summary Urban futures are typically conceptualized as starting anew; an urban future is usually represented as a quest for an ideal state, replacing the status quo with visionary statement about ‘better’ futures. Repeatedly, propositions reinvent the way we live, work and play. The major urban innovations for the changing cityscape from the last 100 years, however, have opportunistically taken advantage of unprecedented technical developments in infrastructure rather than be drawn from architectural inventions in their right, such as telecommunications, services, utilities, point-to-point rapid transit including the elevator. Howard’s Garden City therefore presaged the suburb, just as Le Corbusier et al proposed the erasure of significant sections of inner city Barcelona and Paris to replace them with the newly contrived towers; the city reformed as the significantly more mobile and dense ‘Ville Radieuse’. More recently Masdar emerged from virgin sand and Milton Keynes from pristine pasture, serving as counterpoints to the paradigm of erasure and rebuild. Despite all these advances in technology and science, little has changed in the paradigm of urban form; the choices we have today are largely restricted to the suburban house or the apartment in the tower. Should the “next city” offer an alternative vision for the future, and what new design processes are required to realize the next city?

summary This paper describes a design approach for a new urban building typology for Shanghai utilizing a set of parametric design techniques to arrive at an alternative solution to current models of urbanization. The goal in this approach was to find a solution that is adaptable and sensitive to the urban environment and has the capacity to preserve historic urban street patterns. The approach included an understanding of the historic urban fabric of Shanghai, a respective plot analysis and the development of a computational method to produce a new urban type. The parametric set-up was build upon an analytical workflow with integrated feedback procedures that informed the design exploration and resulted in multiple design solutions.

summary This paper discusses an approach to adapting trabecular bone structures for the design of complex architectural components exemplified through structural nodes. Based on the paradigm shift in additive fabrication, namely the ability to print structural metals, this paper identifies new methods for architectural and structural design that allow to create porous, intricate architectural components. Those components are designed in analogy to bone structures. The paper presents a metaball-based application, programmed in Processing, which allows creating n-legged nodes using parametric gradient maps. The approach aims at reduction of weight and waste, while exploring the novel aesthetic properties of such bio-constructed networks.

summary The cognitive-theoretical foundation referring to teach drawing as a way of thinking, as well as the construction of the environment by means of drawing using transforming geometries and the formal and para-formal computational process, creating unusual geometries through generative design processes and methodologies, can be seen as some of the main possibilities in exploring dynamic experimental structures for an Adaptive Architecture. This article presents the development of a model for articulated facades, inspired by Hoberman´s Tessellates, and his Adaptive Building Initiative (ABI) project to develop facades models that respond in real time to environmental changes. In addition, we describe an experiment based on the retractable structures, inspired by Hoberman´s work and experimentations. Solutions for responsive facades can offer more flexible architectural solutions providing better use of natural light and contributing to saving energy. Using Rhinoceros and the Grasshopper for modeling and test the responsiveness, the parametric model was created to simulate geometric panels of hexagonal grids that would open and close in reaction to translational motion effects, regulating the amount of light that reaches the building.

summary This paper presents a workflow called the ‘heuristic optimization workflow’ that integrates Octopus, a Multi-Objective Optimization (MOO) engine with Grasshopper3D, a parametric modeling tool, and multiple simulation software. It describes a process that enables the designer to integrate disparate domains via Octopus and complete a feedback loop with the developed interactive, real-time visualization tools. A retrospective design of the Bow Tower in Calgary is used as a test case to study the impact of the developed workflow and tools, as well as the impact of MOO on the performance of the solutions. The overall workflow makes MOO based results more accessible to designers and encourages a more interactive ‘heuristic’ exploration of various geometric and topological trajectories. The workflow also reduces design decision uncertainty and design cycle latency through the incorporation of a feedback loop between geometric models and their associated quantitative data. It is through the juxtaposition of extreme performing solutions that serendipity is created and the potential for better multiple performing solutions is increased.es responsive systems, which focus on the implementation of multi-objective adaptive design prototypes from sensored environments. The intention of the work is to investigate multi-objective criteria both as a material system and as a processing system by creating prototypes with structural integrity, where the thermal energy flow through the prototype, to be understood as a membrane, can be controlled and the visual transparency altered. The work shows performance based feedback systems and physical prototype models driven by information streaming, screening, and application.

summary In the past years the creative industry has made great advancements in the area of robotics. Accessible robot simulation and control environments based on visual programming systems such as Grasshopper and Dynamo now allow even novice users to quickly and intuitively explore the potential of robotic fabrication, while expert users can use their programming knowledge to create complex, parametric robotic programs. The great advantage of using visual programming for robot control lies in the quick iterations that allow the user to change both geometry and toolpaths as well as machinic parameters and then simulate the results within a single environment. However, at the end of such an iterative optimization process the data is condensed into a robot control data file, which is then copied over to the robot and thus loses its parametric relationship with the code that generated it. In this research we present a newly developed system that allows a dynamic link between the robot and the controlling PC for parametrically adjusting robotic toolpaths and collecting feedback data from the robot itself - enabling entirely new approaches towards robotic fabrication by even more closely linking design and fabrication.

summary This paper presents part of CORK’EWS, a research work developed within the framework of the Digital Architecture Advanced Program 2012/13 at ISCTE-IUL. The main goal of this investigation was to develop a parametric, customizable and adaptive wall system designed for environmental performance. Moreover, the system is based on standard industrial products: expanded cork blocks produced by Amorim Insulation industries. CAD/CAM resources were the essential tools of the research process, where fundamental and practical knowledge is integrated to understand the microstructure morphological properties of the raw material – cork – and its derivate – natural expanded cork. These properties were upscale and adapted to create a wall with an optimized solar control environmental performance. The result is a digitally fabricated prototype of a new customizable industrial product, adaptable to specific environmental conditions and installation setups being therefore easily commercialized. From microstructural morphology to macroscale construction, the research explores new application possibilities through morphogenesis and opens new possible markets for these customizable products.

summary In this paper, we review and extend the idea of Alexander’s “pattern language”, especially from the viewpoints of complexity theories, information systems, and human-computer interaction, to explore spatial cognition-based design representations for “intelligent and adaptive/interactive environment” in architecture and urban planning. We propose a theoretic framework of design patterns “with spatial information processing”, and attempt to incorporate state-of-the-art computational methods of information visualization/visual analytics into the conventional CAAD approaches. Focused on the spatial-semantic analytics, together with abstract syntactic pattern representation, by using “spatial-semantic aware” graph grammar formalization, i.e., Spatial Graph Grammars (SGG), the relevant models, algorithms and tool are proposed. We testify our theoretic framework and computational tool VEGGIE (a Visual Environment of Graph Grammar Induction Engineering) by using actual architectural design works (spatial layout exemplars of a small office building and the three house projects by Frank Lloyd Wright) as study cases, so as to demonstrate our proposed approach for practical applications. The results are discussed and further research is suggested.

summary This study focuses on developing three-dimensional solar panels, as an alternative to traditional flat Photovoltaic (PV) surfaces in Building Integrated Photovoltaic (BIPV). We propose to increase the energy efficiency of buildings by using the entire envelope for energy production as well as by increasing the efficiency of solar energy output in orientations which were traditionally considered as non-ideal. The panels are constructed from Polycarbonate with integrated flexible photovoltaic film, solar paint or dye. The methodology included digital algorithm-based tools for achieving optimized variable three-dimensional surfaces according to local orientation and location, computational climatic simulations and comparative field tests. In addition, the structural, mechanical and thermal properties of the integration between flexible PV sheets and hard plastic curved panels were studied. Interim results demonstrate a potential improvement of 50-80% in energy production per building unit resulting from geometric variations per-se. The dependence of energy production by surface geometry was revealed and an optimized method for solar material distribution on the surface was proposed. A parametric digital tool for automatic generation of optimized three-dimensional panels was developed together with a database and material models of the optimized panels system.

summary This paper will outline the techniques and language that games use to give design agency to a player. By identifying the discrete combinatorial ontology of games, as opposed to a continuous post-rationalistic approach from general design tools, we hope to develop a framework for the design of ‘games for design’, or sandboxes that allow players to develop an output that is unexpected to the game developer and contingent to a player. This research has been the foundation for the development of Block’hood, a city-building video game that explores ideas of ecology and generative urbanism.

In proposing a cultural approach to architecture and urbanism in the sun over time, we aim to show how the built environment reflects and organizes at one and the same time our individual and social relation to solar radiation.

From the critique of the primacy of seeing, the experimental activity proposed a housing design process with a visually impaired person, using models, plants and tactile maps. Were investigated and compared the free use of materials and processes with the use of digital fabrication - MDF plates manufactured with a laser cutting machine. As a result, it is presented the tactile representation system developed in the activity.

summary This paper reports on the process and outcomes of a digital design studio that integrates parametric design and generative systems in architectural and urban design projects. It explores the interrelationship between the emergence of innovative formal representations using parametric design systems on the one hand, and design autonomy; more specifically the conscious process of generating and developing an architectural concept, on the other. Groups of undergraduate students working on an architectural project are asked to identify a specific conceptual parti that addresses an aspect of architectural quality, define strategies that satisfy those aspects, and computational methodologies to implement those strategies, such as rule-based systems, self-organization systems, and genetic algorithms. The paper describes the educational approach and studio outcomes, discusses implications for CAAD education and curricula, and addresses issues to be considered for parametric and generative software development.
