summary The topic of this paper concentrates on robots and their new role in the architectural process from the early stage of conceptualization to the final stage of its materialization. By presenting a theoretical framework and an applied case study, this paper tries to initiate the discussion of redefining the status of the robotic machine in architecture. Besides being a regular tool among other digital fabrication tools, the robot and the ability of the architect to technically manipulate them, bears the potential of further reconnecting and intertwining the process behind design and fabrication. Operational and structural processes are being modified and points of focus shifted. Digital design connected by customized robotic machines to digital fabrication has the capability to result in a new type of architecture.

summary This paper intends to develop an understanding of the new role robotics occupy in the architectural process, from the early stage of conceptualization to the final stage of its materialization. This issue will be addressed on two levels of discourse. While the first level discusses the theoretical-philosophical framework behind the architectural integration of robots, the second investigates the resulting methodological implications on an applied research project. A critical evaluation of the use and the self-development of robots or robotic devices by architects is being aspired to. The attempt to redefine the status of the machine in general, and specifically of the robot, seeks to illustrate the robot as an active design agent.

summary As computation and robotics become more prevalent in all aspects of architecture, their impact on education assumes greater importance. The paper presents the outcomes of a collaborative undergraduate architectural design studio that investigates the realms of architectural robotics and computation by stepping into the fecund intersections between multiple disciplines. The pedagogical prototype, Unsolicited: An Inconvenient Studio, broadly focused on the topics of robotics and responsive architectures. The notion of robotics was interpreted to include a range of robotic technologies and their formal manifestations in the form of biomorphic, mechanomorphic, polymorphic, and amorphic robots, and interactive architecture. Taught using a recently developed framework that focuses on self-organizing systems and the creation of innovative technology-driven design entrepreneurs rather than merely on the creation of designed artefacts, students found themselves not only innovating with new digital technologies but also bridging architecture, urbanism and computer science. The paper describes the pedagogy, processes, and outcomes of the studio.

title A Collaborative Approach to Digital Fabrication:A Case Study for the Design and Production of Concrete ‘Pop-up’ Structures

summary The research presented in this paper utilizes industrial robotic arms and new material technologies to model and explore a prototypical workflow for on-site robotic collaboration based on feedback loops. This workflow will ultimately allow for the construction of customized, free-form, on-site concrete structures without the need for complex formwork. The paper starts with an explanation of the relevance of collaborative robotics through history in the industry and in architecture. An argument is put forward for the need to move towards the development of collaborative processes based on feedback loops amongst the designer, the robot and the material, where they all inform each other continuously. This kind of process, with different degrees of autonomy and agency for each actor, is necessary for on-site deployment of robots. A test scenario is described using an innovative material named concrete canvas that exhibits hybrid soft fabric and rigid thin-shell tectonics. This research project illustrates the benefits of integrating information-embedded materials, masscustomization and feedback loops. Geometry scanning, parametric perforation pattern control, computational analysis and simulation, and robotic fabrication were integrated within a digital fabrication deployment scenario. The paper concludes with a detailed report of research findings and an outline for future work.

summary Robotics in Architecture is a widely established research field with various notable scholarly contributions. Historically automobile manufactures have established the production and use of robot arms and have consequently had the most impact on the design of robot arms with their demands in mind. Thus one could argument that most robot arms were and are developed for an industry where the product comes to the tool in a fixed site. When translating this mode of production ‘product – tool – site’ to an architectural context one has to admit that the mode of production differs (site varies – tool needs to come to site – product is result of site-specific design enabled by tools). This paper is a position paper that questions if robot arms designed and developed for a different mode of production are the right tools for pursuing digital fabrication in constructing and building architecture. By introducing collaborative robotics the paper discusses and outlines the advantages as well as disadvantages of collaborative robotics systems. It concludes with recent findings in creative and collaborative robotics that could shift the use of industry robots in architecture as a research tool to collaborative robots as a pseudo-human colleague working on construction sites together with humans.

summary While new software interfaces are making the interaction between humans and robots more pedestrian, there is still an extremely complex workflow from the conception of data on the part of humans to the final action of the arm. In order to continue to promote and advance the use of these versatile tools in architecture, pedagogical strategies are needed to better enable users to engage with them quickly and obtain results while minimising frustration. This paper will outline a pedagogical strategy for introducing the multi-layered levels of knowledge and understanding required to operate a 6-axis robotic arm as developed in undergraduate architectural coursework. It will highlight the various learning modules created in order to deliver the necessary information for understanding the complex operational pipeline required to interact with and operate the robotic arm successfully.

summary This paper reports on the process and outcomes of a digital design studio that integrates parametric design and generative systems in architectural and urban design projects. It explores the interrelationship between the emergence of innovative formal representations using parametric design systems on the one hand, and design autonomy; more specifically the conscious process of generating and developing an architectural concept, on the other. Groups of undergraduate students working on an architectural project are asked to identify a specific conceptual parti that addresses an aspect of architectural quality, define strategies that satisfy those aspects, and computational methodologies to implement those strategies, such as rule-based systems, self-organization systems, and genetic algorithms. The paper describes the educational approach and studio outcomes, discusses implications for CAAD education and curricula, and addresses issues to be considered for parametric and generative software development.

summary Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools are currently making a dynamic appearance in the architectural realm. Social media are being bombarded by word-to-image/image-to-image generated illustrations of fictive buildings generated by tools such as ‘Midjourney’, ‘DALL-E’, ‘Stable Diffusion’ and others. Architects appear to be fascinated by the rapidly generated and inspiring ‘designs’ while others criticise them as superficial and formalistic. In continuation to previous research on Generative Design, (Agkathidis, 2015), this paper aims to investigate whether there is an appropriate way to integrate these new technologies as a generative tool in the educational architectural design process. To answer this question, we developed a design workflow consisting of four phases and tested it for two semesters in an architectural design studio in parallel to other studio units using conventional design methods but working on the same site. The studio outputs were evaluated by guest critics, moderators and external examiners. Furthermore, the design framework was evaluated by the students through an anonymous survey. Our findings highlight the advantages and challenges of the utilisation of AI image synthesis tools in the educational design process of an architectural design approach.

summary Nowadays as the aim to reduce the environmental impact of buildings becomes more apparent, a new architectural design approach is gaining momentum called sustainable architectural design. Sustainable architectural design process includes some regulations itself, which requires calculations, comparisons and consists of several possible conflicting objectives that need to be considered together. A successful green building design can be performed by the creation of alternative designs generated according to all the sustainability parameters and local regulations in conceptual design stage. As there are conflicting criteria's according to LEED and BREAM sustainable site parameters, local regulations and local climate conditions, an efficient decision support system can be developed by the help of Pareto based non-dominated genetic algorithm (NSGA-II) which is used for several possibly conflicting objectives that need to be considered together. In this paper, a model which aims to produce site layout alternatives according to sustainability criteria for cooperative apartment house complexes, will be mentioned.

summary This paper presents a parametric approach toward studying the characteristics of the Islamic geometric patterns (IGP). The presented computational system utilizes a parametric description of the geometry to initiate the process of metamorphosis exploration and to document the generated variations. The study found that changing the parameters in the description produces new variations that have a wide range of qualitative and quantitative properties; some match exactly the properties of traditionally existed geometries.

summary This paper studies the architectural potential of the implementation of material feedback using computer vision before and during an automated fabrication process. The combination of an industrial robot and a 3D camera is used expand the typical one-way design and fabrication process (from a digital design to a physical output), to a feedback loop, where specific material information becomes the main trigger of design decisions and fabrication processes. Several projects developed by the authors and tested during a robotic workshop aim to unveil different aspects of material feedback in architectural design, opening a discussion for the benefit and challenges of this new approach to design and fabrication.

summary The cognitive-theoretical foundation referring to teach drawing as a way of thinking, as well as the construction of the environment by means of drawing using transforming geometries and the formal and para-formal computational process, creating unusual geometries through generative design processes and methodologies, can be seen as some of the main possibilities in exploring dynamic experimental structures for an Adaptive Architecture. This article presents the development of a model for articulated facades, inspired by Hoberman´s Tessellates, and his Adaptive Building Initiative (ABI) project to develop facades models that respond in real time to environmental changes. In addition, we describe an experiment based on the retractable structures, inspired by Hoberman´s work and experimentations. Solutions for responsive facades can offer more flexible architectural solutions providing better use of natural light and contributing to saving energy. Using Rhinoceros and the Grasshopper for modeling and test the responsiveness, the parametric model was created to simulate geometric panels of hexagonal grids that would open and close in reaction to translational motion effects, regulating the amount of light that reaches the building.

summary This article describes and analyzes experiments conducted during the development of the master’s work entitled “Parameterized Modeling of Accessibility Design Details: Work Flow In order to have reusability, interoperability and materialization”. Such experiments intended to investigate and verify the potential of interoperability between different architecture software. It was verified the possibility of materialization and reuse of models, where the details worked with a new guise through the context of developing and creating a project in which it was inserted. The difficulties of accessing, sharing and editing data and information were evaluated. The results obtained allowed to identify features and limitations related to the models and their formats.

summary The process of projecting 3D scenes onto a two-dimensional (2D) surface results in the loss of depth cues, which are essential for immersive experience in the scenes. Various solutions are provided to address this problem, but there are still fundamental issues need to be addressed in the existing approaches for compensating the change in the 2D image due to the change in observer’s position. Existing studies use head-coupled perspective, stereoscopy, and motion parallax methods to achieve a realistic image representation but a true natural image could not be perceived because of the inaccuracy in the calculations. This paper describes in detail an implementation method of the technique to correctly project a 3D virtual environment model onto a 2D surface to yield a more natural interaction with the virtual world. The proposed method overcomes the inaccuracies in the existing head-coupled perspective viewing and can be used with common stereoscopic displays to naturally represent virtual architecture.

summary The paper compares the implications of glitch aesthetics as an alternative digital design process to the more the commonly used algorithmic processes. It will argue the synthetic nature of architectural production in the digital age is used typically to privilege the representation of form through lines and curves, while the production of glitches rely on the image. This reliance on the image means that the pixel comes to the forefront as a possible new medium of architectural drawing. summary This paper discusses an approach to adapting trabecular bone structures for the design of complex architectural components exemplified through structural nodes. Based on the paradigm shift in additive fabrication, namely the ability to print structural metals, this paper identifies new methods for architectural and structural design that allow to create porous, intricate architectural components. Those components are designed in analogy to bone structures. The paper presents a metaball-based application, programmed in Processing, which allows creating n-legged nodes using parametric gradient maps. The approach aims at reduction of weight and waste, while exploring the novel aesthetic properties of such bio-constructed networks.

summary Architectural programming, although a key part of AECFM processes, has not been well integrated into Building Information Modeling (BIM). Having access to architectural programming information throughout the lifecycle of a building can add value to design evaluation, facility management, renovation and extension. There is not currently a comprehensive and standard data model to store architectural programming information. Our research is producing a universal format for an architectural program of requirements (UFPOR) that can connect the architectural programming information to the IFC BIM schema. The result is a data model for architectural programming that is inherently interoperable with BIM standard schema. A graphical user interface facilitates data creation and manipulation. The schema and effectiveness of the bridging fields has been tested by entering the content of three two different architectural programming documents into the UFPOR database.

summary An algorithm is a process of addressing a problem in a finite number of steps. In the context of architectural design, algorithmic thinking means taking on an interpretive role to understand the results in relation to design criteria, knowing how to modify the code to explore new options, and speculating on further design potentials. The application of algorithms within architecture often addresses the developed design stages, primarily to optimise structure, test environmental performance or to resolve complex construction. This research aims to explore algorithmic tools with a focus on early stage design. This design stage is often developed using traditional processes and is where algorithmic applications have been less successfully executed. The objectives are to algorithmically explore the areas of space planning, programme layout, form finding and form optimisation within early stage architectural design. Through the combination of a range of diverse algorithms, this research has an ultimate aim of integrating a computational workflow into practice at the early design stage.

Modular curiosity-based machine learning behaviour is supported by a highly distributed system of microprocessor hardware integrated within interlinked cellular arrays of sound, light, kinetic actuators and proprioreceptive sensors in a resilient physical scaffolding system. The curiosity-based system involves exploration by employing an expert system composed of archives of information from preceding behaviours, calculating potential behaviours together with locations and applications, executing behaviour and comparing result to prediction. Prototype architectural structures entitled Sentient Canopy and Sentient Chamber developed during 2015 and 2016 were developed to support this interactive behaviour, integrating new communications protocols and firmware, and a hybrid proprioreceptive system that configured new electronics with sound, light, and motion sensing capable of internal machine sensing and externally- oriented sensing for human interaction. Proprioreception was implemented by producing custom electronics serving photoresistors, pitch-sensing microphones, and accelerometers for motion and position, coupled to sound, light and motion-based actuators and additional infrared sensors designed for sensing of human gestures. This configuration provided the machine system with the ability to calculate and detect real-time behaviour and to compare this to models of behaviour predicted within scripted routines. Testbeds located at the Living Architecture Systems Group/Philip Beesley Architect Inc. (LASG/PBAI, Waterloo/Toronto), Centre for Information Technology (CITA, Copenhagen) National Academy of Sciences (NAS) in Washington DC are illustrated.
