title Adaptive [skins]: Adaptation through smart systems

summary The project investigates responsive building skin systems that adapt to the dynamic environmental conditions to regulate internal conditions in a habitable space over different periods of time by exhibiting a state of motion and dynamism. Passive and active building skins are developed using shape memory alloys and pneumatic actuators through investigations of smart systems that integrate smart materials and smart geometries. Nitinol springs are integrated in tensegrity systems to actuate the adaptive behaviour, which forms the passive roof system. Owing to the complexity of the multi-parametric system, genetic algorithms are developed for system optimization and calibrated with physical prototypes at varied scales. The developed systems are tested against two distinct climatic models- New Delhi and Barcelona, and evaluated for performance, based on heat and light, which are quantified as solar gain and illuminance as principles, and daylight factor for evaluation purpose. New tool-sets are developed in the process by combining various digital tools, to create a real-time feedback and memory loop system.

title Evolutionary Optimisation of Semitransparent Building Integrated Photovoltaic Facades

summary The optimisation of semi-transparent building integrated photovoltaic facades can be challenging when attempting to find an overall balance performance between conflicting performance criteria. This paper presents a three-phase design optimisation method that maximises overall electricity savings generated by these types of facades by simulating the combined impact of electricity generation, cooling load, and daylight autonomy. Two demonstrations are performed, with the difference being that the second demonstration uses an enhanced model for calculating daylight savings that takes into account the use of blinds to counteract glare. For both demonstrations, the three-phase optimisation method significantly reduces optimisation run times. Comparing the design variants evolved by the two demonstrations, the use of the enhanced daylight savings model results in a total electricity savings that is more accurate but in terms of visual differentiation, the difference between the optimized design variants is relatively small.

summary Reverse engineering is been applied in industry for many years, particularly in the context of the software industry, with the subsequent theoretical development, especially from the 1990s. In this paper we propose to realize their potential application to the field of design, and then characterize the concept of Reverse Design, associated with the idea of projectual deconstruction, concept that has great potential, from didactics to the optimization of materials and energy. Based on a literature review of the state, we will use the basic texts of reverse engineering to establish parallels, differences and contributions to the discipline.

summary This paper looks at two distinct approaches to kinetic façades and smart building assemblies reminiscent of designs for the Institut du Monde Arabe and for Hoberman's Simon Center. The first approach uses Arduino microcontroller-guided kinetic components with a distinct assemblage of elements, each performing a dedicated function such as sensor, actuator, or logical processing unit. The second approach incorporates custom-designed smart materials-shape memory alloys (SMAs)-that not only complement or replace the need for electrically operated sensors or actuators, but also eliminate a microcontroller, since in this arrangement the material itself performs computational functions. The paper will discuss case studies that use physical computing and smart-material models as vehicles to discuss the value of each approach to adaptive design in architecture. Building on these observations, the paper looks into conceptual aspects of an integrated hybrid system that combines both computation approaches and unique opportunities inherent to these hybrid designs.

title An Automated Value-based Evaluation and Conditional Approval of Construction Submittals

summary To ensure compliance with specifications during construction, a formal review process, called the submittals process, is typically used whereby a contractor submits proposals for materials, equipment, and processes for owner’s approval. This evaluation process can be a difficult task because of time restriction, lack of information in the submittal package, and lack of defined criteria for evaluation. This study thus introduces an automated decision support for submittal evaluation that uses the Multi-Attribute Utility Theory (MAUT) to evaluate a submittal considering its impact on the construction and operation of the building. First, key building submittals are analyzed and the top one (chiller) is selected and its evaluation parameters grouped into two categories: non-flexible and flexible. The non-flexible parameters have been dealt with as a checklist with predefined thresholds that must be met without tolerance. Flexible parameters, on the other hand, have been analyzed using utility values that represent decision makers’ preferences and tolerance levels. Accordingly, the evaluation process determines the overall utility for the submittal and the value-based condition for accepting it. An automated prototype system has been developed using data provided by three organizations through intensive interviews with experts. A case study was then used to prove that the proposed evaluation system provides consistent and objective decisions, internal alignment of organizational values, and improved lifecycle performance of submittal items.

summary Bricks have been used in the construction industry as a building medium for millennia. Distinct patterns of bricks depict the unique aesthetic intentions found in Roman, Gothic and Islamic architecture. In contemporary practice, the use of digital tools in design has enabled methodologies for creating new forms in architecture. CAD and BIM systems provide new opportunities for designers to create parametric objects for building form generation. In masonry design, there exists an inherent contradiction between traditional patterns in brick design, which are formal and prescribed, and the potential for new patterns generated using design scripting. In addition, current tools do not provide interactive techniques for the design of brickwork patterns that can manage constant changes parametrically, to inform and influence design process, by providing design feedback on the constructive and structural aspects of the proposed brick pattern and geometry. This research looks into the parametric techniques that can be applied to create different kinds of patterns on brick walls. It discusses a methodology for an interactive brickwork design within generative techniques. By integrating data between two computational platforms – the first based on image analysis and the second on parametric modeling, we demonstrate a methodology and application that can generate interactive arbitrary patterns and map it to the brick wall in real-time.

summary The last decade have seen substantial calls and increasing pressure for developing an integrated design teaching framework, where sustainability is an imperative priority. This paper focuses on presenting a taxonomy of the main challenges encountered within the educational domain, in the attempt to reach an effective integration. The paper also presents a set guidelines to address and try to resolve the noted challenges. As the use of Building Performance Simulation (BPS) applications is a central approach in this process aiming to reach energy efficient buildings, the paper focuses on the shortcomings noted as a result of the use of these applications in the design studios, with particular emphasis on the thermal and lighting aspects of the simulation. The taxonomy presented is a summary of the findings from literature review, as well as the surveys results which were part of the author's research project discussed in the paper.

summary This paper seeks to further the state-of-the-art knowledge on what a smart city is; by analysing the smart cities across the world. It also seeks to find out how different approaches to the smart city creation influence the city. This worked based on the ongoing review on Smart Cities that was started in 2014. In particular, it is structured as follows. First, definition of "smart city" are reviewed, next typologies of smart cities were generated by analysing the different types of smart cities across the world. Following this, case studies are reported. Case studies are followed by a reflection. Paper drawn to conclusion following this section by giving research directions to take this research further.

title Machine learning in the discipline of architecture: A review on the research trends between 2014 and 2020

summary Abstract Through the recent technological developments within the fourth industrial revolution, artificial intelligence (AI) studies have had a huge impact on various disciplines such as social sciences, information communication technologies (ICTs), architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC). Regarding decision-making and forecasting systems in particular, AI and machine learning (ML) technologies have provided an opportunity to improve the mutual relationships between machines and humans. When the connection between ML and architecture is considered, it is possible to claim that there is no parallel acceleration as in other disciplines. In this study, and considering the latest breakthroughs, we focus on revealing what ML and architecture have in common. Our focal point is to reveal common points by classifying and analyzing current literature through describing the potential of ML in architecture. Studies conducted using ML techniques and subsets of AI technologies were used in this paper, and the resulting data were interpreted using the bibliometric analysis method. In order to discuss the state-of-the-art research articles which have been published between 2014 and 2020, main subjects, subsets, and keywords were refined through the search engines. The statistical figures were demonstrated as huge datasets, and the results were clearly delineated through Sankey diagrams. Thanks to bibliometric analyses of the current literature of WOS (Web of Science), CUMINCAD (Cumulative Index about publications in Computer Aided Architectural Design supported by the sibling associations ACADIA, CAADRIA, eCAADe, SIGraDi, ASCAAD, and CAAD futures), predictable data have been presented allowing recommendations for possible future studies for researchers.

summary This paper is the culmination of the first phase of research in the development of adaptive surface conditions which can mitigate extreme climatic scenarios, specifically air pollution. How can the discipline of architecture address worst-case climate scenarios within inhabitable structures? The question asked throughout this case study and research project was essentially based on a critique of the architectural community’s utilization of sustainable technologies in design, and whether current design initiatives were in fact aggressive enough in their approach to “green” building. While assessing the probable environmental changes likely to affect the architectural discipline in the future, this research project developed computational simulations of polluted atmospheres in order to develop surfaces which would respond formally.

title The Relationship between the Governmental and Syntactic Cores: The case of Tripoli, Libya

summary This study examines the relationships between the governmental cores composed of the governor's palace and the buildings of ministries, and the syntactic cores composed of the most integrated spaces defined using the ‘Space Syntax’ techniques, over three historical phases of Tripoli, Libya: the early, colonial, and postcolonial phases. Tripoli was chosen for the study because each of its historical phases was distinguished by different political, social, and/or cultural systems. The early phase represented the Islamic systems; the colonial phase represented the Italian and British systems; and the post-colonial phase represented the regional-modern systems. The study looked at the relationships between the governmental cores and the syntactic cores of the city by overlapping the public/governmental buildings with the syntactic structures of the axial maps of six morphological frames (or maps) representing six morphological periods – two frames for each historical phase of the city. In the study, a close relationship between the governmental and syntactic cores was observed. During the early and colonial phases, the city had same governmental core but different syntactic cores. In contrast, during the post-colonial phase the city had different but overlapping governmental and syntactic cores. The study is important for it helps explain the role of the governmental and syntactic cores in the formation and transformation of the city over time. As a result, the study also helps explain the relationship between functional morphology, which examines the relationship between function and structure, and the spatial morphology, which examines the relationship among the spaces of a structure.

summary OM model for assessment helps to improve teaching practice and student learning in studio courses. A visualization artifact is under development, which addresses need to manage qualitative and quantitative data generated. The aim of present phase is evaluation of different visualization resources. A review of several taxonomies of visualization resources is undertaken. From high-level perspective, design model taxonomy is suitable, as well as mixed methods, related to research by design approach. From low-level taxonomy, evolution of the display modes used in successive prototypes, from Cartesian structure diagrams to radial structure diagrams are analyzed, through iterations of heuristic evaluation.

summary Several architectural studies tackled the methodologies of teaching the architectural design subject in general and their relation to the use of computer in particular. The trends varied in accordance with the research that is relevant to the subject due to its importance in generating new architectural models, but it didn’t crystallize a theoretical framework that identifies clear and specific vocabularies related to the methodology of teaching the computer-aided architectural design. The current study discusses the importance of this concept in an attempt to explore the particular problem represented by the non-clarity of this methodology in the department of architecture in Mosul University. Therefore, the problem of the research crystallized and its objective and its methodology were identified and this was represented by constructing a theoretical framework which includes several main items. Then the theoretical framework was applied to selected projects of architectural department students in order to manifest the particularity of teaching the computer-aided architectural design. Results showed the distinction of this department as this methodology led to the derivation of different architectural products in accordance with the particular effects using the computer technologies. The results also manifested the change in the architectural design trend that was caused due to the digital intervention in the way of the student's thinking from one hand and the components and the elements of the building from the other hand that the quality of the design can be improved by using the computer and the quantity will be more in shorter time.

summary The conference logo is a bird’s eye view of spiral stairs that join and separate – an homage to the famous double spiral staircase in Graz, a tourist attraction of this city and a must-see for any architecturally minded visitor. Carved out of limestone, the medieval construction of the original is a daring feat of masonry as well as a symbolic gesture. The design speaks of separation and reconciliation: The paths of two people that climb the double spiral stairs separate and then meet again at each platform. The relationship between architectural design and the growing digital repertoire of tools and possibilities seems to undergo similar cycles of attraction and rejection: enthusiasm about digital innovations – whether in Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, Energy Design, Robotic Fabrication, the many Dimensions of BIM or, as right now, in AI and Machine Learning – is typically followed by a certain disillusionment and a realization that the promises were somewhat overblown. But a turn away from these digital innovations can only be temporary. In our call for papers we refer to the first and second ‘digital turns’, a term Mario Carpo coined. Yes, it’s a bit of a pun, but you could indeed see these digital turns in our logo as well. Carpo would probably agree that design and the digital have become inseparably intertwined. While they may be circling in different directions, an innovative rejoinder is always just around the corner. The theme of the conference asked participants to re-consider the relationship between Design and the Digital. The notion of a cycle is already present in the syllable “re”. Indeed, 20 years earlier, in 2003, we held an ECAADE conference in Graz simply under the title “Digital Design” and our re-using – or is it re-cycling? – the theme can be seen as the completion of one of those cycles described above: One level up, we meet again, we’ve come full circle. The question of the relationship between Design and the Digital is still in flux, still worthy of renewed consideration. There is a historical notion implicit in the theme. To reconsider something, one needs to take a step back, to look into the past as well as into the future. Indeed, at this conference we wanted to take a longer view, something not done often enough in the fast-paced world of digital technology. Carefully considering one’s past can be a source of inspiration. In fact, the double spiral stair that inspired our conference logo also inspired many architects through the ages. Konrad Wachsmann, for example, is said to have come up with his famous Grapevine assembly system based on this double spiral stair and its intricate joinery. More recently, Rem Koolhaas deemed the double spiral staircase in Graz important enough to include a detailed model of it in his “elements of architecture” exhibition at the Venice Biennale in 2014. Our interpretation of the stair is a typically digital one, you might say. First of all: it’s a rendering of a virtual model; it only exists inside a computer. Secondly, this virtual model isn’t true to the original. Instead, it does what the digital has made so easy to do: it exaggerates. Where the original has just two spiral stairs that separate and join, our model consists of countless stairs that are joined in this way. We see only a part of the model, but the stairs appear to continue in all directions. The implication is of an endless field of spiral stairs. As the 3D model was generated with a parametric script, it would be very easy to change all parameters of it – including the number of stairs that make it up. Everyone at this conference is familiar with the concept of parametric design: it makes generating models of seemingly endless amounts of connected spiral stairs really easy. Although, of course, if we’re too literal about the term ‘endless’, generating our stair model will eventually crash even the most advanced computers. We know that, too. – That's another truth about the Digital: it makes a promise of infinity, which, in the end, it can’t keep. And even if it could: what’s the point of just adding more of the same: more variations, more options, more possible ways to get lost? Doesn’t the original double spiral staircase contain all those derivatives already? Don’t we know that ‘more’ isn’t necessarily better? In the original double spiral stair the happy end is guaranteed: the lovers’ paths meet at the top as well as when they exit the building. Therefore, the stair is also colloquially known as the Busserlstiege (the kissing stair) or the Versöhnungsstiege (reconciliation stair). In our digitally enhanced version, this outcome is no longer clear: we can choose between multiple directions at each level and we risk losing sight of the one we were with. This is also emblematic of our field of research. eCAADe was founded to promote “good practice and sharing information in relation to the use of computers in research and education in architecture and related professions” (see ecaade.org). That may have seemed a straightforward proposition forty years ago, when the association was founded. A look at the breadth and depth of research topics presented and discussed at this conference (and as a consequence in this book, for which you’re reading the editorial) shows how the field has developed over these forty years. summary The conference logo is a bird’s eye view of spiral stairs that join and separate – an homage to the famous double spiral staircase in Graz, a tourist attraction of this city and a must-see for any architecturally minded visitor. Carved out of limestone, the medieval construction of the original is a daring feat of masonry as well as a symbolic gesture. The design speaks of separation and reconciliation: The paths of two people that climb the double spiral stairs separate and then meet again at each platform. The relationship between architectural design and the growing digital repertoire of tools and possibilities seems to undergo similar cycles of attraction and rejection: enthusiasm about digital innovations – whether in Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, Energy Design, Robotic Fabrication, the many Dimensions of BIM or, as right now, in AI and Machine Learning – is typically followed by a certain disillusionment and a realization that the promises were somewhat overblown. But a turn away from these digital innovations can only be temporary. In our call for papers we refer to the first and second ‘digital turns’, a term Mario Carpo coined. Yes, it’s a bit of a pun, but you could indeed see these digital turns in our logo as well. Carpo would probably agree that design and the digital have become inseparably intertwined. While they may be circling in different directions, an innovative rejoinder is always just around the corner. The theme of the conference asked participants to re-consider the relationship between Design and the Digital. The notion of a cycle is already present in the syllable “re”. Indeed, 20 years earlier, in 2003, we held an ECAADE conference in Graz simply under the title “Digital Design” and our re-using – or is it re-cycling? – the theme can be seen as the completion of one of those cycles described above: One level up, we meet again, we’ve come full circle. The question of the relationship between Design and the Digital is still in flux, still worthy of renewed consideration. There is a historical notion implicit in the theme. To reconsider something, one needs to take a step back, to look into the past as well as into the future. Indeed, at this conference we wanted to take a longer view, something not done often enough in the fast-paced world of digital technology. Carefully considering one’s past can be a source of inspiration. In fact, the double spiral stair that inspired our conference logo also inspired many architects through the ages. Konrad Wachsmann, for example, is said to have come up with his famous Grapevine assembly system based on this double spiral stair and its intricate joinery. More recently, Rem Koolhaas deemed the double spiral staircase in Graz important enough to include a detailed model of it in his “elements of architecture” exhibition at the Venice Biennale in 2014. Our interpretation of the stair is a typically digital one, you might say. First of all: it’s a rendering of a virtual model; it only exists inside a computer. Secondly, this virtual model isn’t true to the original. Instead, it does what the digital has made so easy to do: it exaggerates. Where the original has just two spiral stairs that separate and join, our model consists of countless stairs that are joined in this way. We see only a part of the model, but the stairs appear to continue in all directions. The implication is of an endless field of spiral stairs. As the 3D model was generated with a parametric script, it would be very easy to change all parameters of it – including the number of stairs that make it up. Everyone at this conference is familiar with the concept of parametric design: it makes generating models of seemingly endless amounts of connected spiral stairs really easy. Although, of course, if we’re too literal about the term ‘endless’, generating our stair model will eventually crash even the most advanced computers. We know that, too. – That's another truth about the Digital: it makes a promise of infinity, which, in the end, it can’t keep. And even if it could: what’s the point of just adding more of the same: more variations, more options, more possible ways to get lost? Doesn’t the original double spiral staircase contain all those derivatives already? Don’t we know that ‘more’ isn’t necessarily better? In the original double spiral stair the happy end is guaranteed: the lovers’ paths meet at the top as well as when they exit the building. Therefore, the stair is also colloquially known as the Busserlstiege (the kissing stair) or the Versöhnungsstiege (reconciliation stair). In our digitally enhanced version, this outcome is no longer clear: we can choose between multiple directions at each level and we risk losing sight of the one we were with. This is also emblematic of our field of research. eCAADe was founded to promote “good practice and sharing information in relation to the use of computers in research and education in architecture and related professions” (see ecaade.org). That may have seemed a straightforward proposition forty years ago, when the association was founded. A look at the breadth and depth of research topics presented and discussed at this conference (and as a consequence in this book, for which you’re reading the editorial) shows how the field has developed over these forty years. There are sessions on Digital Design Education, on Digital Fabrication, on Virtual Reality, on Virtual Heritage, on Generative Design and Machine Learning, on Digital Cities, on Simulation and Digital Twins, on BIM, on Sustainability, on Circular Design, on Design Theory and on Digital Design Experimentations. summary Buildings have to respond to changes in order to remain functional. Traditional means to adapt to change are to design relatively static shells that can accommodate to some degree changes. Recently a number of technologies have come into existence that extend the capacity of buildings to change in a more autonomous way. Such buildings are responsive buildings. In this paper we deal with a special case of such responsive buildings: interactive buildings. Interactive buildings engage in a dialogue with the user and have an internal representation of the user. Interactive buildings can display a variety of 'styles' how they interact with people - these are known as attitudes. As a building may go through a number of attitudes during the interaction with the user, control structures are necessary to determine this change. The mechanisms for these changes are the 'psychology' of the building.

summary Behavior, adaptation and responsiveness are characteristics of live organisms; architecture on the other hand is structurally, materially and functionally constructed. With the shift from ‘mechanical’ towards ‘organic’ paradigm (Mae-Wan Ho, 1997) attitude towards architectural adaptation, behavior and performance is shifting as well. This change is altering a system of reference and conceptual basis for architecture by suggesting the integration of dynamics – dynamics that don’t address kinetic movement only but include flows of energies, material and information. This paper presents an ongoing research into kinetic material system with the focus on non-mechanical actuation (shape memory alloy) and the structural and material behavior. It proposes an adaptive surface capable of altering its shape and forming small occupiable spaces that respond to external and internal influences and flows of information. The adaptive structure is developed as a physical and digital prototype. Its behavior is examined at a physical level and the findings are used to digitally simulate the behavior of the larger system. The design approach is driven by an interest in adaptive systems in nature and material variability (structural and functional) of naturally constructed materials. The broader goal of the research is to test the scale at which shape memory alloy can be employed as an actuator of dynamic architectural surfaces and to speculate on and explore the capacity of active and responsive systems to produce adaptable surfaces that can form occupiable spaces and with that, added functionalities in architectural and urban environments.

title The Social Network Learning Cloud: Architectural Education for the 21st Century

summary In less than a decade, architectural education has, in some ways, significantly evolved. The advent of computation has not so much triggered the change, but Social Networks (SN) have ignited a novel way of learning, interaction and knowledge construction. SN enable learners to engage with friends, tutors, professionals and peers, form the base for learning resources, allow students to make their voices heard, to listen to other views and much more. They offer a more authentic, inter-professional and integrated problem based, Just-in-Time (JIT), Just-in-Place (JIP) learning. Online SN work in close association with offline SN to form a blended social learning realm - the Social Network Learning Cloud (SNLC) - that greatly enables and enhances students' learning in a far more influential way than any other learning means, resources or methods do. This paper presents a SNLC for architectural education that provides opportunities for linking the academic Learning Management Systems (LMS) with private or professional SN such that it enhances the learning experience and deepens the knowledge of the students. The paper proposes ways of utilising SNLC in other learning and teaching areas of the curriculum and concludes with directions of how SNLC then may be employed in professional settings.
