summary In contemporary architecture firms, most design drawings are done via use of 3D modelling software. This method requires advanced knowledge of the software in order to produce an accurate representation of space into the digital environment. The paper argues that conventional 3D visualization methods to design and analyse are restrictive to how well the user understands the space on a computer, as drawings are done ex-situ and without testing the design concept in-situ, hence there might be a level of disparity between the design and final fabrication. This is particularly a challenge when designing Urban Interaction Design concepts, as combinations of variables play a role in how the design will be received by the audience. Observing the design challenges for Urban Interaction Design and applying knowledge to architectural representation, potentially an alternative sketching process can be developed to alleviate the disparity between the conceptual design and post fabrication. This paper discusses an experimental process of using wireless spatial sensing devices to digitize physical spaces in real-time and to use on-the-spot analysis. In its conclusion the paper argues that this method enables the designer to gain advanced conceptual understandings of the intended space and thus make more informed decisions.

summary This paper explores an alternative approach for the creation of new built forms based on solar access analysis. Consolidated on urban areas under development, the denominated 'inverted' approach is focused on the generation of recreational open spaces based on shadow conditions caused by existing built forms, and as a starting point for the construction of new urban envelopes as possible development areas. Unlike the existing method of the 'solar envelope', the 'inverted' approach shows an alternative procedure for the construction of built forms, based on pedestrian comfort caused by solar access in urban spaces rather than on indoor performance affected by the penetration of sunlight into buildings. As a method for the creation of urban envelopes, this approach attempts to enhance pedestrian comfort according to the study of solar access in urban areas. The 'inverted' approach is based on sun path data and is developed as a generative procedure, where the results of shadow range analyses and the different urban objectives work as input parameters for the generation of urban envelopes. Based on this methodology, two Grasshopper® custom components are developed.

title The Visual Perception and Human Cognition of Urban Environments Using Semantic Scales

summary The purpose of this study was to examine visual perception and human cognition on the use of 3D models to support the proper essential means of urban design presentations. The perception and comprehension of spatial volumes was examined between these 3D visualizations as a means of presentations for urban design. The Semantic Environmental Description Scale was used to investigate the effectiveness of both static 3D conventional scale models and 3D digital modelling. By using the Semantic Environmental Scale, we can find the attributes which affects the visual perception between the users of traditional scale models and the 3D digital models. A survey was conducted to measure how the respondents describe an urban environment. There were two groups of users: The first group was only allowed to analyse the scale model and the other group was given the 3D digital animation model. This methodology allows us to identify these main factors or attributes which describes the laypersons perception between these visualization techniques. In this way, a quantitative way of predicting the overall assessment from these factors can be obtained, thus predicting the success of a specific visualization method and thereby evaluating these main factors that condition it.

summary Architecture took an evolutionary context over time, where designers were interested in finding pragmatic spontaneous appropriate solutions and met the needs of people in urban and architectural spaces. Whereas, in modern architecture an intense and varied competition happens between architects through various currents of thoughts , schools and movements, however, that creativity was the ultimate goal , and a the same time we find that every architect distinguishes himself individually or collectively through tools of architectural expression and design representation adopting a school of thought, using , for example, the leaves of various sizes and diverse technical drawing tools to accurately show that he can be read by professionals or craftsmen outside the geographical scope to which it belongs .With the rapid technological development which accompanied the digital craft in the contemporary world , The digital craft summed up time, distance and tools , so they gave the concept more appropriate accuracy , as virtualization has become the most effective tool for Architecture To reach the ideal and typical results at the practical level, or pure research. At the level of residential design and on the grounds that housing plays an important role in the government policies and given that housing is a basic unit common to all urban communities on earth , the use of different programs to show its typicality in two dimensions or in the third dimension - for example, using software "AutoCAD " " 3D Max " , " ArchiCAD " ... etc. - gave virtualisation smart, creative and beautiful forms which lead to better understand the used /or to be used residential spaces, and thus the conclusion that the life system of dwelling under design or under study , as can specifically recognize spatial structure in housing design - using digital software applying "Space Syntax" for example - in the shadow of slowly growing digital and creative development with the help of high-speed computers . the morphological structure of the dwelling is considered to be the most important contemporary residential designs Investigation through which the researcher in this area aims to understand the various behavioral relations and social structures within the projected residential area, using Space Syntax techniques. Through the structural morphology of dwellings can be inferred quality networks, levels of connectivity and depth and places of openness or closure within the dwelling under study, or under design. How, then, have intelligently contributed this digital craft to the perception of those spatial fixtures ? The aim of this research is to apply an appropriate program in the field of vernacular residential design and notably Space syntax which relate to the understanding and analysis of spatial structures, and also demonstrate its role at the morphological and spatial structure aspects, and prove how effective it helps to understand the social logic of domestic space through social individual/collective relationships and behaviors projected on the spatial configurations of dwellings. The answer to the issue raised above and at the methodological aspect, the study discussed the application of space syntax techniques on the subject. The findings tend to prove the efficiency by comparing samples of Berber vernacular domestic spaces from the Mzab, the Aures and Kabilya in Algeria, and has also led to ascertain the intelligibility of space syntax techniques in reading the differences between the behaviors in domestic spaces in different areas of the sample through long periods of time .

summary In this paper we aimed at the development of a novel tool to facilitate the structured analysis of architectural construction principles, materials and production methods in digital design and fabrication practices. In order to assist the understanding and teaching of these subjects, we employed a taxonomy of spatial design construction (Vrouwe 2013). By using the taxonomy, we analysed and categorised 34 parametric structures published in the IJAC Journal (2002-2014). Informed by this study, we aligned the initial taxonomy using various framing strategies. As a result we developed a new framework for spatial design construction specifically customised for the design and fabrication of parametric structures which can potentially serve as a constructive tool to create a novel design learning environment and integrated teaching strategies.

summary This paper documents and critically reflects upon the design, development, fabrication, and implementation of three pavilion projects developed during 2013-14. The core investigation of this work is the production of architectural spaces characterized by a quality of enveloping, diffuse, visual and spatial atmospheres. The principal activity of the research is aimed at refining methods for software-based exploration of formal complexities and the subsequent need to control variability and efficiency in fabrication output, using Grasshopper for Rhino to develop customized definitions particular to each specific project scenario. Linking the projects together are issues of scale, resolution of effect, and intent to move from disparate assemblies of structure and skin toward composite, manifold construction techniques that address multiple concerns (gravity, bracing, affect, etc) with a minimum of assembly. A material palette common to the current vernacular of CNC-based projects such as plywood, plastics, and other sheet materials is utilised. This work is invested in extending the possibilities of the architect and architecture as a discipline, extrapolating the workflow from these successive projects to the speculative impact of the work upon emerging possibilities of architectural construction and craft.

summary This paper explores an analog method of intaglio etching via digital /computational means. It qualifies an alternative approach to digital representation through the development of a narrative based architectural expression. The project, entitled Weerkas, was undertaken as an open call for the International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam 2014. The drawings used a combination of 3D computational modelling and AutoCAD drawing to explore emerging drawing technique derived from historical drawing methods. These digital drawings were photo-transferred and etched using a polymer intaglio plate to produce the final set of drawings. While analog / digital connections have been increasingly explored in architecture, it is rarely used to re-create past modes of production. While this paper counters a nostalgic approach to representation, it is anecdotal evidence of a pluralistic method in combining three-dimensional and two-dimensional drawing technique as an emerging form of architectural expression.

summary The influence of urban morphology on the energy consumption of a fabric has been recently established by research into the energy use of existing cities. This paper suggests a framework for generating environmentally adapted urban tissue by using genetic algorithms as form-finding processes. A series of multi-objective optimization algorithms are described. The geometric abstractions used as a basis for these algorithms are illustrated in detail, and the results and implications of these types of simulations are discussed. The methodology developed within this paper was tested on one km2 site in three cities of varying climates, and further expanded into a detailed case study within one city.

summary This paper outlines a working methodology for the parametric development of lattice shell structures combining surface topology and form-finding with the material constraints of straight lath members woven into a geodesic network. By employing non-uniform grid spacing, a wider typology of spatial types can be employed than can be achieved with traditional flat-matt lattice shell construction. As a parametric design tool and working methodology, some of the heavy lifting in form-finding and geodesic analysis can be off-loaded to the tool, such that a more comprehensive attention can be placed on other design criteria such as spatial development and environmental response while maintaining the elegance and economy of lattice shells.

summary Rethinking Comprehensive Design—the 19th International Conference on Computer-Aided Architectural Design Research in Asia (CAADRIA 2014)—emphasises a cross-disciplinary context to challenge the mainstream culture of computational design in architecture. It aims to (re)explore the potential of computational design methods and technologies in architecture from a holistic perspective. The conference provides an international forum where academics and practitioners share their novel research development and reflection for defining the future of computation in architectural design. Hosted by the Department of Design, Engineering and Management at the Kyoto Institute of Technology, CAADRIA 2014 presents 88 peer-reviewed full papers from all over the world. These high-quality research papers are complimented by 34 short work-in-progress papers submitted for the poster session of the conference. The conference proceedings were produced by a motivated team of volunteers from the CAADRIA community through an extensive collaboration. The 88 full papers rigorously double-blind reviewed by the dedicated International Review Committee (consisting of 74 experts), testify to CAADRIA’s highly respectable international standing. Call for abstracts sent out in July 2013 attracted 298 submissions. They were initially reviewed by the Paper Selection Committee who accepted 198 abstracts for further development. Of these, 118 full papers were eventually submitted in the final stage. Each submitted paper was then assessed by at least two members of the International Review Committee. Following the reviewers’ recommendations, 91 papers were accepted by the conference, of which 88 are included in this volume and for presentation in CAADRIA 2014. summary This paper is about designing a process to create a lightweight building envelope using a shrinkfilm. The advantage of using this material for architecture is that we can simply construct the complex geometry without requiring an expensive formwork. In addition to this, this research illustrates the methodology to control the 3-dimensional form of the shrink-film by using simple 2-dimensional patterns. These patterns enable us to easily manipulate the form. In this paper, the simulation and the prototyping are conducted in both physical and computational methods.

summary In order to enable designers to envision the behaviour of pedestrians with reference to specific environments, computational models of crowds and their movement become indispensable tools of evaluation as well as tools of creativity. In this paper, the model under development constitutes a generic model which incorporates ideas about agent-based systems. The simulation program comprises a support system for the designer to place virtual users in a context that bears analogous environmental traits of the area under study. The design problem which is addressed by the implementation deals with public squares for which the programmatic demands involve a broad spectrum of users of diverse idiosyncrasies. Our study attempts to elucidate how the variation in preferences of pedestrian movement which depend on various personal, situational and environmental factors, may influence the current use of a selected public space and underpin qualitative alterations compared to its initial design. The intent of the methodology is not to create a predictive tool of naturalistic human movement but to explore how spatial configuration can be assessed and developed through a simulation model of pedestrian behaviour.

summary Development of competence has been one of the major issues and goals of modern academic design and engineering education. The research assumes that a rule based reasoning approach could aid in the development of the design competences within the design studio. Support by its application in design and computational courses, the implemented tool is loosely based on the concept of grammatical design and shape grammars. The potential of implementing such methodology is explored by investigating its pedagogical applications as well as evaluating the possibilities of applying such methodology in the studio structure. The argument is supported by examples from the author's work with beginning and advanced design students from different design schools.

summary There is an absence of lightweight, sustainable construction materials in contemporary Haitian construction, a fact highlighted in the disproportionate loss of life in the 2010 Port-au-Prince earthquake. Between 2014 and 2017 the authors delivered a series of architectural design workshops in Haiti to raise awareness and develop design skills for bamboo using computational design tools. This paper provides a review of these workshops and a preliminary evaluation from surveys conducted with the course participants. Results showed architectural education had changed perceptions of bamboo and showed potential positive ecological impact due to subsequent reforestation activities instigated by participants. Weaknesses were in the lack of subsequent use of parametric modelling software. Bamboo material knowledge and a new architectural design methodology have been most relevant to their professional or academic work.

summary Prior to the Industrial Age, most architecture was created by the master craftsman or within the vernacular trades where “design” and “making” were aligned. The Industrial Age, and most recently the Information Age, shifted the role of the architect away from that of the “master craftsman” to the professional “knowledge worker.” As a result, a divide between design and making in the practice of architecture occurred.  This shift impacted an essential part of the architect’s process by degrading the symbiotic relationship between mind and hand and limiting the immediate design consequences that only making can provide. But recent technological developments have changed the economic model of design and making in architectural practice and re-established this lost connection. Most importantly, it has provided new opportunities for craft, design, and architectural practice to align. The purpose of this paper is to examine these new opportunities and define what constitutes the digital vernacular. The paper will seek to define the digital vernacular by evaluating each of the following variables: materials, knowledge, and tools. Using normative practice as a control, the paper will conduct a comparative analysis of these variables by examining economic viability (cost-to-wage ratios), logistical feasibility (training & facilities), and skillset availability within the domain of architecture (insourced versus outsourced). Using this data, and resulting guidelines, the paper will demonstrate the successes and failures of a practice using the digital vernacular as its primary project delivery methodology. The focus of this research is not to build an inventory of equipment and methods; rather it is to develop a higher understanding of what constitutes vernacular practice within the digital age. Exploring the digital vernacular is not intended to seek new form-making, but to improve and inform understanding of traditional vernacular methods and to enable a new generation of master craftsmen. This clarity is imperative as to ensure the quality of design and making with emerging technologies and help to prevent high-volume, low-quality results.

summary Spacer fabrics are 3D warp-knitted fabrics, which have a volumetric structure. Together with the capacity to differentially stretch and contract, these materials allow three dimensional which is specific to spacer fabrics. The authors present a computational design methodology which enables the generation of form based on these material characteristics and local, regional and global material manipulations. Such a process can not only generate functional surface articulations, but also control the forming of spatial textile geometries. As a resin infused composite structure the spacer fabric can serve as architectural construction and building envelope. This new methodology to develop fibrous and textile morphology is contrary to a traditional hierarchical design process, which is based on a linear strategy from design to implementation. The investigation methods are based on analogue material experimentation and integration of the materials behaviour into a computational design process. Such a feedback process can unfold potential material morphologies and performances of spacer fabric as an architectural material.

summary This paper introduces a new spatial analysis methodology based on visibility graphs. Through various design elements architects can create configurations where our visual field and the relations of spaces can be challenged in a combinatorial game beyond the easily accessible and understandable boundaries of the environment. This research explores the trans-spatial architectural elements, transparencies and projected realities that playfully challenge visibility, permeability and accessibility in built environment. The paper presents the computational problem of analysing spaces that include 'augmented visibilities' and areas with 'inaccessible but visible' locations, where dislocated multi-dimensional overlaps frequently occur. Furthermore, proposes a new 'mixed-directionality graph structure' and the definition of 'Augmented Visibility Graph Analysis' (AVGA) as a new spatial analysis methodology. AVGA overcomes limitations of current visibility graph analysis theories and allows the analysis of architectural and urban space that includes visuo-spatial overlaps, hybrid configurations and multi-dimensional information. Finally, a series of mathematical graph analysis measures and test cases associated with observations and experimental data from real spaces is presented in order to demonstrate AVGA.

summary In this paper a semiautomated morphological classification of urban space is addressed systematically by sorting through the volumetric shapes of public spaces represented as 3-dimensional convex and solid voids. The motivation of this approach comes from a frequent criticism of space syntax methods for lacking information on how buildings and terrain morphology influence the perception and use of public spaces in general and streets in particular. To solve this problem information on how façades relate with streets and especially information about the facades’ height should be considered essential to produce a richer and more accurate morphological analysis of street canyons and other open spaces. Parametric modelling of convex voids broadens the hitherto known concept of two-dimensional convex spaces considering surrounding facades’ height and topography as important inputs for volumetric representation of urban space. The method explores the analytic potentials of ‘convex voids’ and ‘solid voids’ in describing characteristics of open public spaces such as containment, openness, enclosure, and perceived enclosure, and using these metrics to analyse and classify urban open spaces.

summary For the built environment's transformation we are confronted with complex dynamics connected to economic, ecologic and demographic change (Czerkauer-Yamu et al., 2013; Yamu, 2014). In general, cities are complex systems being a "heterogeneous mosaic" of a variety of cultures and functions, characterised by diverging perceptions and interests (ibid). The juxtaposed perceptions and interests in relation to ongoing spatial processes of change create a particularly complex situation. Thus, for planning processes we are in need of approaches that are able to cope not only with the urban complexity but also allow for participatory processes to empower citizens. This paper presents the approach of using Digital Twins in virtual reality (VR) for civic engagement in urban planning, enriched with quantitative and qualitative empirical data as one promising approach to tackle not only the complexity of cities but also involve citizens in the planning process.
