summary For architects, a database of typological specific occupant behaviour patterns could help in the design of buildings, through a typological specific insight into the previous use of buildings. In addition, appropriately represented occupant behaviour data in commercial buildings represent an important factor for facilities management (FM) and business information (BI) teams in the assessment the operational performance of the enterprise. Building Information Models (BIM) could provide an appropriate reference for this user data. However the mapping of user behaviour data to the BIM models is unclear. This paper presents a ‘designGhost’ information system to support the mapping of occupant behaviour to BIM models, so that the user data can be represented to the different stakeholders. To test the information system a prototype tool is presented to enable the mapping of the building use (designGhost) data to the building’s spaces in order to support architects in the design stage and to support navigation from an operational (FM/BI) perspective. This paper addressees the challenges of developing such a system and proposes directions for future work.

summary The complexity of today´s architecture solutions brings the need to integrate, in the design process, digital tools for creation, visualization, representation and evaluation of design solutions. This paper proposes the adoption of a new Virtual Reality (VR) tool, referred to as VIARmodes, to support the architectural design process with an improved communication across different specialities, towards the facilitation of the project decision process. This tool allows a complete visualization of the design, specifically useful during the detailed design phase, including the architecture design and of other engineering specialities, progressively and interactively adapting the project visualization to the information needed for each discipline. With a set of 3 different visualization modes simulated in real scale within a Virtual Environment (VE), and adopting natural human-computer interaction by using speech, the system allows a team of architect and engineers, to visualize and interact with the proposed design during a collaborative design brief. We carried a usability evaluation study with 12 architects. The study showed that the tool was perceived to be effective and its use efficient during the design process, especially during the detailed design phase.

summary This paper presents a novel platform, ModRule, designed and developed to promote and facilitate collaboration between architects and future occupants during the design stage of mass housing buildings. Architects set the design-framework and parameters of the system, which allows the users to set their space requirements, budgets, etc., and define their desired way of living. The system utilizes gamification methodologies as a reference to promote incentives and user-friendliness for the layperson who has little or no architectural background. This enhanced integration of a both bottom-up approach (user-centric/player) with a top-down approach (architect-centric/game-maker) will greatly influence how architects design high rise living. By bridging the gap between the architect and the user, this development aims to instill a greater sense of belonging to people, as well as providing architects with a better understanding of how to give people more control over their living spaces. The paper also presents an evaluation of a design process that employed ModRule.

summary Being overwhelmed by computing technologies, we are forwarding more and more of our skills into area of "thinking by head". Our designing capabilities are turning into capabilities of "how to work with very intelligent technology". The processes of human brain, nevertheless, are different to the processes in computer. Designers are said to think by hand. As architects we are looking for final forms that not only fulfil the technical requirements, but are beautiful as well. Therefore sketching is one of the skills that belongs to an architect in order to design and particularly to work in a team. The workshop will accordingly focus on sketching on electronic devices in comparison with sketching on paper. Is it actually possible to switch to tablets when sketching? If yes, which application is the best to use? In order to find that out, there will be a test of three applications: ColLab Sketch, Queeky and FlockDraw. The participants will be sketching on-line and helping to find the best way of communication by sketch. By drawing they will become a part of the research, their work will be post-produced and exhibited at the welcome dinner.

summary In this paper we proposed a visual perception analysis to be used as a methodology for the evaluation, communication and design of places. The work was applied for the urgent challenge of re-thinking industrial areas which characterize the visual landscape of numerous urban fringes. We used simulation of the present and future of heritage as a design, evaluation and communication device. The experimental focuses on visual analysis techniques for mapping current conditions of the image of productive landscapes. In particular, 2-D digital maps, 3-D digital urban modelling, spherical panoramic pictures, cylindrical videos, Google Maps and Street View, and a post-processing work on photography and models were tested on an industrial area located in the urban fringe of Milan characterized by the diffused presence of productive landscapes.

summary Over the past decade, ‘smart’ cities have capitalized on new technologies and insights to transform their systems, operations and services. The rationale behind the use of these technologies is that an evidence-based, analytical approach to decision-making will lead to more robust and sustainable outcomes. However, harvesting high-quality data from the dense network of sensors embedded in the urban infrastructure, and combining this data with social network data, poses many challenges. In this paper, we investigate the use of an intelligent middleware – Device Nimbus – to support data capture and analysis techniques to inform urban planning and design. We report results from a ‘Living Campus’ experiment at the University of Melbourne, Australia focused on a public learning space case study. Local perspectives, collected via crowdsourcing, are combined with distributed and heterogeneous environmental sensor data. Our analysis shows that Device Nimbus’ data integration and intelligent modules provide high-quality support for decision-making and planning.

summary This applied research brings together the performance analysis of a building's micro-scale and urban-infrastructure's macro-scale. A New York City lot, is serving as the background of experimentation with parametric design, performance simulation, data analysis and visualization. The paper describes the process of integrating design intentions, location parameters, climate data, material properties, and space quality and sustainability metrics into one platform. Although in-depth domain knowledge is irreplaceable, the paper argues that the exploration into contemporary, easily accessible and algorithmic simulation software, provides a unique educational opportunity for architects and students to integrate performance driven design in their every-day practice, and become aware of the consequences of their design on urban infrastructure systems. This allows them to reduce the time frame between design iterations and performance evaluation for the benefit of better informed decisions.

summary The discourse to mould Building Information Modelling (BIM) into the early architecture education has been escalated in many scholar papers and discussions. Scenarios are made to obtain optimum educational deliverance. However, the response from students’ perspective to the outlined subject has not been reviewed in terms of their competences, especially in Indonesian higher education where architectural computing education is relatively new. After BIM is delivered in two semesters span in the early stage at Bina Nusantara University, Faculty of Engineering, Architecture Department, survey is conducted to depict their understanding. This article is the feedback report, which shows that the students were self-convinced to the potential of BIM and its future. In achieving that particular level, the combination of various delivery methods is the utmost strategy to accompany the design studio with BIM.

summary Architectural survey is an evolving field in architecture that has been affected during the past decades by the technological advancements in the field of 3D data acquisition. Data acquired from laser scanning and photogrammetry, for the purposes of documentation can be integrated in the BIM data base of the project and contribute as the first stage in the sustainable process of building reuse and retrofit and for an appropriate design intervention for a building under preservation. This paper presents the case study of the documentation and design intervention of a building under preservation in Ramat Gan, Israel. All phases of the design process were integrated into a comprehensive BIM data base: the digital documentation of the building, through laser scanning and photogrammetry, the architectural geometry, the structural information, the HVAC and electrical planning. This case-study demonstrates how the compilation of the various phases in a BIM database facilitated a smooth workflow in a complicated project under preservation, allowed for an immediate coordination between the various consultants and resulted in a non-invasive design intervention.

summary This paper describes the development of a sentient canopy that interacts with human visitors by using its own internal motivation. Modular curiosity-based machine learning behaviour is supported by a highly distributed system of microprocessor hardware integrated within interlinked cellular arrays of sound, light, kinetic actuators and proprioreceptive sensors in a resilient physical scaffolding system. The curiosity-based system involves exploration by employing an expert system composed of archives of information from preceding behaviours, calculating potential behaviours together with locations and applications, executing behaviour and comparing result to prediction. Prototype architectural structures entitled Sentient Canopy and Sentient Chamber developed during 2015 and 2016 were developed to support this interactive behaviour, integrating new communications protocols and firmware, and a hybrid proprioreceptive system that configured new electronics with sound, light, and motion sensing capable of internal machine sensing and externally- oriented sensing for human interaction. Proprioreception was implemented by producing custom electronics serving photoresistors, pitch-sensing microphones, and accelerometers for motion and position, coupled to sound, light and motion-based actuators and additional infrared sensors designed for sensing of human gestures. This configuration provided the machine system with the ability to calculate and detect real-time behaviour and to compare this to models of behaviour predicted within scripted routines. Testbeds located at the Living Architecture Systems Group/Philip Beesley Architect Inc. (LASG/PBAI, Waterloo/Toronto), Centre for Information Technology (CITA, Copenhagen) National Academy of Sciences (NAS) in Washington DC are illustrated.

summary Digital representation is an important resource for the architect’s work in all project stages. The use of appropriate representations facilitates proper interpretation of the project, resulting in more accurate design decisions. This article presents the entire process and the results of a n academic research that developed a digital library that contains 25 species of trees, easily found in Curitiba streets. It also describes the methodology that was built throughout the study, which focuses on a production of representations that do not depend on special talent or personal drawing characteristics. Finally, it shows the produced representations and provides a brief analysis of the results.

summary This paper was motivated by Frey and Osborne’s [1] work about the probability of different occupations being computerised in the near future, titled “The Future of Employment”. In their study, the architect’s profession had a very low probability of being automated, which does not do justice to the past fifty years of research in the field of architectural design automation. After reviewing some concepts in economics and labor, and identifying three categories of tasks in regards to automation, we propose a new estimate, by looking independently at 30 architectural tasks. We also took into account the reported advances in the automation of these tasks through scientific research. We conclude that there is presently a change in skill requirements for architects, suggesting that we have to rethink architectural education, so architects will not need to compete against the computer in the near future.

summary This thesis presents a system that uses games. It allows people to participate in the process of designing an architectural space. The site for the design project of this experimental methodology is a courtyard on MIT campus.The games are initially prepared by the architect through sampling various objects, materials, lighting, and figures from different media such as photogrammetric models around the building site and other relevant 3D modeling/animation contents. The goal of this design system is to collage those components into a final architectural form through a democratic process.The games are distributed to students, faculty and staff who will be the users of the space being designed. Through playing these games, they provide preference about the architectural program and various design decisions regarding formal composition, details, and finishes. This crowd-sourcing occurs both implicitly and explicitly while the game is being played, and the collected feed-back informs the architect about design development.This thesis questions the role of the architects in a democratic process of design: Are we the designer of the space, or creator of a system that controls the design process?.

summary Existing performance-based design exploration methods typically suffer from a lack of real-time feedback and a lack of actionable feedback. This paper proposes a hybrid design exploration method that overcomes these issues by combining parametric modelling, surrogate modelling, and evolutionary algorithms. The proposed method is structured as a mixed-initiative approach, in which parametric modelling is the key to creating a synergistic relationship between the architect and the computational system. Surrogate-based techniques will address the issue of real-time feedback, the evolutionary exploration techniques will address the issue of actionable feedback. As a first stage in developing the PEX method, this paper reports on two experiments conducted to identify an appropriate surrogate modelling technique that is efficient and robust.

summary In property development, the view quality contributes significantly to the property value. In many cases, the architect is constrained by the property developer to take full advantage of the view by designing large glazed facades ignoring the consequence on the energy consumption of the building caused by the conflicting orientation of the view. This paper presents a design tool to help the architect interactively explore different building and window geometries that trade-off energy consumption (kWh) and view quality (€). This design tool allows interaction with parametric building geometry, simulation of energy consumption and view quality, and an optimisation search engine. The simulation of the view quality quantifies a view according to the visibility and quality of its contents by using a novel view-scoring method. The design tool is tested with both north-oriented and south-oriented views and produces a Pareto front from which resulting geometries are visualised.

summary With an exponential increase in the possibilities of computation and computer-controlled fabrication, high density information is becoming a reality in digital design and architecture. However, construction methods and industrial fabrication processes have not yet been reshaped to accommodate the recent changes in those disciplines. Although it is possible to build up complex simulations with millions of particles, the simulation is often disconnected from the actual fabrication process. Our research proposes a bridge between both stages, where one drives the other, producing a smooth transition from design to production. A particle in the digital domain becomes a drop of material in the construction method.The architect's medium of expression has become much more than a representational tool in the last century, and more recently it has evolved even beyond a series of rules to drive from design to production. The design system is the instruction itself; embedding structure, material and tectonics and gets delivered to the very end of the construction chain, where it gets materialised. The research showcased in this paper investigates tectonic systems associated with large scale 3D printing and additive manufacturing methods, inheriting both material properties and fabrication constraints at all stages from design to production. Computational models and custom design software packages are designed and developed as strategies to organise material in space in response to specific structural and logistical input.Although the research has developed a wide spectrum of 3D printing methods, this paper focuses only on two of the most recent projects, where different material and computational logics were investigated. The first, titled Filamentrics, intends to develop free-form space frames, overcoming their homogeneity by introducing robotic plastic extrusion. Through the use of custom made extruders a vast range of high resolution prototypes were developed, evolving the design process towards the fabrication of precise structures that can be materialised using additive manufacturing but without the use of a layered 3D printing method. Instead, material limitations were studied and embedded in custom algorithms that allow depositing material in the air for internal connectivity. The final result is a 3x2x2.5m structure that demonstrates the viability of this construction method for being implemented in more industrial scenarios.While Filamentrics is reshaping the way we could design and build light weight structures, the second project Microstrata aims to establish new construction methods for compression based materials. A layering 3D printing method combines both the deposition of the binder and the distribution of an interconnected network of capillaries. These capillaries are organised following structural principles, configuring a series of channels which are left empty within the mass. In a second stage aluminium is cast in this hollow space to build a continuous tension reinforcement.

summary Montevideo has a new visitor. In the heritage building of the german architect Karl Trambauer, located in the Old City, a new presence was installed filling the vacuum left by its former collapsed dome, seeking to restore a message, adding a new vision and recovering the lost dialogue between the architecture, the city and its inhabitants. This paper summarizes and explains the experience of the workshop Adaptation 2015, held on September 2015 at the Universidad de la República, Uruguay. Exposing the theoretical framework, design strategies, morphogenetic development, digital manufacturing experimentations, conclusions and open questions from the experience made. We will go through this temporary intervention on Trambauer’s building, being a rare but symbiotic object, with parametric genes, digital and handcrafted manufacture, and also looking for the impact of theory and academic practices in the city.

summary This paper discusses the use of parametrization and digital fabrication in architecture proposing a shift from increasing the architect’s control over the final product (determinist paradigm), towards increasing users' interaction. It presents the design process of an experimental interactive object intended to meet the former discussion and test the limits and difficulties that might arise during the process. Such an object was developed by Lagear (UFMG), as a response to the exhibition Homo Faber: Digital Fabrication in Latin America, CAAD FUTURES 2015.
