summary Visualizations are playing an important role in the formulation and communication of design concepts. Various types of visualizations are being used in the planning process for the presentation of architectural design projects and planning scenarios. This study examines the process of working with visualizations in planning in Norway, and how it is being used as a means to communicate information. Two types of pilot studies were conducted. The first was a survey that sought to find out what visualization is being used by planners in Norway today. The second study was conducted in the Virtual Reality laboratory at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences and explored how different methods of visualization is being understood and experienced by lay people and professionals. Despite the fact that 2D visualizations (e.g. maps, floor plans, sections, elevations) and BIM visualizations can prove to be less engaging and understandable compared to 3D realistic model visualizations, the findings indicates that the use of mixed methods can provide a better overall understanding of a project.

summary When thinking about the future vision of a city, having in mind recent development in digital technologies and digital design tools we are inclined to expect new building structures which incorporate this technology to better help us manage the complexity of life, and to simplify our daily lives and tasks. The idea behind this research paper lies in design of such structures, which could be put inside an urban context and engage in creating a built environment that can add more to the quality of life. For us Interactive architecture is architecture that is responsive, flexible, changing, always moving and adapting to the needs of today. The world is becoming more dynamic, society is constantly changing and the new needs it develops need to be accommodated. As a result architecture has to follow. Spaces have to become more adaptive, responsive and nature concerned, while having the ability for metamorphosis, flexibility and interactivity. Taken as a starting point of this idea is a specific module from graduation project in 2014 "The Unexpected city", where it was possible to test out first ideas about interactive and flexible objects in an urban environment.

summary The virtual teams are largely encouraged by the recent technological devices supporting different-place collaboration and suggest today new forms of organization. This one is geographically dispersed and regroups all the competencies required for the work to be done. In such a context, trust is essential to guarantee the performance of team. It is indeed a necessary component for initiating the work relationship and to overcome the inherent risk. The capacity of the groups to communicate about the objectives and strategies as well as to readjust them according to the context (i.e. reflexivity) is another element important for the group's performance. This article suggests analyzing these notions of trust and reflexivity within virtual teams in the context of an academic experiment where students are geographically dispersed and have to produce an architectural project.

summary The conference logo is a bird’s eye view of spiral stairs that join and separate – an homage to the famous double spiral staircase in Graz, a tourist attraction of this city and a must-see for any architecturally minded visitor. Carved out of limestone, the medieval construction of the original is a daring feat of masonry as well as a symbolic gesture. The design speaks of separation and reconciliation: The paths of two people that climb the double spiral stairs separate and then meet again at each platform. The relationship between architectural design and the growing digital repertoire of tools and possibilities seems to undergo similar cycles of attraction and rejection: enthusiasm about digital innovations – whether in Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, Energy Design, Robotic Fabrication, the many Dimensions of BIM or, as right now, in AI and Machine Learning – is typically followed by a certain disillusionment and a realization that the promises were somewhat overblown. But a turn away from these digital innovations can only be temporary. In our call for papers we refer to the first and second ‘digital turns’, a term Mario Carpo coined. Yes, it’s a bit of a pun, but you could indeed see these digital turns in our logo as well. Carpo would probably agree that design and the digital have become inseparably intertwined. While they may be circling in different directions, an innovative rejoinder is always just around the corner. The theme of the conference asked participants to re-consider the relationship between Design and the Digital. The notion of a cycle is already present in the syllable “re”. Indeed, 20 years earlier, in 2003, we held an ECAADE conference in Graz simply under the title “Digital Design” and our re-using – or is it re-cycling? – the theme can be seen as the completion of one of those cycles described above: One level up, we meet again, we’ve come full circle. The question of the relationship between Design and the Digital is still in flux, still worthy of renewed consideration. There is a historical notion implicit in the theme. To reconsider something, one needs to take a step back, to look into the past as well as into the future. Indeed, at this conference we wanted to take a longer view, something not done often enough in the fast-paced world of digital technology. Carefully considering one’s past can be a source of inspiration. In fact, the double spiral stair that inspired our conference logo also inspired many architects through the ages. Konrad Wachsmann, for example, is said to have come up with his famous Grapevine assembly system based on this double spiral stair and its intricate joinery. More recently, Rem Koolhaas deemed the double spiral staircase in Graz important enough to include a detailed model of it in his “elements of architecture” exhibition at the Venice Biennale in 2014. Our interpretation of the stair is a typically digital one, you might say. First of all: it’s a rendering of a virtual model; it only exists inside a computer. Secondly, this virtual model isn’t true to the original. Instead, it does what the digital has made so easy to do: it exaggerates. Where the original has just two spiral stairs that separate and join, our model consists of countless stairs that are joined in this way. We see only a part of the model, but the stairs appear to continue in all directions. The implication is of an endless field of spiral stairs. As the 3D model was generated with a parametric script, it would be very easy to change all parameters of it – including the number of stairs that make it up. Everyone at this conference is familiar with the concept of parametric design: it makes generating models of seemingly endless amounts of connected spiral stairs really easy. Although, of course, if we’re too literal about the term ‘endless’, generating our stair model will eventually crash even the most advanced computers. We know that, too. – That's another truth about the Digital: it makes a promise of infinity, which, in the end, it can’t keep. And even if it could: what’s the point of just adding more of the same: more variations, more options, more possible ways to get lost? Doesn’t the original double spiral staircase contain all those derivatives already? Don’t we know that ‘more’ isn’t necessarily better? In the original double spiral stair the happy end is guaranteed: the lovers’ paths meet at the top as well as when they exit the building. Therefore, the stair is also colloquially known as the Busserlstiege (the kissing stair) or the Versöhnungsstiege (reconciliation stair). In our digitally enhanced version, this outcome is no longer clear: we can choose between multiple directions at each level and we risk losing sight of the one we were with. This is also emblematic of our field of research. eCAADe was founded to promote “good practice and sharing information in relation to the use of computers in research and education in architecture and related professions” (see ecaade.org). That may have seemed a straightforward proposition forty years ago, when the association was founded. A look at the breadth and depth of research topics presented and discussed at this conference (and as a consequence in this book, for which you’re reading the editorial) shows how the field has developed over these forty years. There are sessions on Digital Design Education, on Digital Fabrication, on Virtual Reality, on Virtual Heritage, on Generative Design and Machine Learning, on Digital Cities, on Simulation and Digital Twins, on BIM, on Sustainability, on Circular Design, on Design Theory and on Digital Design Experimentations. title Crafting the Virtual Sensory Environment: building performance simulation visualization as an enabler for creating sensory environments

summary The sensory virtual environment is defined as a cognitive method leading to a mental model of potential value in gaining insights of how building spaces may perform to enhance the sensory experience of occupants. For architects, creating a sensory and experiential space is the holy grail of design endeavours. So far, the results of the experiential and sensory success of buildings are dependent on the architects’ own experience and judgment of materials and compositions within the space. Currently the use of tools such as 3D Max provides an ocular experience of the crafted virtual space, rarely giving indications of daylight and possible sensory experiences of the indoor thermal and acoustic conditions. In practice testing the thermal, daylight and other environmental performances of buildings at design stage is within the remit of building services consultants for conformity regulatory checks, and is dominated by extensive 2D (graphs) information exchanges. There is a need to include other formats of visual information exchanges to facilitate decisions on sustainable buildings and to achieve performing sensory environments This paper presents an exploration of endeavours to test the virtual sensory space through visualizations of building performance and aims to provide recommendations on how to fuse endeavours to disseminate knowledge within the design team while creating an information exchange mechanism that captures experts’ explicit and tacit knowledge. Case studies will be presented on how building performance simulation tools are used to provide matrices of relations to indicate the building performance, thermal comfort, daylight and natural ventilation and were used as an aid for architectural design decisions to create sensory environments.

The increasingly efficient and more specialized digital applications allow the designers a whole range of facilities providing drawing commands and changes very easy to use, which puts 3D physical model in a less priority or being useless. This paper studies how to minimize This gap by teaching students that 3D physical models are not only the outer physical result of the design but it could be also the way to learn the architectural relationships and values in architectural design, where 3D physical models techniques now had been updated and related in a way to the digital 3D models and CAD applications.

summary The merits and potential of Building Information Modelling (BIM) have been promoted for several years; however, its widespread adoption and development may potentially stagnate on account of a technical skills shortage, with insufficient personnel having the capabilities to successfully deliver projects. This shortfall covers all aspects of BIM, and building performance and life cycle analysis in particular. Programmes such as Ecotect, Revit, Green Building Studio, and Project Vasari, have transformed data capture and analysis, enabling architects and systems engineers to visualise site analyses and to test preliminary designs. As BIM is a relatively new process which continues to develop rapidly, Higher Education Institutions need to respond to currency and change while striving to provide graduates with the advanced skills to satisfy the needs of the building industry. This work presents a case study of the application of Autodesk's Building Performance Analysis Certificate (BPAC) as a driver for learning in support of the integration of BIM into the architectural curriculum.

summary This paper aims to investigate the ways in which the traditional processes of glassblowing techniques could be incorporated with contemporary generative design processes in the realization of new novel architectural systems. Pedagogical issues on how such prototyping processes could be better integrated within architectural education are also discussed. With the use of algorithmic design methodology to generate/visualize the components assembled in multitudes and digital fabrication machineries to produce the necessary moulds/jigs/tools/connection joints, a series of 5 different glass prototypes have been actualized at the scale of 1:1 or otherwise. The work is the direct outcome of a new programme founded and directed by the author as part of the Architectural Association (AA) School of Architecture‘s Visiting School in 2013. Part 1 briefly introduces the specific agenda and how the corresponding structure of the programme is designed to facilitate the glass research work done concurrently at the digital fabrication laboratory and glassblowing studio. Part 2 would systematically discuss in detail the design of each of the 5 main glass prototypes made, presented alongside photographs and diagrams to illustrate the prototypes’ respective assembly and fabrication logics. Part 3 would evaluate the work done and project plans for the next iteration of the research in 2014.

summary When working on urban planning projects there are usually multiple aspects to consider. Often these aspects are contradictory and it is not possible to choose one over the other; instead, they each need to be fulfilled as well as possible. Planners typically draw on past experience when subjectively prioritising which aspects to consider with which degree of importance for their planning concepts. This practice, although understandable, places power and authority in the hands of people who have varying degrees of expertise, which means that the best possible solution is not always found, because it is either not sought or the problem is regarded as being too complex for human capabilities. To improve this situation, the project presented here shows the potential of multi-criteria optimisation algorithms using the example of a new housing layout for an urban block. In addition it is shown, how Self-Organizing-Maps can be used to visualise multi-dimensional solution spaces in an easy analysable and comprehensible form.

summary The digital age is facilitating an ever increasing trend of globalized language and culture. Environmental issues are no longer a static concept as climate change and population growth force concepts of adaptability. What does this mean for the academy? How do we educate students to contemplate future urban scenarios and make some organization out of this more dynamic, complex future? The following paper seeks to disseminate a spring 2014 design studio at The University of Arizona where these issues were addressed, with Mexico City as a test bed. Computation has become a vital tool in the organizational process of these complex issues and big data. Various digital tools and platforms were explored in the studio to determine which ones would be most useful in modeling, mapping, designing and processing some of the complex relationships that are present in urban environments today.

summary This paper explores a new approach in the architectural design process aiming to construct Makkah's architectural identity. Makkah, which is a city of unique sacred values, has been losing its battle to preserve it heritage buildings. Traditional districts with their heritage buildings have been cleared in order to construct skyscrapers to accommodate the increasing number of pilgrims. While some argue for preserving heritage buildings others insist in building more skyscrapers. Within these conflicting views, architects and urban designers use CAD software to document heritage buildings without informing the future architectural design process. This paper argues for adopting digital architecture as an approach for preserving the architectural heritage of Makkah by studying heritage buildings as systems that can be digitally represented in virtual world. This goes beyond the physical representation of heritage artefacts to investigate in depth the logic that guide the design process. The roushan, which is one of the unique heritage artefacts in Makkan's architecture can be an interface between reality and the virtual environment in the design process. This goes behind modeling the roushan, to employ the principle of virtual representation in the design process. The digital representation of heritage becomes the realm for research transforming the virtual into reality. The hope is to produce an architecture that is related to its local heritage, contemporary in design and responsive to its environment, as well as to advocate principles, references and techniques at the core of the design process, in an educational and professional context. In broader picture the goal is to achieve a city that is responsive to human activities adapted to changes, sustainable in physical forms and social relations and above all unique in design and identity.

summary Visually decoding and evaluating digital 3D models in proper scale on screen from within 3D modelling software can be quite difficult due to random zoom-factors, Field of View (FOV) and eye height. Motion and interactive bodily grounded examinations are helpful factors that can be enhanced with the use of Virtual Reality (VR). The purpose of this phenomenological study is to address these difficulties of perception of scale by introducing a Virtual Reality Head Mounted Display (HMD) as an exploration tool and outlining possible ways of utilising this tool in architectural teaching. To achieve the purpose findings of perception of scale and distance; level of abstraction; navigation; and simulator sickness will be discussed in relation to architectural investigation in VR. This will be based on the experiences and findings during two workshops with architecture students qualifying their conceptual designs with the VR HMD.

summary The research in this paper focusses on how a narrative text can be the generator of an architectural drawing, or other architectural representation, such as an Architectural Virtual Environment. The drawn physical sketch has traditionally played that role. A particular approach to narrative has been important for some notable architects and their architecture. Ian Ritchie (2014), for instance, celebrates the use of poetry to describe the essential spirit of a scheme before any drawing is done. The work in the paper here describes the proposition to capture such narrative text in a systematic and structured way. We describe foundational work on how the captured narrative text has been translated into a contemporary, computer-mediated, design development environment. Different narrative accounts recalling a now demolished house form the focus case study. This case study is the vehicle through which the initial principles establishing how best to move from narrative to virtual representation are established and tested.

summary The boundaries of augmented reality in the academic field are now being explored at an ever increasing level. In this paper we present the initial findings of an educational project focusing on the use of augmented reality in the design process of an architectural student. The study seeks to evaluate the use of AR as a tool in the design stages, allowing effective exploration of spatial qualities of design projects undertaken in the studio. The learning process is guided by the exploration and detection of a design idea in both form and function, with the virtual environment providing a dynamic environment (Mantovani, 2001). This is further reflected in the constructivist theory where the learning processes use conceptual models, which are used to create incremental stages that become the platform to attain the next [Winn, 1993]. The additional benefit of augmented reality within the learning journey is the ability of the students to visually explore the architectural forms they are creating in greater depth.

summary This project sets up a design framework that promotes augmenting the human body's interactions exploring methods for merging and blending the users of physical and virtual environments, through the design of wearable devices that are embedded with sensors and actuators. This allows for haptic and visual feedback through the use of data that reflects changes in the surrounding physical environment, and visualized in the immersive Virtual Reality (VR) environment. We consider the Body Architectures project to serve as mechanisms for augmenting the body in relation to the virtual architecture. These wearable devices serve to bring a hyper-awareness to our senses, as closed-loop cybernetic systems that utilize 'digitized' biometric and environmental data through the use of 3D scanning technologies and cloud point models, virtual reality visualization, sensing technologies, and actuation. The design of Body Architectures relies on hybrid design, transdisciplinary collaborations, to explore new possibilities for wearable body architectures that evolve human-machine-environment interactions, and create hyper awareness of the temporal, atmospheric qualities that make up our experience of space, as 'sensorial envelopes' (Lally 2014).

summary Heritage specialists (architect, historian, conservator, engineer, archaeologist, etc.) often face significant problems of representation and simulation assumptions restitution of monuments. The traditional graphic means cannot fulfill all the needs which are done day in the patrimonial restitution. That is why it is necessary to consider the services that digital technology can do, and think about their use in the representation of monuments in their environment. It can also be used to restore and to preserve heritage using digital statement which allows reconstituting numerically damaged parts or disappeared from historic buildings. The virtual model of restitution constitutes a solution which makes it possible to show the restitution of the site (or part of the site) without materializing it physically, using graphical means. The virtual restitution can be materialized in the form of digital restitution in 3D, but also by the use of drawings or others graphic techniques. In this paper, we present two techniques for digital statement: The Photomodelling and 3D laser scanning, which are used in the field of modeling heritage. Then we present case studies which were carried out within the framework of our teaching activities and research at the School of Architecture of Paris La Villette (ENSAPLV).

summary This research prefaces the need for engaging with endusers in early stages of design as means to achieve higher performing designs with an increased certainty for enduser satisfaction. While the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) community has previously used virtual reality, the primary use has been for coordination and visualization of Building Information Models (BIM). This work builds upon the value of use of virtual environments in AEC processes but asks the research question "how can we better test and measure design alternatives through the integration of immersive virtual reality into our digital and physical mock up workflows? " The work is predicated on the need for design exploration through associative parametric design models, as well as, testing and measuring design alternatives with human subjects. The paper focuses on immersive virtual environments (IVEs) and presents a literature review of the use of virtual environments for integrating enduser feedback during the design stage. In a controlled pilot experiment, the authors find that human participants perform similarly in IVE and the physical environment in everyday tasks. The participants indicated they felt a strong sense of "presence" in IVE. In the future, the authors plan on using IVE to explore the integration of multi agent systems to impact building design performance and occupant satisfaction.

summary This contribution discusses the benefits of panoramic representations for projects relating to the digital-heritage, a method which allows for an effective presentation and exploration of spatial relationships in structures that no longer exist. The paper provides information on existing software options for the creation of panoramic views. State-of the art representations of this kind derived from a 3D computer model will be discussed on the basis of a case study relating to the destroyed synagogue of Jablonec in the Czech Republic.

summary Human imagination has played with the idea of an alternative technological world for years. From dystopian proposals like Neuromancer or The Matrix to more positive views like the recent Upload series, the exploration of the friction between the digital world and the physical world has entertained the imagination of our society for decades. Outside the fictional environments, the omnipresence of the internet and the development of “the cloud” are showing that the virtual world is possible and that the idea of a Metaverse is no longer part of science fiction but a very real future for human relations (Winters 2021). In line with the idea of the Metaverse, the intersection of the virtual and the physical world is being explored through the idea of Extended Realities. Technology is allowing humans to enhance their capabilities more than ever, and in fact, it has been proposed that we are entering the Augmented era (King 2014). This paper explores the opportunities and possible challenges that “Extended Architecture” has by analyzing a research project based on augmented reality as the media to explore these ideas. This project will propose a speculative approach to how the fact that in the recent future, everyone will have access to an AR device will change the way we perceive and understand our architectural environment.
