title Nominalized Matter: Agency of Material

summary This paper investigates making as a process that brings together diverse materials and combines their flow in anticipation of what might emerge. Ingold calls this approach the textility of making, which gives priority to the formation of materials as a process, in which form is generated through interventions within fields of forces and currents of materials - not through a predefined notion of an ideal outcome. The approach opposes the Aristotelian hylomorphic approach, which focuses on final products. This paper investigates textiles techniques and their potential for simultaneously creating ornamental and structural systems. This work is conducted through a sequence of architecture design studios, producing the case studies found in this paper. Within the paper different examples of textile systems are introduced ranging from a Semperian approach (wall as dress) to form finding experiments with active textile materials - demonstrating the potential for methods utilizing material agency to inform architectural design

summary This research builds upon projects from both university and practice to explore new approaches on how the multifunctionality, flexibility, and performance of wood can be utilized to inform new approaches towards both design and fabrication. The following projects use physical prototypes to bend wood just within its tolerances, design with the high precision of multi-axis robotic fabrication in mind, and finally inform the shape of a large free-form structure through material properties.

summary This research prefaces the need for engaging with endusers in early stages of design as means to achieve higher performing designs with an increased certainty for enduser satisfaction. While the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) community has previously used virtual reality, the primary use has been for coordination and visualization of Building Information Models (BIM). This work builds upon the value of use of virtual environments in AEC processes but asks the research question "how can we better test and measure design alternatives through the integration of immersive virtual reality into our digital and physical mock up workflows? " The work is predicated on the need for design exploration through associative parametric design models, as well as, testing and measuring design alternatives with human subjects. The paper focuses on immersive virtual environments (IVEs) and presents a literature review of the use of virtual environments for integrating enduser feedback during the design stage. In a controlled pilot experiment, the authors find that human participants perform similarly in IVE and the physical environment in everyday tasks. The participants indicated they felt a strong sense of "presence" in IVE. In the future, the authors plan on using IVE to explore the integration of multi agent systems to impact building design performance and occupant satisfaction.

summary Building designers make decisions in early design stages that have large impact on building performance, including those of energy-, daylight- and indoor environment performance. Building performance simulation (BPS) tools can support the designer, in making better decisions, by providing the performance consequences of design choices. However BPS tools often require deep technical knowledge and is too time consuming to use to effectively support the design exploration in the early design stages. To solve this challenge, the current paper proposes: Sentient building performance simulation systems, which combine one or more high precision BPS tools to provide near instantaneous performance feedback directly in the design tool. Sentient BPS systems are essentially combining: 1) design tools, 2) parametric tools, 3) BPS tools, 4) dynamic databases 5) interpolation techniques and 6) prediction techniques as a fast and valid simulation system for the early design stage.

summary This paper looks at two distinct approaches to kinetic façades and smart building assemblies reminiscent of designs for the Institut du Monde Arabe and for Hoberman's Simon Center. The first approach uses Arduino microcontroller-guided kinetic components with a distinct assemblage of elements, each performing a dedicated function such as sensor, actuator, or logical processing unit. The second approach incorporates custom-designed smart materials-shape memory alloys (SMAs)-that not only complement or replace the need for electrically operated sensors or actuators, but also eliminate a microcontroller, since in this arrangement the material itself performs computational functions. The paper will discuss case studies that use physical computing and smart-material models as vehicles to discuss the value of each approach to adaptive design in architecture. Building on these observations, the paper looks into conceptual aspects of an integrated hybrid system that combines both computation approaches and unique opportunities inherent to these hybrid designs.

summary The main purpose of this research is to introduce and verify selected advanced computational methodologies operating with agent-oriented approach that are applicable within the framework of emergent urban design strategies in early stages of zoning proceedings. The aim is to demonstrate that speculative matter of the phenomenon of emergence in terms of design thought driven by computational models can also be applicable within real existing urban conditions. The research concurs previous researches in the field of urban pre-reconfigurations in the selected city environments. It concentrates on developing a simulation model as an analytical and generative instrumental platform for architects in early phases of urban design and synthetizes accumulated computational advancements based on agent-oriented approach.

summary In this paper we present an outline of a newly started project to develop a tool which connects BIM to a manufacturing technique like 3D printing. First we will look some promising manufacturing techniques. We will design a small dwelling and export it into a BIM, from which we will extract our data to generate the path the nozzle has to follow. The chosen path is constrained by the material properties, the design and speed of the nozzle. To validate the system we develop a small VR tool in which we mimic a manufacturing tool.

summary The use of generative systems has been widely investigated in the architectural design process through different procedures and levels of autonomy to generate form.The digression from abstract pre- existing notions of vocabulary and rules – even when resulting in emergent forms – to address complex real- world contexts is yet a challenging undertaking.This paper explores incorporating context in the process of designing using generative systems from ideation to fabrication, and explores the relationship between the emergent nature of generative design and the situated act of designing while using generative design tools.A course offered for 3rd year architecture students at the Department of Architecture, Ain Shams University, Egypt, was designed for this purpose. 110 students employed systems including shape grammars, L- systems, fractals and cellular automata, to design and fabricate 8 group projects.A discussion around emergence and situatedness is presented, with special attention to the designing process from ideation to fabrication.

summary When thinking about the future vision of a city, having in mind recent development in digital technologies and digital design tools we are inclined to expect new building structures which incorporate this technology to better help us manage the complexity of life, and to simplify our daily lives and tasks. The idea behind this research paper lies in design of such structures, which could be put inside an urban context and engage in creating a built environment that can add more to the quality of life. For us Interactive architecture is architecture that is responsive, flexible, changing, always moving and adapting to the needs of today. The world is becoming more dynamic, society is constantly changing and the new needs it develops need to be accommodated. As a result architecture has to follow. Spaces have to become more adaptive, responsive and nature concerned, while having the ability for metamorphosis, flexibility and interactivity. Taken as a starting point of this idea is a specific module from graduation project in 2014 "The Unexpected city", where it was possible to test out first ideas about interactive and flexible objects in an urban environment.

summary The general picture of Architecture Engineering and Construction (AEC) is of a sector that is a pyramid with control being in the hands of large players with a large base of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). It ensues naturally that SMEs are key players in supporting the large companies. This suggests that, the AEC sector has a continuous demand for collaboration. Collaborative working has been implemented in numerous companies. These efforts have resulted in the wide recognition of the opportunity that emerging technologies offer the AEC sector. It is, however, commonly observed that SMEs are likely to magnify the sector trend and to be less technically forward thinking than large companies. The main focus of this paper is, therefore, to explore the use of IT within AEC, and the barriers and different implementation factors that can influence SMEs to develop, in response to business pressures using the opportunities provided by collaborative technologies.

summary Several research projects (Gramazio et al. 2014; Willmann et al. 2015; Helm et al. 2017; Adel et al. 2018; Adel Ahmadian 2020) have investigated the use of automated assembly technologies (e.g., industrial robotic arms) for the fabrication of nonstandard timber structures. Building on these projects, we present a novel and transferable process for the robotic fabrication of bespoke timber subassemblies made of off-the-shelf standard timber elements. A nonstandard timber structure (Figure 2), consisting of four bespoke subassemblies: three vertical supports and a Zollinger (Allen 1999) roof structure, acts as the case study for the research and validates the feasibility of the proposed process.

summary This work explores the possible use of the shape grammar formalism in generating small/medium sized dwellings or shelters as a possible and effective solution for shelter shortages that usually follows in the wake of a natural disaster. The shelters are generated using a set of pre-fabricated elements that add up to form a coherent and functional dwelling. The grammar exemplified here, being a shape grammar, deals specially with generating the underlying functional diagram and the floor plan of one possible solution based on a set of typologies design a priori.

summary Bricks have been used in the construction industry as a building medium for millennia. Distinct patterns of bricks depict the unique aesthetic intentions found in Roman, Gothic and Islamic architecture. In contemporary practice, the use of digital tools in design has enabled methodologies for creating new forms in architecture. CAD and BIM systems provide new opportunities for designers to create parametric objects for building form generation. In masonry design, there exists an inherent contradiction between traditional patterns in brick design, which are formal and prescribed, and the potential for new patterns generated using design scripting. In addition, current tools do not provide interactive techniques for the design of brickwork patterns that can manage constant changes parametrically, to inform and influence design process, by providing design feedback on the constructive and structural aspects of the proposed brick pattern and geometry. This research looks into the parametric techniques that can be applied to create different kinds of patterns on brick walls. It discusses a methodology for an interactive brickwork design within generative techniques. By integrating data between two computational platforms – the first based on image analysis and the second on parametric modeling, we demonstrate a methodology and application that can generate interactive arbitrary patterns and map it to the brick wall in real-time.

summary The last decade have seen substantial calls and increasing pressure for developing an integrated design teaching framework, where sustainability is an imperative priority. This paper focuses on presenting a taxonomy of the main challenges encountered within the educational domain, in the attempt to reach an effective integration. The paper also presents a set guidelines to address and try to resolve the noted challenges. As the use of Building Performance Simulation (BPS) applications is a central approach in this process aiming to reach energy efficient buildings, the paper focuses on the shortcomings noted as a result of the use of these applications in the design studios, with particular emphasis on the thermal and lighting aspects of the simulation. The taxonomy presented is a summary of the findings from literature review, as well as the surveys results which were part of the author's research project discussed in the paper.

summary Innovative design approaches are needed for mass housing implementations. Especially increasing interaction between user and designer is major important in the design decisions of these buildings. For this, it is seriously necessary to benefit from technological advances in computational designs, because digital tools like shape grammar, cellular automata, genetic algorithm, l-systems and agent-based models in this field provide not only to save time and to manage the relationships but also to generate many different alternatives. Accordingly, a digital support tool for designers has been developed by using cellular automata approach and scripts of 3Ds Max software. It produces samples of housing design plans which is generated by cellular automata approach according to the data of users' preferences. In this paper the interface and contributions of the developed model are introduced and discussed.

summary This paper explores a new approach in the architectural design process aiming to construct Makkah's architectural identity. Makkah, which is a city of unique sacred values, has been losing its battle to preserve it heritage buildings. Traditional districts with their heritage buildings have been cleared in order to construct skyscrapers to accommodate the increasing number of pilgrims. While some argue for preserving heritage buildings others insist in building more skyscrapers. Within these conflicting views, architects and urban designers use CAD software to document heritage buildings without informing the future architectural design process. This paper argues for adopting digital architecture as an approach for preserving the architectural heritage of Makkah by studying heritage buildings as systems that can be digitally represented in virtual world. This goes beyond the physical representation of heritage artefacts to investigate in depth the logic that guide the design process. The roushan, which is one of the unique heritage artefacts in Makkan's architecture can be an interface between reality and the virtual environment in the design process. This goes behind modeling the roushan, to employ the principle of virtual representation in the design process. The digital representation of heritage becomes the realm for research transforming the virtual into reality. The hope is to produce an architecture that is related to its local heritage, contemporary in design and responsive to its environment, as well as to advocate principles, references and techniques at the core of the design process, in an educational and professional context. In broader picture the goal is to achieve a city that is responsive to human activities adapted to changes, sustainable in physical forms and social relations and above all unique in design and identity.
