summary Reverse engineering is been applied in industry for many years, particularly in the context of the software industry, with the subsequent theoretical development, especially from the 1990s. In this paper we propose to realize their potential application to the field of design, and then characterize the concept of Reverse Design, associated with the idea of projectual deconstruction, concept that has great potential, from didactics to the optimization of materials and energy. Based on a literature review of the state, we will use the basic texts of reverse engineering to establish parallels, differences and contributions to the discipline.

summary Much of the available collaboration support tools focus on sharing of documents and managing projects that require planned activities. These tools fall short in meeting principle of least effort or taking into account of the reality of complex work patterns. We propose DiNa framework and system architecture for a topic centric as opposed to document-centric collaboration system using readily available devices. DiNa aims to complement existing approaches. Our primary goal is to seek answers for how these devices can better support collaboration without overloading the workflow. After a literature review and roleplaying exercises, the prototypes we developed demonstrate new interaction techniques for defining topics and address them in collaborators’ own terms. It uses different visualizations of the artefacts and their association with the topics, among which is a scalable timeline interface accessible from different platforms, to make the artefacts collected more meaningful in a given context. In this paper we present our recent prototype as a proof-of-concept and its initial evaluations followed by the lessons learnt from our studies on supporting collaboration in the wild. The evaluation outcome is suggestions for improving DiNa-based systems for effective collaboration.

title Approximating Computational Fluid Dynamics for Generative Tall Building Design

summary Background literature review, methodology, results, and analysis are presented for a novel approach to approximating wind pressure on tall buildings for the application of generative design exploration and optimisation.The predictions are approximations of time-averaged computational fluid dynamics (CFD) data with the aim of maintaining simulation accuracy but with improved speed.This is achieved through the use of a back-propagation artificial neural network (ANN) with vertex-based shape features as input and pressure as output.The training set consists of 600 procedurally generated tall building models, and the test set of 10 real building models; for all models in both sets, a feature vector is calculated for every vertex. Over the test set, mean absolute errors against the basis CFD are 1.99–4.44% (_:2.10–5.09%) with an on-line process time of 14.72–809.98s (0.028s/sample). Studies are also included on feature sensitivity, training set size, and comparison of CFD against prediction times. Results indicate that prediction time is only dependent on the number of test model vertices, and is therefore invariant to basis CFD time.

summary The cosmological nature of Islamic architecture makes it a useful case study for the capability of the adaptation, assimilation and accommodation with the development of evolutionary algorithms and their applications in architectural design. Genetic algorithm derives its structure from the observation of nature. We shall review the concept of intelligent agents and their organization into complex adaptive systems as well as genetic-type algorithms for learning and evolution. Since algorithmic art consists of generation of images on the basis of algorithms, algorithms can be viewed as a notation, and notation is something that music has but visual artefacts in general miss. This paper aims to discover the role of evolutionary algorithms in historical Islamic architecture. Also, we shall try to investigate the way in which the future development could occur not only through the discovery of new facts or theories, but also through the rise and dissemination of new visions having different explanation of Islamic architecture that considers it as a result of serious application of formation through evolutionary genetic algorithms.

summary This article proposes to study the process of parametric design integrated analysis and structural design. This application model is called Performative Model; the form is generated based on performance criteria. The digital tools facilitate the information flow between designers using parametric model and Finite Element Analysis. To research the method of Performative Model is proposed the development of a conceptual framework of lattice wind tower with the aim of a quantitative and qualitative structure optimization. Therefore, the parametric modeling will be done using Rhinoceros software, the plugin for creating algorithms Grasshoper and structural analysis plugin Scan & Solve.

summary The last decade have seen substantial calls and increasing pressure for developing an integrated design teaching framework, where sustainability is an imperative priority. This paper focuses on presenting a taxonomy of the main challenges encountered within the educational domain, in the attempt to reach an effective integration. The paper also presents a set guidelines to address and try to resolve the noted challenges. As the use of Building Performance Simulation (BPS) applications is a central approach in this process aiming to reach energy efficient buildings, the paper focuses on the shortcomings noted as a result of the use of these applications in the design studios, with particular emphasis on the thermal and lighting aspects of the simulation. The taxonomy presented is a summary of the findings from literature review, as well as the surveys results which were part of the author's research project discussed in the paper.

summary This research prefaces the need for engaging with endusers in early stages of design as means to achieve higher performing designs with an increased certainty for enduser satisfaction. While the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) community has previously used virtual reality, the primary use has been for coordination and visualization of Building Information Models (BIM). This work builds upon the value of use of virtual environments in AEC processes but asks the research question "how can we better test and measure design alternatives through the integration of immersive virtual reality into our digital and physical mock up workflows? " The work is predicated on the need for design exploration through associative parametric design models, as well as, testing and measuring design alternatives with human subjects. The paper focuses on immersive virtual environments (IVEs) and presents a literature review of the use of virtual environments for integrating enduser feedback during the design stage. In a controlled pilot experiment, the authors find that human participants perform similarly in IVE and the physical environment in everyday tasks. The participants indicated they felt a strong sense of "presence" in IVE. In the future, the authors plan on using IVE to explore the integration of multi agent systems to impact building design performance and occupant satisfaction.

summary The use of Building Information Modelling (BIM) and collaborative techniques have been identified as solutions to the problem of managing construction project information and data. However the implementation and success of BIM may stagnate due to issues associated with unsatisfactory technological interoperability, which can impede the flow of information through a project lifecycle. To gain further understanding of technological interoperability within a BIM-enabled project environment, a review of relevant literature was undertaken to assimilate key information and provide a framework for future research. An observational method of reviewing a series of data transactions between multiple BIM packages was then devised in order to assess interoperability issues, and inform future research design. Interim findings from the preliminary stage of this research project have been reported in this paper.

summary This work aims to review the literature on digital fabrication verifying the Brazilian status on a general view. Concerning the methodology, the research was carried out from 2004 to 2014 analyzing three aspects: 1. the situational context of digital fabrication; 2. digital fabrication in the design process; 3. the Brazilian status. The findings revealed the use of digital fabrication is mainly focused on the design process. Also, the most common objects in the research are the development of models, furniture and pavilions. Moreover, digital fabrication is increasingly being inserted in the syllabus of architecture schools. Brazil strikes in object production both in quantities and interests throughout the country.

summary The rapid development of digital technology has made architecture a succession of different evolutionary design methodologies. As a result, the rise of computationally driven processes has gain popularity in research and shows a great potential to dramatically improve the design process and productivity that evoke innovations in design practices wherein computer-based project plays a vital role. However, as these technologies rapidly develops and increasingly used in practice, there is a realization that substantial organizational and technological barriers exist that inhibit the effective adoption of these technologies in architectural practices wherein complex projects are being handled. Undeniably it happens in small architectural practices whereby resources are very limited. Relevant literature of the subject shows that research in innovations in manufacturing, product design, technology, construction and engineering practices is substantially conducted but research in digital innovation in design practices is very limited. This paper investigates the factors that impede the effective adoption of emerging digital technologies for the efficient delivery of design projects that are computationally and digitally driven. This involves evaluating digital technologies, technical, financial and organizational barriers when digital innovation is implemented. In order to gain insights of these issues, a pilot study was conducted from several small architectural organizations, and found out relevant attributes and pattern of variables that can be used in establishing a framework for digital innovation. summary Abstract Through the recent technological developments within the fourth industrial revolution, artificial intelligence (AI) studies have had a huge impact on various disciplines such as social sciences, information communication technologies (ICTs), architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC). Regarding decision-making and forecasting systems in particular, AI and machine learning (ML) technologies have provided an opportunity to improve the mutual relationships between machines and humans. When the connection between ML and architecture is considered, it is possible to claim that there is no parallel acceleration as in other disciplines. In this study, and considering the latest breakthroughs, we focus on revealing what ML and architecture have in common. Our focal point is to reveal common points by classifying and analyzing current literature through describing the potential of ML in architecture. Studies conducted using ML techniques and subsets of AI technologies were used in this paper, and the resulting data were interpreted using the bibliometric analysis method. In order to discuss the state-of-the-art research articles which have been published between 2014 and 2020, main subjects, subsets, and keywords were refined through the search engines. The statistical figures were demonstrated as huge datasets, and the results were clearly delineated through Sankey diagrams. Thanks to bibliometric analyses of the current literature of WOS (Web of Science), CUMINCAD (Cumulative Index about publications in Computer Aided Architectural Design supported by the sibling associations ACADIA, CAADRIA, eCAADe, SIGraDi, ASCAAD, and CAAD futures), predictable data have been presented allowing recommendations for possible future studies for researchers.

summary Rethinking Comprehensive Design—the 19th International Conference on Computer-Aided Architectural Design Research in Asia (CAADRIA 2014)—emphasises a cross-disciplinary context to challenge the mainstream culture of computational design in architecture. It aims to (re)explore the potential of computational design methods and technologies in architecture from a holistic perspective. The conference provides an international forum where academics and practitioners share their novel research development and reflection for defining the future of computation in architectural design. Hosted by the Department of Design, Engineering and Management at the Kyoto Institute of Technology, CAADRIA 2014 presents 88 peer-reviewed full papers from all over the world. These high-quality research papers are complimented by 34 short work-in-progress papers submitted for the poster session of the conference. The conference proceedings were produced by a motivated team of volunteers from the CAADRIA community through an extensive collaboration. The 88 full papers rigorously double-blind reviewed by the dedicated International Review Committee (consisting of 74 experts), testify to CAADRIA’s highly respectable international standing. Call for abstracts sent out in July 2013 attracted 298 submissions. They were initially reviewed by the Paper Selection Committee who accepted 198 abstracts for further development. Of these, 118 full papers were eventually submitted in the final stage. Each submitted paper was then assessed by at least two members of the International Review Committee. Following the reviewers’ recommendations, 91 papers were accepted by the conference, of which 88 are included in this volume and for presentation in CAADRIA 2014. Collectively, these 88 papers define Rethinking Comprehensive Design in terms of the following research streams: Shape Studies; User Participation in Design; Human-Computer Interaction; Digital Fabrication and Construction; Computational Design Analysis; New Digital Design Concepts and Strategies; Practice-Based and Interdisciplinary Computational Design Research; Collaborative and Collective Design; Generative, Parametric and Evolutionary Design; Design Cognition and Creativity; Virtual / Augmented Reality and Interactive Environments; Computational Design Research and Education; and Theory, Philosophy and Methodology of Computational Design Research. summary There is an absence of lightweight, sustainable construction materials in contemporary Haitian construction, a fact highlighted in the disproportionate loss of life in the 2010 Port-au-Prince earthquake. Between 2014 and 2017 the authors delivered a series of architectural design workshops in Haiti to raise awareness and develop design skills for bamboo using computational design tools. This paper provides a review of these workshops and a preliminary evaluation from surveys conducted with the course participants. Results showed architectural education had changed perceptions of bamboo and showed potential positive ecological impact due to subsequent reforestation activities instigated by participants. Weaknesses were in the lack of subsequent use of parametric modelling software. Bamboo material knowledge and a new architectural design methodology have been most relevant to their professional or academic work.

summary This paper introduces a counter-mapping attempt augmented by a Geoweb 2.0 platform in the context of two Belgian inner-city neighborhoods. The two aims of this project were to build a platform for the collective construction of a better understanding this dynamic super-diverse arrival environment and bring the various qualities and aspects of these super-diverse urban neighborhoods to foreground. In this study we report on the first results of this project which took place in Ghent and Brussels in 2014. Around 300 architecture students registered, interpreted and geocoded visible signs along preconceived tracks by means of a Geoweb 2.0 platform. Through field observations and interviews, the students created dynamic and interactive maps. We found that the large-scale mapping through Geoweb 2.0 makes it possible to discern different layers of use in arrival neighborhoods. These layers referred to different population groups which continuously have to negotiate each other's presence. Furthermore, the platform created the possibility to effectively and efficiently combine student fieldwork with online and offline lectures and offered students the opportunity to comment on, peer-review and learn from each other's insights. The findings will serve as an alternative information resource in the forthcoming Master's thesis graduation design studio which will be led by the first author.

summary OM model for assessment helps to improve teaching practice and student learning in studio courses. A visualization artifact is under development, which addresses need to manage qualitative and quantitative data generated. The aim of present phase is evaluation of different visualization resources. A review of several taxonomies of visualization resources is undertaken. From high-level perspective, design model taxonomy is suitable, as well as mixed methods, related to research by design approach. From low-level taxonomy, evolution of the display modes used in successive prototypes, from Cartesian structure diagrams to radial structure diagrams are analyzed, through iterations of heuristic evaluation.

summary When thinking about the future vision of a city, having in mind recent development in digital technologies and digital design tools we are inclined to expect new building structures which incorporate this technology to better help us manage the complexity of life, and to simplify our daily lives and tasks. The idea behind this research paper lies in design of such structures, which could be put inside an urban context and engage in creating a built environment that can add more to the quality of life. For us Interactive architecture is architecture that is responsive, flexible, changing, always moving and adapting to the needs of today. The world is becoming more dynamic, society is constantly changing and the new needs it develops need to be accommodated. As a result architecture has to follow. Spaces have to become more adaptive, responsive and nature concerned, while having the ability for metamorphosis, flexibility and interactivity. Taken as a starting point of this idea is a specific module from graduation project in 2014 "The Unexpected city", where it was possible to test out first ideas about interactive and flexible objects in an urban environment.

Consolidated on urban areas under development, the denominated 'inverted' approach is focused on the generation of recreational open spaces based on shadow conditions caused by existing built forms, and as a starting point for the construction of new urban envelopes as possible development areas. Unlike the existing method of the 'solar envelope', the 'inverted' approach shows an alternative procedure for the construction of built forms, based on pedestrian comfort caused by solar access in urban spaces rather than on indoor performance affected by the penetration of sunlight into buildings. As a method for the creation of urban envelopes, this approach attempts to enhance pedestrian comfort according to the study of solar access in urban areas. The 'inverted' approach is based on sun path data and is developed as a generative procedure, where the results of shadow range analyses and the different urban objectives work as input parameters for the generation of urban envelopes. Based on this methodology, two Grasshopper® custom components are developed.

summary Mesh-Mould is a novel robotic fabrication system for complex, non-standard concrete structures. The system folds together formwork and reinforcement, the two most labour intensive aspects of concrete constructions and offers an alternative approach to the current modes of prefabrication by suggesting an in-situ fabrication process (Figure 1). The paper outlines the development of the Form-work/Reinforcing Meshes through several iterations of physical and digital tests. Initially starting from simple triangulated 3D lattices, the structures evolved to become more complex and differentiated. The incorporating of flow enhancing ducts and surface perimeters with diverse surface aperture densities facilitates an optimal concrete flow and material distribution within the mesh.
