summary Architecture took an evolutionary context over time, where designers were interested in finding pragmatic spontaneous appropriate solutions and met the needs of people in urban and architectural spaces. Whereas, in modern architecture an intense and varied competition happens between architects through various currents of thoughts , schools and movements, however, that creativity was the ultimate goal , and a the same time we find that every architect distinguishes himself individually or collectively through tools of architectural expression and design representation adopting a school of thought, using , for example, the leaves of various sizes and diverse technical drawing tools to accurately show that he can be read by professionals or craftsmen outside the geographical scope to which it belongs .With the rapid technological development which accompanied the digital craft in the contemporary world , The digital craft summed up time, distance and tools , so they gave the concept more appropriate accuracy , as virtualization has become the most effective tool for Architecture To reach the ideal and typical results at the practical level, or pure research. At the level of residential design and on the grounds that housing plays an important role in the government policies and given that housing is a basic unit common to all urban communities on earth , the use of different programs to show its typicality in two dimensions or in the third dimension - for example, using software "AutoCAD " " 3D Max " , " ArchiCAD " ... etc. - gave virtualisation smart, creative and beautiful forms which lead to better understand the used /or to be used residential spaces, and thus the conclusion that the life system of dwelling under design or under study , as can specifically recognize spatial structure in housing design - using digital software applying "Space Syntax" for example - in the shadow of slowly growing digital and creative development with the help of high-speed computers . the morphological structure of the dwelling is considered to be the most important contemporary residential designs Investigation through which the researcher in this area aims to understand the various behavioral relations and social structures within the projected residential area, using Space Syntax techniques. Through the structural morphology of dwellings can be inferred quality networks, levels of connectivity and depth and places of openness or closure within the dwelling under study, or under design. How, then, have intelligently contributed this digital craft to the perception of those spatial fixtures ? The aim of this research is to apply an appropriate program in the field of vernacular residential design and notably Space syntax which relate to the understanding and analysis of spatial structures, and also demonstrate its role at the morphological and spatial structure aspects, and prove how effective it helps to understand the social logic of domestic space through social individual/collective relationships and behaviors projected on the spatial configurations of dwellings. The answer to the issue raised above and at the methodological aspect, the study discussed the application of space syntax techniques on the subject. The findings tend to prove the efficiency by comparing samples of Berber vernacular domestic spaces from the Mzab, the Aures and Kabilya in Algeria, and has also led to ascertain the intelligibility of space syntax techniques in reading the differences between the behaviors in domestic spaces in different areas of the sample through long periods of time .

summary The conference logo is a bird’s eye view of spiral stairs that join and separate – an homage to the famous double spiral staircase in Graz, a tourist attraction of this city and a must-see for any architecturally minded visitor. Carved out of limestone, the medieval construction of the original is a daring feat of masonry as well as a symbolic gesture. The design speaks of separation and reconciliation: The paths of two people that climb the double spiral stairs separate and then meet again at each platform. The relationship between architectural design and the growing digital repertoire of tools and possibilities seems to undergo similar cycles of attraction and rejection: enthusiasm about digital innovations – whether in Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, Energy Design, Robotic Fabrication, the many Dimensions of BIM or, as right now, in AI and Machine Learning – is typically followed by a certain disillusionment and a realization that the promises were somewhat overblown. But a turn away from these digital innovations can only be temporary. In our call for papers we refer to the first and second ‘digital turns’, a term Mario Carpo coined. Yes, it’s a bit of a pun, but you could indeed see these digital turns in our logo as well. Carpo would probably agree that design and the digital have become inseparably intertwined. While they may be circling in different directions, an innovative rejoinder is always just around the corner. The theme of the conference asked participants to re-consider the relationship between Design and the Digital. The notion of a cycle is already present in the syllable “re”. Indeed, 20 years earlier, in 2003, we held an ECAADE conference in Graz simply under the title “Digital Design” and our re-using – or is it re-cycling? – the theme can be seen as the completion of one of those cycles described above: One level up, we meet again, we’ve come full circle. The question of the relationship between Design and the Digital is still in flux, still worthy of renewed consideration. There is a historical notion implicit in the theme. To reconsider something, one needs to take a step back, to look into the past as well as into the future. Indeed, at this conference we wanted to take a longer view, something not done often enough in the fast-paced world of digital technology. Carefully considering one’s past can be a source of inspiration. In fact, the double spiral stair that inspired our conference logo also inspired many architects through the ages. Konrad Wachsmann, for example, is said to have come up with his famous Grapevine assembly system based on this double spiral stair and its intricate joinery. More recently, Rem Koolhaas deemed the double spiral staircase in Graz important enough to include a detailed model of it in his “elements of architecture” exhibition at the Venice Biennale in 2014. Our interpretation of the stair is a typically digital one, you might say. First of all: it’s a rendering of a virtual model; it only exists inside a computer. Secondly, this virtual model isn’t true to the original. Instead, it does what the digital has made so easy to do: it exaggerates. Where the original has just two spiral stairs that separate and join, our model consists of countless stairs that are joined in this way. We see only a part of the model, but the stairs appear to continue in all directions. The implication is of an endless field of spiral stairs. As the 3D model was generated with a parametric script, it would be very easy to change all parameters of it – including the number of stairs that make it up. Everyone at this conference is familiar with the concept of parametric design: it makes generating models of seemingly endless amounts of connected spiral stairs really easy. Although, of course, if we’re too literal about the term ‘endless’, generating our stair model will eventually crash even the most advanced computers. We know that, too. – That's another truth about the Digital: it makes a promise of infinity, which, in the end, it can’t keep. And even if it could: what’s the point of just adding more of the same: more variations, more options, more possible ways to get lost? Doesn’t the original double spiral staircase contain all those derivatives already? Don’t we know that ‘more’ isn’t necessarily better? In the original double spiral stair the happy end is guaranteed: the lovers’ paths meet at the top as well as when they exit the building. Therefore, the stair is also colloquially known as the Busserlstiege (the kissing stair) or the Versöhnungsstiege (reconciliation stair). In our digitally enhanced version, this outcome is no longer clear: we can choose between multiple directions at each level and we risk losing sight of the one we were with. This is also emblematic of our field of research. eCAADe was founded to promote “good practice and sharing information in relation to the use of computers in research and education in architecture and related professions” (see ecaade.org). That may have seemed a straightforward proposition forty years ago, when the association was founded. A look at the breadth and depth of research topics presented and discussed at this conference (and as a consequence in this book, for which you’re reading the editorial) shows how the field has developed over these forty years. There are sessions on Digital Design Education, on Digital Fabrication, on Virtual Reality, on Virtual Heritage, on Generative Design and Machine Learning, on Digital Cities, on Simulation and Digital Twins, on BIM, on Sustainability, on Circular Design, on Design Theory and on Digital Design Experimentations. We hope you will find what you’re looking for in this book and at the conference – and maybe even more than that: surprising turns and happy encounters between Design and the Digital.

summary Rethinking Comprehensive Design—the 19th International Conference on Computer-Aided Architectural Design Research in Asia (CAADRIA 2014)—emphasises a cross-disciplinary context to challenge the mainstream culture of computational design in architecture. It aims to (re)explore the potential of computational design methods and technologies in architecture from a holistic perspective. The conference provides an international forum where academics and practitioners share their novel research development and reflection for defining the future of computation in architectural design. Hosted by the Department of Design, Engineering and Management at the Kyoto Institute of Technology, CAADRIA 2014 presents 88 peer-reviewed full papers from all over the world. These high-quality research papers are complimented by 34 short work-in-progress papers submitted for the poster session of the conference. The conference proceedings were produced by a motivated team of volunteers from the CAADRIA community through an extensive collaboration. The 88 full papers rigorously double-blind reviewed by the dedicated International Review Committee (consisting of 74 experts), testify to CAADRIA’s highly respectable international standing. Call for abstracts sent out in July 2013 attracted 298 submissions. They were initially reviewed by the Paper Selection Committee who accepted 198 abstracts for further development. Of these, 118 full papers were eventually submitted in the final stage. Each submitted paper was then assessed by at least two members of the International Review Committee. Following the reviewers’ recommendations, 91 papers were accepted by the conference, of which 88 are included in this volume and for presentation in CAADRIA 2014. Collectively, these 88 papers define Rethinking Comprehensive Design in terms of the following research streams: Shape Studies; User Participation in Design; Human-Computer Interaction; Digital Fabrication and Construction; Computational Design Analysis; New Digital Design Concepts and Strategies; Practice-Based and Interdisciplinary Computational Design Research; Collaborative and Collective Design; Generative, Parametric and Evolutionary Design; Design Cognition and Creativity; Virtual / Augmented Reality and Interactive Environments; Computational Design Research and Education; and Theory, Philosophy and Methodology of Computational Design Research. summary This paper explores a new approach in the architectural design process aiming to construct Makkah's architectural identity. Makkah, which is a city of unique sacred values, has been losing its battle to preserve it heritage buildings. Traditional districts with their heritage buildings have been cleared in order to construct skyscrapers to accommodate the increasing number of pilgrims. While some argue for preserving heritage buildings others insist in building more skyscrapers. Within these conflicting views, architects and urban designers use CAD software to document heritage buildings without informing the future architectural design process. This paper argues for adopting digital architecture as an approach for preserving the architectural heritage of Makkah by studying heritage buildings as systems that can be digitally represented in virtual world. This goes beyond the physical representation of heritage artefacts to investigate in depth the logic that guide the design process. The roushan, which is one of the unique heritage artefacts in Makkan's architecture can be an interface between reality and the virtual environment in the design process. This goes behind modeling the roushan, to employ the principle of virtual representation in the design process. The digital representation of heritage becomes the realm for research transforming the virtual into reality. The hope is to produce an architecture that is related to its local heritage, contemporary in design and responsive to its environment, as well as to advocate principles, references and techniques at the core of the design process, in an educational and professional context. In broader picture the goal is to achieve a city that is responsive to human activities adapted to changes, sustainable in physical forms and social relations and above all unique in design and identity.

summary Design is one of the basic skills of every engineer. However until now design is only seen as a core course in Architecture studies and lately in Industrial Engineering studies. This paper reports about the development of a design course for all departments of a typical technical university. After a short overview of design teaching tradition, an inventory is presented of the different interpretation of design by the various departments. The course development is presented over two periods: 2012-2014, and 2014-2015. In between a major change was conducted. The course learning goals and student evaluations are presented. In the discussion we reflect on fundamental and practical problems that occur in design teaching for such a wide audience. Finally we draw conclusions on the changing role of design what is needed to give design the same status as mathematics in a technical curriculum.

title No Fear of Ridicule - deploying plaything technology for credible representations of urban landscape

summary As technology affine urban landscape architects, working in Asian mega cities, we conduct research on urbanity beyond prime premises and nice neighbourhoods with maximum tourist potential. We roam through crowded and super narrow, widely informal city layouts, where we apply our digital fieldwork equipment and conduct design work. In these places we test low cost cameras and camera drones, tools that had been developed as documentation equipment for outdoor sportspersons respectively playthings for all the world. Technically limited, if not insufficient and physically labile, these basic tools help us to experiment in the field without problematic loss risks and without scaring people on site. In this paper, we describe a method of on-site data and image gathering, which allows the processing of 3D models of labyrinthine informal city spaces. The result of our study is a three-dimensional puzzle of sufficient precision, making a widely inaccessible and undocumented piece of city terrain visible, understandable and designable.

summary The need for increased automation of the AEC sector has been extensively documented within the architectural discipline over recent years. Far beyond economic perspectives, current advances in technology offer an increased and more direct implementation of sustainable materials. Within this research, the potential for the re-use of material with low embodied energy within automated construction will be examined. Herefore, Remote Material Deposition (RDM, firstly described in Dörfler et al., 2014) is utilized as main fabrication method, deploying varying compositions of local building debris, lime mortar, and sand, via a throwing arm. This research explores a method of continuous verification of material deployment and removal of material oversaturation to guarantee accuracy. Herefore, all instances of the robot ecology are in direct communication with one another and the user for verification, adaptation, and information. The proposed framework is examined through experimentation by designing, building, and implementing an inter-communicative network of bespoke semi-autonomous robots with all proposed parts of the system.

title Approximating Computational Fluid Dynamics for Generative Tall Building Design

summary Background literature review, methodology, results, and analysis are presented for a novel approach to approximating wind pressure on tall buildings for the application of generative design exploration and optimisation.The predictions are approximations of time-averaged computational fluid dynamics (CFD) data with the aim of maintaining simulation accuracy but with improved speed.This is achieved through the use of a back-propagation artificial neural network (ANN) with vertex-based shape features as input and pressure as output.The training set consists of 600 procedurally generated tall building models, and the test set of 10 real building models; for all models in both sets, a feature vector is calculated for every vertex. Over the test set, mean absolute errors against the basis CFD are 1.99–4.44% (_:2.10–5.09%) with an on-line process time of 14.72–809.98s (0.028s/sample). Studies are also included on feature sensitivity, training set size, and comparison of CFD against prediction times. Results indicate that prediction time is only dependent on the number of test model vertices, and is therefore invariant to basis CFD time.

summary This paper examines how designers can invigorate designs with a sense of liveliness and indeterminacy through manipulation of pliable materials. Two approaches to material manipulation are defined and juxtaposed in the paper: The control associated with Frei Otto's elegantly tensioned membranes and the noise associated with Sigurd Lewerentz's intensely material brick walls. These historical approaches become pertinent in relation to current opportunities offered by material simulation software in architecture. Simulation may be used to increase control over the materialization of design, but is at the same time a way to introduce the noise of real-time, real-world experiments into digital design. The paper presents this discussion in parallel with documentation of the research project 'Erratic', a recent installation carried out by the authors' practice Norell/Rodhe. Constructed from polyurethane cold foam, the project combines analogue experiments with digital simulations to target architectural qualities like mass, figuration and relief.

Building on these projects, we present a novel and transferable process for the robotic fabrication of bespoke timber subassemblies made of off-the-shelf standard timber elements. A nonstandard timber structure (Figure 2), consisting of four bespoke subassemblies: three vertical supports and a Zollinger (Allen 1999) roof structure, acts as the case study for the research and validates the feasibility of the proposed process.

summary As the term suggests, a pseudoperspective involves performing a false perspective, and is the result of combining two different projective systems: Diedric Orthogonal System with the Central perspective System. Despite its heterodox character, this nifty graphic resource is used since the invention of perspective. With the digital graphics development of pseudo-perspectives currently allows new expressive possibilities. In this paper an academic exercise conducted with students from a curriculum during the first year of a career in architecture is presented. This work consisted of performing a photomontage from an elevation or vertical section.

summary Typical horizontal building types, open spaces, and human activities have yet to competently overcome or adapt to the constraints of vertically-oriented dense urban environments. Designing the built environment to the oblique, or more than two axes at once, is a required strategy for the future of city planning, the advancement of body-space interaction in architecture, and to reinforce the interconnectedness of the natural environment with human activities. With the development and increasing use of 3D modeling software, parametric and generative design processes, and the progressive investigation of complex geometry, it is likely that the oblique will be envisioned more and more as a functional architectural device. This research investigates the tessellation of minimal surface geometry to achieve a folded, multi-use surface capable of connecting disparate urban program and which can enable a city to offer amenities that are typically available in horizontally-oriented suburbs. The geometric family of the helicoid is found as the optimal formal generator because of its ability to create a continuous surface while allowing for both horizontal and vertical circulation.

summary Biomimicry and computational design are two growing fields of research and practice in architecture for their potential in performative and sustainable design, among many other benefits. Cooling loads are posing serious energy problems in hot climatic cities as in Cairo and Alexandria. Attempting to solve these problems, this research turned to botanical inspirations for ideas in order to improve thermoregulation of the building skin. One of these ideas was chosen and implemented using computational software in the design of a parametric vertical shading screen for a typical office room in Cairo. The challenge was to minimize cooling loads as much as possible without compromising daylight requirements. An evolutionary solver was used to optimize results and environmental simulations were performed before and after the proposed screen to assess its performance and evaluate this biomimetic-computational approach to design.

summary Creativity with its various processes is involved in all design actions. Creativity used in architectural design is different than creativity in other domains. However, creativity in general with its related cognition processes has no general theory. This research proposes certain activities of initial architectural design phases in which the role of activity is important. The research proceeds to present a case study of two architectural design studios in which a VR environment is employed in order to investigate the effect of VR use on the creativity in those initial design phases. The research applies a methodology of qualitative and quantitative analysis. Various architectural design factors are neutralized to overcome the influence generated from human factors variation and design thinking prejudice on architectural designing and the associated creativities.

summary One of the emerging multidisciplinary contemporary art practices is interactive installation art, which is concerned with constructing a temporary artistic environment that is digital, responsive and engaging. It is usually displayed within existing architectural context whether indoor in a gallery space or outdoor in a public space. Recent examples of such art projects show that interactivity and illusion are effectively present and highly influential in the perception and memory of the place. A digital display on a building façade can remain attached to the history of the site in the spectator’s memory even after the display is removed. An interactive space that involves body response and emotional sensory interaction can determine the narrative perceived from the experience. These trends seemingly bring together the physical context and the digital space to contain the spectator. The two mediums are merged to provide a new genre of space, hence a new mode of perception where the art space mediates people’s movement and overlay the context with new meanings. Multiple backgrounds are involved in the creative process of interactive installation art, all of which involve examining various concepts through artistic engagement with temporary spaces. Here, particularly because of interactivity and immerseveness, the spectator becomes part of the performance (the subject); with his moving and reacting he activates the narrative and probably gives it its shape. This paper aims to explore the potentials of the digital spatial display to enhance or weaken our sense of belonging to the surrounding environments while creating an illusionary space within the real physical one. It also aims to discuss how this influence would affect the memory of the mixed experience; the installation being digital, temporary and illusive and the space being physical, permanent and real. What happens to the “spectator” when contained by the digital-interactive and the physical medium(s)?. In order to unfold the mentioned questions, the study uses theories of perception and performance reflected on live case studies of recent art projects where the researcher becomes a member of the audience and an observer at the same time in order to trace the journey inside this new medium. In an era where time is being more difficult to grasp and identities of visual culture is becoming more difficult to define, temporary responsive environments can provide some openings where space becomes durational, yet, influential, and where people’s movements become more meaningful in the visual terrain.

summary The virtual teams are largely encouraged by the recent technological devices supporting different-place collaboration and suggest today new forms of organization. This one is geographically dispersed and regroups all the competencies required for the work to be done. In such a context, trust is essential to guarantee the performance of team. It is indeed a necessary component for initiating the work relationship and to overcome the inherent risk. The capacity of the groups to communicate about the objectives and strategies as well as to readjust them according to the context (i.e. reflexivity) is another element important for the group's performance. This article suggests analyzing these notions of trust and reflexivity within virtual teams in the context of an academic experiment where students are geographically dispersed and have to produce an architectural project.

summary Education and Research in Computer Aided Architectural Design in Europe faces many urgent tasks. Among the Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC)international scientific societies, only few researches systematically investigate on how to integrate the design solutions with Health and Safety (HS) planning measures, enhancing a collaborative “fusion” of all involved actors in Design and Construction decision making. Process automation cannot be enhanced until design/management tools, such as Building Information Models, can rely only on entities formalised "per se" geometrical items fulfilled by isolated-object specific information. To face complex problems, BIM models should be able to implement and manipulate multiple sets of entities, qualified by clearly established relationships, belonging to organically structured and oriented (sub-) systems. This paper reports on an early stage research project, focused on the identification of operative rules for Health and Safety design. Implementation on the unique case study of Palazzo della Civiltà Italiana functional refurbishment faces two main objectives: one, more pragmatic, is concerned with boostingworkers education about non-standard operative tasks, by means of accurate ad-hoc construction narrative visualisation; another one, more challenging and theoretically complex, consists in modelling "judgment-based" rules, aimed at supporting automated reasoning in Safety Design.

summary This paper reflects a collaborative, research led design project, aiming to explore the potentials offered by incorporating parametric / generative tools and performative lighting simulation software in order to design and fabricate a small pavilion for the School of Architecture. The Deceptive Landscape pavilion was designed in the framework of a masters level, research led, and collaborative design studio. During its intense 12 weeks schedule, student teams were asked to explore and apply generative / parametric tools such as Rhino and Grasshopper, in order to design and later construct a small pavilion, with a theme of their choice. In addition, each team was asked to optimise their design proposal by embedding environmental software plug-ins (e.g. DIVA for Rhino) in their design process, thereby aiming to re-inform their parametric models and set performance targets. Finally each team was expected to propose a file to factory fabrication technique, following all constrains of a limited, predetermined budget. The most convincing and consistent proposal, was then chosen for fabrication. The finalised project serves as verification of the effectiveness of the design system and teaching methods used.
