summary The BIM today can be a provider of inputs to performance analysis of different phenomena such as thermal comfort, energy consumption or winds. All these assessments are fundamental to the post occupation of the building. The attainment of approximate information of how the future building would behave under these conditions will reduce the waste of materials and energy resources. The same idea is used for evaluating the users occupation. Through simulation of human behavior is possible to evaluate which design elements can be improved. In complex structures such as hospital buildings or airports is quite complex for architects to determine optimal design solutions based on the tools available nowadays. These due to the fact users are not contemplated in the model. Part of the data used for the simulation can be derived from the BIM model. The three-dimensional model provides parametric information, however are not semantically enriched. They provide parameters to elements but not the connection between them, not the relationship. It means that during a simulation Virtual Users can recognize the elements represented in BIM models, but not what they mean, due to the lack of semantics. At the same time the built environment may assume different functions depending on the physical configuration or activities that are performed on it. The status of the space may reveal differences and these changes occur constantly and are dynamic. In an initial state, a room can be noisy and a moment later, quiet. This can determine what type of activities the space can support according to each change in status. In this study we demonstrate how the spaces can express different semantic information according to the activity performed on it. The aim of this paper is to simulate the activities carried out in the building and how they can generate different semantics to spaces according to the use given to it. Then we analyze the conditions to the implementation of this knowledge in the BIM model.

summary In this paper we use analysis tools from Space Syntax and objective observation of the human behaviour, to understand the impact of landmarks in the walking patterns of users of spaces. Our case study was a large exterior public open space (University Campus), in which participants could walk freely and simultaneously be tracked by several sensors. We carried Space Syntax analysis for this space, and then collected Global Positioning System (GPS) tracking information and used a mobile eye-tracking device to acquire eye gaze information. The collected data allowed us to map and analyse each subject behaviour in the public space. A more specific analysis was done to four selected landmarks that, according to the Space Syntax analysis, were the ones with higher integration values. Results indicate that landmarks with such higher integration values show also a larger count of fixations and saccades of gaze interaction.

summary This paper presents the first application reports of BIM in the Architecture and Urbanism course at UNOCHAPECÓ University, Brazil. This course, which began inserting BIM in its curriculum in 2014, shows considerations on the implementation of BIM in a discipline of architectural design. In addition, this paper aims to understand the students’ viewpoint regarding the insertion of BIM through a questionnaire. As a result, it presents the reflections of this experience in teaching BIM. This study expects to generate contributions to new practices in the teaching of architecture and urbanism and to advance the knowledge about BIM.

summary This paper aims to investigate a new methodology for analysing energy performance of buildings with complex kinetic façades. In this research, the flexible movements of individual kinetic façades in a building is determined by the façades' opening ratios and the sun path. The platform development is conducted through a visual programing environment in BIM, and the process is presented with a case study. Finally, the building's energy performance is compared with a building having static façades using whole building energy analysis tool.

summary Architectural survey is an evolving field in architecture that has been affected during the past decades by the technological advancements in the field of 3D data acquisition. Data acquired from laser scanning and photogrammetry, for the purposes of documentation can be integrated in the BIM data base of the project and contribute as the first stage in the sustainable process of building reuse and retrofit and for an appropriate design intervention for a building under preservation. This paper presents the case study of the documentation and design intervention of a building under preservation in Ramat Gan, Israel. All phases of the design process were integrated into a comprehensive BIM data base: the digital documentation of the building, through laser scanning and photogrammetry, the architectural geometry, the structural information, the HVAC and electrical planning. This case-study demonstrates how the compilation of the various phases in a BIM database facilitated a smooth workflow in a complicated project under preservation, allowed for an immediate coordination between the various consultants and resulted in a non-invasive design intervention.

summary Numerous researchers point out that in the early stages of architectural design many significant decisions are taken to directly affect functional qualities, performance of the building, aesthetics, and relationships of the building with the natural environment and climate, even if there is no certain and valid information to create satisfactory design solutions. This paper particularly focuses on the early stages of architectural design and searches for the opportunities provided by Building Information Modeling (BIM) tools, in terms of the concept of performance analysis and form seeking. The study also includes case study implementations which visualize the early processes of architectural design with benefits of BIM under different conditions to evaluate its opportunities during these design processes. A few case studies have been implemented to reveal how new BIM tools can help designers in these stages. As a result of the implementations, it has been understood that BIM is a powerful early stages of architectural design tool; not for designing, but for supporting design.

summary The aim of this work is to try to set out how new technologies can influence the perception of a museum exposition. The problem which will be analysed is how to adapt an exhibition to the needs of visually impaired people. The problem will be considered on the basis of the case studies which were the part of an agreement between the Army museum in Bialystok and our Faculty. In traditional museums the main principle is the prohibition of touching exhibits.The project goal was to help blind people understand the features of the environment around them through the sense of touch. The novelty of this work is the study of how new digital technologies may improve the perception for the visually impaired.In the paper the method of 3D scanning, modelling and 3D printing will be presented. In conclusion the encountered problems and plans for further action will be discussed.

summary This paper presents a workflow called the ‘heuristic optimization workflow’ that integrates Octopus, a Multi-Objective Optimization (MOO) engine with Grasshopper3D, a parametric modeling tool, and multiple simulation software. It describes a process that enables the designer to integrate disparate domains via Octopus and complete a feedback loop with the developed interactive, real-time visualization tools. A retrospective design of the Bow Tower in Calgary is used as a test case to study the impact of the developed workflow and tools, as well as the impact of MOO on the performance of the solutions. The overall workflow makes MOO based results more accessible to designers and encourages a more interactive ‘heuristic’ exploration of various geometric and topological trajectories. The workflow also reduces design decision uncertainty and design cycle latency through the incorporation of a feedback loop between geometric models and their associated quantitative data. It is through the juxtaposition of extreme performing solutions that serendipity is created and the potential for better multiple performing solutions is increased.es responsive systems, which focus on the implementation of multi-objective adaptive design prototypes from sensored environments. The intention of the work is to investigate multi-objective criteria both as a material system and as a processing system by creating prototypes with structural integrity, where the thermal energy flow through the prototype, to be understood as a membrane, can be controlled and the visual transparency altered. The work shows performance based feedback systems and physical prototype models driven by information streaming, screening, and application.

summary The paper demonstrates a work-in-progress research on an agent-based aggregation model for architectural applications with a system of assembly based on environmental data acted as a driver for a growth mechanism. Even though the generative design and algorithms have been widely employed in the field of art and architecture, such applications tend to stay in morphological explorations. This paper examines an aggregation model based on Diffusion Limited Aggregation system incorporating solar environment analysis for global perspective of aggregation, the geometry research for lattice systems, and morphological principles of unit module in agent scale. The later part of this research paper demonstrates the potential of a design process through the “Constructed Cloud” case study, including site-specific applications and the implementation of the systematized rule set.

summary This paper presents a computational space adjacency analysis method by integrating information and analysis from process flow methods used in the healthcare system with space syntax methods used in architecture. These methods involve similar conceptual properties related to activity, space and flow. However, their implementation in the building programming process is disconnected, and relies solely on experience and expert opinions. The basic approach for the integration was by abstracting these similar properties in the process flow diagram, space connectivity diagram, and justified plan graph into nodes and edges representations. A case study of a clinic that is currently in the construction phase was used to develop the integration procedure and comparison analysis with the actual floorplan.

summary This paper advocates alternative methods to overcome the impossibility of realising ‘perfect’ digital designs. It discusses Hong Kong’s 2015 ‘ZCB Bamboo Pavilion’ as a methodological case study for the design and construction of architecture from unprocessed natu- ral bamboo. The paper critically evaluates protocols set up to deal with errors resulting from precise digital design systems merging with inconsistent natural resources and onsite craftsmanship. The paper starts with the geometric and tectonic description of the project, illus- trating a complex and restrictive construction context. Bamboo’s unique growth pattern, structural build-up and suitability as a bending- active material are discussed and Cantonese bamboo scaffolding craftsmanship is addressed as a starting point for the project. The pa- per covers protocols, construction drawings and assembly methods developed to allow for the incorporation and of large building toler- ances and dimensional variation of bamboo. The final as-built 3d scanned structure is compared with the original digital model. The pa- per concludes by discussing the necessity of computational architec- tural design to proactively operate within a field of real-world inde- terminacy, to focus on the development of protocols that deal with imperfections, and to redirect design from the virtual world towards the latent opportunities of the physical.

summary This article delineates the process of developing the project "Urbanimals" - an interactive installation designed and realised in Bristol, UK, in 2015. As the case study research, it draws attention to the difficulties in designing interactive structures in urban spaces - from an architects' idea to a construction stage. There are four areas that are being investigated: (1) Modelling interactions, (2) Negotiating locations and logistics, (3) Developing hardware and (4) Performing the on-site observations. The project draws from the idea of Smart City (SC) as the concept of the urban environment with a certain level of responsiveness through implementing a technology-driven matter that expands city offer perceivable, but gentle and not hindering way. It highlights the possible applications of projection technology and the utilisation of the 3D modelling software which provides complex tools for creating animations, movements and interactions with future users. The article gives clues how to design more engaging interactions and how to deal with implementing them in public realm.

summary The paper discusses the image of post-industrial city and perception of local values. It reveals the risks of unavoidable commercialisation of built heritage. It also shows that demolition of local industrial heritage may be transformed into cynical business strategy. A case study explains how a positive image of the investment has been created with the superficial reference to the memory of an authentic textile factory, and in a broader sense – to the post-industrial image of the city. In fact, it is an ample example of fabricated, fake post-industrial image – addressed to the na?ve taste of the general public and basing on the authenticity of sensations offered by other preserved factories. As such, it becomes a caricature of the new approach to the issue of cultural heritage. Moreover, it is particularly dangerous –since it badly affects the idea of contemporary heritage conservation.

summary Augmented reality has come a long way and experienced a paradigm shift in 1999 when the ARToolKit was released as open source. The nature of interaction between the physical world and the virtual-world has changed forever. Fortunately for the AECO industry, the transition from traditional Computer Aided Design to virtual building design phrased as Building Information Modeling has created a tremendous potential to adopt Augmented Reality. The presented research is situated in the early design stage of project inception and focuses on supporting informed collective decision-making, characterized by a dynamic back and forth analytical process generating large amounts of data. Facilitation aspects, such as data-collection, storage and access to enable comparability and evaluation are crucial for collective decision-making. The current research has addressed these aspects by means of data accessibility, visualization and presentation. At the core of the project is a custom developed Augmented Reality framework that enables data interaction within the design model. In order to serve as a collaborative decision support engine, the framework also allows multiple models and their datasets to be displayed and exercised simultaneously. The paper demonstrates in the case study the successful application of the AR tool during collaborative design decision meetings.

summary Over the past decade, ‘smart’ cities have capitalized on new technologies and insights to transform their systems, operations and services. The rationale behind the use of these technologies is that an evidence-based, analytical approach to decision-making will lead to more robust and sustainable outcomes. However, harvesting high-quality data from the dense network of sensors embedded in the urban infrastructure, and combining this data with social network data, poses many challenges. In this paper, we investigate the use of an intelligent middleware – Device Nimbus – to support data capture and analysis techniques to inform urban planning and design. We report results from a ‘Living Campus’ experiment at the University of Melbourne, Australia focused on a public learning space case study. Local perspectives, collected via crowdsourcing, are combined with distributed and heterogeneous environmental sensor data. Our analysis shows that Device Nimbus’ data integration and intelligent modules provide high-quality support for decision-making and planning.

summary This paper examines the parametric model in algorithmic design processes, using the outcome of an educational digital design and fabrication course as a case study. In its long history, algorithmic design as a form-finding method, allowed designers to manage complex non-standard associative geometries, suggesting a shift from the digital representation of form, to its systematic representation into a parametric model through code. Rather than a style or a tool, the parametric model is best defined in mathematical terms; in practice it incorporates the organizational logic of the form and the topological associations of its parts, so that a change in its constitutive parameters will invoke a concerted update of the entire model, and, iteratively, formal and structural variations. In a series of design experiments that took place at the School of Architecture of the Technical University of Crete in the spring of 2015, we used parametric models represented into visual code, from the initial conceptual stage to fabrication. From the experience and outcome of this course, we deduced that, compared to other digital formation methods, parametric models allow the designer to constantly interact with the model through the code, producing discreet variations without losing control of the design intentions, by “searching” into a wide range (albeit finite) of virtual results. This suggested a shift in culturally embedded patterns of modernist design thinking.

A high level of integration of mapped elements in the urban fabric of the city was proven, which leads to the conclusion that they form a wholesome identity of an industrial city, the infrastructure itself forming a specific type of spatial relation recognised as an industrial landscape. Systematic transformations of these elements are the key to a successful regeneration of derelict areas of the urban landscape in order for them to become a generator of a new urbanity.

summary Since 1985 the Computer-Aided Architectural Design Futures Foundation has fostered high level discussions about the search for excellence in the built environment through the use of new technologies with an exploratory and critical perspective. In 2015, the 16th CAAD Futures Conference was held, for the first time, in South America, in the lively megalopolis of Sao Paulo, Brazil. In order to establish a connection to local issues, the theme of the conference was "The next city". The city of Sao Paulo was torn down and almost completely rebuilt twice, from the mid 1800s to the mid 1900s, evolving from a city built in rammed-earth to a city built in bricks and then from a city built in bricks to a city built in concrete. In the 21st century, with the widespread use of digital technologies both in the design and production of buildings, cities are changing even faster, in terms of layout, materials, shapes, textures, production methods and, above all, in terms of the information that is now embedded in built systems.Among the 200 abstracts received in the first phase, 64 were selected for presentation in the conference and publication in the Electronic Proceedings, either as long or short papers, after 3 tough evaluation stages. Each paper was reviewed by at least three different experts from an international committee of more than 80 highly experienced researchers. The authors come from 23 different countries. Among all papers, 10 come from Latin-American institutions, which have been usually under-represented in CAAD Futures. The 33 highest rated long papers are also being published in a printed book by Springer. For this reason, only their abstracts were included in this Electronic Proceedings, at the end of each chapter.The papers in this book have been organized under the following topics: (1) modeling, analyzing and simulating the city, (2) sustainability and performance of the built environment, (3) automated and parametric design, (4) building information modeling (BIM), (5) fabrication and materiality, and (6) shape studies. The first topic includes papers describing different uses of computation applied to the study of the urban environment. The second one represents one of the most important current issues in the study and design of the built environment. The third topic, automated and parametric design, is an established field of research that is finally becoming more available to practitioners. Fabrication has been a hot topic in CAAD conferences, and is becoming ever more popular. This new way of making design and buildings will soon start affecting the way cities look like. Finally, shape studies are an established and respected field in design computing that is traditionally discussed in CAAD conferences.

summary Early design phase energy modelling is used to provide the design team with feedback about the impact of various building configurations. For better energy-conscious and sustainable building design and operation, the construction of BIM data interoperability for energy performance assessment in the early design phase is important. The purpose of this study is to suggest a development of BIM data interoperability for energy performance assessment based on BIM. To archive this, the authors have investigated advantages of BIM-based energy performance assessment through comparison with traditional energy performance assessment; and suggest requirements for development of Open BIM environment such as BIM data creation and BIM data application. In addition, the authors also suggested on BIM data interoperability system and developed mapping interface.
