summary Within the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry, the application of multidisciplinary optimization methods has been shown to reach significant improvements in building performance compared to conventional design methods. As a result, the use of multidisciplinary optimization in the process of design is growing and becoming a common method that provides desired performance feedback for decision making. However, there is a lack of BIM-based multidisciplinary optimization tools that use the rich information stored in Building Information Models (BIM) to help designers explore design alternatives across multiple competing design criteria. In this paper we introduce Optimo, an open-source visual programming-based Multi-Objective Optimization (MOO) tool, which is developed to parametrically interact with Autodesk Revit for BIM-based optimization. The paper details the development process of Optimo and also provides the initial validation of its results using optimization test functions. Finally, strengths, limitations, current adoption by academia and industry, and future improvements of Optimo for building performance optimization are discussed.

summary Computation, in the context of a digital designing process, is redefining architectural practice. Architects are developing new sets of tools which are dramatically changing the typical way of design procedure. The paper describes the research assumptions, problems and solutions proposition, aimed at creation of a real-time form finding tool for architects based on engineering methods. Through intersecting architectural form evaluation with engineering analysis and optimisation tools it is highly intended to offer the opportunity to variety of architects and designers to use the exceedingly complex and compound process for their design improvement. The form finding tool, to be effective and reliable, has to provide immediate feedback to a designer. This requirement enforces a software developer to use more sophisticated solutions. The paper focuses on possibilities of already known engineering procedures acceleration such as Finite Element Method or Topology Optimization for effective implementation in architectural design process.

summary This paper researches the usefulness of computerized space layout programs in an actual problem of space layout of more than 50 design units of unequal sizes. This was tested with two existing space layout optimization methods, Quadratic Assignment Problem (QAP) and Attraction Force Model (AFM) as well as a satisficing method, intuitive approach. Necessary inputs for the evaluation processes, the evaluation processes and the resulting space layouts were analyzed for each approach by one designer. Their performance in the design process was criticized on subjects like preparation of inputs, situations related with multiple trials, evaluation of the resulting space layouts based on given inputs and what those space layouts represented. Generating alternatives is an advantage of computerized space layout approaches so that conditioning on the resulting space layouts decreases in the process but more research has to be done for their practicality in terms of input preparation, evaluation and transfer of outputs. Possible improvements were suggested to increase their usefulness in the professional field.

summary It is necessary for an architect to engage closely with structural design, to interpret their design idea thoroughly, and it requires carefully collaboration between architect and engineer. The structural performance based design is not only to obey structure principle but to explore different possibilities of engineer and architectural innovation. Architects could apply this method in the earlier stage of design, and it could provide the efficient solution for structure, create a new spatial experience and further improve the construction quality in the later phase of development. In comparison to structural performance-based design in history, the computational technology has made it possible for architects to implement further the structural knowledge in more dynamic and sophisticated environment. This paper will discuss the history development and current transformation of this method. Three research project will explain the current experimental design process and back the idea of this method.

summary Detection of emergent shapes in sketches requires extensive exploration of the design space. Automating this process with computational methods enables locating various alternatives sequentially or all at once simultaneously via high computational power. This not only helps efficient design space exploration but also provides a systematic way for keeping track of the design process. However, it is a challenge to define a generic computational method which optimizes the design space searches in time and space. The approaches that are based on optimization may suffer from time efficiency and local minima problems. These problems are substantially solved in this work by performing comprehensive parallel searches in the design space with a genetic algorithm. Advantage of this approach is that the local minima problem is reduced significantly without increasing the execution times.

summary The basic concept of BIM is a consistent 3D model of buildings containing all main data as base for collaboration for all disciplines. Since BIM-software is normally run on single workstations, the potential for direct collaboration is somehow limited. The focus of our ongoing research is to overcome these restrictions and to provide a platform for development and optimization by combining BIM and Virtual Reality (VR), linking BIM (Revit) with VR (COVISE). Projects as well as data can be visualized in VR and reviewed 1:1 scale even in team meetings. Compared to various existing approaches, our new approach is to have bidirectional data exchange between the systems. Changes in Revit are directly reflected in VR and vice versa, continuously updating the model and its underlying database. We have been able to implement a range of interactions, however it's still a long way to identify further useful interactions and to implement them.

summary This paper discusses the development of an informed Design-to-Robotic-Production (D2RP) system for additive manufacturing to achieve performative porosity in architecture at various scales. An extended series of experiments on materiality, fabrication and robotics were designed and carried out resulting in the production of a one-to-one scale prototype. In this context, design materiality has been approached from both digital and physical perspectives. At digital materiality level, a customized computational design framework is implemented for form finding of compression only structures combined with a material distribution optimization method. Moreover, the chained connection between parametric design model and robotic production setup has led to a systematic study of certain aspects of physicality that cannot be fully simulated in the digital medium, which then establish a feedback loop for underrating material behaviors and properties. As a result, the D2RP system proposes an alternative method of robotic material deposition to create an informed material architecture.

summary This paper advances the application of computational optimization to design for circular economy (CE) by comparing results of scalarized single-objective optimization (SOO) and multi-objective optimization (MOO) to a furniture design case study. A framework integrating both methods is put forward based on results of the case study. Existing design frameworks for CE emphasize optimization through an iterative process of manual assessment and redesign (Ellen MacArthur Foundation, 2015). Identifying good design solutions for CE, however, is a complex and time-consuming process. Most prominent CE design frameworks list at least nine objectives, several of which may conflict (Reike et al., 2018). Computational optimization responds to these challenges by automating search for best solutions and assisting the designer to identify and manage conflicting objectives. Given the many objectives outlined in circular design frameworks, computational optimisation would appear a priori to be an appropriate method. While results presented in this paper show that scalarized SOO is ultimately more time-efficient for evaluating CE design problems, we suggest that given the presence of conflicting circular design objectives, pareto-set visualization via MOO can initially better support designers to identify preferences.

summary The Poisson’s ratio of materials describes the ratio of the transverse to axial strain. While most materials exhibit non-negative Poisson ratio, here we focus on the topological properties of negative ratio materials also known as auxetic constructs. Digital modelling and physical fabrication are employed to generate and test experimental auxetic configurations. The first set of studies employ 2D space-filling tessellations integrating both negative and positive Poisson ratio cells. The tessellations are designed through binary state transitions and gradual morphing transitions. A second set of studies explores the topological optimization of a single negative Poisson cell configuration following the logic that a cell constitutes the building block of auxetic materials. The third set of studies focuses on the translation of heterogeneous Poisson ratio 2D tessellations into 3D constructs. Here, two methods of fabrication are explored: lamination method and cellular grading. The precision of the cellular grading method renders it particularly suitable for multi-material 3D printing fabrication which is theoretically studied and proposed. Space-filling heterogeneous tessellation studies are applied to architectural and product design proposals. These proposals exhibit properties that could serve to design and develop further research on real-world applications.

summary The paper presents an educational method used in teaching design of high-rise buildings in the city center. The author outlines the processes developed by students, the tools they used and the final results of design studio project and the supporting seminar, focused on exploring information processes in design. For the purpose of the design studio the students developed their own generative strategies that allowed incorporating optimization procedures into the design process. Within the framework of the seminar classes students developed individual optimization tools with the use of genetic algorithms in order to explore the search space and select the best possible architectural solutions for the specified criteria. The students used the above-mentioned tools mostly during the building's form-finding design stage or attempted to optimize just the building structure.

summary In shop design a common method to maximize sales is to manipulate the customers through spatial arrangements of shelves and products. The aim of this practice is that shoppers have to spend a long time in the store and pass a high quantity of products. Using this technique requires a lot of empirical analysis of POS (point of sale) data and experimentation with product and shelf arrangements, while not upsetting the customers by guiding them through a “shopping maze”. For this reason we developed a tool that semi-automatically - just a couple of inputs concerning the type of shop are required - creates different shopping layouts which are later analyzed and optimized for visibility and product placement. This tool aims to support shop designers in an early planning stage. This is done by creating and testing a large number of different shopping layouts without having to conduct experiments in an actually built environment..

title Creating and Improving a Closed Loop: Design Optimization and Knowledge Discovery in Architecture

summary This paper presents computational methods for creating and improving a closed loop of design optimization and knowledge discovery in architecture. It first introduces a design knowledge-assisted optimization improvement method with the technique - offline simulation - to reduce the computing time and improve the efficiency of the design optimization process utilizing architectural domain knowledge. It then describes a new design knowledge discovery system where design knowledge can be discovered from optimization through an automatic data mining approach. The discovered knowledge has the potential to further help improve the efficiency of the optimization method, thus forming a closed loop of improving optimization and knowledge discovery. The demonstration and validation of both methods are presented in the context of a case study with parametric form-finding for a nursing unit design with two design objectives: minimizing the nurses’ travel distance and maximizing daylighting performance in patient rooms.

summary With the rapid development of the digital fabrication technology, structural performance based design shows broad application prospects. Based on the research project "Reverse rafter", this paper aims to explore the possibility of simulating and re-applying Chinese traditional wood tectonics with structure performance based computational technology. Taking "eaves rafter" as research prototype, this project employed topology optimization as research method and “Millipede” as analysis tool. Through the comparison between the analysis results of traditional structure calculation and topology optimization method, this project revealed the underlying structural principles of "eaves rafter", based on which a modern reciprocal structure installation was generated through digital design method. CNC cutting technology was employed to ensure the fabrication accuracy in digital fabrication processes.

summary This paper is focusing on the idea of error as the origin of difference in form but also as the path and the necessity for optimization. It describes the use of Cellular Automata (CA) for a series of structural and formal elements, whose proliferation is guided through sets of differential grids (multigrids) and leads to the buildup of big span structures and edifices as, for example, a cathedral. Starting from the error as the main idea/tool for optimization, taxonomies of morphological errors occur and at a next step, they are informed with contextual elements to produce an architectural system. A toolbox is composed that can be implemented in different scales and environmental parameters, providing variation, optimization, complexity and detail density. Different sets of experiments were created starting from linear structural elements and continuing to space dividers and larger surface components.

summary This paper presents a 3D Concrete Printing (3DCP) experiment at the full scale of virtualarchitectural bodies developed through a computational technique based on the use of Cellular Automata (CA). The theoretical concept behind this technique is the decoding of errors in form generation and the invention of a process that would recreate the errors as a response to optimization (Adilenidou 2015). The generative design process established a family of structural and formal elements whose proliferation is guided through sets of differential grids (multi-grids) leading to the build-up of large span structures and edifices, for example, a cathedral. This tooling system is capable of producing, with specific inputs, a large number of outcomes in different scales. However, the resulting virtual surfaces could be considered as "unprintable" either due to their need of extra support or due to the presence of many cavities in the surface topology. The above characteristics could be categorized as errors, malfunctions, or undesired details in the geometry of a form that would need to be eliminated to prepare it for printing. This research project attempts to transform these "fabrication imprecisions" through new 3DCP techniques into factors of robustness of the resulting structure. The process includes the elimination of the detail / "errors" of the surface and their later reinsertion as structural folds that would strengthen the assembly. Through this process, the tangible outputs achieved fulfill design and functional requirements without compromising their structural integrity due to the manufacturing constraints.

summary In continuation to the Deceptive Landscape Installation research project (Agkathidis, Kocatürk 2014), this paper investigates the implementation of generative design techniques in undergraduate architectural design education. After reviewing the main definitions of generative design synoptically, we have assessed the application of a modified generative method on a final year, undergraduate design studio, in order to evaluate its potential and its suitability within the framework of a research led design studio, leading to an RIBA accredited Part I degree. Our research findings based on analysis of the design outputs, student performance, external examiners reports as well as student course evaluation surveys indicate a positive outcome on the studio's design approach, as well as its suitability for an undergraduate design studio. They initiate a flourishing debate about accomplishments and failures of a design methodology, which still remains alien to many undergraduate curricula.

summary This document shows a rationalisation method of sheet metal panelling on free-formed surfaces and a case study of it. Ichimonji-buki is a cladding method widely used in Japan for the roofs of traditional temples and shrines. It consists of sheet metal roofing with flat lock seams, allowing for minimal gaps along the joints. By integrating the characteristics of the flat lock joint and a dynamic relaxation analysis via computational modelling, continuous vertical seam lines can be realised while keeping panels almost identical in shape and with a limited number of variations. In the case study of Silver Mountain, the free-formed roof is clad with approximately 8,000 panels, out of which 92% are standardised and can be easily fabricated.

summary Robotic assembly of architectural structures has been an area of research for a few decades. Yet, current methods impose a large number of constraints on the geometry of those structures. In this paper we introduce a method for robotic assembly that enables the construction of double curved self-supporting structures. Latest research challenges have focused on the assembly of sophisticated brick structures and on sensor feedback systems for handling accuracy. We propose an alternative strategy to tackle tolerance handling in complex structures that rely on geometry. The intelligence of the system lies in two main aspects: a subdivision technique that incorporates the robot’s constraints as well as the structural equilibrium of the structure during each step of assembly, in order to omit the use of scaffolding; and a match between geometric information and the robot’s movements in a robot programming environment. As a proof of concept, we fabricated a portion of a full-scale double-curved structure. The structure was assembled without scaffolding by a portable KUKA KR10 on a randomly picked site. This project aims to demonstrate an easy and simple method for robotic assembly that enables the realization of digitally generated complex geometries as concrete complex structures.
