this concept in an attempt to explore the particular problem represented by the non-clarity of this methodology in the department of architecture in Mosul University. Therefore, the problem of the research crystallized and its objective and its methodology were identified and this was represented by constructing a theoretical framework which includes several main items. Then the theoretical framework was applied to selected projects of architectural department students in order to manifest the particularity of teaching the computer-aided architectural design. Results showed the distinction of this department as this methodology led to the derivation of different architectural products in accordance with the particular effects using the computer technologies. The results also manifested the change in the architectural design trend that was caused due to the digital intervention in the way of the student's thinking from one hand and the components and the elements of the building from the other hand that the quality of the design can be improved by using the computer and the quantity will be more in shorter time.

summary The digital age is facilitating an ever increasing trend of globalized language and culture. Environmental issues are no longer a static concept as climate change and population growth force concepts of adaptability. What does this mean for the academy? How do we educate students to contemplate future urban scenarios and make some organization out of this more dynamic, complex future? The following paper seeks to disseminate a spring 2014 design studio at The University of Arizona where these issues were addressed, with Mexico City as a test bed. Computation has become a vital tool in the organizational process of these complex issues and big data. Various digital tools and platforms were explored in the studio to determine which ones would be most useful in modeling, mapping, designing and processing some of the complex relationships that are present in urban environments today.

summary This project sets up a design framework that promotes augmenting the human body's interactions exploring methods for merging and blending the users of physical and virtual environments, through the design of wearable devices that are embedded with sensors and actuators. This allows for haptic and visual feedback through the use of data that reflects changes in the surrounding physical environment, and visualized in the immersive Virtual Reality (VR) environment. We consider the Body Architectures project to serve as mechanisms for augmenting the body in relation to the virtual architecture. These wearable devices serve to bring a hyper-awareness to our senses, as closed-loop cybernetic systems that utilize 'digitized' biometric and environmental data through the use of 3D scanning technologies and cloud point models, virtual reality visualization, sensing technologies, and actuation. The design of Body Architectures relies on hybrid design, transdisciplinary collaborations, to explore new possibilities for wearable body architectures that evolve human-machine-environment interactions, and create hyper awareness of the temporal, atmospheric qualities that make up our experience of space, as 'sensorial envelopes' (Lally 2014).

summary Rethinking Comprehensive Design—the 19th International Conference on Computer-Aided Architectural Design Research in Asia (CAADRIA 2014)—emphasises a cross-disciplinary context to challenge the mainstream culture of computational design in architecture. It aims to (re)explore the potential of computational design methods and technologies in architecture from a holistic perspective. The conference provides an international forum where academics and practitioners share their novel research development and reflection for defining the future of computation in architectural design. Hosted by the Department of Design, Engineering and Management at the Kyoto Institute of Technology, CAADRIA 2014 presents 88 peer-reviewed full papers from all over the world. These high-quality research papers are complimented by 34 short work-in-progress papers submitted for the poster session of the conference. The conference proceedings were produced by a motivated team of volunteers from the CAADRIA community through an extensive collaboration. The 88 full papers rigorously double-blind reviewed by the dedicated International Review Committee (consisting of 74 experts), testify to CAADRIA’s highly respectable international standing. Call for abstracts sent out in July 2013 attracted 298 submissions. They were initially reviewed by the Paper Selection Committee who accepted 198 abstracts for further development. Of these, 118 full papers were eventually submitted in the final stage. Each submitted paper was then assessed by at least two members of the International Review Committee. Following the reviewers’ recommendations, 91 papers were accepted by the conference, of which 88 are included in this volume and for presentation in CAADRIA 2014. summary This paper is the culmination of the first phase of research in the development of adaptive surface conditions which can mitigate extreme climatic scenarios, specifically air pollution. How can the discipline of architecture address worst-case climate scenarios within inhabitable structures? The question asked throughout this case study and research project was essentially based on a critique of the architectural community’s utilization of sustainable technologies in design, and whether current design initiatives were in fact aggressive enough in their approach to “green” building. While assessing the probable environmental changes likely to affect the architectural discipline in the future, this research project developed computational simulations of polluted atmospheres in order to develop surfaces which would respond formally.

summary This paper presents an interactive fenestration system designed for the principal façade of a prototype sustainable dwelling. The system attains autonomous, responsive and interactive modes of operation, and is able to provide synchronous response to a wide variety of environmental conditions and user needs. The method to address the design of the system was to integrate electro-active materials and real time sensing and control technologies. The test was to implement a full-scale façade with the abovementioned capabilities. This presentation discusses the features, technologies and reasoning followed in the design and implementation of the façade.

summary The growth of urban areas and the increase of urban migrations caused an incorporation of industrialized areas in the development of cities. The difficulties related to city planning in these areas could be coped with more satisfactorily through the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Context ontologies plus reasoning rules to reuse old industrial buildings. The 'Context' entities and rules are studied using a Context Knowledge Model formalized with Protégé OWL(Ontology Web Language). The study was carried out on industrial buildings situated in southern Lazio - Italy - in particular a paper mill network. Applying GIS instruments to the study of these areas is not enough as designers can only obtain information, but not knowledge, which depends on the urban, historical, cultural, economic, environmental and juridical ‘context’. The goal of this research is to create a combination of these technologies to manage knowledge for a more aware design to regenerate old industrial areas with new uses.

summary Prior to the Industrial Age, most architecture was created by the master craftsman or within the vernacular trades where “design” and “making” were aligned. The Industrial Age, and most recently the Information Age, shifted the role of the architect away from that of the “master craftsman” to the professional “knowledge worker.” As a result, a divide between design and making in the practice of architecture occurred.  This shift impacted an essential part of the architect’s process by degrading the symbiotic relationship between mind and hand and limiting the immediate design consequences that only making can provide. But recent technological developments have changed the economic model of design and making in architectural practice and re-established this lost connection. Most importantly, it has provided new opportunities for craft, design, and architectural practice to align. The purpose of this paper is to examine these new opportunities and define what constitutes the digital vernacular. The paper will seek to define the digital vernacular by evaluating each of the following variables: materials, knowledge, and tools. Using normative practice as a control, the paper will conduct a comparative analysis of these variables by examining economic viability (cost-to-wage ratios), logistical feasibility (training & facilities), and skillset availability within the domain of architecture (insourced versus outsourced). Using this data, and resulting guidelines, the paper will demonstrate the successes and failures of a practice using the digital vernacular as its primary project delivery methodology. The focus of this research is not to build an inventory of equipment and methods; rather it is to develop a higher understanding of what constitutes vernacular practice within the digital age. Exploring the digital vernacular is not intended to seek new form-making, but to improve and inform understanding of traditional vernacular methods and to enable a new generation of master craftsmen. This clarity is imperative as to ensure the quality of design and making with emerging technologies and help to prevent high-volume, low-quality results.

summary The sensory virtual environment is defined as a cognitive method leading to a mental model of potential value in gaining insights of how building spaces may perform to enhance the sensory experience of occupants. For architects, creating a sensory and experiential space is the holy grail of design endeavours. So far, the results of the experiential and sensory success of buildings are dependent on the architects’ own experience and judgment of materials and compositions within the space. Currently the use of tools such as 3D Max provides an ocular experience of the crafted virtual space, rarely giving indications of daylight and possible sensory experiences of the indoor thermal and acoustic conditions. In practice testing the thermal, daylight and other environmental performances of buildings at design stage is within the remit of building services consultants for conformity regulatory checks, and is dominated by extensive 2D (graphs) information exchanges. There is a need to include other formats of visual information exchanges to facilitate decisions on sustainable buildings and to achieve performing sensory environments This paper presents an exploration of endeavours to test the virtual sensory space through visualizations of building performance and aims to provide recommendations on how to fuse endeavours to disseminate knowledge within the design team while creating an information exchange mechanism that captures experts’ explicit and tacit knowledge. Case studies will be presented on how building performance simulation tools are used to provide matrices of relations to indicate the building performance, thermal comfort, daylight and natural ventilation and were used as an aid for architectural design decisions to create sensory environments.

summary Skin is the primary shield between our body and its surroundings. It protects the body from the harmful environmental effects like dehydration and radiation from intense sunlight. Likewise, the outer layer, or skin of a building has the same function of protecting its inhabitants against the external elements. This research is a part of a larger investigation into geometrical patterning and layering of facades as an effective intervention between the outdoor space and the indoor environment to regulate the conditions for occupant thermal comfort. This paper reports on exploration of an approach for measurement, evaluation and feedback in the design workflow through a mixed digital -physical simulation platform (MDPS) based on the objectives of the larger study. For this purpose, it introduces a new way of analyzing thermal performance of double skin facades by using temperature sensors, Arduino, post visualization with MATLAB and digital energy simulation. The main aspects of this proposed workflow is the design of a thermal performance feedback loop as an integral part of the process of geometrical patterning design for façade.

summary This paper describes the design and testing of a mobile sensing kit for real-timeurban site analysis. It aims to contribute to a discussion on the importance ofsensing-based mapping of urban phenomena following our assertion that current delivery of urban analysis methodologies, with their emphasis on visuo-spatialanalysis only, fail to create maps that reflect the nuanced and layered interrelationships between the people and the physical environmental space they live in. In essence, the paper will bring to light the set up components and deployment of a mobile sensing kit that allows for usually mapped static invisible data (air quality, temperature, humidity) to be mapped as visible data. In other words, we want to explore how real-time geo-referenced data collection can enhance traditional data mapping and visualization methods enabling designers to understand better the urban space.

summary With the support of new urban science and technology, the bottom-up and human-centered space quality research has become the key to delicacy urban governance, of which the Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTCI) have a severe influence. However, in the studies of actual UTCI, datasets are mostly obtained from on-site measurement data or simulation data, which is costly and ineffective. So, how to efficiently and rapidly conduct a large-scale and fine-grained outdoor environmental comfort evaluation based on the outdoor environment is the problem to be solved in this study. Compared to the conventional qualitative analysis methods, the rapidly developing algorithm-supported data acquisition and machine learning modelling are more efficient and accurate. Goodfellow proposed Generative Adversarial Nets (GANs) in 2014, which can successfully be applied to image generation with insufficient training data. In this paper, we propose an approach based on a generative adversarial network (GAN) to predict UTCI in traditional blocks. 36000 data samples were obtained from the simulations, to train a pix2pix model based on the TensorFlow framework. After more than 300 thousand iterations, the model gradually converges, where the loss of the function gradually decreases with the increase of the number of iterations. Overall, the model has been able to understand the overall semantic information behind the UTCI graphs to a high degree. Study in this paper deeply integrates the method of data augmentation based on GAN and machine learning modeling, which can be integrated into the workflow of detailed urban design and sustainable construction in the future.

summary Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is a reliable tool for the analysis of outdoor and indoor climatic related conditions. Due to rapid population growth the need for dense urban developments and high-rise buildings became demanding. This led to creating the phenomenon of urban heat islands and deteriorating air quality and thermal discomfort. This research highlights the potential of adopting CFD as a simulation technique to investigate the complex fluid flows in urban thermal environment. It discusses the advantages and limitations of CFD tool. It describes the CFD simulation approach and the procedure for conducting CFD simulation. This paper also gives some examples of case studies of CFD assessment for indoor and outdoor urban environments.

summary The urban green space positively affects the quality of the environment and urban life. To estimate the layout of urban green spaces, especially to describe the real difference of regional properties, the influenced zone of each green space should be identified firstly. The influenced zone can be used to quantitatively analyse the difference of regional environmental quality. The identification of the influenced zones of green spaces actually is a problem of space partitioning. The study compared three methods mostly used in space partitioning. The regular grid is a most common partitioning method. It is easy to use, but cannot link the grid with green space separately. Voronoi algorithm is a constructive method which partitions the urban space based on each green. Another approach is the application of gravity models, which assumed analogies between human behaviour and Newtonian gravity laws. The gravity model could calculate the probabilities of residents to choose the green space and partition the urban space. In the comparison of these three methods, we conclude that the gravity model can take more characteristics of the green space as the calculating parameters. The gravity model is a better method to estimate the layout of urban green spaces.
