title Global Perspectives on Critical Practice: Envisioning Heritage in New Landscapes
source ENVISIONING ARCHITECTURE: IMAGE, PERCEPTION AND COMMUNICATION OF HERITAGE [ISBN 978-83-7283-681-6],Lodz University of Technology, 23-26 September 2015, pp.319-328
summary This paper discusses current design and communication imaging techniques in a comparative analysis between three contemporary projects - the first, a new hotel concept in Sardinia, Italy, the second, an urban park in Mumbai, India, and the third, a new housing community in La Prusia, Nicaragua. Starting with an overview discussion problematizing the roots and current state of envisioning heritage, the paper first questions the common oversimplification of envisioning heritage as a strictly aesthetic or stylistic act. Next the paper explores the complex interplay between the design communication methods in each of the three case study projects, situating each in a critical global context. From there, the paper concludes with an expanded discussion of imaging as it relates to design thinking and communication through an examination of the techniques that were employed to graphically communicate each individual project.

title Digital Stereotomy: The Rejuvenation of Stone Masonry
source The next city - New technologies and the future of the built environment [16th International Conference CAAD Futures 2015. Sao Paulo, July 8-10, 2015. Electronic Proceedings/ ISBN 978-85-85783-53-2] Sao Paulo, Brazil, July 8-10, 2015, pp. 387-396.
summary This paper explores four factors contributing to the revival of stone masonry; aesthetics, externalities, representational tools and cutting technologies. The ongoing desirability of stone for architects and designers for aesthetic reasons; sustainability benefits of stone due to its potentially reducing hidden externalities of production and transportation; the development of representational tools in terms of advances in computer aided design, simulation, analysis and manufacturing; and advances in production technologies. This paper focuses on how digital technologies are making stone a viable material for architects and designers.

title Soft Robotics Applied to Architecture
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.acadia.2015.232
source ACADIA 2105: Computational Ecologies: Design in the Anthropocene [Proceedings of the 35th Annual Conference of the Association for Computer Aided Design in Architecture (ACADIA) ISBN 978-0-692-53726-8] Cincinnati 19-25 October, 2015), pp. 232-242
summary This paper presents an application of a current research in soft robotics to architectural systems that present new modes of activation. The immediate architectural applications of soft actuated elements are to any surface – wall, ceiling, floor – as well as in the production of smaller autonomous living units. This augmentation of architecture that is not only actuated robotics but are also soft, add a layer of intelligence to earlier experiments in inflatable architecture. Using new polymer compounds cast with a series of internal chambers, different ranges of motion may be produced by the differential inflation of chambers with air. The resulting movement may be designed to produce a series of degrees of freedom, allowing the passage of human occupants, light, and views.

title rolyPOLY - A Hybrid Prototype for Digital Techniques and Analog Craft in Architecture
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.ecaade.2016.1.631
source Herneoja, Aulikki; Toni Österlund and Piia Markkanen (eds.), Complexity & Simplicity - Proceedings of the 34th eCAADe Conference - Volume 1, University of Oulu, Oulu, Finland, 22-26 August 2016, pp. 631-638
summary The rapid emergence of computational design tools, advanced material systems and robotic fabrication within the disciplines of architecture and construction has granted designers immense freedom in form and assembly, while retaining pronounced control over output quality throughout the entirety of the design and fabrication process. Simultaneously, the complexity inherent within these tools and processes can lead to a loss of craft though the production of methodologies, forms and artifacts left with extremely recognizable residues from tooling processes utilized during their production. This paper investigates the fecund intersection of digital technologies and handcraft through core-less carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) winding as a means of creating a new typology of digital craft blurring the line between human and machine. Through the lens of an innovative wound CFRP shelter rolyPOLY completed during the winter of 2015, this paper will show the exigencies and affordances between the realms of digital and analog methodologies of CFRP winding on large-scale structures.

title Investigations in Robotic Urbanism. “Rediscovering Urban Space through Interactive, Data Driven Installations”
source SIGRADI 2015 [Proceedings of the 19th Conference of the Iberoamerican Society of Digital Graphics - vol. 2 - ISBN: 978-85-8039-133-6] Florianópolis, SC, Brasil 23-27 November 2015, pp. 761-766
summary This paper examines the redefinition of public urban space through the evaluation and implementation of a series of globally interconnected interactive & robotic kiosks. Through the utilization and deciphering of relevant urban data, “Public Sphere” creates a new tangible layer within the urban fabric accessed through local and global reactive interfaces that engage the “contemporary” urban dweller with a network of urban ecologies that had previously remained hidden or overlooked. Through a series of studies examining the relationship between “Users, Robot & Global Network”, this paper outlines the processes and inquiries that inform the current location of this ongoing research.
