summary In order to enable designers to envision the behaviour of pedestrians with reference to specific environments, computational models of crowds and their movement become indispensable tools of evaluation as well as tools of creativity. In this paper, the model under development constitutes a generic model which incorporates ideas about agent-based systems. The simulation program comprises a support system for the designer to place virtual users in a context that bears analogous environmental traits of the area under study. The design problem which is addressed by the implementation deals with public squares for which the programmatic demands involve a broad spectrum of users of diverse idiosyncrasies. Our study attempts to elucidate how the variation in preferences of pedestrian movement which depend on various personal, situational and environmental factors, may influence the current use of a selected public space and underpin qualitative alterations compared to its initial design. The intent of the methodology is not to create a predictive tool of naturalistic human movement but to explore how spatial configuration can be assessed and developed through a simulation model of pedestrian behaviour.

summary Architecture took an evolutionary context over time, where designers were interested in finding pragmatic spontaneous appropriate solutions and met the needs of people in urban and architectural spaces. Whereas, in modern architecture an intense and varied competition happens between architects through various currents of thoughts , schools and movements, however, that creativity was the ultimate goal , and a the same time we find that every architect distinguishes himself individually or collectively through tools of architectural expression and design representation adopting a school of thought, using , for example, the leaves of various sizes and diverse technical drawing tools to accurately show that he can be read by professionals or craftsmen outside the geographical scope to which it belongs .With the rapid technological development which accompanied the digital craft in the contemporary world , The digital craft summed up time, distance and tools , so they gave the concept more appropriate accuracy , as virtualization has become the most effective tool for Architecture To reach the ideal and typical results at the practical level, or pure research. At the level of residential design and on the grounds that housing plays an important role in the government policies and given that housing is a basic unit common to all urban communities on earth , the use of different programs to show its typicality in two dimensions or in the third dimension - for example, using software "AutoCAD " " 3D Max " , " ArchiCAD " ... etc. - gave virtualisation smart, creative and beautiful forms which lead to better understand the used /or to be used residential spaces, and thus the conclusion that the life system of dwelling under design or under study , as can specifically recognize spatial structure in housing design - using digital software applying "Space Syntax" for example - in the shadow of slowly growing digital and creative development with the help of high-speed computers . the morphological structure of the dwelling is considered to be the most important contemporary residential designs Investigation through which the researcher in this area aims to understand the various behavioral relations and social structures within the projected residential area, using Space Syntax techniques. Through the structural morphology of dwellings can be inferred quality networks, levels of connectivity and depth and places of openness or closure within the dwelling under study, or under design. How, then, have intelligently contributed this digital craft to the perception of those spatial fixtures ? The aim of this research is to apply an appropriate program in the field of vernacular residential design and notably Space syntax which relate to the understanding and analysis of spatial structures, and also demonstrate its role at the morphological and spatial structure aspects, and prove how effective it helps to understand the social logic of domestic space through social individual/collective relationships and behaviors projected on the spatial configurations of dwellings. The answer to the issue raised above and at the methodological aspect, the study discussed the application of space syntax techniques on the subject. The findings tend to prove the efficiency by comparing samples of Berber vernacular domestic spaces from the Mzab, the Aures and Kabilya in Algeria, and has also led to ascertain the intelligibility of space syntax techniques in reading the differences between the behaviors in domestic spaces in different areas of the sample through long periods of time .

title Supporting Tools for Early Stages of Architectural Design

summary In architectural design, pencil and paper remain the most frequently used media to create freehand drawings to support early design stages. Digital tools conventionally used by architects lack appropriate functionalities and do not offer friendly interfaces for the early stages of architectural design.These are the bad news.The good news are twofold: a) hardware already available can help freehand designers todigitally express their first ideas; and b) functionality principles present in experimental software combined with appropriate hardware could successfully provide a friendly and intuitive human-computer interaction in the early stages of architectural design.This paper takes special attention to the way architects interact with computers, how input devices constrain possible interactions and how functionalities can be explored through these interactions.The article summarizes basic principles to be considered in the development of an all-in-one software and create a scenario whereby these principles are simulated on a hypothetical software to be used during the early stages of architectural design.

summary The production of Innovative projects is the ultimate goal of architects and the previous research highlighted that certain negotiation, collaboration and communications activities are essential to initiate creativity and produce innovative design products. CAAD systems help the architect in formulating and developing design ideas. Research studies have concentrated on the usability and shortages of these systems, the users' attitude, knowledge and their acceptance of these systems. However, few studies have investigated the relation between the social settings of a design studio and the utilization of CAAD systems. This research explores the link between the social settings and the utilization of CAAD in producing innovative design products. It argues that certain design studio's settings would affect the use of CAAD systems in an innovative way. In 2012, students at college of Architecture, University of Dammam were surveyed to find out how the design studio's settings would support/ hinder the utilization of CAAD systems. The survey results showed that innovative students, who undertake certain design and communication tasks, found that CAAD systems are more useful in producing innovative projects. The study makes recommendations on how to set healthy social interaction conditions in the design studio and initiate innovative behaviour while using CAAD systems during the design process.

summary Innovative design approaches are needed for mass housing implementations. Especially increasing interaction between user and designer is major important in the design decisions of these buildings. For this, it is seriously necessary to benefit from technological advances in computational designs, because digital tools like shape grammar, cellular automata, genetic algorithm, l-systems and agent-based models in this field provide not only to save time and to manage the relationships but also to generate many different alternatives. Accordingly, a digital support tool for designers has been developed by using cellular automata approach and scripts of 3Ds Max software. It produces samples of housing design plans which is generated by cellular automata approach according to the data of users' preferences. In this paper the interface and contributions of the developed model are introduced and discussed.

summary The paper describes the implementation of “immersive simulation studios” at Ball State University and their impact on architectural design education. This implementation is part of our on-going research efforts aimed to expand conventionally available digital design tools by including state-of-the-art virtual reality (VR) technology in design studios. Two consecutive immersive simulation studios were held during the academic year 2013-2014; we tested teaching/learning methodologies for effectively using the VR simulation to support the students in the design of architectural spaces. The results make reference to the learning outcomes from these implementations and the level of satisfaction of students using the tool.

summary This paper aims to discuss the potentials of novel modes of participatory design in relation to the latest developments in Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). The first part of the study involves the extraction of the basic principles from the extraordinary cases of the Medical Faculty Housing by Lucien Kroll (1976) and Cedric Price's Fun Place (1965) in which various forms of ICT-enabled participation were conceived. In the second part, we reframe the existing ICT tools and strategies and elaborate their potentials to support the modes of participation performed in these two cases. As a result, by distilling the created knowledge, we introduce a model of ICT-enabled design participation which exploits a set of collective action tools to support sustainable ways of self-organization and bottom-up design.

summary The increasing complexity in architectural design brought a parallel evolution of tools for shape generation and management. Digital tools which better fulfil this need are the generative design software. The aim of this work is finding and testing real life uses of generative design software beyond academic edges. The specific target is transform a complex surface into a similar surface mostly made of flat panels. As a testing ground it has been chosen the support in construction of complex shapes made with ordinary and well known tools. The combination of software used is Rhinoceros, with its plugin Grasshopper, and a couple of opensource add-on, Lunchbox and Paneling tool. The cases are listed from the simplest to the most complex, and the first four are solved with the automated procedure, the fifth, manually. Based on the cases studied it is possible to confirm that the method is applicable to the majority of the complex surfaces.

summary The collection of visual and physical simulation tools available to a design team constitutes what can be termed the Representational Ecosystem of the design studio. Current digital paradigm does not effectively support design discussions because it is limited to the pictorial-frame and scaled representations. We analyzed for the first time the link between the Interconnected Hybrid Ideation Space (HIS) and the representational ecosystem of a design studio as a case study. The Hybrid Representational Ecosystem is proposed to better achieve a comprehensive and closer view of the design solution because it is fully hybrid (analog/digital), it supports multiple kinds of representations, scales, and co-design. The epistemology and principles of the new paradigm are described.

summary Rethinking Comprehensive Design—the 19th International Conference on Computer-Aided Architectural Design Research in Asia (CAADRIA 2014)—emphasises a cross-disciplinary context to challenge the mainstream culture of computational design in architecture. It aims to (re)explore the potential of computational design methods and technologies in architecture from a holistic perspective. The conference provides an international forum where academics and practitioners share their novel research development and reflection for defining the future of computation in architectural design. Hosted by the Department of Design, Engineering and Management at the Kyoto Institute of Technology, CAADRIA 2014 presents 88 peer-reviewed full papers from all over the world. These high-quality research papers are complimented by 34 short work-in-progress papers submitted for the poster session of the conference. The conference proceedings were produced by a motivated team of volunteers from the CAADRIA community through an extensive collaboration. The 88 full papers rigorously double-blind reviewed by the dedicated International Review Committee (consisting of 74 experts), testify to CAADRIA’s highly respectable international standing. Call for abstracts sent out in July 2013 attracted 298 submissions. They were initially reviewed by the Paper Selection Committee who accepted 198 abstracts for further development. Of these, 118 full papers were eventually submitted in the final stage. Each submitted paper was then assessed by at least two members of the International Review Committee. Following the reviewers’ recommendations, 91 papers were accepted by the conference, of which 88 are included in this volume and for presentation in CAADRIA 2014. summary The general scope of this paper is to present the development of an approach for the generation of possible space layouts in the early stages of design. The approach sets out to bridge the gap between the free form brainstorming of the sketching designer and the deterministic parametric model of the computational designer. A new responsive design tool is developed; applying physical based modelling techniques to a computational environment. Springs and particles automates the initial placement and sizing of the spaces, and allows continuous user and software interaction. Keeping the design process alive, through springs that connects everything to everything and allows topology to change, opposed to the strict hierarchy and constraints of traditional parametric design. summary During the early stages of the architectural design process, students and architects seek information for inspiration, and to evaluate design ideas or similar solutions. An essential part of design education therefore involves building up a knowledge base of already built or designed buildings. Most students gather such information by visiting or researching building designs, for example through photos taken on design studio field trips. These photos are used for studio work or archived for later use. The “ar:searchbox.app” aims to support this in two ways. Firstly, by supporting easy mobile information acquisition and sharing, as well as the semi-automatic derivation of high quality metadata; and secondly, by employing urban environment sensitive search and similarity-based browsing strategies to support mobile education as well as a web-based access to the information. To provide long-term access and to establish an information base that is not restricted to a single design studio, the “ar:searchbox.app” builds on our previous “ar:searchbox” project which uses a central media server called “mediaTUM” that provides a handling concept for flexible metadata schemas and scalable infrastructures.

summary In recent years, Building Information Models have become commonplace in building profession. The extensive use and increasing experience with BIM models offers new perspectives and potentials for design and planning. A recent stakeholder study conducted by the authors of this paper show that in practice models are no longer solely observed as culmination of knowledge in a 3d representation of future built structures, but as a source of information in itself. Experienced users of BIM want to Find Information within a model or across a set of these and Compare models in order to evaluate states of a model, differences in separate models or models from different point of time. Current BIM tools support both modes only in a rudimentary form. This paper discusses current modes of information query within and across BIM models, shows beneficial scenarios for building and planning practice through customised queries and exemplifies these on the base of a scripted tool. This customized approach is used to test approaches for a machine-based assessment of Level of detail and BIM-readiness in BIM models.

summary Creativity is an important factor for innovators. According to Eguchi and Pinheiro (2008) the basis of design is innovation because of the use creative methodology. It’s important to remember that the word “project” comes from the Latin “proyectus”, meaning “a forward throwing action”. According to Ramos (2006), “educating for creativity is essential.” Beetlestone (2000), De Bono (1993), Munari (1997) and Pawlak (2000) argue that as we’re children we’re curious to find answers to everything, but that traditional schooling brakes the creativity. This research is a methodological test which aims to identify the reasons for student’s selection of specific creative tools used in university projects.

summary Increasing use of BIM has represented a continuing shift in traditional assumptions on how we navigate the design process. BIM is affording the student the ability to gain a greater understanding of their design ideas via the exploration of scale, spatial organisation and structure, amongst many other design layers, in increasing levels of detail, at the same point in the design process. Architectural education is at a delayed tipping point where architectural students are increasingly looking towards BIM to streamline their design process drawn by the production of realistic visualisation, but with a lack of knowledge and skill in its application. With a lack of guidance and understanding around the application of BIM, the use of BIM in this manner overlooks the potential of BIM to construct and test virtual simulations of proposed schemes, to support design enquiry. A historical concern for the pedagogy constructed around the students’ design process is the application of methods and techniques that support the progression through the design process, (Ambrose, 2014; dash mei & Safari, 2018). This study examines the design process of architectural students and the interaction between analogue and digital methods used in design. These primary modes of communication, offer the opportunity to query the roles and rules of traditional architectural conventions around ‘problem finding’ and ‘problem solving’, challenging the ‘traditional’ design process examined by pioneers like Bruner (1966) and Schon (1987). These approaches are distilled from the findings of the study and presented as guidance to those teaching in architectural aBIMemia to align pedagogic goals to methods of abstraction in this new era of design education reconsidering digital methods in design.

summary Sketching by hand is without doubt – alongside building models – the most common tool that architects employ when designing. A disadvantage of the sketch is, even if it is a perspective drawing, that it is a purely two-dimensional planar representation of a three-dimensional product: the three-dimensional impression that the sketch communicates is a product of the viewer’s imagination. Digital modelling tools on the other hand support the creation of three-dimensional content but fall short in their ease of handling: their complexity and potentially unintuitive operation hinder rather than support the design process. Taking this discrepancy as a starting point, the presented system details the development and prototypical implementation of a dynamic 3D-sketching tool. The underlying core idea is to create a seamless connection between a perspective hand-sketch and the corresponding digital 3D-model in order to benefit from the advantages of hand sketching as a design tool and computer maintained 3D models. The system allows the designer to work as usual, visualizing his or her thoughts using perspective sketches. The user sketches on a touchscreen surface. The 2D drawing is automatically interpreted and converted into a system of 3D lines, surfaces and volumes in real-time.

summary To ensure compliance with specifications during construction, a formal review process, called the submittals process, is typically used whereby a contractor submits proposals for materials, equipment, and processes for owner’s approval. This evaluation process can be a difficult task because of time restriction, lack of information in the submittal package, and lack of defined criteria for evaluation. This study thus introduces an automated decision support for submittal evaluation that uses the Multi-Attribute Utility Theory (MAUT) to evaluate a submittal considering its impact on the construction and operation of the building. First, key building submittals are analyzed and the top one (chiller) is selected and its evaluation parameters grouped into two categories: non-flexible and flexible. The non-flexible parameters have been dealt with as a checklist with predefined thresholds that must be met without tolerance. Flexible parameters, on the other hand, have been analyzed using utility values that represent decision makers’ preferences and tolerance levels. Accordingly, the evaluation process determines the overall utility for the submittal and the value-based condition for accepting it. An automated prototype system has been developed using data provided by three organizations through intensive interviews with experts. A case study was then used to prove that the proposed evaluation system provides consistent and objective decisions, internal alignment of organizational values, and improved lifecycle performance of submittal items.

summary Este artigo apresenta a experiencia de utilizaç?o de tr?s ferramentas de simulaç?o de vento: Flow Design, ODS-Studio e um mini túnel de vento. O objetivo foi avaliar as vantagens e desvantagens de incorpora-las nas fases iniciais de projeto. Como tal, foram simulados tr?s cenários urbanos e os resultados obtidos foram posteriormente comparados com as simulaç?es efetuadas por Sousa (2014) com o programa CFD Phoenics. Como resultado o Flow Design é o mais intuitivo, mas menos preciso nos resultados. O ODS-studio é mais complexo para manipular e o mini túnel de vento o mais apropriado para analise de pontos especificos.
