summary This research builds upon a previous body of work focused on the relationship between surface geometry and heat transfer coefficients in thermal mass passive systems. It argues for the design of passive systems with higher fidelity to multivariable space between performance and perception. Rooted in the combination of form and matter, the intention is to instrumentalize design principles for the choreography of thermal gradients between buildings and their environment from experiential, spatial and topological perspectives (Figure 1). Our work is built upon the premise that complex geometries can be used to improve both the aesthetic and thermodynamic performance of passive building systems (Cupkova and Azel 2015) by actuating thermal performance through geometric parameters primarily due to convection. Currently, the engineering-oriented approach to the design of thermal mass relies on averaged thermal calculations (Holman 2002), which do not adequately describe the nuanced differences that can be produced by complex three-dimensional geometries of passive thermal mass systems. Using a combination of computational fluid dynamic simulations with physically measured data, we investigate the relationship of heat transfer coefficients related to parameters of surface geometry. Our measured results suggest that we can deliberately and significantly delay heat absorption re-radiation purely by changing the geometric surface pattern over the same thermal mass. The goal of this work is to offer designers a more robust rule set for understanding approximate thermal lag behaviors of complex geometric systems, with a focus on the design of geometric properties rather than complex thermal calculations.

summary Today, 98% of megaprojects face cost overruns or delays. The average cost increase is 80% and the average slippage is 20 months behind schedule (McKinsey 2015). It is becoming increasingly challenging to efficiently support the scale, complexity and ambition of these projects. Simultaneously, project data is being captured at growing rates. We continue to capture more data on a project than ever before. Total data captured back in 2009 in the construction industry reached over 51 petabytes, or 51 million gigabytes (Mckinsey 2016). It is becoming increasingly necessary to develop new ways to leverage our project data to better manage the complexity on our projects and allow the many stakeholders to make better more informed decisions. This paper focuses on utilizing advances in data mining, data analytics and data visualization as means to extract project information from massive datasets in a timely fashion to assist in making key informed decisions for project delivery. As part of this paper, we present an innovative new use of these technologies as applied to a large-scale infrastructural megaproject, to deliver a set of over 4,000 construction documents in a six-month period that has the potential to dramatically transform our industry and the way we deliver projects in the future. This paper describes a framework used to measure production performance as part of any project’s set of project controls for accelerated project delivery.

summary Nowadays as the aim to reduce the environmental impact of buildings becomes more apparent, a new architectural design approach is gaining momentum called sustainable architectural design. Sustainable architectural design process includes some regulations itself, which requires calculations, comparisons and consists of several possible conflicting objectives that need to be considered together. A successful green building design can be performed by the creation of alternative designs generated according to all the sustainability parameters and local regulations in conceptual design stage. As there are conflicting criteria's according to LEED and BREAM sustainable site parameters, local regulations and local climate conditions, an efficient decision support system can be developed by the help of Pareto based non-dominated genetic algorithm (NSGA-II) which is used for several possibly conflicting objectives that need to be considered together. In this paper, a model which aims to produce site layout alternatives according to sustainability criteria for cooperative apartment house complexes, will be mentioned.

summary This paper has argued that interdisciplinary approach is necessary to get better understanding of the problem within a built heritage area. It is found that inhabitants perceived the mixed heritage architecture as their own, an appreciation also expressed toward perception values of building: uniqueness, aesthetic and age. The research has also shown that inhabitants in the Darmo residential area - Surabaya, Indonesia perceived that their area are worth to be conserve due to the function such as the city amenities and attribute of the shady environment. Taken together, these results suggest that a better understanding of inhabitant’s awareness will contribute to the successful conservation program.

summary The following research investigates the development of an agent-based design method as an integrative design tool for polygonal surface structures. The aim of this research is to develop a computational tool that self-organizes the emergence of polygonal surface structures from interaction between its constitutive lattices. This research focuses on the ethological level of morphogenesis that is relevant to the animal or insect societies, whereby agents mediate the material organizations with environmental aspects. Meanwhile, behavior-based approaches are investigated as a bottom-up system to develop a computational framework in which the lower-level features constantly interact. The lower-level features such as material properties (e.g., geometric descriptions) are abstracted into building blocks or agents to construct the agent’s morphology. The abstracted principles, which define the agent’s morphology, are aggregated into a generative tool to explore the emergent complexities. This exploration coupled with the generative constraint mechanisms steers the collective agents system toward the cloud of solutions; hence, the collective behaviors of agents constitute the polygonal surface structures. This polygonal system is a bottom up approach of developing the complex surface that emerges through topological and topographical interaction between cells and their surrounding environment. Subsequently, the integrative system is developed through agent-based parametric modelling, in which the knowledge-based system as a top-down approach is substituted with the agent system together with its morphological features and significant behaviors.

summary Since 1985 the Computer-Aided Architectural Design Futures Foundation has fostered high level discussions about the search for excellence in the built environment through the use of new technologies with an exploratory and critical perspective. In 2015, the 16th CAAD Futures Conference was held, for the first time, in South America, in the lively megalopolis of Sao Paulo, Brazil. In order to establish a connection to local issues, the theme of the conference was "The next city". The city of Sao Paulo was torn down and almost completely rebuilt twice, from the mid 1800s to the mid 1900s, evolving from a city built in rammed-earth to a city built in bricks and then from a city built in bricks to a city built in concrete. In the 21st century, with the widespread use of digital technologies both in the design and production of buildings, cities are changing even faster, in terms of layout, materials, shapes, textures, production methods and, above all, in terms of the information that is now embedded in built systems.Among the 200 abstracts received in the first phase, 64 were selected for presentation in the conference and publication in the Electronic Proceedings, either as long or short papers, after 3 tough evaluation stages. Each paper was reviewed by at least three different experts from an international committee of more than 80 highly experienced researchers. The authors come from 23 different countries. Among all papers, 10 come from Latin-American institutions, which have been usually under-represented in CAAD Futures. The 33 highest rated long papers are also being published in a printed book by Springer. For this reason, only their abstracts were included in this Electronic Proceedings, at the end of each chapter.The papers in this book have been organized under the following topics: (1) modeling, analyzing and simulating the city, (2) sustainability and performance of the built environment, (3) automated and parametric design, (4) building information modeling (BIM), (5) fabrication and materiality, and (6) shape studies. The first topic includes papers describing different uses of computation applied to the study of the urban environment. The second one represents one of the most important current issues in the study and design of the built environment. The third topic, automated and parametric design, is an established field of research that is finally becoming more available to practitioners. Fabrication has been a hot topic in CAAD conferences, and is becoming ever more popular. This new way of making design and buildings will soon start affecting the way cities look like. Finally, shape studies are an established and respected field in design computing that is traditionally discussed in CAAD conferences.

summary This paper outlines a research project that explores the participation in, and perception of, advanced technologies in architectural professional practice through a sociotechnical lens and presents empirical research findings from an online survey distributed to employees in five large-scale architectural practices in Sydney, Australia. This argues that while the computational design paradigm might be well accepted, understood, and documented in academic research contexts, the extent and ways that computational design thinking and methods are put-into-practice has to date been less explored. In engineering and construction, technology adoption studies since the mid 1990s have measured information technology (IT) use (Howard et al. 1998; Samuelson and Björk 2013). In architecture, research has also focused on quantifying IT use (Cichocka 2017), as well as the examination of specific practices such as building information modelling (BIM) (Cardoso Llach 2017; Herr and Fischer 2017; Son et al. 2015). With the notable exceptions of Daniel Cardoso Llach (2015; 2017) and Yanni Loukissas (2012), few scholars have explored advanced technologies in architectural practice from a sociotechnical perspective. This paper argues that a sociotechnical lens can net valuable insights into advanced technology engagement to inform pedagogical approaches in architectural education as well as strategies for continuing professional development.

summary In 2015, an earthquake of 7.8 magnitude displaced over 6.6 million people in Kathmandu, Nepal. Three years later, the country continues in its struggle to rebuild its capital. The aim of this study is to investigate a construction system, produced from locally sourced materials, that can aggregate and deploy as self-built, habitable infrastructure. The study focused on the relationship between material resonance, earthquake resistant structures, and fabrication strategies. An agent-based form-finding algorithm was developed using knowledge acquired through physical prototyping of mycelium-based composites to generate earthquake resistant geometries, optimize material usage, and enhance spatial performance. The results show compelling evidence for a construction methodology to design and construct a 3-4 story building that holds a higher degree of resistance to earthquakes. The scope of work contributes to advancements in bioengineering, confirming easy-to-grow, light-weight mycelium-composites as viable structural materials for construction.

The analysis of the example of adapting historical objects - Hugger’s Brewery to a new function, may lead to conclusion whether that adapted object can still be named a historic building. Is it an industrial heritage or is it nothing more than a creation – an artificial space? How far can we go in the ‘re-using’? Where is the boundary?

summary Responsive architecture is often seen as one that merely adapts to change. This reflects its limited and still incipient application in architecture. Given the current resource’s crisis, a systemic building management is essential. This article argues that there is no established process for creating and managing responsive architecture. Therefore, it claims is necessary to deepen knowledge about systems, computation, mathematics, biology and robotics. Despite being a vast subject, it proposes a ‘state of the art’ about systems, investigating how to operate them. Based on this, proposes a method for generating responsive systems. This method is tested in a practical case.

summary This paper outlines a material based research that proposes a time-based architecture that extends Frei Otto’s research of sand formations using sand’s natural angle of repose. The tectonic system focuses on developing compressive structures of sand for hot climate desert areas through a zero-waste formative process whose architecture reorganizes materials naturally available on the site. Formations are hardened as a surface through the phase changing properties of a saline solution which crystallizes when cooled, bonding with the sand. The proportion of insulation material defines the building life span redistributes the materials back into its environment at the end of its cycle. The materiality and spatial qualities of the project are based on the conical and constant angle surfaces generated through the gravitational process of sand formation. Between the digital opportunities of sand formation and its physical possibilities, this paper outlines the analogue-digital methods of sand computation through a comprehensive study in four main sections; material system, material computation, design system and robotic fabrication.

summary Building Information Modeling (BIM) is an effective tool students can use to learn how building components work together to secure necessary structural stability in the course of construction. In Summer 2014, students enrolled in the BIM class at Texas A&M University created a 4-dimensional construction simulation model of the Museu de Arte de São Paulo (MASP) to understand how the entire building is sustained by two huge concrete beams connected with four external columns. For this class project, students analyzed the building system while creating a 3-dimensional model of the museum. They also came up with a construction sequence that would best maintain structural integrity of the building in the course of construction, and then produced a short animation video explaining the MASP construction process. This paper presents how the MASP project helped students learn a unique building system and its construction sequence.

summary This paper presents the example of the reconversion of an important tram station from the origins of electricity in Portugal that was still in use until the late 1990’s but became redundant since then. Its significant urban presence and the importance of preserving the memory of the old trams that were still in use some years ago in Lisbon, led to an innovative solution, combining public value and heritage protection. In 2011, the Lisbon City Council agreed to give the building and its site for university use, namely to be transformed into a student’s facility, as a study, leisure, recreational and cultural space of the IST, open 24h a day. This new university building, located just one block away from the traditional IST compound, was called IST Learning Center and extended the notion of campus outside its walls and into the city’s urban fabric.

summary Gravity prescribes a very specific maxim for the built environment represented by the horizontal layer cake we are all so familiar with. This is contrasted by designs such as the International Space Station where no floor is present and every surface provides some function whether storage, data display and instrumentation or biological support infrastructure. Because of the homogeneity of approach to each surface an astronaut requires literal markers to orient oneself within the vessel. Very seldom within the natural, earth-bound environment does one find oneself in a situation where “up” is a questionable vector. What happens when architecture is translated to the virtual. What is the role of the architect or of his or her architecture in a virtual universe. Would a virtual architecture itself not become a social engine, its social context being that of online gaming, crowdfunding and social media? This engine's main role being the creation of architecturally inspiring gathering spaces for learning, playing and community building.

summary This paper discusses the potential of a BIM platform for offsite timber construction within the context of the UK construction industry. It examines the benefits, limitations, and challenges that BIM brings for offsite timber. Proof-of-concept projects are presented that deal with the architectural technology, structural engineering, and life cycle analysis aspects. These demonstrate the feasibility of the development of an open BIM platform which would establish a common standard for the industry. The paper concludes by suggesting an alternative business model for offsite timber construction, as enabled by Building Information Modelling.

summary This article presents a case study on a vertical building envelope design considering Recife ?s climatic conditions. It consists of the utilization of parametric and algorithmic processes to distribute sun shading devices. The study uses computational tools such as Grasshopper and the DIVA for Grasshopper. The latter is a thermal energy simulation tool that uses the Energy Plus 7.0 and Daysim for calculations. The model uses incident solar radiation simulation on the envelope as basis for distribution of shading devices. The result is a parametric model that automatically responds to urban and climatic characteristics, through simulations integrated to the 3D model.

summary Despite the effort of Korean government to vitalize BIM adoption in AEC industry, the domestic adoption of BIM is still in its initial step. Particular in design field where medium and small firms being the majority, shows lower level of BIM adoption. The primary reason for this can be considered as lacking of necessities caused by uncertain benefits of BIM. Therefore, it is time to develop the objectives, quantifiable and qualitative measurement system of BIM performances. The purpose of this study is to suggest the BIM Performance Measurement System for architectural design firms. In achieving this, the authors have developed Balanced Scorecard (BSC) and validated its appropriateness by questionnaire survey with experts and performing statistical analysis. This development can be contributed to the voluntary BIM adoption by visualizing the detailed benefit of BIM and to the improvement of enterprise competitiveness by facilitating management of design process and estimating future outcome.
