summary There has been a recent increase in the exploration of mereological systems, speculating on how digital design, assembly and reconfiguration of digital materials (Gershenfeld, 2015) enables digitally informed physical worlds that change over time. Besides opportunities for construction and design automation, there is a potential to reimagine how multiple stakeholders can participate in the computational decision-making process, using the benefits of the mass customization of logistics (Retsin, 2019). This paper presents a research-by-design project that applies a digital and discrete material system to high-rise housing in Hong Kong. The project has developed an integrated approach to design, construction, and inhabitation, using a system of discrete parts which can be assembled in various apartment configurations, to incorporate varying occupants requirements and facilitate negotiations and changes over time.

summary Applying computational optimisation tools for sport stadium designs has become common practice. However, optimizations often occur only on a macro level (analysing stadium as a whole) and not on a micro level (a view from each seat). Consequently, items on a micro level with design details like guardrails can be overlooked, leading to financial losses for operators. Hence, the research argues that every seat is encouraged to have a clear field of view to avoid financial complications. In order to address this problem the research team developed and evaluated a script that allowed importing an existing design into Rhino. Firstly, the script evaluates the view of each seat via a colour coded response system. Secondly, the designer can select the respective seat, and view the sightline from the occupant’s sightline to various spots on the field to analyse where the obstruction is occurring. This ‘binocular view’ enables the designer to evaluate blind spots from each seat prior to project completion. As the script allows the designer to automate the micro level analysis, the research arguably provides a significant improvement for stadium design by comparing the time used for a design optimisation in a conventional method with the automated one.

summary The building needs to be designed to minimize its environmental footprint and to be sufficiently adaptive to changing indoor and outdoor environmental conditions. The smart building envelope is an interactive system which is adaptive to environmental conditions by transforming its shape and functions. This is a kind of machine, not like a traditional building component, which should be based on integrated engineering design methods in addition to the exploration of formal aesthetics. As artistic genius or technical skill alone cannot not fully support the design of such a novel product, the design needs to be systemized by introducing a product development method such as prototyping in other industries. Prototyping needs to be integrated in school environment, even if it requires fundamental reconfiguration of current computer-based design studios. This paper aims at proposing a teaching methodology for educating the prototyping-based design of smart building envelope system in digital design studio. This methodology allows novice designers to operate interactions between virtual-physical models. And sketches are used to share ideas to other collaborators such as programming, mechanical operations without technical knowledge. The interactions between virtual-physical models and sketches contribute to not only complement virtual models and physical models, but also achieve high-performance of smart building envelope practically.

summary This paper aims to investigate a new methodology for analysing energy performance of buildings with complex kinetic façades. In this research, the flexible movements of individual kinetic façades in a building is determined by the façades' opening ratios and the sun path. The platform development is conducted through a visual programing environment in BIM, and the process is presented with a case study. Finally, the building's energy performance is compared with a building having static façades using whole building energy analysis tool.

summary In this study, the semantic relationship of lexicons from the architectural design domain and function words frequently used in the bioinspired design domain were quantitatively extracted. Even though bioinspired design for the architecture domain has a lot of possibility of use, it is not comparably accessible because the design supportive systems were focused on engineering design domain. Therefore, the semantic relatedness between function words from the engineering domain and lexicons from the architectural domain were quantified in order to develop a lexicon based biological system search tool. The lexicons were extracted from the texts of the International Building Code and natural language processing techniques supported the task. And the semantic relatedness between the lexicons and function words were quantified by the semantic network analysis using the WordNet system.

summary Early design phase energy modelling is used to provide the design team with feedback about the impact of various building configurations. For better energy-conscious and sustainable building design and operation, the construction of BIM data interoperability for energy performance assessment in the early design phase is important. The purpose of this study is to suggest a development of BIM data interoperability for energy performance assessment based on BIM. To archive this, the authors have investigated advantages of BIM-based energy performance assessment through comparison with traditional energy performance assessment; and suggest requirements for development of Open BIM environment such as BIM data creation and BIM data application. In addition, the authors also suggested on BIM data interoperability system and developed mapping interface.

summary The objective of the paper is to find the relationship between the visitors’ traffic flows throughout the park and the distribution of the service facilities in four different Disneyland theme parks. This paper argues that there are patterns for attraction placement of specific functions such as shops, restaurants, and attractions to manipulate the human traffic. Instead of evaluating moving time and visitors’ preferences, we focused on analysing the spatial arrangements of the thematic areas and the locations of the service facilities to understand which factors influence the traffics around attractions. To do that, an agent analysis method is used to simulate the human traffics which was then analyzed with each service capacities, theme park routes, number of restaurants, shops and attractions in each thematic areas. Our results indicate that there are shared patterns of traffic flows around attractions for four different Disneyland parks. Moreover, the traffic flows around attractions did not show significant relationship with attraction capacities themselves for all of the Disneylands.

summary The paper demonstrates a work-in-progress research on an agent-based aggregation model for architectural applications with a system of assembly based on environmental data acted as a driver for a growth mechanism. Even though the generative design and algorithms have been widely employed in the field of art and architecture, such applications tend to stay in morphological explorations. This paper examines an aggregation model based on Diffusion Limited Aggregation system incorporating solar environment analysis for global perspective of aggregation, the geometry research for lattice systems, and morphological principles of unit module in agent scale. The later part of this research paper demonstrates the potential of a design process through the “Constructed Cloud” case study, including site-specific applications and the implementation of the systematized rule set.

summary Large-scale airports such as Incheon International Airport have large-scale terminals, annex buildings, and numerous open spaces. An integrated space management system is required to manage these buildings and spaces efficiently. Thus, Incheon International Airport Corporation developed a 3D computer-aided design (CAD)-based integrated space management system. The major system development goal was to provide intuitive 3D-based visual information, thereby realizing an integrated space and asset management system that does not require expert knowledge of any specific field, such as architecture. This paper discusses the construction of the system and the problems that had to be resolved to achieve this goal.

summary This paper presents an application of a current research in soft robotics to architectural systems that present new modes of activation. The immediate architectural applications of soft actuated elements are to any surface – wall, ceiling, floor – as well as in the production of smaller autonomous living units. This augmentation of architecture that is not only actuated robotics but are also soft, add a layer of intelligence to earlier experiments in inflatable architecture. Using new polymer compounds cast with a series of internal chambers, different ranges of motion may be produced by the differential inflation of chambers with air. The resulting movement may be designed to produce a series of degrees of freedom, allowing the passage of human occupants, light, and views.

summary Despite the effort of Korean government to vitalize BIM adoption in AEC industry, the domestic adoption of BIM is still in its initial step. Particular in design field where medium and small firms being the majority, shows lower level of BIM adoption. The primary reason for this can be considered as lacking of necessities caused by uncertain benefits of BIM. Therefore, it is time to develop the objectives, quantifiable and qualitative measurement system of BIM performances. The purpose of this study is to suggest the BIM Performance Measurement System for architectural design firms. In achieving this, the authors have developed Balanced Scorecard (BSC) and validated its appropriateness by questionnaire survey with experts and performing statistical analysis. This development can be contributed to the voluntary BIM adoption by visualizing the detailed benefit of BIM and to the improvement of enterprise competitiveness by facilitating management of design process and estimating future outcome.

summary The rapid emergence of computational design tools, advanced material systems and robotic fabrication within the disciplines of architecture and construction has granted designers immense freedom in form and assembly, while retaining pronounced control over output quality throughout the entirety of the design and fabrication process. Simultaneously, the complexity inherent within these tools and processes can lead to a loss of craft though the production of methodologies, forms and artifacts left with extremely recognizable residues from tooling processes utilized during their production. This paper investigates the fecund intersection of digital technologies and handcraft through core-less carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) winding as a means of creating a new typology of digital craft blurring the line between human and machine. Through the lens of an innovative wound CFRP shelter rolyPOLY completed during the winter of 2015, this paper will show the exigencies and affordances between the realms of digital and analog methodologies of CFRP winding on large-scale structures.
