summary The paper presents results of a research conducted in 2015 and 2016 at Lodz University of Technology. It proposes a purpose and context fit approach towards the automation of urban data generation based on GIS tools and New Urbanism typologies. First, background studies of methods applied in urban morphology analysis are revealed. Form-Based Code planning, and subsequently Transect-Based Code are taken into account. Then, selected examples from literature are described and discussed. Finally, the research study is presented and the outcomes compared with more traditional methodology.

summary This is the second volume of the conference proceedings of the 33rd eCAADe conference, held from 16-18 September 2015 at TU Wien, Vienna, Austria. Both volumes together contain the 145 accepted papers that are also available digitally in CuminCAD (Cumulative Index of Computer Aided Architectural Design, http://cumincad.scix.net). The theme of the 33rd eCAADe conference is Real Time: Seeing architectural design as a time-critical and time-related activity requires new tools, methods and theories that deliver results not only accurately but also timely. As project cycles begin to accelerate, a variety of design decisions need to be taken swiftly and nevertheless accurately. Today's practice needs to explore the solution space through a rapid feedback loop between digital and physical products, used collaboratively and over a distance. To facilitate such a back-and-forth, geometries must be converted to manageable approximations on which intelligent tools can act, providing the designer with feedback and advice. This year's conference seeks to be a platform for research, teaching and practical work conducted in that spirit. The second volume of the proceedings contains 74 papers grouped under 15 sub-themes, which generally follow a more designernly and educational logic than the works in volume 1 (which follow a more formal approach). As additional part, we have our preceding workshop contributions, which are papers summarizing the workshops given.

summary The objective of the research is to analyze the psychological evaluation of the spatial representation in the Western paintings to obtain the insights to the reception of the two-dimensional architectural images. The psychological evaluation experiment based on the SD methods was conducted using 15 Western paintings to quantitatively measure the impression of the spatial representation by the viewers. Through the factor analysis and the cluster analysis, it was revealed that the certain types of compositions evoke similar impression and psychological evaluation in the viewers’ mind, regardless of the time period or style.

summary CFAST is a two-zone model which simulates fire growth and smoke transport. Manually modeling a building using CFAST user interface is a time consuming and error-prone process. In addition, the limitations in CFAST structure impede data transfer between CFAST and BIM (Building Information Modeling). In this research, we identified major limitations of CFAST, proposed solutions to the limitations, and developed a system for data interchange between BIM and CFAST. This greatly facilitated fire and smoke simulation. We further developed a visualization module to visualize the simulation results to overcome the problems when using SmokeView, an application developed by NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology). A pilot test is conducted using this system. The simulation process was done in just a few minutes. This is expected to help architects to design buildings safer from building fires, and help students in learning building safety and fire related building codes.

title Parametric Tools and Creativity in Architectural Practice

summary This paper empirically tested the relationship between creativity and computing tools in two different architectural practice settings: one that extensively uses parametric tools for design and fabrication and another that predominantly uses conventional CAD tools in design. The paper surveyed 14 parametric practices and 17 non parametric practices from the UK. The results were statistically analysed using IBM_SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences). The analysis of variance between the 2 groups revealed significant differences on the four domains of creativity. Statistical variance between the two groups on originality was big. Also the length of time subjects used parametric tools correlated significantly with three measures of creativity (fluency, variety and elaboration). Cluster analysis on design cognition of the two groups showed significant pattern differences on how each group structures the design process.

title From representational to parametric and algorithmic interactions: A panorama of Digital Architectural Design teaching in Latin America

summary This study focuses on the context of graphic representation technologies and digital design on Architectural teaching in Latin America. From categories proposed by Oxman and Kotnik and through a mapping study framed by a systematic review in CumInCAD database, it is presented a panorama of the state-of-art of the digital design on Architectural teaching in the region, between 2006 and 2015. The results suggest a context of coexistence of representational interaction and parametric interaction, as well as a transition from one to another and the emergence of the first experiments in algorithmic interaction. As this mapping shows an ongoing movement toward Digital Architectural Design in Latin America in the last decade, and points out its dynamics in space in time, it could contribute to strengthen a crowdthinking network on this issue in the region and with other continents.

summary This paper advances the application of computational optimization to design for circular economy (CE) by comparing results of scalarized single-objective optimization (SOO) and multi-objective optimization (MOO) to a furniture design case study. A framework integrating both methods is put forward based on results of the case study. Existing design frameworks for CE emphasize optimization through an iterative process of manual assessment and redesign (Ellen MacArthur Foundation, 2015). Identifying good design solutions for CE, however, is a complex and time-consuming process. Most prominent CE design frameworks list at least nine objectives, several of which may conflict (Reike et al., 2018). Computational optimization responds to these challenges by automating search for best solutions and assisting the designer to identify and manage conflicting objectives. Given the many objectives outlined in circular design frameworks, computational optimisation would appear a priori to be an appropriate method. While results presented in this paper show that scalarized SOO is ultimately more time-efficient for evaluating CE design problems, we suggest that given the presence of conflicting circular design objectives, pareto-set visualization via MOO can initially better support designers to identify preferences.

summary This paper investigates the potential of soft robotics that are enabled by emergent materials in architecture. Distributed, adaptive soft robotics holds the promise to address many issues in architectural environments such as energy efficiency as well as user comfort and safety.Two examples out of a series of experiments conducted in the Material Dynamics Lab at the New Jersey Institute of Technology are being introduced and serve as a vehicle to explore distributed soft robotics in architectural environments. The design process and project development methods of the soft robotic systems integrated the fabrication of working proof of concept prototypes as well as their testing.

summary This article describes and analyzes experiments conducted during the development of the master’s work entitled “Parameterized Modeling of Accessibility Design Details: Work Flow In order to have reusability, interoperability and materialization”. Such experiments intended to investigate and verify the potential of interoperability between different architecture software. It was verified the possibility of materialization and reuse of models, where the details worked with a new guise through the context of developing and creating a project in which it was inserted. The difficulties of accessing, sharing and editing data and information were evaluated. The results obtained allowed to identify features and limitations related to the models and their formats.

summary For several years great effort has been devoted to the study of Architectural Design Optimization (ADO). However, although in the recent years ADO has attracted much attention from academia, optimization methods and tools have had a limited influence on the architectural profession. The aim of the study is to reveal users' expectations from the optimization tools and define limitations preventing wide-spread adaptation of the optimization solvers in the architectural practice. The paper presents the results of the survey "Optimization in the architectural practice" conducted between December 2015 and February 2016 on 165 architectural trainees and practising architects from 34 countries. The results show that there is a need for an interactive multi-objective optimization tool, as 78% respondents declared that a multi-objective optimization is more necessary in their practice than a single objective one and 91% of them acknowledged the need for choice of promising solutions during optimization process. Finally, it has been found that daylight, structure and geometry are three top factors which architects are interested in optimizing.

summary In the last two decades, CAD/CAM technologies have opened new conceptual and material opportunities in architecture. By combining computational design and digital fabrication technologies, architects have embraced a higher level of geometric complexity and variability in their solutions. Such non-standard possibilities were expanded with the recent introduction of robotic technologies in the discipline, which have allowed moving beyond the fabrication of building components to reach the construction of building parts. As a result of this digital condition, traditional materials have known innovative applications in architecture. In this context, this paper presents cork, which is a natural and recyclable material. By describing its unique set of properties and features, it argues about its relevance for the building construction in the present times. With this underlying motivation, this paper defines the current state of the research in architecture on the use of robotic fabrication with cork. It does so by describing and illustrating a set of different experiments conducted by the authors in their academic institutions. The results unveil a set of innovative applications of cork in building construction, and, at the same time, contribute to show how robotic technologies can be used to rethink and update traditional and old materials in architecture.

summary This paper explores the differences between 'design' and 'science' papers published at eCAADe conferences through use of automatic classification. The latter is conducted using a set of differentiating criteria (e.g. number of figures determines a paper to be either 'design' or 'science') which are calibrated with the help of a manual selection of papers from eCAADe 2015 as ground truth. Results show that we predict 83% of the papers correctly; experiments using data from eCAADe 2014 until eCAADe 2016 furthermore show the stability of our results. However, we are not so much after the development this automatic classification but rather want to characterize the two research cultures of design and science. This is achieved by taking a close look at the differentiating criteria, which can inform tools such as ProceeDings over possible future directions and adaptation needs.

title Architects' Cognitive Behaviour in Parametric Design

summary This paper presents the results of a protocol study of professional architects' cognitive behaviour in a parametric design environment. A design experiment was conducted in which eight professional architects completed an architectural conceptual design task in a typical parametric design environment -Rhino and Grasshopper. Protocol analysis was then applied to analyse the cognitive behaviour of the architects. In analysing the protocol data, the FBS ontology adopted for developing the coding scheme was sub-divided into design knowledge and rule algorithm classes as the means to capture designers' cognitive behaviour. Applying the method of cumulative analysis, results of the relative cognitive effort expended on design knowledge and rule algorithm classes have been compared and are discussed in the paper.

summary The problem at hand is to ensure that the perception by means of Augmented Reality (AR) is hence reliable and opinions resulting from a Participatory Design (PD) mediated by this technology could be incorporated into the design solution. This paper presents the evaluation of multiple 3D models recognition in AR, with or without an auxiliary projection. Leisure area designs involve urban equipment of various dimensions that are visualized simultaneously. Therefore, it was necessary to verify if the participants were capable of recognizing them and which would be the best way to visualize: exclusively with the iPad screen or with the iPad associated with an external projection – to verify whether the visualization using an external projection would amplify the visualization area. The results obtained in the evaluation were used to improve the AR application and also, to develop guidelines for the AR use in a PD.

summary The increased proliferation of computational tools for building performance evaluation during conceptual design has led to a fundamental transformation in architectural education over the past decade. Morphological exploration and form-finding in the studio setting now gets more and more enriched by environmental performance feedback that allows students to test their design in unprecedented ways. This paper contextualises the underlying developments leading to this changed context that results in greater convergence of information from various software applications, facilitated via digital means. The author presents the process and the outcomes of a recent architectural design studio as an example of how this convergence unfolds in an academic setting. The studio example highlights how the fluid interaction between parametric design techniques and environmental performance feedback enriches the students’ abilities to engage with their design processes in innovative ways.

summary The aim of this investigation was to evaluate the performance of three wind analysis programs used in the early design stage (EDS) of a passive windbreak shelter concept for an urban context. This study compared the different workflows of these programs and the respective visualized results, identifying the differences and limitations of these tools, for design exploration. The programs tested were Autodesk Vasari, ODS-Studio, and ANSYS CFX. The results of this investigation indicate that basic computational fluid dynamics (CFD) programs such as Vasari was found to be more suitable for the observation of large-scale wind phenomena through the whole area of the shelter. Moreover, intermediate CFD tools (functions, usability) such as ODS-Studio can be used more efficiently in detailed visualization of wind interacting with design features. Finally, a more sophisticated CFD program like ANSYS CFX can be incorporated in the early design stage workflow for final verification of results.

title Assessing Santa Marta: Using Evaluation Tools to Inform Parametric Urban Design

summary Lack of affordable housing is a worldwide problem. Rapid urbanization, rural exodus, and poor governance policies have contributed to the problem and, in response, low-income populations resort to self-construction. The result are informal settlements located predominantly in marginalized urban areas (United Nations, 2015) that develop with neither urban infrastructure nor compliance with building and planning codes (Lall et al., 2006; Patel et al., 2018; United Nations Human Settlements Programme, 2012) and, consequently, offer a poor-quality built environment. The goal of this paper is to methodologically identify physical aspects of such built environments that could be improved. We evaluate a case study, the Santa Marta favela in Brazil, using a holistic housing-quality assessment tool and local building and planning codes as reference. Our results identify the physical characteristics with lower quality standards in the case study and demonstrate the efficacy of the methodology introduced for this purpose.
