summary The need for increased automation of the AEC sector has been extensively documented within the architectural discipline over recent years. Far beyond economic perspectives, current advances in technology offer an increased and more direct implementation of sustainable materials. Within this research, the potential for the re-use of material with low embodied energy within automated construction will be examined. Herefore, Remote Material Deposition (RDM, firstly described in Dörfler et al., 2014) is utilized as main fabrication method, deploying varying compositions of local building debris, lime mortar, and sand, via a throwing arm. This research explores a method of continuous verification of material deployment and removal of material oversaturation to guarantee accuracy. Herefore, all instances of the robot ecology are in direct communication with one another and the user for verification, adaptation, and information. The proposed framework is examined through experimentation by designing, building, and implementing an inter-communicative network of bespoke semi-autonomous robots with all proposed parts of the system.

summary This article is part of the studies and activities that are being developed in the Support Center for Research in Language Arts in Architecture and City, belonging to the Institute for Architecture and Urbanism, University of São Paulo (N.ELAC / IAU.USP). The main purpose of this research was to discuss the role of traditional media and new digital media of drawing in the projective process and in a construction of the architectural thought. This experimentation performed a very important role in supporting research within the design activities, because of the various possibilities in working the multiple logical thinking in a new cognitive process. This research represents a space for reflection of the process of reframing the act of drawing and in the constitution of a new perception.

summary Architecture took an evolutionary context over time, where designers were interested in finding pragmatic spontaneous appropriate solutions and met the needs of people in urban and architectural spaces. Whereas, in modern architecture an intense and varied competition happens between architects through various currents of thoughts , schools and movements, however, that creativity was the ultimate goal , and a the same time we find that every architect distinguishes himself individually or collectively through tools of architectural expression and design representation adopting a school of thought, using , for example, the leaves of various sizes and diverse technical drawing tools to accurately show that he can be read by professionals or craftsmen outside the geographical scope to which it belongs .With the rapid technological development which accompanied the digital craft in the contemporary world , The digital craft summed up time, distance and tools , so they gave the concept more appropriate accuracy , as virtualization has become the most effective tool for Architecture To reach the ideal and typical results at the practical level, or pure research. At the level of residential design and on the grounds that housing plays an important role in the government policies and given that housing is a basic unit common to all urban communities on earth , the use of different programs to show its typicality in two dimensions or in the third dimension - for example, using software "AutoCAD " " 3D Max " , " ArchiCAD " ... etc. - gave virtualisation smart, creative and beautiful forms which lead to better understand the used /or to be used residential spaces, and thus the conclusion that the life system of dwelling under design or under study , as can specifically recognize spatial structure in housing design - using digital software applying "Space Syntax" for example - in the shadow of slowly growing digital and creative development with the help of high-speed computers . the morphological structure of the dwelling is considered to be the most important contemporary residential designs Investigation through which the researcher in this area aims to understand the various behavioral relations and social structures within the projected residential area, using Space Syntax techniques. Through the structural morphology of dwellings can be inferred quality networks, levels of connectivity and depth and places of openness or closure within the dwelling under study, or under design. How, then, have intelligently contributed this digital craft to the perception of those spatial fixtures ? The aim of this research is to apply an appropriate program in the field of vernacular residential design and notably Space syntax which relate to the understanding and analysis of spatial structures, and also demonstrate its role at the morphological and spatial structure aspects, and prove how effective it helps to understand the social logic of domestic space through social individual/collective relationships and behaviors projected on the spatial configurations of dwellings. The answer to the issue raised above and at the methodological aspect, the study discussed the application of space syntax techniques on the subject. The findings tend to prove the efficiency by comparing samples of Berber vernacular domestic spaces from the Mzab, the Aures and Kabilya in Algeria, and has also led to ascertain the intelligibility of space syntax techniques in reading the differences between the behaviors in domestic spaces in different areas of the sample through long periods of time .

summary Design is one of the basic skills of every engineer. However until now design is only seen as a core course in Architecture studies and lately in Industrial Engineering studies. This paper reports about the development of a design course for all departments of a typical technical university. After a short overview of design teaching tradition, an inventory is presented of the different interpretation of design by the various departments. The course development is presented over two periods: 2012-2014, and 2014-2015. In between a major change was conducted. The course learning goals and student evaluations are presented. In the discussion we reflect on fundamental and practical problems that occur in design teaching for such a wide audience. Finally we draw conclusions on the changing role of design what is needed to give design the same status as mathematics in a technical curriculum.

summary The conference logo is a bird’s eye view of spiral stairs that join and separate – an homage to the famous double spiral staircase in Graz, a tourist attraction of this city and a must-see for any architecturally minded visitor. Carved out of limestone, the medieval construction of the original is a daring feat of masonry as well as a symbolic gesture. The design speaks of separation and reconciliation: The paths of two people that climb the double spiral stairs separate and then meet again at each platform. The relationship between architectural design and the growing digital repertoire of tools and possibilities seems to undergo similar cycles of attraction and rejection: enthusiasm about digital innovations – whether in Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, Energy Design, Robotic Fabrication, the many Dimensions of BIM or, as right now, in AI and Machine Learning – is typically followed by a certain disillusionment and a realization that the promises were somewhat overblown. But a turn away from these digital innovations can only be temporary. In our call for papers we refer to the first and second ‘digital turns’, a term Mario Carpo coined. Yes, it’s a bit of a pun, but you could indeed see these digital turns in our logo as well. Carpo would probably agree that design and the digital have become inseparably intertwined. While they may be circling in different directions, an innovative rejoinder is always just around the corner. The theme of the conference asked participants to re-consider the relationship between Design and the Digital. The notion of a cycle is already present in the syllable “re”. Indeed, 20 years earlier, in 2003, we held an ECAADE conference in Graz simply under the title “Digital Design” and our re-using – or is it re-cycling? – the theme can be seen as the completion of one of those cycles described above: One level up, we meet again, we’ve come full circle. The question of the relationship between Design and the Digital is still in flux, still worthy of renewed consideration. There is a historical notion implicit in the theme. To reconsider something, one needs to take a step back, to look into the past as well as into the future. Indeed, at this conference we wanted to take a longer view, something not done often enough in the fast-paced world of digital technology. Carefully considering one’s past can be a source of inspiration. In fact, the double spiral stair that inspired our conference logo also inspired many architects through the ages. Konrad Wachsmann, for example, is said to have come up with his famous Grapevine assembly system based on this double spiral stair and its intricate joinery. More recently, Rem Koolhaas deemed the double spiral staircase in Graz important enough to include a detailed model of it in his “elements of architecture” exhibition at the Venice Biennale in 2014. Our interpretation of the stair is a typically digital one, you might say. First of all: it’s a rendering of a virtual model; it only exists inside a computer. Secondly, this virtual model isn’t true to the original. Instead, it does what the digital has made so easy to do: it exaggerates. Where the original has just two spiral stairs that separate and join, our model consists of countless stairs that are joined in this way. We see only a part of the model, but the stairs appear to continue in all directions. The implication is of an endless field of spiral stairs. As the 3D model was generated with a parametric script, it would be very easy to change all parameters of it – including the number of stairs that make it up. Everyone at this conference is familiar with the concept of parametric design: it makes generating models of seemingly endless amounts of connected spiral stairs really easy. Although, of course, if we’re too literal about the term ‘endless’, generating our stair model will eventually crash even the most advanced computers. We know that, too. – That's another truth about the Digital: it makes a promise of infinity, which, in the end, it can’t keep. And even if it could: what’s the point of just adding more of the same: more variations, more options, more possible ways to get lost? Doesn’t the original double spiral staircase contain all those derivatives already? Don’t we know that ‘more’ isn’t necessarily better? In the original double spiral stair the happy end is guaranteed: the lovers’ paths meet at the top as well as when they exit the building. Therefore, the stair is also colloquially known as the Busserlstiege (the kissing stair) or the Versöhnungsstiege (reconciliation stair). In our digitally enhanced version, this outcome is no longer clear: we can choose between multiple directions at each level and we risk losing sight of the one we were with. This is also emblematic of our field of research. eCAADe was founded to promote “good practice and sharing information in relation to the use of computers in research and education in architecture and related professions” (see ecaade.org). That may have seemed a straightforward proposition forty years ago, when the association was founded. A look at the breadth and depth of research topics presented and discussed at this conference (and as a consequence in this book, for which you’re reading the editorial) shows how the field has developed over these forty years. There are sessions on Digital Design Education, on Digital Fabrication, on Virtual Reality, on Virtual Heritage, on Generative Design and Machine Learning, on Digital Cities, on Simulation and Digital Twins, on BIM, on Sustainability, on Circular Design, on Design Theory and on Digital Design Experimentations. summary Dan Graham became an important reference in contemporary art developing since the 1960´s a series of works that maintain a profound relation with urban cultural phenomena. This article proposes the analysis of his works produced over the 1970´s and 1980´s which presents the use of technical supports like video, exhibition and surveillance systems and which guided his earlier aesthetic research – related to the “institutional critique” – to the investigations about the power relations between objects, public and the space where they are placed.

title The Relationship between the Governmental and Syntactic Cores: The case of Tripoli, Libya

summary This study examines the relationships between the governmental cores composed of the governor's palace and the buildings of ministries, and the syntactic cores composed of the most integrated spaces defined using the ‘Space Syntax’ techniques, over three historical phases of Tripoli, Libya: the early, colonial, and postcolonial phases. Tripoli was chosen for the study because each of its historical phases was distinguished by different political, social, and/or cultural systems. The early phase represented the Islamic systems; the colonial phase represented the Italian and British systems; and the post-colonial phase represented the regional-modern systems. The study looked at the relationships between the governmental cores and the syntactic cores of the city by overlapping the public/governmental buildings with the syntactic structures of the axial maps of six morphological frames (or maps) representing six morphological periods – two frames for each historical phase of the city. In the study, a close relationship between the governmental and syntactic cores was observed. During the early and colonial phases, the city had same governmental core but different syntactic cores. In contrast, during the post-colonial phase the city had different but overlapping governmental and syntactic cores. The study is important for it helps explain the role of the governmental and syntactic cores in the formation and transformation of the city over time. As a result, the study also helps explain the relationship between functional morphology, which examines the relationship between function and structure, and the spatial morphology, which examines the relationship among the spaces of a structure.

summary The project investigates responsive building skin systems that adapt to the dynamic environmental conditions to regulate internal conditions in a habitable space over different periods of time by exhibiting a state of motion and dynamism. Passive and active building skins are developed using shape memory alloys and pneumatic actuators through investigations of smart systems that integrate smart materials and smart geometries. Nitinol springs are integrated in tensegrity systems to actuate the adaptive behaviour, which forms the passive roof system. Owing to the complexity of the multi-parametric system, genetic algorithms are developed for system optimization and calibrated with physical prototypes at varied scales. The developed systems are tested against two distinct climatic models- New Delhi and Barcelona, and evaluated for performance, based on heat and light, which are quantified as solar gain and illuminance as principles, and daylight factor for evaluation purpose. New tool-sets are developed in the process by combining various digital tools, to create a real-time feedback and memory loop system.

summary The city of Vienna follows a long-term initiative to become a Smart City. Within 2050 it aims to reduce 80% of the CO2 emissions (in comparison to 1990) and looks forward to generate ways for a sustainable energy production. (Smart City Framework Strategy 2014) Reaching this targets requires a complex planning process which involves interdisciplinary stakeholders and decision makers. An interactive multi-dimensional environment, comprising spatial objects and data models, is a helpful tool during these planning processes. This paper proposes a suitable path for the development of a structural framework for such an environment. The benefits of such an environment are shown in detail, based on an application of the economic solar heat potential in Vienna.

summary The paper analyses the emerging senses from the Smart Cities phenomenon, using as background Lemos (2017), Maia (2013), Rozestraten (2016), Söderström, Paache & Klauser (2014) and evaluating the speeches found in the SmartCity Expo Curitiba. We identified three basic senses: the binary utopia/ficcion, business and informational city, discussed by philosophers such as Foucault (2017), Lévy (2011) e Harvey (2014). The results outline the importance of political role of technology and adverts that it must not be controlled by business. Finally, the paper concludes that the smartest technology is one that opens space to the inclusion of greater human expressivity and subjectivity, not inducing a space of control.

summary This paper seeks to further the state-of-the-art knowledge on what a smart city is; by analysing the smart cities across the world. It also seeks to find out how different approaches to the smart city creation influence the city. This worked based on the ongoing review on Smart Cities that was started in 2014. In particular, it is structured as follows. First, definition of "smart city" are reviewed, next typologies of smart cities were generated by analysing the different types of smart cities across the world. Following this, case studies are reported. Case studies are followed by a reflection. Paper drawn to conclusion following this section by giving research directions to take this research further.

summary Design Thinking recognizes processes linked to empathy, creation, prototyping and storytelling, that condition design methodologies to solve complex problems with user participation. From this perspective, next to disruptive practices, we present learning experiences focus in management, design and production of graphic databases in Web 2.0 and 3.0 contexts. They are linked to photomontages and graphic communication pieces of urban-architectural works and narratives that give meaning and entity to those interventions. We recorded results that value spatial thinking with images. Also the presence of traditional skills with hybrid skills in students, that encourage fluency, creativity and innovation, self-learning, experimentation, teamwork and network integration.

summary The digitization of culture imposes new logic to the design disciplines in professional and academic areas. New roles, competencies and requirements emerge in front of an architecture that today is essentially material and also informational. The overabundance of information confuses and forced to develop strategies and skills that go beyond the traditional system of reading and observation to achieve its analysis and understanding. In this sense, the work investigates and cartography variables of information visualization related to semantic attributes, aimed to recognize their potential for instrumental experimentation in design processes within learning environments.

summary This research investigated the impact of synchronous distributed non immersive cloud-VR (cloud computing type of Virtual Reality) meetings using the annotation function by noting an architectural design process. The experimentation of collaborative design work at the early stage of a housing renovation project was executed by three designers. The synchronously distributed meetings using cloud-VR and a freehand sketching function were completed in two days. The annotation function was used effectively when a designer wished to show the space composition and volume shape of the planned building and so on. The proposed design environment, sharing a 3D virtual space with viewpoints, plans, sketches and other information synchronously and remotely, was feasible and effective.

With the development of technology in the means of architectural expression, has moved any analog or traditional activity, as in the case of the model where its inclusion and experimentation, helps create a hybrid architecture. The confrontation to new methodologies, as part of a creative education, helps significantly to brain plasticity.

summary The following paper continues with the evaluation of technologies used for the application of domotics in our country, Argentina. It was proposed to work in microarchitecture, applying it to proposals with useful design for specific urban spaces called residuals or interstitial. With this purpose an analysis was done with several existent examples of microarchitecture, systematizing the contributions of automation, regula- tion and computerized control that they may have, and assessing achievements of sustainability and user _s comfort. It was started to propose urban social typologies, for the whole society, as in information centers, experimentation, vaccination center, etc. The work is in progress.

summary Spacer fabrics are 3D warp-knitted fabrics, which have a volumetric structure. Together with the capacity to differentially stretch and contract, these materials allow three dimensional which is specific to spacer fabrics. The authors present a computational design methodology which enables the generation of form based on these material characteristics and local, regional and global material manipulations. Such a process can not only generate functional surface articulations, but also control the forming of spatial textile geometries. As a resin infused composite structure the spacer fabric can serve as architectural construction and building envelope. This new methodology to develop fibrous and textile morphology is contrary to a traditional hierarchical design process, which is based on a linear strategy from design to implementation. The investigation methods are based on analogue material experimentation and integration of the materials behaviour into a computational design process. Such a feedback process can unfold potential material morphologies and performances of spacer fabric as an architectural material.
