summary Governments in Australia are faced with policy implementation that mandates higher energy efficient housing (Foran, Lenzen & Dey 2005). To this effect, the National Construction Code (NCC) 2013 stipulates the minimum energy performance for residential buildings as 114MJ/m2 per annum or 6 stars on an energy rating scale. Compliance with this minimum is mandatory but there are several methods through which residential buildings can be rated to comply with the deemed to satisfy provisions outlined in the NCC. FirstRate5 is by far the most commonly used simulation software used in Victoria, Australia. Meanwhile, Building Information Modelling (BIM), using software such as ArchiCAD has gained a foothold in the industry. The energy simulation software within ArchiCAD, EcoDesigner, enables the reporting on the energy performance based on BIM elements that contain thermal information. This research is founded on a comparative study between FirstRate5 and EcoDesigner. Three building types were analysed and compared. The comparison finds significant differences between simulations, being, measured areas, thermal loads and potentially serious shortcomings within FirstRate5, that are discussed along with the future potential of a fully BIM-integrated model for energy rating certification in Victoria.

summary Architecture took an evolutionary context over time, where designers were interested in finding pragmatic spontaneous appropriate solutions and met the needs of people in urban and architectural spaces. Whereas, in modern architecture an intense and varied competition happens between architects through various currents of thoughts , schools and movements, however, that creativity was the ultimate goal , and a the same time we find that every architect distinguishes himself individually or collectively through tools of architectural expression and design representation adopting a school of thought, using , for example, the leaves of various sizes and diverse technical drawing tools to accurately show that he can be read by professionals or craftsmen outside the geographical scope to which it belongs .With the rapid technological development which accompanied the digital craft in the contemporary world , The digital craft summed up time, distance and tools , so they gave the concept more appropriate accuracy , as virtualization has become the most effective tool for Architecture To reach the ideal and typical results at the practical level, or pure research. At the level of residential design and on the grounds that housing plays an important role in the government policies and given that housing is a basic unit common to all urban communities on earth , the use of different programs to show its typicality in two dimensions or in the third dimension - for example, using software "AutoCAD " " 3D Max " , " ArchiCAD " ... etc. - gave virtualisation smart, creative and beautiful forms which lead to better understand the used /or to be used residential spaces, and thus the conclusion that the life system of dwelling under design or under study , as can specifically recognize spatial structure in housing design - using digital software applying "Space Syntax" for example - in the shadow of slowly growing digital and creative development with the help of high-speed computers . the morphological structure of the dwelling is considered to be the most important contemporary residential designs Investigation through which the researcher in this area aims to understand the various behavioral relations and social structures within the projected residential area, using Space Syntax techniques. Through the structural morphology of dwellings can be inferred quality networks, levels of connectivity and depth and places of openness or closure within the dwelling under study, or under design. How, then, have intelligently contributed this digital craft to the perception of those spatial fixtures ? The aim of this research is to apply an appropriate program in the field of vernacular residential design and notably Space syntax which relate to the understanding and analysis of spatial structures, and also demonstrate its role at the morphological and spatial structure aspects, and prove how effective it helps to understand the social logic of domestic space through social individual/collective relationships and behaviors projected on the spatial configurations of dwellings. The answer to the issue raised above and at the methodological aspect, the study discussed the application of space syntax techniques on the subject. The findings tend to prove the efficiency by comparing samples of Berber vernacular domestic spaces from the Mzab, the Aures and Kabilya in Algeria, and has also led to ascertain the intelligibility of space syntax techniques in reading the differences between the behaviors in domestic spaces in different areas of the sample through long periods of time .

summary Desertification has made large productive landscapes in the South-west Thar desert redundant, subjected people to migration and induced a constant influx of sand into the region (Singhvi and Amal, 2014). The abundance of sand creates an opportunity to adopt an existing technique, Bio-mineralisation, to develop a sand based composite material which, when treated with a construction binder like sodium alginate, can be used for engineering purposes. The paper sets a theoretical framework to develop a fabrication mechanism with microbial-grout injections and propose the development of in-dune/underground assembly of habitable spaces. Each of the sub-components of material system, fabrication mechanism and In-dune structures are detailed, and evaluated to devise a hierarchy between them. Their interdependencies together inform design strategies, a phasing plan and global time scale for overall terrain transformation.

summary The Building and Construction Authority (BCA) of Singapore established Sustainable Construction Master Plan with the goal of achieving a Sustainable Singapore Blueprint. The Concrete Usage Index (CUI) is a part of Sustainable Construction scoring under Singapore’s ‘Green Mark’ system. Since computation of CUI score was formerly calculated manually without the use of BIM software, it was an inaccurate and tedious process. Although calculation of CUI is currently much faster through the use of BIM software, it still faces challenges. The objective of this project is to address those challenges by creating a BIM addon tool which is capable of automating the process of CUI calculation with minimum user input. Our intention is to help the industry to calculate CUI systematically and efficiently while promoting the adoption of BIM.

summary Mesh-Mould is a novel robotic fabrication system for complex, non-standard concrete structures. The system folds together formwork and reinforcement, the two most labour intensive aspects of concrete constructions and offers an alternative approach to the current modes of prefabrication by suggesting an in-situ fabrication process (Figure 1). The paper outlines the development of the Form-work/Reinforcing Meshes through several iterations of physical and digital tests. Initially starting from simple triangulated 3D lattices, the structures evolved to become more complex and differentiated. The incorporating of flow enhancing ducts and surface perimeters with diverse surface aperture densities facilitates an optimal concrete flow and material distribution within the mesh.

summary The concept of “families” lies in the core of internal data structure in Building Information Modeling (BIM). The elements of this modeling platform are all associated with each other as parts of the “families”, independent of their geometrical structure, materiality, parametric dependencies or their physical connection to other elements. Through the associations introduced among the parameters of the ‘families’ members, this study aims at establishing a methodology for a multi-objective evaluation of the environmental performance of the building as an organism. The methodology is founded on a system of different values and weights attributed to the parameters of the families members which are adjusted and fine-tuned through a series of iterations, thus affecting the overall building performance towards an optimum goal. The performance evaluation method used in the “families” methodology is not limited to the individual assessment of the environmental performance objectives or to an integrated multi-objective weighting mechanism; as an overall evaluation platform it checks and balances the individual characteristics of the system not as static conclusive results but as dynamic criteria intended to guide the overall design and building process. The importance of this paper lies in the construction of a concrete methodological set of tools for the assessment of the environmental performance of the building. It will lead the way in independent research in the field of architectural design and the development of ecological thinking and building in China.

summary Parallel to the early development and recent widespread usage of composite materials in building and manufacturing, the concept of functionally graded materials (FGM) was initiated and developed as far back as the 1980s. In contrast to the composite paradigm, where layers of materials are glued and 'cooked' together under high pressure and temperature to form laminated parts, FGM are singular materials that vary their consistency gradually over their volume. In direct link to their increasing use in fields adjacent to architecture, the scope of the paper is to explore a possible design route for designing with FGM. Of a limited number of available CAD software where material properties can be graded, the intent of the design for a materially graded windbreak module is to utilize particle systems as a technique for simulating fields of interacting, information-loaded material point sets that can be fused together in a gradient manner.

summary This paper presents an interactive fenestration system designed for the principal façade of a prototype sustainable dwelling. The system attains autonomous, responsive and interactive modes of operation, and is able to provide synchronous response to a wide variety of environmental conditions and user needs. The method to address the design of the system was to integrate electro-active materials and real time sensing and control technologies. The test was to implement a full-scale façade with the abovementioned capabilities. This presentation discusses the features, technologies and reasoning followed in the design and implementation of the façade.

summary This paper explores the application of cellular automata as method for investigating the dynamic parameters and interrelationships that constitute the urban space. With increasing aspects needed for integration during the architectural and urban design process with the relations between these aspects growing in parallel, complexity of the design process and design solution increases. Additionally, aspects and relations are of a transformative character in that they change over time and therefore construct a time-based condition for which problems are presented and solutions are sought. An architectural methodological response to this situation is presented through the development of a conceptual computational design system that allows these dynamics to unfold and to be observed for architectural design decision taking. Reflecting on the development and implementation of a cellular automata based design approach on a master level urban design studio this paper will discuss the strategies for dealing with complexity at an urban scale as well as the pedagogical considerations behind applying computational tools and methods to a urban design education.

summary In order to enable designers to envision the behaviour of pedestrians with reference to specific environments, computational models of crowds and their movement become indispensable tools of evaluation as well as tools of creativity. In this paper, the model under development constitutes a generic model which incorporates ideas about agent-based systems. The simulation program comprises a support system for the designer to place virtual users in a context that bears analogous environmental traits of the area under study. The design problem which is addressed by the implementation deals with public squares for which the programmatic demands involve a broad spectrum of users of diverse idiosyncrasies. Our study attempts to elucidate how the variation in preferences of pedestrian movement which depend on various personal, situational and environmental factors, may influence the current use of a selected public space and underpin qualitative alterations compared to its initial design. The intent of the methodology is not to create a predictive tool of naturalistic human movement but to explore how spatial configuration can be assessed and developed through a simulation model of pedestrian behaviour.

summary Real estate development may benefit from a decision-support software system that is implemented with Building Information Modelling to perform Quadruple Net Value Analysis. Schemes may be created rapidly using BIM and parametric modeling. They may be assessed for economic, social, and environmental factors using spreadsheets and simulation software. They may be assessed for sensory value by using an immersive visualization system. The idea has been tested as a proof of concept in undergraduate and graduate design studios. It appears to be easy to use for students and effective in directing attention to the four factors and obtaining objective measurements.

summary The study of wind conditions in the urban context has multiple application areas such as for cleaning pollution through ventilation, analysing wind pressures on building façades, and improving pedestrian comfort. In this context, the Pneumosense project is a student’s project focused in the design of a kinetic system to ameliorate negative impact of wind conditions in pedestrian areas in the city of Melbourne. Its development considers several stages including site analysis, analogue wind tunnel testing, digital simulations with Computational Fluid Dynamic software, material explorations, kinetic component design with Arduino, and rapid prototyping.

summary This paper demonstrates a preliminary research methodology towards an integrative digital design approach for the analysis, generation and evaluation of architectural proposals in public open spaces based on human movement behaviour performances. In order to achieve this, various computational mechanisms that involve the logic of pedestrian modelling are applied, aiming to be explored in different stages of design. The suggested models follow the idea of 'virtual force' fields, an approach initially introduced in previous work by author. Based on particle behaviour modelling, this approach examines the interaction and movement behaviour of individual entities within a system through virtual effects and specifically through attraction and repulsion forces, influencing pedestrians behaviour and hence their accelerated movement. Current paper argues that the idea of 'virtual force' fields can be used not only for pedestrian simulation but also for the analysis and generation of proposals, aiming on a holistic design development of public spaces.

These ensure cities global eligibility besides their local efficiency and compatibility. This essay suggests a model to create negotiation between these two approaches. The tool is developed as an agent based model in a parametric environment and presented through a hypothetical case study. First, the system structure and behavior is defined and then through direct and indirect control tools, challenge was to achieve suggested design scenario without ignoring the self organizing behavior of agents.

summary Current developments in design-to-production workflows aim to allow architects to quickly prototype designs that result from advanced design processes while also embedding the constraints imposed by selected fabrication equipment. However, the enduring physical separation between design space and fabrication space, together with a continuous approach to both design, via NURBs modeling software, and fabrication, through irreversible material processing methods, limit the possibilities to extend the advantages of a “digital” approach (Ward 2010), such as full editability and reversibility, to physical realizations. In response to such issues, this paper proposes a processto allow the concurrent design and fabrication of discrete structures in a collaborative process between human designer and a 6-axis robotic arm. This requires the development of design and materialization procedures for discrete aggregations, including the modeling of assembly constraints, as well as the establishment of a communication platform between human and machine actors. This intends to offer methods to increase the accessibility of discrete design methodologies, as well as to hint at possibilities for overcoming the division between design and manufacturing (Carpo 2011; Bard et al. 2014), thus allowing intuitive design decisions to be integrated directly within assembly processes (Johns 2014).
