summary Public open spaces (parks, squares and other gathering places) can only be grasped from a simultaneous view of their attributes. In an ongoing Phd research project we propose to overcome the limitations of traditional-descriptive urban morphology methods in dealing with this simultaneity derived from their many shapes, functions, uses and relations within the urban structure. After developing the relations between formal attributes and intangible spatial properties, their identity and proximity may be disclosed by multivariate statistical analysis and data mining techniques. We outline a multidimensional method for the synchronic analysis and classification of the public open spaces departing from a research corpus of 126 Portuguese urban squares, whose analysis is intended to interactively (re)define it. The work done so far is presented, which comprises: (i) firming the concepts, criteria and attributes to extract; (ii) survey on theories, methods and spatial analysis tools and shortcomings identification; (iii) adaptation and/or creation of new methods and tools; (iv) creation of databases from CAD and GIS environments; (v) research on multivariate analysis, data mining and data visualization techniques.

summary This paper is about the experience to show the possibilities of the Algorithm Aided Design to a community of students and Professors that actually uses Computed Aided Design, but just for drawings, not for a full digital process. This community is hosted at Belas Artes de S?o Paulo, who in February of 2015, opened up its first Digital Fabrication Laboratory, but people there didn’t have a good idea of what it could be, beyond scale models. It shows that the new theory that supports new digital paradigms in architecture and design was the job acquired for a research group.

summary The Processing language was created to teach programming to the design, architecture, and electronic arts communities. Despite its success, Processing has limited applicability in the architectural realm, as no CAD (Computer-Aided Design) or BIM (Building Information Modeling) application supports Processing. As a result, architects that have learnt Processing are unable to use the language in the context of modern, script-based, architectural work. This work joins Processing with the world of CAD or BIM applications, creating a solution that allows architects to prototype new designs using Processing and generate results in a CAD or BIM application. To achieve this, we developed an implementation of Processing for the Rosetta programming environment, allowing Processing scripts to generate 2D and 3D models in a variety of CAD or BIM applications, such as AutoCAD, Rhinoceros3D, SketchUp, and Revit.

summary In this paper we use analysis tools from Space Syntax and objective observation of the human behaviour, to understand the impact of landmarks in the walking patterns of users of spaces. Our case study was a large exterior public open space (University Campus), in which participants could walk freely and simultaneously be tracked by several sensors. We carried Space Syntax analysis for this space, and then collected Global Positioning System (GPS) tracking information and used a mobile eye-tracking device to acquire eye gaze information. The collected data allowed us to map and analyse each subject behaviour in the public space. A more specific analysis was done to four selected landmarks that, according to the Space Syntax analysis, were the ones with higher integration values. Results indicate that landmarks with such higher integration values show also a larger count of fixations and saccades of gaze interaction.

summary Generative Design (GD) is a programming-based approach for Architecture that is becoming increasingly popular amongst architects. However, most Generative Design approaches were thought for traditional Computer Aided Design (CAD) tools and are not adequate for the Building Information Modeling (BIM) paradigm. This paper proposes a solution that extends GD to be used with BIM applications while preserving and taking advantage of its ideas. The solution will be evaluated by developing a connection between Revit, a well-known BIM tool, and Rosetta, a programming environment for GD, and by implementing the necessary programming language features that allows GD to be used in the context of BIM tool.

summary Biological life manifests in space through a large diversity of physical structures perfectly bind and identifiable in the environment. This reveals that all share a common generative design process which allows them the same physical identity in all the shapes that generates, The human ecological design process used in architecture is not able yet to reach this design identity neither the spontaneous integration associates to it. Why? Because the geometrical design process used in ecological architecture and living structures are not similar. Thus, this paper proposes, through the identification of some geometrical characteristics from the growth mechanism of living structures, a process of shape generation through shape grammar. With this generation process is possible to generate, only in geometrical terms, a large diversity of architectural models with a common identity, that reveals some geometrical characteristics of spatial integration that living structures share with the surround environment.

summary Computation, robotics and intelligent building/fabrication systems are finding themselves ever more prevalent within both practice and education. The assimilation of these new tools and methodologies within the pedagogy of architectural education continues to gain greater importance as we perceive their rapid evolution and integration within surrounding emergent fields. Through the model of an Inconvenient Studio, this paper examines the intersection between interdisciplinary collaboration, architectural robotics and computation as a means of gaining a broader understanding of how the architectural learning environment can be transformed into a self-organizing system for emergent solutions. The pedagogical prototype for an Inconvenient Studio was broadly focused on the topics of architectural robotics and responsive architectures interpreted through a range of robotic technologies and their manifestations such as biomorphic, mechanomorphic, polymorphic and amorphic robotics. Through a set of three “Memos” (Self-Organization, Autonomy, Sentience), this paper will describe how students created innovative technology-driven think tanks that produced design entrepreneurs.

summary As the global population continues to climb and environmental conditions become further unpredictable, the creation of a more robust, intelligent, adaptable yet affordable housing system will become an evermore-significant issue. Existing housing typologies find themselves lagging behind other industries such as aerospace and even automotive, lacking advanced fabrication infrastructures as well as embedded intelligent technologies that could allow for: Global interconnectivity and or manipulation, automatic software/hardware updating and physical/computational adaptability. The use of advanced tools for manufacturing resembling industrial robotics, 3D printing and as well as intelligent fabrication systems currently remains nearly non-existent. Constructed using outdated design methodologies, materials and construction techniques, the current dwelling functions merely as an enclosure for life rather then an integrated system for information, comfort and commerce. This paper questions the current typology of “house” through the rethinking of not only form and material, but by reimagining the dwelling as a whole. Rather then observing the dwelling as a static form for infrastructural permanence, this paper redefines the home as a globalized commodity, which is both physically and technologically connected and adaptable.

summary What are frontier zones in contemporary urban cities? This research project was developed in cooperation with an interdisciplinary group of researchers and students from Brazil and Germany and launched with an International Summer School in São Paulo in 2015. Its aim was to explore and invent urban spaces using the method of documentary film making as a medium to provide new insights and readings of the contemporary city. In Germany we analyzed these film productions by examining the main topics of the frontier zones in São Paulo. The method of documentary film making was once again chosen for the hermeneutic interpretation.

summary This article describes recent research on the performative, formal and aesthetic potentials of multicellular pneumatic foil-based envelope systems for lightweight, responsive building skins able to control thermal insulation and air exchange with minimal amounts of energy and mechanical components. The prototype-based research involves the use of principles from biological examples of pneus, which inform the design of physical analogue models at an architectural scale. The process entails physical-computational feedback loops wherein physical performance findings are fed into computational design models for pneumatics and membranes, as well as modified energy models, in order to advance the predictive design capacities of simulation tools in designing such systems. In this process, material agency allies with computational agency to develop novel possibilities for dynamic pneumatic envelopes.

summary Building Information Modeling (BIM) is an effective tool students can use to learn how building components work together to secure necessary structural stability in the course of construction. In Summer 2014, students enrolled in the BIM class at Texas A&M University created a 4-dimensional construction simulation model of the Museu de Arte de São Paulo (MASP) to understand how the entire building is sustained by two huge concrete beams connected with four external columns. For this class project, students analyzed the building system while creating a 3-dimensional model of the museum. They also came up with a construction sequence that would best maintain structural integrity of the building in the course of construction, and then produced a short animation video explaining the MASP construction process. This paper presents how the MASP project helped students learn a unique building system and its construction sequence.

summary The article presents the pedagogical experience of the elective course “Feel the space: design with tactile models” held at the Institute of Architecture and Urbanism of USP / S?o Carlos in 2014. From the critique of the primacy of seeing, the experimental activity proposed a housing design process with a visually impaired person, using models, plants and tactile maps. Were investigated and compared the free use of materials and processes with the use of digital fabrication - MDF plates manufactured with a laser cutting machine. As a result, it is presented the tactile representation system developed in the activity.
