summary Bricks have been used in the construction industry as a building medium for millennia. Distinct patterns of bricks depict the unique aesthetic intentions found in Roman, Gothic and Islamic architecture. In contemporary practice, the use of digital tools in design has enabled methodologies for creating new forms in architecture. CAD and BIM systems provide new opportunities for designers to create parametric objects for building form generation. In masonry design, there exists an inherent contradiction between traditional patterns in brick design, which are formal and prescribed, and the potential for new patterns generated using design scripting. In addition, current tools do not provide interactive techniques for the design of brickwork patterns that can manage constant changes parametrically, to inform and influence design process, by providing design feedback on the constructive and structural aspects of the proposed brick pattern and geometry. This research looks into the parametric techniques that can be applied to create different kinds of patterns on brick walls. It discusses a methodology for an interactive brickwork design within generative techniques. By integrating data between two computational platforms – the first based on image analysis and the second on parametric modeling, we demonstrate a methodology and application that can generate interactive arbitrary patterns and map it to the brick wall in real-time.

summary Building Information Modelling (BIM) applications are supported by various modelling tools, being expansive to deliver visualised geometry and databases simultaneously. But there is still a gap in visual communication amongst its professionals. Articulating the advantages of fully Web-based collaboration, this paper looks into how BIM tools make contribution to visual communication between different parties working collaboratively. A hybrid model of low-level and high-level interactions is tentatively conceptualised. Based on the hybridised model, a survey is conducted to elucidate a few experiential matters such as visual aesthetics, cognition and motivational impacts of visualisation in BIM tools. Following the survey, a discussion is oriented towards a new storytelling methodology with a novel term, namely gamification. Seeking motivating and efficient means of visual communication between human-human, human-tool and human-model interactions, the present study focuses on an enhanced legibility and appreciation of tools by those who are involved in BIM projects.

summary This paper presents the first application reports of BIM in the Architecture and Urbanism course at UNOCHAPECÓ University, Brazil. This course, which began inserting BIM in its curriculum in 2014, shows considerations on the implementation of BIM in a discipline of architectural design. In addition, this paper aims to understand the students’ viewpoint regarding the insertion of BIM through a questionnaire. As a result, it presents the reflections of this experience in teaching BIM. This study expects to generate contributions to new practices in the teaching of architecture and urbanism and to advance the knowledge about BIM.

summary This paper explores the effects of Building Information Modeling (BIM) and Parametric Design on the distribution of roles and responsibility in architectural practice. It will do so in consideration of the epistemological changes associated to new skillsets young graduates bring into practice and their positioning among experienced professionals on project teams. On one hand the paper will scrutinise how the use of BIM and Parametric design influences design and delivery of projects, their impacts on practice culture, and the associated roledistribution on project teams. On the other hand the paper will discuss to what extent academic institutions can or should respond to the challenges and the opportunities inherent to these changes in practice. A number of responses to the challenges and opportunities will be presented by the author for further consideration by others.

summary Building Information Modeling (BIM) is an effective tool students can use to learn how building components work together to secure necessary structural stability in the course of construction. In Summer 2014, students enrolled in the BIM class at Texas A&M University created a 4-dimensional construction simulation model of the Museu de Arte de São Paulo (MASP) to understand how the entire building is sustained by two huge concrete beams connected with four external columns. For this class project, students analyzed the building system while creating a 3-dimensional model of the museum. They also came up with a construction sequence that would best maintain structural integrity of the building in the course of construction, and then produced a short animation video explaining the MASP construction process. This paper presents how the MASP project helped students learn a unique building system and its construction sequence.

summary The shift from traditional CAD to BIM has created a significant potential to embed optimization processes in many stages of the design. The presented research is situated in the early design stage of inception and concept, focusing on analysis-driven-form-finding during the integrated design approach within a BIM environment. A custom analysis framework, has been developed and linked to a visual programming environment that allows the exchange of data with the parametric components of a BIM environment. The developed workflow and sequential split of functionalities enables a shared design environment for multiple experts and the design-team. The environment is intended to close the loop from analysis to parametric modeling in order to generate and evaluate building designs against performance criteria, with the aim to expedite the design decision process. The prototype has been presented to participants of the Deep-Space Cluster at SmartGeometry 2014.

summary In recent years, Building Information Models have become commonplace in building profession. The extensive use and increasing experience with BIM models offers new perspectives and potentials for design and planning. A recent stakeholder study conducted by the authors of this paper show that in practice models are no longer solely observed as culmination of knowledge in a 3d representation of future built structures, but as a source of information in itself. Experienced users of BIM want to Find Information within a model or across a set of these and Compare models in order to evaluate states of a model, differences in separate models or models from different point of time. Current BIM tools support both modes only in a rudimentary form. This paper discusses current modes of information query within and across BIM models, shows beneficial scenarios for building and planning practice through customised queries and exemplifies these on the base of a scripted tool. This customized approach is used to test approaches for a machine-based assessment of Level of detail and BIM-readiness in BIM models.

summary This paper presents a system that allows immersive visualizations to become a natural and integrated part of the current building design process. It is realized through three main components: (1) the Oculus Rift - a new type of Head Mounted Display (HMD) directed at the consumer market, (2) a real-time rendering engine supporting large Building Information Models (BIM) that is, (3) implemented as a plug-in in a BIM authoring software. In addition to provide details regarding the implementation and integration of the different components in our system, we present an evaluation of it from three different perspectives; rendering performance, navigation interface and the ability to support fast design iterations.

summary Increasing use of BIM has represented a continuing shift in traditional assumptions on how we navigate the design process. BIM is affording the student the ability to gain a greater understanding of their design ideas via the exploration of scale, spatial organisation and structure, amongst many other design layers, in increasing levels of detail, at the same point in the design process. Architectural education is at a delayed tipping point where architectural students are increasingly looking towards BIM to streamline their design process drawn by the production of realistic visualisation, but with a lack of knowledge and skill in its application. With a lack of guidance and understanding around the application of BIM, the use of BIM in this manner overlooks the potential of BIM to construct and test virtual simulations of proposed schemes, to support design enquiry. A historical concern for the pedagogy constructed around the students’ design process is the application of methods and techniques that support the progression through the design process, (Ambrose, 2014; dash mei & Safari, 2018). This study examines the design process of architectural students and the interaction between analogue and digital methods used in design. These primary modes of communication, offer the opportunity to query the roles and rules of traditional architectural conventions around ‘problem finding’ and ‘problem solving’, challenging the ‘traditional’ design process examined by pioneers like Bruner (1966) and Schon (1987). These approaches are distilled from the findings of the study and presented as guidance to those teaching in architectural aBIMemia to align pedagogic goals to methods of abstraction in this new era of design education reconsidering digital methods in design.

summary The introduction of BIM is assumed to introduce higher degrees of collaboration and efficiencies within design and construction practices. The potentials of this collaboration tend to focus on architecture, engineering and construction (AEC). Landscape architecture is rarely discussed within this model, technically nor conceptual. This paper explores the potentials of landscape architecture’s contribution to this new model of digitally driven collaboration. Drawing on interviews with the architects, landscape architects and engineers we explore the role of landscape architecture in the conceptualization, design and construction of the Victorian Desalination Plant, a highly political project located on an ecological sensitive coastal site. This paper highlights the centrality of the landscape digital model in mediating the critical intersection between the design parameters, physical attributes of the site, performative qualities of the design and the disciplines of architecture, landscape and engineering. This model also formed the dominant method for communicating the complex project to stake holders and clients. Significantly, this model was not developed into a BIM model, with content instead integrated into the architectural and engineering models. This research highlights one of the major difficulties in conceptualizing the positioning of landscape architecture within a BIM driven collaborative process. To operate effectively, landscape architecture must engage across the multiple scales and disciplinary intersections. Consequently, landscape architects must understand the digital and spatial languages of architecture and engineering, and conceptualise where their contribution lies within ‘paperless’ design and construction processes. This outcome differs significantly from current debates within landscape architecture which instead focus on the identification of ‘the’ specialist BIM software most appropriate to the discipline, as distinct from understanding BIM as a collaborative process.

summary Quality observatory of new housing was created by a collaborative effort between the University of the Andes and Prodesa (building company). From 2005 to 2014 about 800 new housing projects have been evaluated whose results evidenced quality problems. In 2013, a new housing project, which integrated quality criteria from the quality observatory, was commissioned to Universidad de los Andes by Prodesa. Parametric modeling was proposed and applied as a useful tool in the variables integration and the decision making process, to integrate and guarantee quality.

summary The merits and potential of Building Information Modelling (BIM) have been promoted for several years; however, its widespread adoption and development may potentially stagnate on account of a technical skills shortage, with insufficient personnel having the capabilities to successfully deliver projects. This shortfall covers all aspects of BIM, and building performance and life cycle analysis in particular. Programmes such as Ecotect, Revit, Green Building Studio, and Project Vasari, have transformed data capture and analysis, enabling architects and systems engineers to visualise site analyses and to test preliminary designs. As BIM is a relatively new process which continues to develop rapidly, Higher Education Institutions need to respond to currency and change while striving to provide graduates with the advanced skills to satisfy the needs of the building industry. This work presents a case study of the application of Autodesk's Building Performance Analysis Certificate (BPAC) as a driver for learning in support of the integration of BIM into the architectural curriculum.

The idea behind this research paper lies in design of such structures, which could be put inside an urban context and engage in creating a built environment that can add more to the quality of life. For us Interactive architecture is architecture that is responsive, flexible, changing, always moving and adapting to the needs of today. The world is becoming more dynamic, society is constantly changing and the new needs it develops need to be accommodated. As a result architecture has to follow. Spaces have to become more adaptive, responsive and nature concerned, while having the ability for metamorphosis, flexibility and interactivity. Taken as a starting point of this idea is a specific module from graduation project in 2014 "The Unexpected city", where it was possible to test out first ideas about interactive and flexible objects in an urban environment.

summary This paper explores a new approach in the architectural design process aiming to construct Makkah's architectural identity. Makkah, which is a city of unique sacred values, has been losing its battle to preserve it heritage buildings. Traditional districts with their heritage buildings have been cleared in order to construct skyscrapers to accommodate the increasing number of pilgrims. While some argue for preserving heritage buildings others insist in building more skyscrapers. Within these conflicting views, architects and urban designers use CAD software to document heritage buildings without informing the future architectural design process. This paper argues for adopting digital architecture as an approach for preserving the architectural heritage of Makkah by studying heritage buildings as systems that can be digitally represented in virtual world. This goes beyond the physical representation of heritage artefacts to investigate in depth the logic that guide the design process. The roushan, which is one of the unique heritage artefacts in Makkan's architecture can be an interface between reality and the virtual environment in the design process. This goes behind modeling the roushan, to employ the principle of virtual representation in the design process. The digital representation of heritage becomes the realm for research transforming the virtual into reality. The hope is to produce an architecture that is related to its local heritage, contemporary in design and responsive to its environment, as well as to advocate principles, references and techniques at the core of the design process, in an educational and professional context. In broader picture the goal is to achieve a city that is responsive to human activities adapted to changes, sustainable in physical forms and social relations and above all unique in design and identity.

summary Historic buildings are fruitful sources of architectural concepts which can be used to generate new designs characterized by authenticity and originality. Design computing methods have used varied techniques of knowledge representation in deriving new designs from architectural precedents such as: case-based design and genetic algorithms. This research has adopted genetic algorithms, a simulation of biological evolution to generate new plans from old ones belonging to the Islamic historical schools. The implemented method represents architectural knowledge in a simple schema (chromosome) and allows it to be modified easily using crossover operation to generate new plans with high fitness value. The research considered the fitness function as a measure of differences among the design characteristics of the sample of the Islamic schools. The results show the effectiveness of genetic algorithms in both analyzing past precedents and synthesizing their characteristics to produce new designs.

summary In architecture schools, where the ‘studio culture’ lies at the heart of students’ learning, taught courses, particularly technology ones, are often seen as secondary or supplementary units. Successful delivery of such courses, where students can act effectively, be motivated and engaged, is a rather demanding task requiring careful planning and the use of various teaching styles. A recent challenge that faces architecture education today, and subsequently influences the way technology courses are being designed, is the growing trend in practice towards environmentally responsive design and the need for graduates with new skills in sustainable construction and urban ecology (HEFCE’s consultation document, 2005). This article presents the role of innovative simulation modelling tools in the enhancement of the student learning experience and professional development. Reference is made to a teaching practice that has recently been applied at Portsmouth School of Architecture in the United Kingdom and piloted at Deakin University in Australia. The work focuses on the structure and delivery of one of the two main technology units in the second year architecture programme that underwent two main phases of revision during the academic years 2009/10 and 2010/11. The article examines the inclusion of advanced daylight simulation modelling tools in the unit programme, and measures the effectiveness of enhancing its delivery as a key component of the curriculum on the student learning experience. A main objective of the work was to explain whether or not the introduction of a simulation modelling component, and the later improvement of its integration with the course programme and assessment, has contributed to a better learning experience and level of engagement. Student feedback and the grade distribution pattern over the last three academic years were collected and analyzed. The analysis of student feedback on the revised modelling component showed a positive influence on the learning experience and level of satisfaction and engagement. An improvement in student performance was also recorded over the last two academic years and following the implementation of new assessment design.
