summary The digital age is facilitating an ever increasing trend of globalized language and culture. Environmental issues are no longer a static concept as climate change and population growth force concepts of adaptability. What does this mean for the academy? How do we educate students to contemplate future urban scenarios and make some organization out of this more dynamic, complex future? The following paper seeks to disseminate a spring 2014 design studio at The University of Arizona where these issues were addressed, with Mexico City as a test bed. Computation has become a vital tool in the organizational process of these complex issues and big data. Various digital tools and platforms were explored in the studio to determine which ones would be most useful in modeling, mapping, designing and processing some of the complex relationships that are present in urban environments today.

summary A glitch is defined as a temporary, transient fault in a system that corrects itself. Glitches are cracks, frictions that create ‘openings’ in a particular system, revealing new meanings of the system itself. As opposed to its typical negative connotation, the glitch finds here a positive meaning and a generative quality. The concept is in fact employed as a research strategy to embed serendipity in the built environment through urban systems, places and experiences that use responsive technologies. When glitches relate to the built environment, people find new connections with places, shifting the relationship from the ordinary towards the unexpected and the unpredictable.

summary This paper examines the redefinition of public urban space through the evaluation and implementation of a series of globally interconnected interactive & robotic kiosks. Through the utilization and deciphering of relevant urban data, “Public Sphere” creates a new tangible layer within the urban fabric accessed through local and global reactive interfaces that engage the “contemporary” urban dweller with a network of urban ecologies that had previously remained hidden or overlooked. Through a series of studies examining the relationship between “Users, Robot & Global Network”, this paper outlines the processes and inquiries that inform the current location of this ongoing research.

summary Today, 98% of megaprojects face cost overruns or delays. The average cost increase is 80% and the average slippage is 20 months behind schedule (McKinsey 2015). It is becoming increasingly challenging to efficiently support the scale, complexity and ambition of these projects. Simultaneously, project data is being captured at growing rates. We continue to capture more data on a project than ever before. Total data captured back in 2009 in the construction industry reached over 51 petabytes, or 51 million gigabytes (Mckinsey 2016). It is becoming increasingly necessary to develop new ways to leverage our project data to better manage the complexity on our projects and allow the many stakeholders to make better more informed decisions. This paper focuses on utilizing advances in data mining, data analytics and data visualization as means to extract project information from massive datasets in a timely fashion to assist in making key informed decisions for project delivery. As part of this paper, we present an innovative new use of these technologies as applied to a large-scale infrastructural megaproject, to deliver a set of over 4,000 construction documents in a six-month period that has the potential to dramatically transform our industry and the way we deliver projects in the future. This paper describes a framework used to measure production performance as part of any project’s set of project controls for accelerated project delivery.

summary What kind of tools do landscape architects need to inform their designs with the abundance of knowledge available to us in Open Access data - in the era of 'Big Data'? Although the majority of landscape architects already integrate GIS data in their work, it is often only for analysis purposes and also only with data already integrated in their own country's GIS system. Without further processing, the graphic output formats often cannot reach a state that can be readily integrated into the design process. Students often have a negative stance towards GIS and the software programs associated with it especially within teaching. For the past three years, we at the Chair for Landscape Architecture of Professor Girot (ETH Zurich) have been researching at the potential for students to gain an understanding of the validity of site-specific data by creating coded programs that interactively integrate this information as parameters in the next step of the design process. The key to the entire processing chain is the use of an explorative approach to understanding data as the basis for making decisions.

summary This paper empirically tested the relationship between creativity and computing tools in two different architectural practice settings: one that extensively uses parametric tools for design and fabrication and another that predominantly uses conventional CAD tools in design. The paper surveyed 14 parametric practices and 17 non parametric practices from the UK. The results were statistically analysed using IBM_SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences). The analysis of variance between the 2 groups revealed significant differences on the four domains of creativity. Statistical variance between the two groups on originality was big. Also the length of time subjects used parametric tools correlated significantly with three measures of creativity (fluency, variety and elaboration). Cluster analysis on design cognition of the two groups showed significant pattern differences on how each group structures the design process.

summary 3D laser scanner is an instrument that employs LiDAR technology to map out objects in space by means of remote detection. In Architecture, digital mapping through 3D laser scanning mainly aims at creating digital surface models based on instant recordings of still objects, whereas lived spaces such as squares, streets, and urban surroundings presuppose the presence of people on the move. This paper presents some preliminary results of an investigation on the use of 3D laser scanning in urban contexts. It seeks to examine experimental data on moving people obtained in point clouds and discuss their operationalization possibilities and limitations. The main goal of this investigation is to assess the potential of this technology for use as a research tool and in city-scale design processes.

summary This study shows fundamental data for constructing a high-definition VR application under the theme of a three-dimensional visualization to restore past architecture and cities. It is difficult for widespread architectural and urban objects to be rendered in real-time. Thus, in this study, techniques for improving the level of detail (LOD) and representation of natural objects were studied. A digital reconstruction project of Azuchi Castle and old castle town was targeted as a case study. Finally, a VR application with specifications of seven million polygons, texture of 1.87 billion pixels, and 1920 × 1080 screen resolution, was successfully developed that could run on a PC. For the developed VR applications, both qualitative evaluation by experts and quantitative evaluation by end users was performed.

summary Public open spaces (parks, squares and other gathering places) can only be grasped from a simultaneous view of their attributes. In an ongoing Phd research project we propose to overcome the limitations of traditional-descriptive urban morphology methods in dealing with this simultaneity derived from their many shapes, functions, uses and relations within the urban structure. After developing the relations between formal attributes and intangible spatial properties, their identity and proximity may be disclosed by multivariate statistical analysis and data mining techniques. We outline a multidimensional method for the synchronic analysis and classification of the public open spaces departing from a research corpus of 126 Portuguese urban squares, whose analysis is intended to interactively (re)define it. The work done so far is presented, which comprises: (i) firming the concepts, criteria and attributes to extract; (ii) survey on theories, methods and spatial analysis tools and shortcomings identification; (iii) adaptation and/or creation of new methods and tools; (iv) creation of databases from CAD and GIS environments; (v) research on multivariate analysis, data mining and data visualization techniques.

summary Over the past decade, ‘smart’ cities have capitalized on new technologies and insights to transform their systems, operations and services. The rationale behind the use of these technologies is that an evidence-based, analytical approach to decision-making will lead to more robust and sustainable outcomes. However, harvesting high-quality data from the dense network of sensors embedded in the urban infrastructure, and combining this data with social network data, poses many challenges. In this paper, we investigate the use of an intelligent middleware – Device Nimbus – to support data capture and analysis techniques to inform urban planning and design. We report results from a ‘Living Campus’ experiment at the University of Melbourne, Australia focused on a public learning space case study. Local perspectives, collected via crowdsourcing, are combined with distributed and heterogeneous environmental sensor data. Our analysis shows that Device Nimbus’ data integration and intelligent modules provide high-quality support for decision-making and planning.

summary The more complex our cities become the more difficult it is for designers to use traditional tools for understanding and analyzing the inner essence of an eco-system such as the contemporary urban environment. Even many of the recently crafted digital tools fail to address the necessity for a more holistic design approach which captures the virtual and the physical, the immaterial and the material. Handling of massive chunks of information, classification and assessment of diverse data is nowadays more crucial than ever before. We see a significant potential in combining the fields of composition in music and architecture through the use of information technology. Merging the two fields has the intense potential to release new, innovative tools for urban designers. This paper describes an innovative tool developed at the Technical University of Crete, through which an urban designer can work on the music transcription of a specific urban environment applying music compositional rules and filters in order to identify discordant entities, highlight imbalanced parts and make design corrections. Our cities can be tuned.

summary This paper presents a novel web-based platform that supports the analysis, integration, and visualization of large-scale and heterogeneous urban data, with application to city planning and decision-making. Motivated by the non-scalable character of conventional urban analytics methods, as well as by the interoperability challenges present in contemporary data silos, the illustrated system – coined SocialGlass – leverages the combined potential of diverse urban data sources. These include sensor and social media streams (Twitter, Instagram, Foursquare), publicly available municipal records, and resources from knowledge repositories. Through data science, semantic integration, and crowdsourcing techniques the platform enables the mapping of demographic information, human movement patterns, place popularity, traffic conditions, as well as citizens’ and visitors’ opinions and preferences about specific venues in a city. The paper further demonstrates an implemented prototype of the platform and its deployment in real-world use cases for monitoring, analyzing, and assessing city-scale events.

summary This paper presents a methodology to collect and visualize social media data about art, in order to map art locations in cities using geo-localized data, and comparing planning decisions with the actual use of spaces. As various social networks have penetrated into the daily life of people, these become one important and effective data source to understand how people perform 'arts' around the city [Shah, 2015]. The case study for this methodology is Singapore, a vibrant city where art and culture are being promoted in the light of an emerging creative economy. The Singapore government promotes art and creates 'art clusters', such as art districts, galleries, fairs and museums in the city. Additionally, artists, creative entrepreneurs, consumers, and critics seek and explore alternative spaces. Understanding where art and creativity are discussed, broadcasted and consumed in Singapore is a key point to have better insights into art space planning, and study its effects on the city.The paper will try to answer the following research question:Is it possible to discover, through social network data, spaces where art is produced, discussed, and broadcasted to an audience in Singapore? summary This paper is focusing on the idea of error as the origin of difference in form but also as the path and the necessity for optimization. It describes the use of Cellular Automata (CA) for a series of structural and formal elements, whose proliferation is guided through sets of differential grids (multigrids) and leads to the buildup of big span structures and edifices as, for example, a cathedral. Starting from the error as the main idea/tool for optimization, taxonomies of morphological errors occur and at a next step, they are informed with contextual elements to produce an architectural system. A toolbox is composed that can be implemented in different scales and environmental parameters, providing variation, optimization, complexity and detail density. Different sets of experiments were created starting from linear structural elements and continuing to space dividers and larger surface components.

summary The new digital fabrication technologies are changing the production methods in contemporary society. The sharing of information, within a new logic of production, has the potential to change the current economic system. The present work look after the open source architecture for digital fabrication, through the constructive experience of House Magazine, developed by LAMO3d, Laboratory of 3d Models and Digital Fabrication on FAU-UFRJ. The project, sold in newsstands with the correspondent assembly instructions, aims to popularize the fabrication technologies by its absorption and transfiguration in popular culture. The open source projects and technologies promote the widening of uses of knowledge and technological advances, unlinking them from the big business and generating a dispersion of production. It is up to us to recognize its potential and shape its endless application possibilities.

summary This article describes and analyzes experiments conducted during the development of the master’s work entitled “Parameterized Modeling of Accessibility Design Details: Work Flow In order to have reusability, interoperability and materialization”. Such experiments intended to investigate and verify the potential of interoperability between different architecture software. It was verified the possibility of materialization and reuse of models, where the details worked with a new guise through the context of developing and creating a project in which it was inserted. The difficulties of accessing, sharing and editing data and information were evaluated. The results obtained allowed to identify features and limitations related to the models and their formats.

summary This article deals with the technique of photogrammetry by using the Autodesk 123D Catch® application for registration of facades of historical and cultural buildings in the city of Salvador. Four trials are carried out in different complexities to test the tool’s potential. The Igreja and Convento de Nossa Senhora do Carmo, the chosen architectural elements are the door and the cover of the Church, as in the Palacete das Artes, the rear facade and one of the sculptures of the gardens. The 123D Catch® is efficient for the purpose of architectural records, however, there are still limitations of technical and spatial order to be observed.

summary This article proposes a reflection on the possibilities of using games that explore architectural design world of building blocks applied to the universe of Architecture and Urbanism design, both from a literature search and through empirical data collected from a workshop coordinated by the Research Group of Languages and Expressions of Architecture, Urbanism and Design. The objective is to highlight the possibilities and limitations of using the projetual world of building blocks as an academic material for Architecture and Urbanism, especially after the experience of the interactive game Minecraft based on the Grammar Shape.
