summary This paper explores hybrid digital / physical workflows in the building trades, a high-skill domain where human dexterity and craft can be augmented by the precision and repeatability of digital design and fabrication tools. In particular the paper highlights a project where historic techniques of decorative plastering are extended through live motion capture of a drawing implement, information rich visualization projected in the space of fabrication, and custom robotic tooling to generate free-form running moulds. This workflow allows designers and craftspeople to quickly explore patterns through free-hand sketch, test ideas with shaded previews, and seamlessly produce physical parts using robotic collaborators.

summary The complexity of today´s architecture solutions brings the need to integrate, in the design process, digital tools for creation, visualization, representation and evaluation of design solutions. This paper proposes the adoption of a new Virtual Reality (VR) tool, referred to as VIARmodes, to support the architectural design process with an improved communication across different specialities, towards the facilitation of the project decision process. This tool allows a complete visualization of the design, specifically useful during the detailed design phase, including the architecture design and of other engineering specialities, progressively and interactively adapting the project visualization to the information needed for each discipline. With a set of 3 different visualization modes simulated in real scale within a Virtual Environment (VE), and adopting natural human-computer interaction by using speech, the system allows a team of architect and engineers, to visualize and interact with the proposed design during a collaborative design brief. We carried a usability evaluation study with 12 architects. The study showed that the tool was perceived to be effective and its use efficient during the design process, especially during the detailed design phase.

summary The approach of contemporary architecture with urban environment has always been in perpetual evolution. The path between concept and real building has been driven since ancient times by traditional drawing tools which discretized the architect ideas into shapes. The cases studied for morphogenesis evolution, featured in the top-notch architectural firms, have been framed into two different strategies. In the first family the shape is created by the modifications of several distinct geometrical elements, which create formal complexity. In the second family of buildings the complexity is the result of very few geometrical elements, whose morphogenetic process generates complex forms. As the geometrical elements decrease in number, the draft shape must undergo a deeper process of modification to solve the functional, sustainability and structural issues.

summary Robotic Woodcraft is a transdisciplinary, arts-based investigation into robotic arms at the University for Applied Arts Vienna. Bringing together the craftsmen of the Department for Wood Technology, the geometers of the Department for Arts and Technology, the young industrial design office Lucy.D and the roboticists of the Association for Robots in Architecture, the research project explores new approaches on how to couple high-tech robotic arms with high-end wood fabrication. In the eCAADe workshop, participants are introduced to KUKA|prc (parametric robot control, Braumann and Brell-Cokcan, 2011) and shown approaches on how to create their own digital fabrication tools for customized fabrication processes involving wood.

summary Crowd Mapper is a projection-based, low-cost spatial design tool that can visualize possible pedestrian crowd behaviors associated with spatial configurations that are interactively updated by users. The method utilizes efficient representation of 2-D silhouette-based figures using agent-based computation, developed by the first author, and allows real-time editing of building designs by multiple users. The use of projection mapping technology allows architects to project multiple design schemes with three-dimensional depth and qualities. While this method still conforms to the familiar framework of architectural production standards utilizing traditional white massing models, the method has a potential to improve the existing work flow and stimulate the creativity of architects by its real-time editing capabilities.

summary Design is one of the basic skills of every engineer. However until now design is only seen as a core course in Architecture studies and lately in Industrial Engineering studies. This paper reports about the development of a design course for all departments of a typical technical university. After a short overview of design teaching tradition, an inventory is presented of the different interpretation of design by the various departments. The course development is presented over two periods: 2012-2014, and 2014-2015. In between a major change was conducted. The course learning goals and student evaluations are presented. In the discussion we reflect on fundamental and practical problems that occur in design teaching for such a wide audience. Finally we draw conclusions on the changing role of design what is needed to give design the same status as mathematics in a technical curriculum.

summary Several research projects (Gramazio et al. 2014; Willmann et al. 2015; Helm et al. 2017; Adel et al. 2018; Adel Ahmadian 2020) have investigated the use of automated assembly technologies (e.g., industrial robotic arms) for the fabrication of nonstandard timber structures. Building on these projects, we present a novel and transferable process for the robotic fabrication of bespoke timber subassemblies made of off-the-shelf standard timber elements. A nonstandard timber structure (Figure 2), consisting of four bespoke subassemblies: three vertical supports and a Zollinger (Allen 1999) roof structure, acts as the case study for the research and validates the feasibility of the proposed process.

summary Research investigating water-driven passive actuation demonstrates the potential to transform how buildings interact with their environment while avoiding the complications of conventionally powered actuation. Previous experiments evidence the possibilities of bi-layer materials (Reichert, Menges, and Correa 2015; Correa et al. 2015) and mechanical assemblies with discretely connected actuating members (Gupta et al. 2019). By leveraging changes in weather to power actuated building components these projects explore the use of smart biomaterials and responsive building systems. Though promising the implementation of these technologies requires deep engagement into material synthesis and fabrication. This paper presents the design and prototyping of a rain responsive façade system using chitosan hygroscopic films as actuators counterbalanced by programmed compliant mechanisms. Building on previous work into chitosan film assemblies this research focuses on the development of compliant mechanisms as a means of controlling movement without over-complicated rotating parts.

summary This paper presents progress towards the definition of a motion grammar for robotic stereotomy. It describes a vocabulary of motions able to generate complex forms by cutting, slicing, and/or carving 3-D blocks of material using a robotic arm and a custom made cutting tool. While shape grammars usually deal with graphical descriptions of designs, a motion grammar seeks to address the 3-D harmonic movements of machine, tool, and material substrate choreographically, suggesting motion as a generative vehicle of exploration in both designing and making. Several models and prototypes are presented and discussed.

summary Within the context of burgeoning urban populations and the rolling back of state resources, there is growing interest in ways in which citizens may participate in the creation of resilient and livable cities. This paper proposes the concept of ‘urban prototyping,’ and employs a design research methodology to develop and document the socially-sponsored design and digital fabrication of an urban shelter. We explore how we might use networked design and fabrication technologies to leverage the social capital locked within non-professional communities so that our current cities might evolve into whatever our next cities need to be.

summary In this paper we proposed a visual perception analysis to be used as a methodology for the evaluation, communication and design of places. The work was applied for the urgent challenge of re-thinking industrial areas which characterize the visual landscape of numerous urban fringes. We used simulation of the present and future of heritage as a design, evaluation and communication device. The experimental focuses on visual analysis techniques for mapping current conditions of the image of productive landscapes. In particular, 2-D digital maps, 3-D digital urban modelling, spherical panoramic pictures, cylindrical videos, Google Maps and Street View, and a post-processing work on photography and models were tested on an industrial area located in the urban fringe of Milan characterized by the diffused presence of productive landscapes.

summary C3 is a set of three interactive cubes that accommodates complex computational models of behavior, considering the relationship between them and interaction with humans. Its development mobilized a multidisciplinary team that had to deal with topics such as autopoiesis, tangible interfaces, combinations of behavioral states, interactivity and technological art. The team worked on requirement identification, design of physical structures, design of hardware and software, and assembly and test of the final solution. The cubes were shown in an international exhibition, during which a preliminary evaluation was done. The experience in having a multidisciplinary and collaborative project is commented.

summary In the period 1945-1989, the spatial transformation of Lodz was accompanied by the development of hospital facilities, which are an essential part of cultural heritage of the post-war history of the city. They represent a set of cultural, ethical and aesthetic standards of their time, the knowledge and acceptance of which may play a key role in the development of the tradition of the city. The studies and efforts made to systemize the advantages of the discussed architecture as well as its popularization are an urgent issue, due to the currently occurring intensive and, to a large extent, uncoordinated processes of transforming hospitals built after 1945. It is worth emphasizing that the post-war Lodz architecture is a kind of excellent historic record deserving common acceptance, thorough documentation and protection.

summary This paper presents the production and development of an adaptive robotically fabricated ber composite compression shell with pneumatic formwork as a case study for investigating a generative behavioral design model and an adaptive, online mode of production. The project builds off of previous research at the University of Stuttgart on lightweight ber composite structures which attempts to reduce the necessary formwork for fabrication while simultaneously incorporating structural, material and fabrication logics into an integrative computational design tool. This paper discusses the design development and fabrication work ow of the project, as well a set of strategies which were developed for online robotic programming in response to live sensor data.

summary The symbolic construction of the city’s image has two dimensions. One - internal - refers to the image of the city developed and reproduced by its residents. Another - external - is perceived by the people from the outside. In this respect the heritage has a dual role to play: it is the central focus of the visitors activities whilst at the same time being a fundamental element in the construction of local community identity. The above issues are discussed in the context of £ódŸ, which - like many other post-industrial cities - faces the problem how to handle the heritage and to create a new positive image, which is of crucial importance in constant competition for new investments.

summary The idea of an emergent or generative form based on repeating rules of development borrowed from the field of developmental biology has provided fertile ground for inspiration for architectural theory and computational design. With simple constraints developed iteratively, complex geometry and form generation can be distilled down to a list of developmental rules or functions in order to deterministically generate form. The ideas and illustrations of naturalists on organic form and developmental biology leading back to the turn of the 20th c., such as the work of D'arcy Wentworth Thompson and Ernst Haeckel, have inspired architects from Louis Sullivan all the way to contemporary generative design. This study revisits this design tradition of biomimetic geometries based on deterministic rules for the iterative development of forms based on biological analogs and models for growth. A series of semi-regular compound patterns were developed using parametric modeling and iterative rules. These geometries were then applied to surface topologies as a decorative tactile embellishment resulting in complex thermodynamic conditions. A series of physical prototypes where then developed with different high-relief patterns and pattern densities. Positive prototype geometries were then produced using stereolithography for casting plaster molds for the production molding of finished ceramic pieces for thermal analysis using digital thermography. By studying the performance of these complex geometries as physical prototypes under controlled experimentation, high-relief surfaces and the resulting thermodynamic conditions can be understood not just qualitative experience, but also quantitatively through measured performance metrics and innovative tools for analytical analysis.
