summary Material Swarm Articulations, is an experiment in developing a multi-objective optimization system that incorporates bottom up approaches for informing architectural design. The paper presents an initial built project that demonstrates the combination of a structural form finding method, with an agent based design system through the digital fabrication processes. The objective of this research is to develop a workflow combined with material and construction constraints that has the potential to increase performance objectives while enabling geometric complexity and design driven articulation of a traditional tectonic system. The emphasis of the research at this stage is to take advantage of material properties and assembly methods applied to a digital design and simulation workflow that enables emergent patterns to influence the performance of the space.The paper illustrates the research through a prototype of a self standing canopy structure in 1:1 scale. It presents results of the form finding, generative patterning, digital fabrication affordances and sets and agenda for next steps in the use of multi-agent systems for design purposes.

summary The wood - humidity interaction of solid wood has been tested through generations on Norwegian traditional panelling. This concept has been further explored by Michael Hensel and Steffen Reichert with Achim Menges on plywood and laminates in basic research. Plywood or laminates are better programmable but they are less sustainable due to the use of glue. This research focused on predicting the performance of solid wood in tangential section which is applied to humidity-temperature responsive screen for industrial production. With the method Systems Oriented Design, the research evaluated data from material science, forestry, meteorology, biology, chemistry and the production market. Themethod was introduced by Birger Sevaldson in 2007 with the argument that the changes in our globalized world and the need for sustainability demands an increase of the complexity of the design process. (Sevaldson 2013)Several samples has been tested for its environmental interaction. The data has been integrated in parametric models that tested the overall systems. Based on the simulations, the most suitable concept has been prototyped and measured for its performance. This lead to another sampling of the material whose data are the basis for another prototype. Ray 2 is an environmental responsive screen that is airing the structure in dry weather, while closing up when the humidity level is high, not allowing the moisture inside.

summary Spacer fabrics are 3D warp-knitted fabrics, which have a volumetric structure. Together with the capacity to differentially stretch and contract, these materials allow three dimensional which is specific to spacer fabrics. The authors present a computational design methodology which enables the generation of form based on these material characteristics and local, regional and global material manipulations. Such a process can not only generate functional surface articulations, but also control the forming of spatial textile geometries. As a resin infused composite structure the spacer fabric can serve as architectural construction and building envelope. This new methodology to develop fibrous and textile morphology is contrary to a traditional hierarchical design process, which is based on a linear strategy from design to implementation. The investigation methods are based on analogue material experimentation and integration of the materials behaviour into a computational design process. Such a feedback process can unfold potential material morphologies and performances of spacer fabric as an architectural material.

summary This study describes a didactic method for the introduction of parametric design in graphic and digital geometry courses in architectural training. It started with the recognition of the concept of parametric design and the investment in the appropriation of Grasshopper associated with Rhinoceros. Paper folding exercises were configured both physically and in the digital space. Through an interactive dynamic between traditional processes, by hand and digital, and parametric design, a learning path was defined in a playful manner which highlights the differences between methods of representation and its implications for the design action starting from a first semester of training.

summary This paper aims to investigate the ways in which the traditional processes of glassblowing techniques could be incorporated with contemporary generative design processes in the realization of new novel architectural systems. Pedagogical issues on how such prototyping processes could be better integrated within architectural education are also discussed. With the use of algorithmic design methodology to generate/visualize the components assembled in multitudes and digital fabrication machineries to produce the necessary moulds/jigs/tools/connection joints, a series of 5 different glass prototypes have been actualized at the scale of 1:1 or otherwise. The work is the direct outcome of a new programme founded and directed by the author as part of the Architectural Association (AA) School of Architecture‘s Visiting School in 2013. Part 1 briefly introduces the specific agenda and how the corresponding structure of the programme is designed to facilitate the glass research work done concurrently at the digital fabrication laboratory and glassblowing studio. Part 2 would systematically discuss in detail the design of each of the 5 main glass prototypes made, presented alongside photographs and diagrams to illustrate the prototypes’ respective assembly and fabrication logics. Part 3 would evaluate the work done and project plans for the next iteration of the research in 2014.

summary Increasing use of BIM has represented a continuing shift in traditional assumptions on how we navigate the design process. BIM is affording the student the ability to gain a greater understanding of their design ideas via the exploration of scale, spatial organisation and structure, amongst many other design layers, in increasing levels of detail, at the same point in the design process. Architectural education is at a delayed tipping point where architectural students are increasingly looking towards BIM to streamline their design process drawn by the production of realistic visualisation, but with a lack of knowledge and skill in its application. With a lack of guidance and understanding around the application of BIM, the use of BIM in this manner overlooks the potential of BIM to construct and test virtual simulations of proposed schemes, to support design enquiry. A historical concern for the pedagogy constructed around the students’ design process is the application of methods and techniques that support the progression through the design process, (Ambrose, 2014; dash mei & Safari, 2018). This study examines the design process of architectural students and the interaction between analogue and digital methods used in design. These primary modes of communication, offer the opportunity to query the roles and rules of traditional architectural conventions around ‘problem finding’ and ‘problem solving’, challenging the ‘traditional’ design process examined by pioneers like Bruner (1966) and Schon (1987). These approaches are distilled from the findings of the study and presented as guidance to those teaching in architectural aBIMemia to align pedagogic goals to methods of abstraction in this new era of design education reconsidering digital methods in design.

summary This research prefaces the need for engaging with endusers in early stages of design as means to achieve higher performing designs with an increased certainty for enduser satisfaction. While the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) community has previously used virtual reality, the primary use has been for coordination and visualization of Building Information Models (BIM). This work builds upon the value of use of virtual environments in AEC processes but asks the research question "how can we better test and measure design alternatives through the integration of immersive virtual reality into our digital and physical mock up workflows? " The work is predicated on the need for design exploration through associative parametric design models, as well as, testing and measuring design alternatives with human subjects. The paper focuses on immersive virtual environments (IVEs) and presents a literature review of the use of virtual environments for integrating enduser feedback during the design stage. In a controlled pilot experiment, the authors find that human participants perform similarly in IVE and the physical environment in everyday tasks. The participants indicated they felt a strong sense of "presence" in IVE. In the future, the authors plan on using IVE to explore the integration of multi agent systems to impact building design performance and occupant satisfaction.

At the level of residential design and on the grounds that housing plays an important role in the government policies and given that housing is a basic unit common to all urban communities on earth , the use of different programs to show its typicality in two dimensions or in the third dimension - for example, using software "AutoCAD " " 3D Max " , " ArchiCAD " ... etc. - gave virtualisation smart, creative and beautiful forms which lead to better understand the used /or to be used residential spaces, and thus the conclusion that the life system of dwelling under design or under study , as can specifically recognize spatial structure in housing design - using digital software applying "Space Syntax" for example - in the shadow of slowly growing digital and creative development with the help of high-speed computers . the morphological structure of the dwelling is considered to be the most important contemporary residential designs Investigation through which the researcher in this area aims to understand the various behavioral relations and social structures within the projected residential area, using Space Syntax techniques. Through the structural morphology of dwellings can be inferred quality networks, levels of connectivity and depth and places of openness or closure within the dwelling under study, or under design. How, then, have intelligently contributed this digital craft to the perception of those spatial fixtures ? The aim of this research is to apply an appropriate program in the field of vernacular residential design and notably Space syntax which relate to the understanding and analysis of spatial structures, and also demonstrate its role at the morphological and spatial structure aspects, and prove how effective it helps to understand the social logic of domestic space through social individual/collective relationships and behaviors projected on the spatial configurations of dwellings. The answer to the issue raised above and at the methodological aspect, the study discussed the application of space syntax techniques on the subject. The findings tend to prove the efficiency by comparing samples of Berber vernacular domestic spaces from the Mzab, the Aures and Kabilya in Algeria, and has also led to ascertain the intelligibility of space syntax techniques in reading the differences between the behaviors in domestic spaces in different areas of the sample through long periods of time .

summary A panel-hinge framework is a structure composed of rigid panels connected by hinges. It was recently proved that for a so-called generic position, the rigidity of panel-hinge frameworks can be tested by examining the combinatorial property of the underlying graph. In this study, we apply such combinatorial characteristics to create design forms. However, such characterization is only valid for so-called "generic" panel-hinge frameworks. When considering the application of design forms, we need to take into account non-generic cases. In this paper, we develop the method to inductively generate non-generic rigid panel-hinge frameworks consisting of orthogonal panels and to inductively generate rigid panel-hinge frameworks based on fractal geometry coupled with space filling 3-dimensional convex polyhedron as a construction unit. We give examples of forms by the proposed method to demonstrate the applicability to design forms.

summary With this paper we present a fully automated semantic shape similarity detection based on N-rings with further potential for shape synthesis in a topological correct feature space. Therefore a way of symmetric encoding of geometry, optimized for the use as feature-vector in self-organizing maps, is introduced. Furthermore we present a modified kernel for the detection of the best matching unit in self-organizing maps especially designed for a data topology differing from the default predecessor/successor structure. Finally we provide the results of a conducted experiment clustering building blocks of an area in Zürich, Switzerland.

summary This paper explores a new approach in the architectural design process aiming to construct Makkah's architectural identity. Makkah, which is a city of unique sacred values, has been losing its battle to preserve it heritage buildings. Traditional districts with their heritage buildings have been cleared in order to construct skyscrapers to accommodate the increasing number of pilgrims. While some argue for preserving heritage buildings others insist in building more skyscrapers. Within these conflicting views, architects and urban designers use CAD software to document heritage buildings without informing the future architectural design process. This paper argues for adopting digital architecture as an approach for preserving the architectural heritage of Makkah by studying heritage buildings as systems that can be digitally represented in virtual world. This goes beyond the physical representation of heritage artefacts to investigate in depth the logic that guide the design process. The roushan, which is one of the unique heritage artefacts in Makkan's architecture can be an interface between reality and the virtual environment in the design process. This goes behind modeling the roushan, to employ the principle of virtual representation in the design process. The digital representation of heritage becomes the realm for research transforming the virtual into reality. The hope is to produce an architecture that is related to its local heritage, contemporary in design and responsive to its environment, as well as to advocate principles, references and techniques at the core of the design process, in an educational and professional context. In broader picture the goal is to achieve a city that is responsive to human activities adapted to changes, sustainable in physical forms and social relations and above all unique in design and identity.

summary This paper outlines a particular component of very well known project: Antoni Gaudí’s Sagrada Família Basilica in Barcelona (1882– on-going but scheduled for completion in 2026). At the time of writing the realisation of the project has proceeded for 87 years since Gaudí's death (1852-1926). As a building site it has been a living laboratory for the nexus between traditional construction offsite manufacturing and digital fabrication since the computers were first introduced to the project:CAD in 1989 closely followed by CAAD two years later. More remarkably CAD/CAM commenced its significant influence in 1991 with the take-up of sem robotised stone cutting and carving. The subject of this paper is an elevated auditorium space that is one of the relatively few ‘sketchy’ areas that Gaudí bequeathed the successors for the design of his magnum opus.

summary This paper outlines a working methodology for the parametric development of lattice shell structures combining surface topology and form-finding with the material constraints of straight lath members woven into a geodesic network. By employing non-uniform grid spacing, a wider typology of spatial types can be employed than can be achieved with traditional flat-matt lattice shell construction. As a parametric design tool and working methodology, some of the heavy lifting in form-finding and geodesic analysis can be off-loaded to the tool, such that a more comprehensive attention can be placed on other design criteria such as spatial development and environmental response while maintaining the elegance and economy of lattice shells.

summary This paper presents part of a broader research project in which a set of complementary computational techniques have been applied to investigate and interpret traditional Chinese architecture. The techniques involve digital modelling, algorithmic representation and digital fabrication. The ancient rule books that describe the traditional Chinese design styles and construction technologies are the basis for the parametric rules and algorithms and the application to the modelling and fabrication process. The focus of this paper is the study of a typical Chinese joint structure, the dou gong. The precedent case study and the components of the dou gong are reviewed and analysed. Then the digital representation and fabrication processes that have been employed are demonstrated. Practical problems were found in this process and modifications were consequently made. At the end of the paper, we discuss the achievements and benefits that arise from this investigation, and potential applications in practice. Conclusions from work presented in this paper and for the broader research are drawn respectively. Significant prospective work is suggested.

summary The paper presents the geometrical investigation of a three-dimensional dovetail joint that can lead (timber) frame construction to more than two-dimensional frames; the creation of timber construction with timber members meeting at irregular angles can be shown to be feasible, simplifying overall construction. Traditional joints in timber construction usually work only in two dimensions, in other words in planar surfaces, resulting thus in complicated assemblies in three-dimensions. Stemming from traditional timber dovetail joints, the universal joint under investigation is produced under revolution of the geometry of a dovetail fastener through its middle axis. The resulting concave disk can connect timber elements under irregular angles, without the need for the structural members to lie in the same plane. The joint works due to friction between members rather than using any other element of bonding, allowing for the assembly of joints and structural members with no specialized tools. The paper explores the geometric constraints and degrees of freedom that such a disk creates in timber construction, and consequently in similar linear construction systems.

summary Tangle Jungle was an experiment in an alternative method of design and making for the digital age. The aim of the project was to interpret and reenact traditional craftmanship through today's digital tools. For a particular study on the subject, we looked at the theory and works of William Morris. Morris had an exceptional taste for medieval art and produced, among other things, hand-woven carpets that are still studied today. Morris reinvented the art of his time by reviving pre-industrial modes of production and designs. Today, the digital age is experiencing a similar paradigm shift. Digital tools already work, in many instances, as a direct extension of the hands of a new breed of digital artisan makers. It is possible to assess that the digital is getting closer to Morris's notion of craftsmanship. Tangle Jungle became a testing ground for this historical connection, bringing forth the question, can we redefine our own digital craftsmanship as a form of digitally reenacted Gothic revival?

summary This paper describes a method for design and fabrication of funicular structures from discrete precast concrete components. It has a critical look over traditional casting techniques and proposes a new methodology to fabricate a flexible formwork. The design process is engaged with a thorough series of analytical models and employs digital computation techniques to test their structural efficiency. Scripting, modeling and prototyping have been integrated to investigate several case studies through which a set of criteria was developed. Digital modeling tries to keep a limited number of varied components that have certain conditions at joints and flexible in other parts. This variation helps to meet the structural criterion and the flexibility of formwork results the efficiency of fabrication.

summary Buildings have to respond to changes in order to remain functional. Traditional means to adapt to change are to design relatively static shells that can accommodate to some degree changes. Recently a number of technologies have come into existence that extend the capacity of buildings to change in a more autonomous way. Such buildings are responsive buildings. In this paper we deal with a special case of such responsive buildings: interactive buildings. Interactive buildings engage in a dialogue with the user and have an internal representation of the user. Interactive buildings can display a variety of 'styles' how they interact with people - these are known as attitudes. As a building may go through a number of attitudes during the interaction with the user, control structures are necessary to determine this change. The mechanisms for these changes are the 'psychology' of the building.

summary "The introduction of digital tools in the production of architecture undoubtedly constitutes the main force behind contemporary architectural innovation. In addition, the interaction of digital technologies with analog craft manufacturing -a rather unexplored field of study- suggests a wide range of novel opportunities. This research focuses on developing a framework for deploying digital design techniques to the production of bricks under vernacular technology as a medium of achieving geometrical variations and functional complexity in domestic-scale projects. Solid clay bricks are embedded in traditional ceramic-construction culture. Thus, this investigation faces the challenges of making a feasible innovative system in a country where digital fabrication is not an economically viable option, and engaging a design that can be easily implemented with current hand-labour. Consequently, the new bricks would be massively introduced in the construction market, allowing novel formal and functional possibilities for designers.
