summary Several research projects (Gramazio et al. 2014; Willmann et al. 2015; Helm et al. 2017; Adel et al. 2018; Adel Ahmadian 2020) have investigated the use of automated assembly technologies (e.g., industrial robotic arms) for the fabrication of nonstandard timber structures. Building on these projects, we present a novel and transferable process for the robotic fabrication of bespoke timber subassemblies made of off-the-shelf standard timber elements. A nonstandard timber structure (Figure 2), consisting of four bespoke subassemblies: three vertical supports and a Zollinger (Allen 1999) roof structure, acts as the case study for the research and validates the feasibility of the proposed process.

title Structural, Deployable Folds - Design and Simulation of Biological Inspired Folded Structures

summary This paper presents a concept of folding as a form-generator for a structural system that allows the ability to deploy large spanning structures. The presented approach studies the embedded kinetic possibilities of folded structures and focuses on a parametric modeling process that allows structural performance evaluation of different types of the same origami family in order to optimize the geometry for a given scenario. The workflow between scripting based form generation - within Rhinoceros and Excel - and LS-DYNA is presented in detail. Additionally, within the context of an architectural project we discuss the question of scalability from a thin microstructure to a thickened roof structure.

The flexibility of the system allowed the generation of five experiments with different formal arrangements, contributing to the development of the creative process by obtaining unexpected results and more efficient. The paper presents a brief conceptual description of the evolutionary generative system, the description of the method used and the analysis of results.

summary This paper is a report on authors' ongoing effort in creating a universal model for architectural programming. Authors analyse three well-known formats for architectural programming and devise a UML model representing each format. The UML models are further analysed and compared to form a super UML model that can bring together all the three formats under one roof and act as a universal format for architectural programming (UFPOR). The results improve the integration of architectural programming and BIM data models and are of value to the software development field and architectural programing.

summary The shift from traditional CAD to BIM has created a significant potential to embed optimization processes in many stages of the design. The presented research is situated in the early design stage of inception and concept, focusing on analysis-driven-form-finding during the integrated design approach within a BIM environment. A custom analysis framework, has been developed and linked to a visual programming environment that allows the exchange of data with the parametric components of a BIM environment. The developed workflow and sequential split of functionalities enables a shared design environment for multiple experts and the design-team. The environment is intended to close the loop from analysis to parametric modeling in order to generate and evaluate building designs against performance criteria, with the aim to expedite the design decision process. The prototype has been presented to participants of the Deep-Space Cluster at SmartGeometry 2014.

summary Key parameter of a reasoning process supporting real time performance is the use of active heuristics that facilitate the achievement of goals in a timely manner (Dodiawala et al. 1989). A real time approach should incorporate speed, timeliness and adaptation during the execution of tasks. Speed and efficient knowledge processing are addressed for the solution of complex building engineering problems, such as the calibration of Building Energy Models (BEM) to the actual performance data. During retrofit projects, calibrated BEM models aid the design process, and provide a solid base for performative assessments. Despite the demand for building performance evaluations, BEM calibration remains a work-intensive task (Lam et al. 2014). This study proposes a time efficient framework for BEM calibration input data management based on the methodology of a blackboard artificial intelligence knowledge processing system. The resulting model was used for sequential data mining for the energy assessment during the renovation of a commercial building.

summary The project investigates responsive building skin systems that adapt to the dynamic environmental conditions to regulate internal conditions in a habitable space over different periods of time by exhibiting a state of motion and dynamism. Passive and active building skins are developed using shape memory alloys and pneumatic actuators through investigations of smart systems that integrate smart materials and smart geometries. Nitinol springs are integrated in tensegrity systems to actuate the adaptive behaviour, which forms the passive roof system. Owing to the complexity of the multi-parametric system, genetic algorithms are developed for system optimization and calibrated with physical prototypes at varied scales. The developed systems are tested against two distinct climatic models- New Delhi and Barcelona, and evaluated for performance, based on heat and light, which are quantified as solar gain and illuminance as principles, and daylight factor for evaluation purpose. New tool-sets are developed in the process by combining various digital tools, to create a real-time feedback and memory loop system.

summary In this paper we present an outline of a newly started project to develop a tool which connects BIM to a manufacturing technique like 3D printing. First we will look some promising manufacturing techniques. We will design a small dwelling and export it into a BIM, from which we will extract our data to generate the path the nozzle has to follow. The chosen path is constrained by the material properties, the design and speed of the nozzle. To validate the system we develop a small VR tool in which we mimic a manufacturing tool.

summary Creativity with its various processes is involved in all design actions. Creativity used in architectural design is different than creativity in other domains. However, creativity in general with its related cognition processes has no general theory. This research proposes certain activities of initial architectural design phases in which the role of activity is important. The research proceeds to present a case study of two architectural design studios in which a VR environment is employed in order to investigate the effect of VR use on the creativity in those initial design phases. The research applies a methodology of qualitative and quantitative analysis. Various architectural design factors are neutralized to overcome the influence generated from human factors variation and design thinking prejudice on architectural designing and the associated creativities.

summary The use of generative systems has been widely investigated in the architectural design process through different procedures and levels of autonomy to generate form.The digression from abstract pre- existing notions of vocabulary and rules – even when resulting in emergent forms – to address complex real- world contexts is yet a challenging undertaking.This paper explores incorporating context in the process of designing using generative systems from ideation to fabrication, and explores the relationship between the emergent nature of generative design and the situated act of designing while using generative design tools.A course offered for 3rd year architecture students at the Department of Architecture, Ain Shams University, Egypt, was designed for this purpose. 110 students employed systems including shape grammars, L- systems, fractals and cellular automata, to design and fabricate 8 group projects.A discussion around emergence and situatedness is presented, with special attention to the designing process from ideation to fabrication.

summary When thinking about the future vision of a city, having in mind recent development in digital technologies and digital design tools we are inclined to expect new building structures which incorporate this technology to better help us manage the complexity of life, and to simplify our daily lives and tasks. The idea behind this research paper lies in design of such structures, which could be put inside an urban context and engage in creating a built environment that can add more to the quality of life. For us Interactive architecture is architecture that is responsive, flexible, changing, always moving and adapting to the needs of today. The world is becoming more dynamic, society is constantly changing and the new needs it develops need to be accommodated. As a result architecture has to follow. Spaces have to become more adaptive, responsive and nature concerned, while having the ability for metamorphosis, flexibility and interactivity. Taken as a starting point of this idea is a specific module from graduation project in 2014 "The Unexpected city", where it was possible to test out first ideas about interactive and flexible objects in an urban environment.

summary The general picture of Architecture Engineering and Construction (AEC) is of a sector that is a pyramid with control being in the hands of large players with a large base of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). It ensues naturally that SMEs are key players in supporting the large companies. This suggests that, the AEC sector has a continuous demand for collaboration. Collaborative working has been implemented in numerous companies. These efforts have resulted in the wide recognition of the opportunity that emerging technologies offer the AEC sector. It is, however, commonly observed that SMEs are likely to magnify the sector trend and to be less technically forward thinking than large companies. The main focus of this paper is, therefore, to explore the use of IT within AEC, and the barriers and different implementation factors that can influence SMEs to develop, in response to business pressures using the opportunities provided by collaborative technologies.

summary This work explores the possible use of the shape grammar formalism in generating small/medium sized dwellings or shelters as a possible and effective solution for shelter shortages that usually follows in the wake of a natural disaster. The shelters are generated using a set of pre-fabricated elements that add up to form a coherent and functional dwelling. The grammar exemplified here, being a shape grammar, deals specially with generating the underlying functional diagram and the floor plan of one possible solution based on a set of typologies design a priori.

summary BIM Content Libraries are performing as online sources for building product models. In order to effectively use the product models, it is important to organize them systematically within these databases. But currently there is no standard or guideline for this purpose. Products in these libraries are being categorized based on different criteria such as the object classes in the target platform, by referring to multiple classification systems or based on customized categories. This paper studies some of the BIM Content Libraries and investigates the structure that each library is using for product categorization. It indicates the need for a generic framework for the purpose of product categorization in BIM Content Libraries.

summary Bricks have been used in the construction industry as a building medium for millennia. Distinct patterns of bricks depict the unique aesthetic intentions found in Roman, Gothic and Islamic architecture. In contemporary practice, the use of digital tools in design has enabled methodologies for creating new forms in architecture. CAD and BIM systems provide new opportunities for designers to create parametric objects for building form generation. In masonry design, there exists an inherent contradiction between traditional patterns in brick design, which are formal and prescribed, and the potential for new patterns generated using design scripting. In addition, current tools do not provide interactive techniques for the design of brickwork patterns that can manage constant changes parametrically, to inform and influence design process, by providing design feedback on the constructive and structural aspects of the proposed brick pattern and geometry. This research looks into the parametric techniques that can be applied to create different kinds of patterns on brick walls. It discusses a methodology for an interactive brickwork design within generative techniques. By integrating data between two computational platforms – the first based on image analysis and the second on parametric modeling, we demonstrate a methodology and application that can generate interactive arbitrary patterns and map it to the brick wall in real-time.

summary In continuation to the Deceptive Landscape Installation research project (Agkathidis, Kocatürk 2014), this paper investigates the implementation of generative design techniques in undergraduate architectural design education. After reviewing the main definitions of generative design synoptically, we have assessed the application of a modified generative method on a final year, undergraduate design studio, in order to evaluate its potential and its suitability within the framework of a research led design studio, leading to an RIBA accredited Part I degree. Our research findings based on analysis of the design outputs, student performance, external examiners reports as well as student course evaluation surveys indicate a positive outcome on the studio's design approach, as well as its suitability for an undergraduate design studio. They initiate a flourishing debate about accomplishments and failures of a design methodology, which still remains alien to many undergraduate curricula.

summary The last decade have seen substantial calls and increasing pressure for developing an integrated design teaching framework, where sustainability is an imperative priority. This paper focuses on presenting a taxonomy of the main challenges encountered within the educational domain, in the attempt to reach an effective integration. The paper also presents a set guidelines to address and try to resolve the noted challenges. As the use of Building Performance Simulation (BPS) applications is a central approach in this process aiming to reach energy efficient buildings, the paper focuses on the shortcomings noted as a result of the use of these applications in the design studios, with particular emphasis on the thermal and lighting aspects of the simulation. The taxonomy presented is a summary of the findings from literature review, as well as the surveys results which were part of the author's research project discussed in the paper.

summary Innovative design approaches are needed for mass housing implementations. Especially increasing interaction between user and designer is major important in the design decisions of these buildings. For this, it is seriously necessary to benefit from technological advances in computational designs, because digital tools like shape grammar, cellular automata, genetic algorithm, l-systems and agent-based models in this field provide not only to save time and to manage the relationships but also to generate many different alternatives. Accordingly, a digital support tool for designers has been developed by using cellular automata approach and scripts of 3Ds Max software. It produces samples of housing design plans which is generated by cellular automata approach according to the data of users' preferences. In this paper the interface and contributions of the developed model are introduced and discussed.
