summary The research project proposes an online-controlled robotic process that allows for grading light in aggregate structures using photometric analysis. It investigates the potential of designing specific daylight qualities through the behaviour-based robotic fabrication of the aggregate system. Two key methods are developed: the digital fabrication of the structure and a photometric analysis technique which is used as a sensor input for the robotic sensory interface. In its first part, the paper presents a series of photometric experiments on aggregate wall- and dome-structures. In its second part, the focus is laid on robotic manufacturing of these aggregate structures and the interactive fabrication of specific light conditions. To conclude further areas of research into emergent design processes with aggregates are outlined.

summary The paper analyzes the theoretical and methodological approach of contemporary urban design associated to digital processes. This new approach to urban studies is based on parametric design systems in which the focus of interest is not in the form itself, but the parameters that generate it. As an alternative to traditional design system, this methodology provides greater control of the entire process, since the parameters can be changed during all stages of the work. Thus, this paper presents some cases to understand the advantages and disadvantages of using this new way of designing on urban scale.

summary Cellular automata offer a compelling model for complex generative design. However, the abstraction of classical cellular automata models hinders their application in the design process, particularly at small scales where regular grid matrices do not provide an adequate approximation. This paper presents some tests in appling these generative properties to a real site using irrregular tesselation adapted to the terrain and an spreadsheet interface that translate design concerns into set of neighborhood and state behaviors with the goal of generating massing diagrams for an urban masterplan. The development of the model over time is also presented as a visual reference that aids in comparing different parameter sets and informing the design process.

summary Development in the study of city expansion, through biomorphic generation, could potentially assist in the design of a transportation system that will accommodate expansion whilst contributing to an ecologically balanced growth. This paper focuses on a section of a design framework which looks at how generative systems can be implemented in an architectural design of a transportation network that will respond to the site’s projected future growth. This paper suggests that by integrating biomorphic generative systems into the design process we can generate designs that respond to the surrounding context and urban growth.

summary This paper reports on the process and outcomes of a digital design studio that integrates parametric design and generative systems in architectural and urban design projects. It explores the interrelationship between the emergence of innovative formal representations using parametric design systems on the one hand, and design autonomy; more specifically the conscious process of generating and developing an architectural concept, on the other. Groups of undergraduate students working on an architectural project are asked to identify a specific conceptual parti that addresses an aspect of architectural quality, define strategies that satisfy those aspects, and computational methodologies to implement those strategies, such as rule-based systems, self-organization systems, and genetic algorithms. The paper describes the educational approach and studio outcomes, discusses implications for CAAD education and curricula, and addresses issues to be considered for parametric and generative software development.

summary An algorithm is a process of addressing a problem in a finite number of steps. In the context of architectural design, algorithmic thinking means taking on an interpretive role to understand the results in relation to design criteria, knowing how to modify the code to explore new options, and speculating on further design potentials. The application of algorithms within architecture often addresses the developed design stages, primarily to optimise structure, test environmental performance or to resolve complex construction. This research aims to explore algorithmic tools with a focus on early stage design. This design stage is often developed using traditional processes and is where algorithmic applications have been less successfully executed. The objectives are to algorithmically explore the areas of space planning, programme layout, form finding and form optimisation within early stage architectural design. Through the combination of a range of diverse algorithms, this research has an ultimate aim of integrating a computational workflow into practice at the early design stage.

summary In the past years the creative industry has made great advancements in the area of robotics. Accessible robot simulation and control environments based on visual programming systems such as Grasshopper and Dynamo now allow even novice users to quickly and intuitively explore the potential of robotic fabrication, while expert users can use their programming knowledge to create complex, parametric robotic programs. The great advantage of using visual programming for robot control lies in the quick iterations that allow the user to change both geometry and toolpaths as well as machinic parameters and then simulate the results within a single environment. However, at the end of such an iterative optimization process the data is condensed into a robot control data file, which is then copied over to the robot and thus loses its parametric relationship with the code that generated it. In this research we present a newly developed system that allows a dynamic link between the robot and the controlling PC for parametrically adjusting robotic toolpaths and collecting feedback data from the robot itself - enabling entirely new approaches towards robotic fabrication by even more closely linking design and fabrication.

summary As computation and robotics become more prevalent in all aspects of architecture, their impact on education assumes greater importance. The paper presents the outcomes of a collaborative undergraduate architectural design studio that investigates the realms of architectural robotics and computation by stepping into the fecund intersections between multiple disciplines. The pedagogical prototype, Unsolicited: An Inconvenient Studio, broadly focused on the topics of robotics and responsive architectures. The notion of robotics was interpreted to include a range of robotic technologies and their formal manifestations in the form of biomorphic, mechanomorphic, polymorphic, and amorphic robots, and interactive architecture. Taught using a recently developed framework that focuses on self-organizing systems and the creation of innovative technology-driven design entrepreneurs rather than merely on the creation of designed artefacts, students found themselves not only innovating with new digital technologies but also bridging architecture, urbanism and computer science. The paper describes the pedagogy, processes, and outcomes of the studio.

summary The noted 19th century biologist, Ernst Haeckel, put forward the idea that the growth (ontogenesis) of an organism recapitulated the history of its evolutionary development. While this idea is defunct within biology, the idea has been promoted in areas such as education (the idea of an education being the repetition of the civilizations before). In the research presented in this paper, recapitulation is used as a metaphor within computer-aided design as a way of grouping together different generations of spatial layouts. In most CAD programs, a spatial layout is represented as a series of objects (lines, or boundary representations) that stand in as walls. The relationships between spaces are not usually explicitly stated. A representation using Lindenmayer Systems (originally designed for the purpose of modelling plant morphology) is put forward as a way of representing the morphology of a spatial layout. The aim of this research is not just to describe an individual layout, but to find representations that link together lineages of development. This representation can be used in generative design as a way of creating more meaningful layouts which have particular characteristics. The use of genetic operators (mutation and crossover) is also considered, making this representation suitable for use with genetic algorithms.

summary Digital design/fabrication is slowly emancipating architectural design from its traditional static/representational role and endowing it instead with a new, generative function. In opposition to the classical isomorphism between drawings and buildings, wherein the second stand as translations of the first, the digital design/fabrication scenario does not strictly fall within a semiotic frame as much as within a quasi biological context, reminiscent of the Aristotelian notion of entelechy. For the digital data does not represent the building as much it actively works to become the building itself. Only upon sending a given file to a machine does the building begin to materialize as an empirical reality, And eventually a habitable space as we empirically know it. And until the digital data actualizes itself, the building qua building is no more than one single, potential possibility among many others. This new universe of digital design/fabrication does not only cause buildings to be produced as quick, precise, multiply-generated objects but also reduces their presence as original entities. Like cars and fashion items, built structures will soon be manufactured as routinely-consumed items that would look original only through the subtle mechanisms of flexibility: frequent alteration of prototype design (Style 2010, Style 2015..) and “perpetual profiling” (mine, yours, hers,..). The generic will necessarily take over the circumstantial. But this truth will be veiled since “customized prototypes” will be produced or altered to individual or personal specifications. This implies that certain “myths” have to be generated to speed up consumption, to stimulate excessive use and to lock people into a continuous system which can generate consumption through a vocabulary of interchangeable, layered and repeatable functions. Samples of “next season’s buildings” will be displayed and disseminated to enforce this strategy of stimulating and channeling desire. A degree of manipulation is involved, and the consumer is flattered into believing that his or her own free assessment of and choice between the options on offer will lead him or her to select the product the advertiser is seeking to sell. From the standpoint of the architect as a maker, the rising upsurge of digital design and fabrication could leave us mourning the loss of what has been a personal stomping ground, namely the intensity of the directly lived experiences of design and building. The direct, sensuous contact with drawings, models and materials is now being lost to a (digital) realm whose attributes refer to physical reality only remotely. Unlike (analogue) drawings and buildings, digital manipulations and prototypes do not exercise themselves in a real space, and are not subjected in the most rigorous way to spatial information. They denote in this sense a loss of immediacy and a withering of corporal thought. This flexible production of space and the consequent loss of immediate experience from the part of the designer will be analyzed within a theoretical framework underpinned mainly by the works of Walter Benjamin. Samples of digitally-produced objects will be used to illustrate this argument.

It proposes a purpose and context fit approach towards the automation of urban data generation based on GIS tools and New Urbanism typologies. summary This paper describes the concept of integrating several complexity evaluation methods, previously developed and tested by the authors, into one product configurator through a technical prototype. In this case variations of an online configurator for design products based on a choice of these digital complexity evaluation methods developed between 2015 and 2020 are presented. This research shows that an integration of complexity evaluation for several Gestalt qualities in one product configurator is feasible, though the amount of aspects of each of these qualities and the necessary effort to be invested to achieve an integration that is suitable for customer use may vary. The concept is illustrated using a simple test case, i.e. an online shelf configurator.

summary Performance-based architecture has predominately been influenced by computational advances in simulating complex organizations. The advent of 3D printing, however, has introduced a new approach to generate complex forms, which is redirecting focus from shape-centric design to material design, namely, innovative structures and properties generated by the process itself. This article investigated the multiscale approach potential to design using extrusion-based 3D printing techniques that offer novel geometric organizations that conform to desired performance. It was found that 3D printed toolpaths adapted to extrusion-based systems render an anisotropic behavior to the architectural object that is best optimized by designing tessellated surfaces as the primary structural shape from which small-scale periodic surfaces can be embedded within a larger geometric system.

summary The prevalent mode of shape grammar output is a two-dimensional drawing grammar. For architectural applications, these two- dimensional shape rules can hold a variety of interpretations in three-dimensional space. This work translates an existing grammar from a manual two-dimensional drawing grammar to an automated three-dimensional building grammar to explore the challenges and opportunities that this translation suggests in the larger context of shape computation. The case study considered here is a grammar interpreting John Portman’s architectural language as defined by the house Portman identifies as emblematic of his design principles, his 1964 personal residence Entelechy I.

summary This article focuses on the use of computational tools to provide dynamic assessment and optimized arrangements while planning and discussing interventions in urban areas. The objective is to address the use of algorithmic systems for evaluating and generating urban morphologies guided by Transit Oriented Development (TOD) principles. TOD is an urban development model that considers geometric and measurable parameters for designing sustainable cities. It advocates the creation of compact mixed-use neighborhoods within walking distance to a variety of transportation options and amenities, seeking to result on optimized infrastructure provision and energy efficient low-carbon districts. This paper presents algorithmic experiments for proposing a rapid-transit district, by the optimization of its urban morphology and services’ location, providing an accurate and efficient TOD principles-oriented modelling.

summary There has been a recent increase in the exploration of mereological systems, speculating on how digital design, assembly and reconfiguration of digital materials (Gershenfeld, 2015) enables digitally informed physical worlds that change over time. Besides opportunities for construction and design automation, there is a potential to reimagine how multiple stakeholders can participate in the computational decision-making process, using the benefits of the mass customization of logistics (Retsin, 2019). This paper presents a research-by-design project that applies a digital and discrete material system to high-rise housing in Hong Kong. The project has developed an integrated approach to design, construction, and inhabitation, using a system of discrete parts which can be assembled in various apartment configurations, to incorporate varying occupants requirements and facilitate negotiations and changes over time.

summary Working with and against environmental processes, such as the movement of water, earth, and rock, and terrain, has been a perpetual challenge since the dawn of civilisation. While it has been possible to gradually tame many landscapes to perform in a predictable manner, there are many circumstances where we are forced to live with and around such processes in everyday life. This research is primarily interested in the potential of design to interact with such processes. Specifically, we are interested in the designed redirection of erosion and landslide processes already observable in nature, taking the urbanised hillsides of the Alps as test case scenario. The research specialisation continues a research and design focus specialised on processes material deposition of river and flood systems, further down the water catchment chain (REF: ANON 2012). This specific alpine research is compelling in the context of Anthropocene processes, we are specifically focussed in the appraisal, harnessing and redirection of existing environmental phenomena, given what can be understood as our inevitable interaction with these processes (Sijmons 2015). Within this broader research, which has ecological, cultural, and formal potential, this paper shall explore the practical aspects of connecting design, and the designer, with the potential for understanding and designing these evolving mountain landscapes. There is a long history behind the development of landscape elements which control avalanches, mud, rock, and landslides. The cultural, functional and aesthetic role of such elements in the landscape is relatively undiscussed, epitomising an approach that is primarily pragmatic in both engineering and expense. It is perhaps no surprise that these elements have a dominant physical and visual presence in the contemporary landscape. Through the investigation of synergies with other systems, interests, and design potential for such landscape elements, it is proposed that new potential can be found in their implementation. This research proposes that the intuitive linking of common design software to direct landslide simulation, design of and cultural use can interact with these natural processes. This paper shall demonstrate methods to within which design can enter the process of landscape management, linking the modelling processes of the landscape designer with the simulation capabilities of the specialised engineer.

summary This paper presents the progress of a pilot classroom, which uses mobile devices to enhance instructor-student classroom interac- tions and students’ learning of the History of Art and Architecture. The main objective of this research was to find a way of improving classroom activities, for the coming year, by making the best possible use of technology to enable students to learn more successfully and improve their understanding of the lesson content. In this paper, class- room activities during 2014 and 2015 are analysed using the SAMR Model coupled with Bloom’s revised taxonomy and the EdTech Quin- tet Model. In addition, a plan for the redesign and improvement of ac- tivities in 2016 is proposed, the effectiveness of the SAMR model at improving in class activities is discussed and a perspective on how to develop the classroom using the “SAMR ladder” is included. The re- sults show that in 2015, 25% of the students in the class achieved an A grade, and less than 5% were graded F compared to 26% in 2012.

summary Today, human activities constitute the primary environmental impact on the planet. In this context, commitments to sustainability, or minimization of damage, prove insufficient. To develop regenerative, futuring capabilities, architectural design needs to extend beyond the form and function of things and engage with the management of complex systems. Such systems involve multiple types of dynamic phenomena – biotic and abiotic, technical and cultural – and can be understood as living. Engagement with such living systems implies manipulation of pervasive and unceasing change, irrespective of whether it is accepted by design stakeholders or actively managed towards homeostatic or homeorhetic conditions. On one hand, such manipulation of continuity requires holistic and persistent design involvements that are beyond natural capabilities of human designers. On the other hand, practical, political or creative implications of reliance on automated systems capable of tackling such tasks is as yet underexplored. In response to this challenge, this paper considers an experimental approach that utilised methods of critical making and speculative designing to explore potentials of autonomous architecture. This approach combined 1) knowledge of animal architecture that served as a lens for rethinking human construction and as a source of alternative design approaches; 2) practices of creative computing that supported speculative applications of data-driven and performance-oriented design; and 3) techniques of robotics and mechatronics that produced working prototypes of autonomous devices that served as props for critical thinking about alternative futures.
