summary The last decade have seen substantial calls and increasing pressure for developing an integrated design teaching framework, where sustainability is an imperative priority. This paper focuses on presenting a taxonomy of the main challenges encountered within the educational domain, in the attempt to reach an effective integration. The paper also presents a set guidelines to address and try to resolve the noted challenges. As the use of Building Performance Simulation (BPS) applications is a central approach in this process aiming to reach energy efficient buildings, the paper focuses on the shortcomings noted as a result of the use of these applications in the design studios, with particular emphasis on the thermal and lighting aspects of the simulation. The taxonomy presented is a summary of the findings from literature review, as well as the surveys results which were part of the author's research project discussed in the paper.

title Assessing the Use of Advanced Daylight Simulation Modelling Tools in Enhancing the Student Learning Experience

summary In architecture schools, where the ‘studio culture’ lies at the heart of students’ learning, taught courses, particularly technology ones, are often seen as secondary or supplementary units. Successful delivery of such courses, where students can act effectively, be motivated and engaged, is a rather demanding task requiring careful planning and the use of various teaching styles. A recent challenge that faces architecture education today, and subsequently influences the way technology courses are being designed, is the growing trend in practice towards environmentally responsive design and the need for graduates with new skills in sustainable construction and urban ecology (HEFCE’s consultation document, 2005). This article presents the role of innovative simulation modelling tools in the enhancement of the student learning experience and professional development. Reference is made to a teaching practice that has recently been applied at Portsmouth School of Architecture in the United Kingdom and piloted at Deakin University in Australia. The work focuses on the structure and delivery of one of the two main technology units in the second year architecture programme that underwent two main phases of revision during the academic years 2009/10 and 2010/11. The article examines the inclusion of advanced daylight simulation modelling tools in the unit programme, and measures the effectiveness of enhancing its delivery as a key component of the curriculum on the student learning experience. A main objective of the work was to explain whether or not the introduction of a simulation modelling component, and the later improvement of its integration with the course programme and assessment, has contributed to a better learning experience and level of engagement. Student feedback and the grade distribution pattern over the last three academic years were collected and analyzed. The analysis of student feedback on the revised modelling component showed a positive influence on the learning experience and level of satisfaction and engagement. An improvement in student performance was also recorded over the last two academic years and following the implementation of new assessment design.

summary Building performance simulation tools have indeed eased the task of evaluating a building’s performance from the point of view of lighting design, heating and cooling loads, total energy loads, acoustic properties, natural lighting, ventilation, smoke and fire containment etc. However, to use these tools correctly, not only is theoretical knowledge required but also insight that can only be attained after substantial experience. For example, in order to evaluate the thermal performance alone, one needs to understand climatology, material properties, building physics, HVAC systems, internal and external gain factors, solar impacts, etc. to name a few. Hence, teaching students of Architecture how to use these tools, and also to interpret the results properly, is a tall order. This paper reports on insights gained through teaching courses on building performance simulations to graduate students in the Department of Architecture. The course content was varied each term and a different simulation software was used; namely: ECOTECT, Energy Plus and Design Builder. Data presented here will also contain feedback from the course students regarding the modelling process of the buildings, inputting the data, simulating their performance, and evaluating the results. Also, the difficulties faced during the various steps as well as the drawbacks of the tools will be discussed in depth.

summary In architectural design, computer aided design tools have an important impact on design process, but still early design stage and sustainable design are problematic issues. During sustainable architectural design process, the designer needs to comply with some regulations, which requires calculations and comparisons. Green building certification systems are developed to assist designers during this complicated process, but for an efficient sustainable design for different regions, environmental information and local building codes must be considered with green building certification system criteria. In this paper, LEED and BREEAM certification systems are going to be considered as being the most representative building environment assessment schemes that are in use. As there are conflicting criteria's according to LEED and BREAM sustainable site parameters, local building codes and environmental conditions; an efficient decision support system can be developed by using multi-objective genetic algorithm. This paper presents an effective site-use multi-objective optimization model that use pareto genetic algorithm to determine the most efficient sustainable site layout design for social housing, which could assist designers in the early stage of design process.

summary Several architectural studies tackled the methodologies of teaching the architectural design subject in general and their relation to the use of computer in particular. The trends varied in accordance with the research that is relevant to the subject due to its importance in generating new architectural models, but it didn’t crystallize a theoretical framework that identifies clear and specific vocabularies related to the methodology of teaching the computer-aided architectural design. The current study discusses the importance of this concept in an attempt to explore the particular problem represented by the non-clarity of this methodology in the department of architecture in Mosul University. Therefore, the problem of the research crystallized and its objective and its methodology were identified and this was represented by constructing a theoretical framework which includes several main items. Then the theoretical framework was applied to selected projects of architectural department students in order to manifest the particularity of teaching the computer-aided architectural design. Results showed the distinction of this department as this methodology led to the derivation of different architectural products in accordance with the particular effects using the computer technologies. The results also manifested the change in the architectural design trend that was caused due to the digital intervention in the way of the student's thinking from one hand and the components and the elements of the building from the other hand that the quality of the design can be improved by using the computer and the quantity will be more in shorter time.

summary This paper aims to discuss the potentials of novel modes of participatory design in relation to the latest developments in Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). The first part of the study involves the extraction of the basic principles from the extraordinary cases of the Medical Faculty Housing by Lucien Kroll (1976) and Cedric Price's Fun Place (1965) in which various forms of ICT-enabled participation were conceived. In the second part, we reframe the existing ICT tools and strategies and elaborate their potentials to support the modes of participation performed in these two cases. As a result, by distilling the created knowledge, we introduce a model of ICT-enabled design participation which exploits a set of collective action tools to support sustainable ways of self-organization and bottom-up design.

summary As educators, we have been witness and party of ICT’s application in teaching architecture. From computer assisted design, representation models, dynamic and interactive visualization, until the arrival of digital fabrication, the incorporation of augmented reality and the interaction on mobile devices. Reflections on digital technology have generated discussions on architectural theory in order to find the source of architectural language inspirations. We find ourselves today in a context of important intellectual renewal aimed at the design in freedom.

summary Although parametric modelling and digital design tools have become ubiquitous in digital design, there is a limited understanding of how designers apply them in their design processes (Yu et al., 2014). This paper looks at the use of GHShot versioning tool developed by the authors (Cristie & Joyce, 2018; 2019) used to capture and track changes and progression of parametric models to understand early-stage design exploration and collaboration empirically. We introduce both development history graph-based metrics (macro-process) and parametric model and geometry change metric (micro-process) as frameworks to explore and understand the captured progression data. These metrics, applied to data collected from three cohorts of classroom collaborative design exercises, exhibited students' distinct modification patterns such as major and complex creation processes or minor parameter explorations. Finally, with the metrics' applicability as an objective language to describe the (collaborative) design process, we recommend using versioning for more data-driven insight into parametric design exploration processes.

summary For the built environment's transformation we are confronted with complex dynamics connected to economic, ecologic and demographic change (Czerkauer-Yamu et al., 2013; Yamu, 2014). In general, cities are complex systems being a "heterogeneous mosaic" of a variety of cultures and functions, characterised by diverging perceptions and interests (ibid). The juxtaposed perceptions and interests in relation to ongoing spatial processes of change create a particularly complex situation. Thus, for planning processes we are in need of approaches that are able to cope not only with the urban complexity but also allow for participatory processes to empower citizens. This paper presents the approach of using Digital Twins in virtual reality (VR) for civic engagement in urban planning, enriched with quantitative and qualitative empirical data as one promising approach to tackle not only the complexity of cities but also involve citizens in the planning process.

summary The conference logo is a bird’s eye view of spiral stairs that join and separate – an homage to the famous double spiral staircase in Graz, a tourist attraction of this city and a must-see for any architecturally minded visitor. Carved out of limestone, the medieval construction of the original is a daring feat of masonry as well as a symbolic gesture. The design speaks of separation and reconciliation: The paths of two people that climb the double spiral stairs separate and then meet again at each platform. The relationship between architectural design and the growing digital repertoire of tools and possibilities seems to undergo similar cycles of attraction and rejection: enthusiasm about digital innovations – whether in Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, Energy Design, Robotic Fabrication, the many Dimensions of BIM or, as right now, in AI and Machine Learning – is typically followed by a certain disillusionment and a realization that the promises were somewhat overblown. But a turn away from these digital innovations can only be temporary. In our call for papers we refer to the first and second ‘digital turns’, a term Mario Carpo coined. Yes, it’s a bit of a pun, but you could indeed see these digital turns in our logo as well. Carpo would probably agree that design and the digital have become inseparably intertwined. While they may be circling in different directions, an innovative rejoinder is always just around the corner. The theme of the conference asked participants to re-consider the relationship between Design and the Digital. The notion of a cycle is already present in the syllable “re”. Indeed, 20 years earlier, in 2003, we held an ECAADE conference in Graz simply under the title “Digital Design” and our re-using – or is it re-cycling? – the theme can be seen as the completion of one of those cycles described above: One level up, we meet again, we’ve come full circle. The question of the relationship between Design and the Digital is still in flux, still worthy of renewed consideration. There is a historical notion implicit in the theme. To reconsider something, one needs to take a step back, to look into the past as well as into the future. Indeed, at this conference we wanted to take a longer view, something not done often enough in the fast-paced world of digital technology. Carefully considering one’s past can be a source of inspiration. In fact, the double spiral stair that inspired our conference logo also inspired many architects through the ages. Konrad Wachsmann, for example, is said to have come up with his famous Grapevine assembly system based on this double spiral stair and its intricate joinery. More recently, Rem Koolhaas deemed the double spiral staircase in Graz important enough to include a detailed model of it in his “elements of architecture” exhibition at the Venice Biennale in 2014. Our interpretation of the stair is a typically digital one, you might say. First of all: it’s a rendering of a virtual model; it only exists inside a computer. Secondly, this virtual model isn’t true to the original. Instead, it does what the digital has made so easy to do: it exaggerates. Where the original has just two spiral stairs that separate and join, our model consists of countless stairs that are joined in this way. We see only a part of the model, but the stairs appear to continue in all directions. The implication is of an endless field of spiral stairs. As the 3D model was generated with a parametric script, it would be very easy to change all parameters of it – including the number of stairs that make it up. Everyone at this conference is familiar with the concept of parametric design: it makes generating models of seemingly endless amounts of connected spiral stairs really easy. Although, of course, if we’re too literal about the term ‘endless’, generating our stair model will eventually crash even the most advanced computers. We know that, too. – That's another truth about the Digital: it makes a promise of infinity, which, in the end, it can’t keep. And even if it could: what’s the point of just adding more of the same: more variations, more options, more possible ways to get lost? Doesn’t the original double spiral staircase contain all those derivatives already? Don’t we know that ‘more’ isn’t necessarily better? In the original double spiral stair the happy end is guaranteed: the lovers’ paths meet at the top as well as when they exit the building. Therefore, the stair is also colloquially known as the Busserlstiege (the kissing stair) or the Versöhnungsstiege (reconciliation stair). In our digitally enhanced version, this outcome is no longer clear: we can choose between multiple directions at each level and we risk losing sight of the one we were with. This is also emblematic of our field of research. eCAADe was founded to promote “good practice and sharing information in relation to the use of computers in research and education in architecture and related professions” (see ecaade.org). That may have seemed a straightforward proposition forty years ago, when the association was founded. A look at the breadth and depth of research topics presented and discussed at this conference (and as a consequence in this book, for which you’re reading the editorial) shows how the field has developed over these forty years. There are sessions on Digital Design Education, on Digital Fabrication, on Virtual Reality, on Virtual Heritage, on Generative Design and Machine Learning, on Digital Cities, on Simulation and Digital Twins, on BIM, on Sustainability, on Circular Design, on Design Theory and on Digital Design Experimentations. summary The collection of visual and physical simulation tools available to a design team constitutes what can be termed the Representational Ecosystem of the design studio. Current digital paradigm does not effectively support design discussions because it is limited to the pictorial-frame and scaled representations. We analyzed for the first time the link between the Interconnected Hybrid Ideation Space (HIS) and the representational ecosystem of a design studio as a case study. The Hybrid Representational Ecosystem is proposed to better achieve a comprehensive and closer view of the design solution because it is fully hybrid (analog/digital), it supports multiple kinds of representations, scales, and co-design. The epistemology and principles of the new paradigm are described.

summary Tangle Jungle was an experiment in an alternative method of design and making for the digital age. The aim of the project was to interpret and reenact traditional craftmanship through today's digital tools. For a particular study on the subject, we looked at the theory and works of William Morris. Morris had an exceptional taste for medieval art and produced, among other things, hand-woven carpets that are still studied today. Morris reinvented the art of his time by reviving pre-industrial modes of production and designs. Today, the digital age is experiencing a similar paradigm shift. Digital tools already work, in many instances, as a direct extension of the hands of a new breed of digital artisan makers. It is possible to assess that the digital is getting closer to Morris's notion of craftsmanship. Tangle Jungle became a testing ground for this historical connection, bringing forth the question, can we redefine our own digital craftsmanship as a form of digitally reenacted Gothic revival?

summary This paper will present the main principles of Goethe’s Theory of Colours and formulate a theoretical approach for the study of polychromy in digital design pedagogy. In the first part of the paper a survey on colour theory will be presented comparing Goethe and Newton’s works on colour. The concepts of polarity [Polarität] and intensification [Steigerung] will be introduced as the two main principles of Goethe’s dynamic notion of colour. These terms will be used to explain how Goethe considered colours to induce sensual effects on the onlooker. In the second part a digital design studio that focuses on colour will be presented. The pedagogy will show how a dynamic notion of colour could be studied using digital tools. Some of the student works will be presented while addressing how a Goethean notion of sensual colours could be studied as spatial parameters. The goal of the paper is to distill a theoretical approach towards the study of colour in architecture and contemplate on how it could be applied within the digital design curriculum.

summary This article relates an experiment linking two types of forms: geometric forms generated from algorithms by mathematical functions and sonic forms generated from algorithms and linked to the first. In order to formalize a graphical and musical object called “sonic object" were used the following tools: the environment of a graphic program, the C# language and the Midi-dot-Net musical library. Diverse equations are used to generate the geometric shapes which generate periodical, cyclical and circular movements. Other equations used in the experiment are formulas adapted from the Edward Lorenz's Strange Attractor. Current research into the problem of the generation of patterns of movement, such as that of Jules Moloney, and research which deals with algorithms which generate shapes, such as that of Robert Krawczyk, have been taken as references and parameters for comparison for this work..

summary This paper focuses on an investigation to explore architectural design potentials with a responsive material system and physical computing. Contemporary architects and designers are seeking to integrate physical computing in responsive architectural designs; however, they have largely borrowed from engineering technology’s mechanical devices and components. There is the opportunity to investigate an unexplored design approach to exploit the responsive capacity of material properties as alternatives to the current focus on mechanical components and discrete sensing devices. This opportunity creates a different design paradigm for responsive architecture that investigates the potential to integrate physical computing with responsive materials as one integrated material system. Instead of adopting highly intricate and expensive materials, this approach is explored through accessible and off-the-shelf materials to form a responsive material system, called Lumina. Lumina is implemented as an architectural installation called Cloud that serves as a morphing architectural skin. Cloud is a proof of concept to embody a responsive material system with physical computing to create a reciprocal and luminous architectural intervention for a selected dark corridor. It represents a different design paradigm for responsive architecture through alternative exploitation of contemporary materials and parametric design tools.

summary This paper aims to investigate the ways in which the traditional processes of glassblowing techniques could be incorporated with contemporary generative design processes in the realization of new novel architectural systems. Pedagogical issues on how such prototyping processes could be better integrated within architectural education are also discussed. With the use of algorithmic design methodology to generate/visualize the components assembled in multitudes and digital fabrication machineries to produce the necessary moulds/jigs/tools/connection joints, a series of 5 different glass prototypes have been actualized at the scale of 1:1 or otherwise. The work is the direct outcome of a new programme founded and directed by the author as part of the Architectural Association (AA) School of Architecture‘s Visiting School in 2013. Part 1 briefly introduces the specific agenda and how the corresponding structure of the programme is designed to facilitate the glass research work done concurrently at the digital fabrication laboratory and glassblowing studio. Part 2 would systematically discuss in detail the design of each of the 5 main glass prototypes made, presented alongside photographs and diagrams to illustrate the prototypes’ respective assembly and fabrication logics. Part 3 would evaluate the work done and project plans for the next iteration of the research in 2014.

summary The evaluation of previous research carried out by Nomads.usp - Center of Interactive Living Studies - which used several classical methodological instruments of qualitative research in order to understand urban and social contexts, found limits of these tools when they were employed to encompass nuances related to ways of life, worldviews and viewpoints of surveyed individuals. The aim of this reseach is to verify the limits and the possibilities of using two activities conceived for usage in cultural events with audience’s presence - Digital Graffiti and Comment’s Projection -, in a matter of utilizing it as well as procedures for gathering informations about its audiences by proposing communication processes and dialogs, with the aid of digital media.

summary Creativity is an important factor for innovators. According to Eguchi and Pinheiro (2008) the basis of design is innovation because of the use creative methodology. It’s important to remember that the word “project” comes from the Latin “proyectus”, meaning “a forward throwing action”. According to Ramos (2006), “educating for creativity is essential.” Beetlestone (2000), De Bono (1993), Munari (1997) and Pawlak (2000) argue that as we’re children we’re curious to find answers to everything, but that traditional schooling brakes the creativity. This research is a methodological test which aims to identify the reasons for student’s selection of specific creative tools used in university projects.
