summary This paper presents a research on GIS to organize the available data from infrastructure and facilities in a University campus. It integrates and compiles a range of data under ontology that will permit the enhancement of geographic database regarding monitoring and control systems. The team worked with campus administration using desktop hardware and software to consolidate information about water, sewage, energy and other networks at backbone scale. The boundaries of buildings, parking, streets and land use were also included. The geographic features and tables assigned are intended to work under WebGIS, mobile device, participative platforms, BIM structures and 3D simulation.

summary We describe research exploring and demonstrating the use of large-scale data gathering and processing to inform the activities of architectural and urban designers. We apply this research to public spaces in urban housing estates. The aim is to understand the current use patterns and usability of these spaces, and to adaptively redesign them according to the insights gained from these findings. Another aim of the research is to obtain scientific knowledge regarding the production and use of user-data-based design support systems which promote and enhance the capability of (digital) design aids, such as building- and urban-scale models, to act as ‘learning devices’ giving designers better insights to the nature of the design situations they are asked to address, as well as insights on design space definition and exploration. We adopt a multimodal data collection strategy, consisting of participatory workshops for residents and users, person-based crowdsourcing, location-based crowd sensing, and statistical demographics data.

summary Building performance simulation tools have indeed eased the task of evaluating a building’s performance from the point of view of lighting design, heating and cooling loads, total energy loads, acoustic properties, natural lighting, ventilation, smoke and fire containment etc. However, to use these tools correctly, not only is theoretical knowledge required but also insight that can only be attained after substantial experience. For example, in order to evaluate the thermal performance alone, one needs to understand climatology, material properties, building physics, HVAC systems, internal and external gain factors, solar impacts, etc. to name a few. Hence, teaching students of Architecture how to use these tools, and also to interpret the results properly, is a tall order. This paper reports on insights gained through teaching courses on building performance simulations to graduate students in the Department of Architecture. The course content was varied each term and a different simulation software was used; namely: ECOTECT, Energy Plus and Design Builder. Data presented here will also contain feedback from the course students regarding the modelling process of the buildings, inputting the data, simulating their performance, and evaluating the results. Also, the difficulties faced during the various steps as well as the drawbacks of the tools will be discussed in depth.

summary This paper proposes two methods for the development of graphical representations with interactivity and motion and describes research done with some architecture students from a school in Brazil to first investigate the possibility of using the proposed representations. Data from this study indicate the possibility of the introduction, regarding the use and manipulation by the students of the two types of representation proposed for visual analysis of academic architectural projects.

summary Regarding interior building topology as an important aspect in building design and management, several approaches to indoor point cloud structuring have been introduced recently. Apart from a high-level semantic segmentation of the formerly unstructured point clouds into stories and rooms, these methods additionally allow the extraction of attributed graphs in which nodes represent rooms (including room properties like area or height), and edges represent connections between rooms (doors or staircases) or indicate neighborhood relationships (separation by walls). In this paper, we investigate possible applications of these approaches in architectural design and building management and comment on the possible benefits for the building profession. While contemporary practice of spatial arrangement is predominantly based on the manual iteration of spatial topologies, we show that the segmentation of buildings in spaces along with the untraditional more abstract graph-based representations can be used for design, management and navigation within building structures.

summary This paper presents a system that allows immersive visualizations to become a natural and integrated part of the current building design process. It is realized through three main components: (1) the Oculus Rift - a new type of Head Mounted Display (HMD) directed at the consumer market, (2) a real-time rendering engine supporting large Building Information Models (BIM) that is, (3) implemented as a plug-in in a BIM authoring software. In addition to provide details regarding the implementation and integration of the different components in our system, we present an evaluation of it from three different perspectives; rendering performance, navigation interface and the ability to support fast design iterations.

summary Technological innovation has been an important driving force in architecture, enabling and inspiring architects and engineers by giving them new tools for solving existing problems. In the last two decades, the exploration of digital design and fabrication technologies has stimulated the development of a variety of interests and strategies to materialize increasingly complex and customized solutions in architecture, with traditional building materials. Reinforced concrete is the most widely used material in the building industry today and throughout its history has been the subject of vast research into its performance as a construction material and its tectonic potential in architecture. As such, the introduction of digital fabrication processes in concrete construction represents the biggest prospect for renovation of our built environment and at the same time, presents particular difficulties and opportunities, which are now being addressed. In an effort to investigate the alternative design and material possibilities in concrete emerging from the use of digital fabrication technologies in architecture, this paper proposes a focused view of digital fabrication applied to concrete construction with two areas of research. By framing the research in the context of reference works in concrete architecture of the 20th century, this paper describes and illustrates taxonomy of existing and possible types of integration of digital fabrication technologies in concrete architecture in the realms of Practice and Research.This characterization allows the authors to frame the relation between material, technology and architecture in different environments regarding the same material, extracting a clear image of existing processes, their potential and shortcomings, as well as expectations for future developments.

summary Collective Design seeks to explore how new forms of Collective Intelligence, arising from the web, allows mass participation in design. Regarding design we have a wellestablished grounding for understanding how design works through the use of representations. Likewise, collective intelligence via certain crowdsourcing examples has demonstrated that a diverse crowd can trump ability groups, when the conditions are right. In the literature, crowdsourcing is the leading lens bridging design with collective intelligence. However in crowdsourcing design there is less focus on the role of shared representations, subsequently any collective diversity is mitigated by the models that govern the extraction of this intelligence. We propose that more effective design in collective intelligence lies in the crowd’s ability to generate meaningful contributions via the content of shared representations. In order to investigate this, the current paper examines data collected from a pilot study in which a representationally rich online collaborative presentation tool is used to provide a shared design space. The analysis presented applies our previously established semiotic framework to identify potential patterns in the meaningful communication of image based design information.

summary The use of generative systems has been widely investigated in the architectural design process through different procedures and levels of autonomy to generate form.The digression from abstract pre- existing notions of vocabulary and rules – even when resulting in emergent forms – to address complex real- world contexts is yet a challenging undertaking.This paper explores incorporating context in the process of designing using generative systems from ideation to fabrication, and explores the relationship between the emergent nature of generative design and the situated act of designing while using generative design tools.A course offered for 3rd year architecture students at the Department of Architecture, Ain Shams University, Egypt, was designed for this purpose. 110 students employed systems including shape grammars, L- systems, fractals and cellular automata, to design and fabricate 8 group projects.A discussion around emergence and situatedness is presented, with special attention to the designing process from ideation to fabrication.

summary This paper presents part of a broader research project in which a set of complementary computational techniques have been applied to investigate and interpret traditional Chinese architecture. The techniques involve digital modelling, algorithmic representation and digital fabrication. The ancient rule books that describe the traditional Chinese design styles and construction technologies are the basis for the parametric rules and algorithms and the application to the modelling and fabrication process. The focus of this paper is the study of a typical Chinese joint structure, the dou gong. The precedent case study and the components of the dou gong are reviewed and analysed. Then the digital representation and fabrication processes that have been employed are demonstrated. Practical problems were found in this process and modifications were consequently made. At the end of the paper, we discuss the achievements and benefits that arise from this investigation, and potential applications in practice. Conclusions from work presented in this paper and for the broader research are drawn respectively. Significant prospective work is suggested.

summary The methodology presented here is grounded on the reconstruction of the urban body as a network configuration consisting of material and non-material components (Bateson, 1972). It is based on the assumption that if one can describe the rules that define the nodes and the connections of the network construction/urban body, as well as their attributes, then the differentiation on the relationships between elements, or even a shift from one value to another, would result in different network constructions, that would produce a time-based sequence of the self-adaptational and self-organizational reconfigurations occurring during the mutational procedure. The urban body is defined as the part of the urban tissue which distinguishes itself from the whole of the urban landscape, either because of constructed boundaries, or because of the strengthening of a specific attribute, which would result in a kind of an immaterial boundary, or, in other words the formation of an identity.

summary There has been a shift in aesthetics from the modern orthogonal building envelope to more elaborate curved and folded forms. Non_orthogonal forms are often associated with complete freedom of geometry, entrusting the advancement in custom manufacturing and robotic fabrication of one-off building parts to realise the design. This paper presents a methodology that allows non_orthogonal surfaces to be designed using a constrained library of discrete, tessellating parts. The method enables the designer both to produce ‘approximations’ of freeform designs in a top_down manner or to generate ‘candidate’ designs in a bottom_up process. It addresses the challenge in the field of design engineering to generate architectural surfaces which are complex, yet simple and economical to construct. The system relates to the notion that complexity derives from simple parts and simple rules of interaction. Here complexity relates to the holistic understanding of a structure as an interaction between its local parts, global form and visual, as well as functional performance.

summary The paper presents an undergoing research that aims at developing a system, which will allow customer participation in a design of mass-customized houses. The system will allow customers to self-configure a house in a preferred way in relation to the site where it is going to be constructed and with a respect to the prescribed architectural rules. Introducing customer participation in the design process of mass-customized houses allows users to find out individual design goals transforming the design process from being ill-defined into goal-oriented. The proposed system for customer participation could become feasible alternative to the traditional process of provisioning affordable houses improving the living quality in these market areas where architectural knowledge is unaffordable and missing.

summary Increasing use of BIM has represented a continuing shift in traditional assumptions on how we navigate the design process. BIM is affording the student the ability to gain a greater understanding of their design ideas via the exploration of scale, spatial organisation and structure, amongst many other design layers, in increasing levels of detail, at the same point in the design process. Architectural education is at a delayed tipping point where architectural students are increasingly looking towards BIM to streamline their design process drawn by the production of realistic visualisation, but with a lack of knowledge and skill in its application. With a lack of guidance and understanding around the application of BIM, the use of BIM in this manner overlooks the potential of BIM to construct and test virtual simulations of proposed schemes, to support design enquiry. A historical concern for the pedagogy constructed around the students’ design process is the application of methods and techniques that support the progression through the design process, (Ambrose, 2014; dash mei & Safari, 2018). This study examines the design process of architectural students and the interaction between analogue and digital methods used in design. These primary modes of communication, offer the opportunity to query the roles and rules of traditional architectural conventions around ‘problem finding’ and ‘problem solving’, challenging the ‘traditional’ design process examined by pioneers like Bruner (1966) and Schon (1987). These approaches are distilled from the findings of the study and presented as guidance to those teaching in architectural aBIMemia to align pedagogic goals to methods of abstraction in this new era of design education reconsidering digital methods in design.

summary In an increasingly technological, informed and demanding society Architecture should be able to answer to its space requirements using materials and technological resources that today has at its service. Kinetic systems have been used by architects as an approach that embeds computation intelligence to create flexible and adaptable architectural spaces according to users’ changing needs and desires. This paper describes one possible way of exploring kinetic systems to develop a foldable surface with geometric patterns based on the rules of rigid origami. This surface aims to take advantage of the elastic capacities given to a planar material by its folding. After folding the surface can assume different forms in order to create a range of spatial configurations ordered by a user through a remote control.

summary Cellular automata (CA) is a well-known computation method introduced by John von Neumann and Stanislaw Ulam in the 1940s. Since then, it has been studied in various fields such as computer science, biology, physics, chemistry, and art. The Classic CA algorithm is a calculation of a grid of cells' binary states based on neighboring cells and a set of rules. With the variation of these parameters, the CA algorithm has evolved into alternative versions such as 3D CA, Multiple neighborhood CA, Multiple rules CA, and Stochastic CA (Url-1). As a rule-based generative algorithm, CA has been used as a bottom-up design approach in the architectural design process in the search for form (Frazer,1995; Dinçer et al., 2014), in simulating the displacement of individuals in space, and in revealing complex relations at the urban scale (Güzelci, 2013). There are implementations of CA tools in 3D design software for designers as additional scripts or plug-ins. However, these often have limited ability to create customized CA algorithms by the designer. This study aims to create a customizable framework for 3D CA algorithms to be used in 3D form explorations by designers. Grasshopper3D, which is a visual scripting environment in Rhinoceros 3D, is used to implement the framework. The main difference between this work and the current Grasshopper3D plug-ins for CA simulation is the customizability and the real-time control of the framework. The parameters that allow the CA algorithm to be customized are; the initial state of the 3D grid, neighborhood conditions, cell states and rules. CA algorithms are created for each customizable parameter using the framework. Those algorithms are evaluated based on the ability to generate form. A voxel-based approach is used to generate geometry from the points created by the 3D cellular automata. In future, forms generated using this framework can be used as a form generating tool for digital environments.

summary Although 3D modeling has become standard within archaeology, the process of digitally reconstructing archaeological objects requires clumsy and time-consuming procedures. Typically, these procedures call for careful collaboration, between architectural historians, archaeologists and computer modelers, to produce scientifically correct and artistically pleasing models. This paper proposes the use of shape grammars for digital reconstruction of the archaeological heritage artifacts that were discovered during surveys along the coast of Turkey. Concentrating on ceramic vessels, the archaeologists and divers classified the artifacts based on their dimensions and observations. The classifications are used to infer the rules that will generate the digital model for each artifact. Rhinoceros modeling software with Grasshopper plug-in was used to generate 3D models. The goal of this work is to demonstrate that knowledge generated within a virtual world experience, can inform the evaluation of data derived from textual and archaeological sources, and vice versa.

summary Despite reservations for the rule-based perspective of design with regards to creativity, the role and the potential of rules is instrumental in reflective design thinking. Rules enable sensible and functional conversations about the process. Working with (and mastering) a small rule set is common amongst artists as well. Escher developed rules based on the shape combinations in Majolica tiles to investigate regular plane divisions in his own work. Dwelling on a rule set allows for explorations in a rich design space that result in new series of works. Escher’s published sketches show that throughout his artworks, keenness in seeing shape relations and an ability in manipulating simple shape rules leads to numerous artworks from the same tessellations. Through a visual and rule-based analysis of artistic tiling in Escher’s work, the paper provides a computational perspective on analytical methods for design.

summary Location-based mobile applications have been a rising theme for academics in the field of urbanism and in urban and transportation, because of the potential of transformation they might bring to the urban landscape (De Souza e Silva, 2013). One of the possibilities we study here is to observe social encounters fostered by commuting rides. In this paper, we try to examine the practice from the broad perspective of estimating the environmental benefits, in a context where digital information technology is wielded to address problems old and new (Townsend, 2014). This paper aims to analyze the potential of transformations that new ICTs bring to urban mobility, using as case study the official ridesharing system of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, the Carona? project. The system was developed focusing on the reduction of the number of motorized trips to the University, as well as the amount of CO2 generated by them. Here we analyze the dynamics of ridesharing, using the system data, and also try to observe the role it may play towards the promotion of integration in the UFRJ community.

summary This paper describes a database to catalog buildings designed and constructed by foreign architects that helped shape Rio de Janeiro in the 20th century. The website is in its preliminary stages, just after data collection, and the data structure and interface focus on further expanding possibilities for recording and showing the relationships among records, apart from records themselves. From the experience with the project, the paper also aims to discuss databases, in particular those representing cultural objects, as expressive forms, and some of their expressive mechanisms.
