summary Masonry Unit Database (MUD) is an integral part of Building Information Modeling for Masonry (BIM-M) initiative. MUD provides a data structure framework for storing the required data for digital representation of masonry units. Specific information about masonry units such as price, geometry and physical properties is needed throughout the lifecycle of a building project, including the design, construction, maintenance, and demolition stages. The development of MUD contributes to enhancement of masonry BIM tools for practitioners to incorporate up-to-date masonry product information into their projects. There are five main stages in the development of MUD: development of process map of masonry building project lifecycle, data requirement identification, physical design of database, design of data import structures, and finally design of data export structures. This paper focuses on the development of the SQL based MUD, and a Revit-Dynamo data export plugin for this database. The developed plugin is especially beneficial as it provides a tool for fast and accurate generation of the parametric and data enhanced masonry units as Revit families on the fly from the stored dimensions and attributes in the database. The generated masonry units with this method would be embedded in masonry wall systems in BIM building project.

summary The article describes the theoretical approach for the development of computational representations of masonry walls based on the concept of regions. A masonry region is intended to support the description of various levels of detail pertaining to a masonry wall assembly, capturing the evolution and complexity of design information from early conceptual stages down to construction and operation. Since different wall types are characterized by a different set of domain-specific requirements, a special emphasis is put on a flexible strategy for classification of different types of view-dependent masonry regions. This classification will provide the foundation upon which masonry specific parametric modeling and rule-checking applications can be elaborated in the future. It will also provide the basis for the definition of model views necessary for particular data queries and exchanges between design stakeholders. The article introduces the concept of regions, and discusses its implications and future steps.

summary The basic concept of BIM is a consistent 3D model of buildings containing all main data as base for collaboration for all disciplines. Since BIM-software is normally run on single workstations, the potential for direct collaboration is somehow limited. The focus of our ongoing research is to overcome these restrictions and to provide a platform for development and optimization by combining BIM and Virtual Reality (VR), linking BIM (Revit) with VR (COVISE). Projects as well as data can be visualized in VR and reviewed 1:1 scale even in team meetings. Compared to various existing approaches, our new approach is to have bidirectional data exchange between the systems. Changes in Revit are directly reflected in VR and vice versa, continuously updating the model and its underlying database. We have been able to implement a range of interactions, however it's still a long way to identify further useful interactions and to implement them.

summary This article discusses the development of a Speech Oriented Graphics Interface embedded in CAD and BIM software. The aim is to provide the means to work with complex 3D BIM models with minimal touch operations. We can cite the growing need for tools and user interfaces to assist designers in handling complex models, minimizing the risk of producing changes accidentally. In this area, the integration of a graphical database in BIM applications can be seen as an advantage over traditional CAD applications. However, we can note a difficulty in this integration, due to the need to maintain the constant levels of mental concentration required in order to effectively manage a larger inter-connected graphical database. Specifically in this area, voice interfaces can help by avoiding the need of "touch" to work with the 3D models, looking for improving its robustness and consistency. In addition, SR is used in order to reduce cognitive stress among the users, trying eliminating the need to memorize and remember commands, names and locations in GUI interfaces.

summary Within the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry, the application of multidisciplinary optimization methods has been shown to reach significant improvements in building performance compared to conventional design methods. As a result, the use of multidisciplinary optimization in the process of design is growing and becoming a common method that provides desired performance feedback for decision making. However, there is a lack of BIM-based multidisciplinary optimization tools that use the rich information stored in Building Information Models (BIM) to help designers explore design alternatives across multiple competing design criteria. In this paper we introduce Optimo, an open-source visual programming-based Multi-Objective Optimization (MOO) tool, which is developed to parametrically interact with Autodesk Revit for BIM-based optimization. The paper details the development process of Optimo and also provides the initial validation of its results using optimization test functions. Finally, strengths, limitations, current adoption by academia and industry, and future improvements of Optimo for building performance optimization are discussed.

summary Architectural programming, although a key part of AECFM processes, has not been well integrated into Building Information Modeling (BIM). Having access to architectural programming information throughout the lifecycle of a building can add value to design evaluation, facility management, renovation and extension. There is not currently a comprehensive and standard data model to store architectural programming information. Our research is producing a universal format for an architectural program of requirements (UFPOR) that can connect the architectural programming information to the IFC BIM schema. The result is a data model for architectural programming that is inherently interoperable with BIM standard schema. A graphical user interface facilitates data creation and manipulation. The schema and effectiveness of the bridging fields has been tested by entering the content of three two different architectural programming documents into the UFPOR database.

summary Early design phase energy modelling is used to provide the design team with feedback about the impact of various building configurations. For better energy-conscious and sustainable building design and operation, the construction of BIM data interoperability for energy performance assessment in the early design phase is important. The purpose of this study is to suggest a development of BIM data interoperability for energy performance assessment based on BIM. To archive this, the authors have investigated advantages of BIM-based energy performance assessment through comparison with traditional energy performance assessment; and suggest requirements for development of Open BIM environment such as BIM data creation and BIM data application. In addition, the authors also suggested on BIM data interoperability system and developed mapping interface.

summary This work studies the Performance-Based Design approach, focusing exclusively on cost performance, asking how to launch the architectural portion thinking of the cost of the building in a way that such performance can directly influence the project design and architectural form and how can shape, type and structure of the building influence the final cost of the work. For this, we chose to analyze the DProfiler software for the development of models in order to produce an architectural form that directly meets the performance cost requirements, following specified formal language, which aligns cost and project intention in the initial phase of the design. The research showed that the use of Macro BIM software platform is promising and that the generative design process can and should arise from an organization of the parts and not from predefining it as a whole, achieving an architectural project that is attainable and more sustainable.

summary This paper outlines a research project that explores the participation in, and perception of, advanced technologies in architectural professional practice through a sociotechnical lens and presents empirical research findings from an online survey distributed to employees in five large-scale architectural practices in Sydney, Australia. This argues that while the computational design paradigm might be well accepted, understood, and documented in academic research contexts, the extent and ways that computational design thinking and methods are put-into-practice has to date been less explored. In engineering and construction, technology adoption studies since the mid 1990s have measured information technology (IT) use (Howard et al. 1998; Samuelson and Björk 2013). In architecture, research has also focused on quantifying IT use (Cichocka 2017), as well as the examination of specific practices such as building information modelling (BIM) (Cardoso Llach 2017; Herr and Fischer 2017; Son et al. 2015). With the notable exceptions of Daniel Cardoso Llach (2015; 2017) and Yanni Loukissas (2012), few scholars have explored advanced technologies in architectural practice from a sociotechnical perspective. This paper argues that a sociotechnical lens can net valuable insights into advanced technology engagement to inform pedagogical approaches in architectural education as well as strategies for continuing professional development.

summary Large-scale airports such as Incheon International Airport have large-scale terminals, annex buildings, and numerous open spaces. An integrated space management system is required to manage these buildings and spaces efficiently. Thus, Incheon International Airport Corporation developed a 3D computer-aided design (CAD)-based integrated space management system. The major system development goal was to provide intuitive 3D-based visual information, thereby realizing an integrated space and asset management system that does not require expert knowledge of any specific field, such as architecture. This paper discusses the construction of the system and the problems that had to be resolved to achieve this goal.

summary This paper aims to investigate a new methodology for analysing energy performance of buildings with complex kinetic façades. In this research, the flexible movements of individual kinetic façades in a building is determined by the façades' opening ratios and the sun path. The platform development is conducted through a visual programing environment in BIM, and the process is presented with a case study. Finally, the building's energy performance is compared with a building having static façades using whole building energy analysis tool.

summary For architects, a database of typological specific occupant behaviour patterns could help in the design of buildings, through a typological specific insight into the previous use of buildings. In addition, appropriately represented occupant behaviour data in commercial buildings represent an important factor for facilities management (FM) and business information (BI) teams in the assessment the operational performance of the enterprise. Building Information Models (BIM) could provide an appropriate reference for this user data. However the mapping of user behaviour data to the BIM models is unclear. This paper presents a ‘designGhost’ information system to support the mapping of occupant behaviour to BIM models, so that the user data can be represented to the different stakeholders. To test the information system a prototype tool is presented to enable the mapping of the building use (designGhost) data to the building’s spaces in order to support architects in the design stage and to support navigation from an operational (FM/BI) perspective. This paper addressees the challenges of developing such a system and proposes directions for future work.

summary Facility management is aimed at energy saving, increasing the lifespan of buildings, enhancing the satisfaction of facility users and reducing running costs. To that end, it is important to grasp the conditions of the building in detail, and to analyze them one by one in order to execute building operation and maintenance strategically. However, conventional CAFM is insufficient. Therefore, we developed a system (called Building Information Management System) to utilize BIM data made on a Web site. We used groupware to support the system and an information platform that enables continuous management of a great variety of maintenance information. In addition, we developed a system to input information of building operation and maintenance using a mobile device on the site of checking and patrolling so as to reduce the burden of inputting information. A sensor network is used to acquire building operation and maintenance information to enhance building operation and maintenance. We also developed a system to automatically input sensing information into the building information for Building Information Management System, and to connect it with a 3D model. It has therefore become easier to collect the large amount of information necessary for strategic building operation and maintenance.

summary This paper discusses the potential of a BIM platform for offsite timber construction within the context of the UK construction industry. It examines the benefits, limitations, and challenges that BIM brings for offsite timber. Proof-of-concept projects are presented that deal with the architectural technology, structural engineering, and life cycle analysis aspects. These demonstrate the feasibility of the development of an open BIM platform which would establish a common standard for the industry. The paper concludes by suggesting an alternative business model for offsite timber construction, as enabled by Building Information Modelling.

summary For efficient interoperability of information between IFC (a standard open BIM model) and CityGML(a standard model in GIS), the information system is comparatively analysed through IFC, CityGML and LandXML. A direction for developing object-oriented AUIM (Archi-Urban Integration Model) for analysis and maintenance of spatial information is proposed. In this study, LOD for AUIM-based interior spatial information is presented. At the same time, strategies for BIM-GIS convergence are sought.

summary Despite the effort of Korean government to vitalize BIM adoption in AEC industry, the domestic adoption of BIM is still in its initial step. Particular in design field where medium and small firms being the majority, shows lower level of BIM adoption. The primary reason for this can be considered as lacking of necessities caused by uncertain benefits of BIM. Therefore, it is time to develop the objectives, quantifiable and qualitative measurement system of BIM performances. The purpose of this study is to suggest the BIM Performance Measurement System for architectural design firms. In achieving this, the authors have developed Balanced Scorecard (BSC) and validated its appropriateness by questionnaire survey with experts and performing statistical analysis. This development can be contributed to the voluntary BIM adoption by visualizing the detailed benefit of BIM and to the improvement of enterprise competitiveness by facilitating management of design process and estimating future outcome.

summary Architectural survey is an evolving field in architecture that has been affected during the past decades by the technological advancements in the field of 3D data acquisition. Data acquired from laser scanning and photogrammetry, for the purposes of documentation can be integrated in the BIM data base of the project and contribute as the first stage in the sustainable process of building reuse and retrofit and for an appropriate design intervention for a building under preservation. This paper presents the case study of the documentation and design intervention of a building under preservation in Ramat Gan, Israel. All phases of the design process were integrated into a comprehensive BIM data base: the digital documentation of the building, through laser scanning and photogrammetry, the architectural geometry, the structural information, the HVAC and electrical planning. This case-study demonstrates how the compilation of the various phases in a BIM database facilitated a smooth workflow in a complicated project under preservation, allowed for an immediate coordination between the various consultants and resulted in a non-invasive design intervention.

summary This paper explores four factors contributing to the revival of stone masonry; aesthetics, externalities, representational tools and cutting technologies. The ongoing desirability of stone for architects and designers for aesthetic reasons; sustainability benefits of stone due to its potentially reducing hidden externalities of production and transportation; the development of representational tools in terms of advances in computer aided design, simulation, analysis and manufacturing; and advances in production technologies. This paper focuses on how digital technologies are making stone a viable material for architects and designers.

summary This paper describes a novel method for determining the capacity to generate solar energy integrated into the roofs of buildings by aerial survey using UAVs and BIM models for sizing the covering surfaces and integration of solar panels. Various digital procedures are enchained like planning of trajectories, image processing, geometric reconstitution, simulation of solar radiation and calculation of energy generation to promote on-site installation of clean energy sources in existing buildings, to ensure a more sustainable habitat.
