summary A shape grammar-based computational system for chair design is presented. The paper focuses on the development of a methodology for modelling the definition stage of the design process. It is achieved by incorporating a specific grammar into a generic grammar to assist the designer in the convergence activities during the definition stage. Both grammars and their respective implementations were previously developed by different authors. The purpose is to enable the generation of a generic design solution that encompasses characteristics of a specific style, thus permitting subsequent exploration in the development stage.

summary The following paper describes the process and results achieved with the workshop entitled ‘Re-inventing Portuguese ceramic tiles’ reflecting on design methodology and design teaching. Workshop participants were invited to rethink ceramic tile patterns developing a different process which used shape grammars as a generative system. Each participant group developed a three stage task using shape grammars principles and methodology. The preliminary results the work developed are of particular relevance in shape grammar research: firstly shape grammar formulae does not constitute an intuitive process to most creative designers which are often trained to design singular solutions for a specific problem, secondly more than one operative shape grammar can be formulated to represent the same corpus of solutions and lastly the generative potential of grammars transcends the normal capacities of the original grammarist aiding in design exploration and enlarging the corpus of feasible solutions. This paper also reflects on the impact of shape grammars as a design methodology.

summary Product classes share the same basic abstract layout, despite their great diversity. The present paper intends to (de)code the variety of types embedded in the class of multipurpose chairs. The contribution of this research is the development of a generative design tool, to be used at the conceptual chair design stage. A framework of five stages is proposed: (1) sample definition, considering chairs with a large diversity of types; (2) analysis of the syntax and semantics of the class through ontological classification; (3) development of a generic shape grammar, innovatively applied to product design; (4) implementation of a digital tool, that provides an interface to manipulate the chair components visualized in a 3D digital model; and (5) user evaluation of the program, in order to draw conclusions on the usability and usefulness of the tool and to collect inputs for further developments.

summary This paper presents part of CORK’EWS, a research work developed within the framework of the Digital Architecture Advanced Program 2012/13 at ISCTE-IUL. The main goal of this investigation was to develop a parametric, customizable and adaptive wall system designed for environmental performance. Moreover, the system is based on standard industrial products: expanded cork blocks produced by Amorim Insulation industries. CAD/CAM resources were the essential tools of the research process, where fundamental and practical knowledge is integrated to understand the microstructure morphological properties of the raw material – cork – and its derivate – natural expanded cork. These properties were upscale and adapted to create a wall with an optimized solar control environmental performance. The result is a digitally fabricated prototype of a new customizable industrial product, adaptable to specific environmental conditions and installation setups being therefore easily commercialized. From microstructural morphology to macroscale construction, the research explores new application possibilities through morphogenesis and opens new possible markets for these customizable products.

summary With an exponential increase in the possibilities of computation and computer-controlled fabrication, high density information is becoming a reality in digital design and architecture. However, construction methods and industrial fabrication processes have not yet been reshaped to accommodate the recent changes in those disciplines. Although it is possible to build up complex simulations with millions of particles, the simulation is often disconnected from the actual fabrication process. Our research proposes a bridge between both stages, where one drives the other, producing a smooth transition from design to production. A particle in the digital domain becomes a drop of material in the construction method.The architect's medium of expression has become much more than a representational tool in the last century, and more recently it has evolved even beyond a series of rules to drive from design to production. The design system is the instruction itself; embedding structure, material and tectonics and gets delivered to the very end of the construction chain, where it gets materialised. The research showcased in this paper investigates tectonic systems associated with large scale 3D printing and additive manufacturing methods, inheriting both material properties and fabrication constraints at all stages from design to production. Computational models and custom design software packages are designed and developed as strategies to organise material in space in response to specific structural and logistical input.Although the research has developed a wide spectrum of 3D printing methods, this paper focuses only on two of the most recent projects, where different material and computational logics were investigated. The first, titled Filamentrics, intends to develop free-form space frames, overcoming their homogeneity by introducing robotic plastic extrusion. Through the use of custom made extruders a vast range of high resolution prototypes were developed, evolving the design process towards the fabrication of precise structures that can be materialised using additive manufacturing but without the use of a layered 3D printing method. Instead, material limitations were studied and embedded in custom algorithms that allow depositing material in the air for internal connectivity. The final result is a 3x2x2.5m structure that demonstrates the viability of this construction method for being implemented in more industrial scenarios.While Filamentrics is reshaping the way we could design and build light weight structures, the second project Microstrata aims to establish new construction methods for compression based materials. A layering 3D printing method combines both the deposition of the binder and the distribution of an interconnected network of capillaries. These capillaries are organised following structural principles, configuring a series of channels which are left empty within the mass. In a second stage aluminium is cast in this hollow space to build a continuous tension reinforcement.

summary In this paper, we review and extend the idea of Alexander’s “pattern language”, especially from the viewpoints of complexity theories, information systems, and human-computer interaction, to explore spatial cognition-based design representations for “intelligent and adaptive/interactive environment” in architecture and urban planning. We propose a theoretic framework of design patterns “with spatial information processing”, and attempt to incorporate state-of-the-art computational methods of information visualization/visual analytics into the conventional CAAD approaches. Focused on the spatial-semantic analytics, together with abstract syntactic pattern representation, by using “spatial-semantic aware” graph grammar formalization, i.e., Spatial Graph Grammars (SGG), the relevant models, algorithms and tool are proposed. We testify our theoretic framework and computational tool VEGGIE (a Visual Environment of Graph Grammar Induction Engineering) by using actual architectural design works (spatial layout exemplars of a small office building and the three house projects by Frank Lloyd Wright) as study cases, so as to demonstrate our proposed approach for practical applications. The results are discussed and further research is suggested.

summary The prevalent mode of shape grammar output is a two-dimensional drawing grammar. For architectural applications, these two- dimensional shape rules can hold a variety of interpretations in three-dimensional space. This work translates an existing grammar from a manual two-dimensional drawing grammar to an automated three-dimensional building grammar to explore the challenges and opportunities that this translation suggests in the larger context of shape computation. The case study considered here is a grammar interpreting John Portman’s architectural language as defined by the house Portman identifies as emblematic of his design principles, his 1964 personal residence Entelechy I.

summary This paper presents a computationally based methodology arising from the application of weaving techniques for the design and construction of an experimental architectural system, Weaving Enclosure. The research explores the close correspondence between material properties and assembly systems found in the traditional craft of weaving, studied through analytical and laboratory tests, and then implemented through computational design and digital fabrication. The workflow for the generation of specific geometries related to the elastic nature of the material results in the design and fabrication of a self- standing interior partition with digitally conceived patterns, tuned parametrically to provide structural and screening performance.

summary Shape grammars provide a concise and computable framework for design space exploration. An important aspect of design space exploration, especially in the case of grammar-based exploration of visual languages, is the ability to modify grammar rules in order to reach design solutions that are not in the scope of the initial grammar. In this paper, we describe and implement a semi-automatic approach for the 'on-the-fly' generation of new rules. In particular, new rules are added to a shape grammar by manually modifying the current shape in the derivation. This approach might enable a more agile exploration of the design space. Also, we demonstrate a proof-of-concept of the proposed approach based on an existing graph-theoretic framework for the computer implementation of shape grammars.

summary C-LITH is the reconsideration of the architectural building unit through the exploration of new composite techniques and materials. Our project develops individual compo- nents that exploit the strength, lightness, and variability possible with carbon ber laments when paired with computation, digital fabrication, and hand assembly. Traditionally, architectural units made of brick or concrete are small and multiple, heavy, dif cult to vary, and are much better in compression than tension. Using carbon ber laments to create variable units allows for larger individual units that can vary in both shape and structural performance as needed. Our units, developed through winding pre-preg carbon ber tow around disposable molds, bene t structurally from the quasi-isotropic properties that are developed through the winding patterns. The specific structural capacities of the units remain to be understood through further testing and analysis, which falls outside the scope of this current research. At this junction, structural capacities have been determined empirically, i.e. will it stand? Most importantly, as a formal study, our units address the use of carbon ber at the scale of architectural production. A majority of the effort involved in materializing C-LITH was the development of a two-fold prototypical manufacturing process that produces the components and assembly. For this we invented a method to quickly and cheaply construct variable cardboard molds that could withstand the wound casting and baking steps, but could also be easily weakened through water immersion to be removed. For the assembly we developed a rigid dummy-jig system to hold the joint plates in position with a high level of precision but could also incrementally absorb the adjustment errors unavoidable in hand assembly systems. Using a simple pin connection the resultant structures can be easily disassembled for transportation and reassembly elsewhere.

summary Although many shape grammars and corresponding implementations have been proposed, shape grammars are not widely adopted by architectural designers. In this paper, we therefore look for the barriers of implementing and using shape grammars for architectural design. We do this by outlining several implementation strategies of shape grammars, we briefly point to our own graph-based design grammar system, and we analyse the resulting overview using theories on how designers think and act upon incoming information. Based on this analysis, we develop and suggest how design grammars might best be implemented and used for architectural design relying on the information technologies available at this particular moment of time.

summary This paper presents a 3D Concrete Printing (3DCP) experiment at the full scale of virtualarchitectural bodies developed through a computational technique based on the use of Cellular Automata (CA). The theoretical concept behind this technique is the decoding of errors in form generation and the invention of a process that would recreate the errors as a response to optimization (Adilenidou 2015). The generative design process established a family of structural and formal elements whose proliferation is guided through sets of differential grids (multi-grids) leading to the build-up of large span structures and edifices, for example, a cathedral. This tooling system is capable of producing, with specific inputs, a large number of outcomes in different scales. However, the resulting virtual surfaces could be considered as "unprintable" either due to their need of extra support or due to the presence of many cavities in the surface topology. The above characteristics could be categorized as errors, malfunctions, or undesired details in the geometry of a form that would need to be eliminated to prepare it for printing. This research project attempts to transform these "fabrication imprecisions" through new 3DCP techniques into factors of robustness of the resulting structure. The process includes the elimination of the detail / "errors" of the surface and their later reinsertion as structural folds that would strengthen the assembly. Through this process, the tangible outputs achieved fulfill design and functional requirements without compromising their structural integrity due to the manufacturing constraints.

summary This paper describes the development of the StretchPLAY prototype as a part of the Social Sensory Surfaces research project, focusing on the design of tactile and responsive environments for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The project is directed specifically at issues with sensory processing, the inability of the nervous system to filter sensory input in order to indicate an appropriate response. This can be referred to as a “traffic jam” of sensory data where the intensity of such unfiltered information leads to an over-intensified sensory experience, and ultimately a dis-regulated state. To create a sensory regulating environments, a tactile structure is developed integrating physical, visual and auditory feedback. The structure is defined as a textile hybrid system integrating a seamless knitted textile to form a continuous topologically complex surface. Advancements in the fabrication of the boundary structure, of glass-fiber reinforced rods, enable the form to be more robustly structured than previous examples of textile hybrid or tent-like structures. The tensioned textile is activated as a tangible interface where sensing of touch and pressure on the surface triggers ranges of visual and auditory response. A specific child, a five-year old girl with ASD, is studied in order to tailor the technologies as a response to her sensory challenges. This project is a collaboration with students, researchers and faculty in the fields of architecture, computer science, information (human-computer interaction), music and civil engineering, along with practitioners in the field of ASD-based therapies.

summary The research project proposes an online-controlled robotic process that allows for grading light in aggregate structures using photometric analysis. It investigates the potential of designing specific daylight qualities through the behaviour-based robotic fabrication of the aggregate system. Two key methods are developed: the digital fabrication of the structure and a photometric analysis technique which is used as a sensor input for the robotic sensory interface. In its first part, the paper presents a series of photometric experiments on aggregate wall- and dome-structures. In its second part, the focus is laid on robotic manufacturing of these aggregate structures and the interactive fabrication of specific light conditions. To conclude further areas of research into emergent design processes with aggregates are outlined.

summary This paper presents a workflow called the ‘heuristic optimization workflow’ that integrates Octopus, a Multi-Objective Optimization (MOO) engine with Grasshopper3D, a parametric modeling tool, and multiple simulation software. It describes a process that enables the designer to integrate disparate domains via Octopus and complete a feedback loop with the developed interactive, real-time visualization tools. A retrospective design of the Bow Tower in Calgary is used as a test case to study the impact of the developed workflow and tools, as well as the impact of MOO on the performance of the solutions. The overall workflow makes MOO based results more accessible to designers and encourages a more interactive ‘heuristic’ exploration of various geometric and topological trajectories. The workflow also reduces design decision uncertainty and design cycle latency through the incorporation of a feedback loop between geometric models and their associated quantitative data. It is through the juxtaposition of extreme performing solutions that serendipity is created and the potential for better multiple performing solutions is increased.es responsive systems, which focus on the implementation of multi-objective adaptive design prototypes from sensored environments. The intention of the work is to investigate multi-objective criteria both as a material system and as a processing system by creating prototypes with structural integrity, where the thermal energy flow through the prototype, to be understood as a membrane, can be controlled and the visual transparency altered. The work shows performance based feedback systems and physical prototype models driven by information streaming, screening, and application.

In comparison with the conventional embodiment of a ‘volume’ that encapsulates a certain quantity of space with a shell reticular geometries emerge from the accumulation of micro elements to define a gradient of space. Observed in biological systems, such structures result from their material properties and formation processes as well as often ‘simple’ axioms that produce complex results. In micro or macro levels, from forest tree canopies to plant cell walls these porous volumes are not shaped to have a singular ‘solution’ for a purpose; they provide the fundamental geometric characteristics of a ‘line cloud’ that is simultaneously flexible in response to its environment, porous to other systems (light, air, liquids) and less susceptible to critical damage. The porosity of such systems and their volumetric depth also result in kinetic spatial qualities in a 4D architectural space. Built upon a ‘weaving’ organization and the high performance material properties of carbon fiber composite, this research focuses on a formal grammar that initiates the complex system of a reticular volume. A finite ‘lexical’ axiom is consisted of the basic characters of H, M and L responding to the anchor points on the highest, medium and lower levels of the extruding loom. The genome thus produces a string of data that in the second phase of programming are assigned to 624 points on the loom. The code aims to distribute the nodes across the flat line cloud and organize the sequence for the purpose of overlapping the tensioned strings. The virtually infinite results are then assessed through an evolutionary solver for confining an array of favorable results that can be then selected from by the designer. This research focuses on an approximate control over the fundamental geometric characteristics of a reticular system such as node density and directionality. The proposal frames the favorable result of the weave to be three-dimensional and volumetric – avoiding distinctly linear or surface formations.

summary This paper presents the process and products from research on ‘a movement behavior’, transforming the initial surface from one state to other states. The study developed an initial model of material organization inspired by nature: the adaptable exoskeleton of the armadillium vulgare. Through geometric analysis of functional variation in the exoskeleton’s unit shape, and physical model making, the underlying principle is translated into design & production rules. The generative model of ‘an adaptable segmented system’ is constructed through a geometric abstraction of the exoskeleton, achieving diverse functions such as variability in form, volume, porosity, flexibility and strength, through a distribution of ‘material geometry’ with the folding technique. The potentiality of this parametric physical model (based on simple systematicity) is questioned in relation to diverse situations that result in complex surface adaptations. This research shows the formulation of a design intention.

summary The following research investigates the development of an agent-based design method as an integrative design tool for polygonal surface structures. The aim of this research is to develop a computational tool that self-organizes the emergence of polygonal surface structures from interaction between its constitutive lattices. This research focuses on the ethological level of morphogenesis that is relevant to the animal or insect societies, whereby agents mediate the material organizations with environmental aspects. Meanwhile, behavior-based approaches are investigated as a bottom-up system to develop a computational framework in which the lower-level features constantly interact. The lower-level features such as material properties (e.g., geometric descriptions) are abstracted into building blocks or agents to construct the agent’s morphology. The abstracted principles, which define the agent’s morphology, are aggregated into a generative tool to explore the emergent complexities. This exploration coupled with the generative constraint mechanisms steers the collective agents system toward the cloud of solutions; hence, the collective behaviors of agents constitute the polygonal surface structures. This polygonal system is a bottom up approach of developing the complex surface that emerges through topological and topographical interaction between cells and their surrounding environment. Subsequently, the integrative system is developed through agent-based parametric modelling, in which the knowledge-based system as a top-down approach is substituted with the agent system together with its morphological features and significant behaviors.

summary This paper describes the development of a sentient canopy that interacts with human visitors by using its own internal motivation. Modular curiosity-based machine learning behaviour is supported by a highly distributed system of microprocessor hardware integrated within interlinked cellular arrays of sound, light, kinetic actuators and proprioreceptive sensors in a resilient physical scaffolding system. The curiosity-based system involves exploration by employing an expert system composed of archives of information from preceding behaviours, calculating potential behaviours together with locations and applications, executing behaviour and comparing result to prediction. Prototype architectural structures entitled Sentient Canopy and Sentient Chamber developed during 2015 and 2016 were developed to support this interactive behaviour, integrating new communications protocols and firmware, and a hybrid proprioreceptive system that configured new electronics with sound, light, and motion sensing capable of internal machine sensing and externally- oriented sensing for human interaction. Proprioreception was implemented by producing custom electronics serving photoresistors, pitch-sensing microphones, and accelerometers for motion and position, coupled to sound, light and motion-based actuators and additional infrared sensors designed for sensing of human gestures. This configuration provided the machine system with the ability to calculate and detect real-time behaviour and to compare this to models of behaviour predicted within scripted routines. Testbeds located at the Living Architecture Systems Group/Philip Beesley Architect Inc. (LASG/PBAI, Waterloo/Toronto), Centre for Information Technology (CITA, Copenhagen) National Academy of Sciences (NAS) in Washington DC are illustrated.
