summary In a quest for promoting sustainable modes of mobility, we have revisited how feasible and suitable is it for people to walk or cycle to their destinations in a neighbourhood. We propose a few accessibility measures based on an 'Easiest Path' algorithm that provides also actual temporal distance between locations. This algorithm finds paths that are as short, flat and straightforward as possible. Considering several 'points of interest', the methods can answer such questions as “do I have a 5 minutes 'easy' walking/cycling access to all/any of these points?” or, “which is the preferred point of interest with 'easy' walking cycling access?” We redefine catchment zones using Fuzzy logics and allow for mapping 'closeness' considering preferences such as 'how far' people are willing to go on foot/bike for reaching a particular destination. The accessibility measures are implemented in the toolkit CONFIGURBANIST to provide real-time analysis of urban networks for design and planning.

summary Over the past decade, ‘smart’ cities have capitalized on new technologies and insights to transform their systems, operations and services. The rationale behind the use of these technologies is that an evidence-based, analytical approach to decision-making will lead to more robust and sustainable outcomes. However, harvesting high-quality data from the dense network of sensors embedded in the urban infrastructure, and combining this data with social network data, poses many challenges. In this paper, we investigate the use of an intelligent middleware – Device Nimbus – to support data capture and analysis techniques to inform urban planning and design. We report results from a ‘Living Campus’ experiment at the University of Melbourne, Australia focused on a public learning space case study. Local perspectives, collected via crowdsourcing, are combined with distributed and heterogeneous environmental sensor data. Our analysis shows that Device Nimbus’ data integration and intelligent modules provide high-quality support for decision-making and planning.

summary In this paper we use analysis tools from Space Syntax and objective observation of the human behaviour, to understand the impact of landmarks in the walking patterns of users of spaces. Our case study was a large exterior public open space (University Campus), in which participants could walk freely and simultaneously be tracked by several sensors. We carried Space Syntax analysis for this space, and then collected Global Positioning System (GPS) tracking information and used a mobile eye-tracking device to acquire eye gaze information. The collected data allowed us to map and analyse each subject behaviour in the public space. A more specific analysis was done to four selected landmarks that, according to the Space Syntax analysis, were the ones with higher integration values. Results indicate that landmarks with such higher integration values show also a larger count of fixations and saccades of gaze interaction.

summary This work aims to expose the methodological process of the construction of a digital urban simulator called “SIMRio”, that is being developed at the Laboratory of Digital Representation and Urban Analysis. Constructed with the technology of videogames, through the use of its engines applied to digital 3d models of central area of Rio de Janeiro, the research has the objective to develop interactive systems where one could virtually visit, in real time, not only the spaces of the city, but also different times of its history, walking between them as if were in a digital time machine.

summary This paper describes a design approach for discerning solar gain and assigning appropriate external shading devices. The approach includes a macro analysis locating where and when the building receives direct sunlight and locating desired interior daylighting; along with a micro analysis of how folded sun-shading motifs filter or block direct sunlight. The approach uses a collaborative analytical workflow with feedback from virtual and physical simulations informing design explorations. This iterative, reciprocating process is illustrated by student efforts to design shading structures for a building based on incident solar radiation. Designers begin with cutting and folding paper study models, then lasercut 2D tessellation patterns to create sculptural shading screens to be examined with a heliodon. Physical daylighting modeling reveals aesthetic opportunities to develop with parametric design. Motifs are then digitally modeled and analysed for shading effectiveness. Analysing the solar radiation of simple motifs helps beginners learn the software for subsequent urban situations. The efficacy of these simulations is discussed along with ways that the results could be interpreted to initiate design decisions for a building skin.

summary The current paper develops and extends the methodology of the geometrical description of urban outdoor places, formerly defined as the index keys method. The previously defined features of street and square profiles and skylines, i.e.: central angle, regularity and corrugation, are further completed with variations which develop into a clear, mathematical explanation of the basic notions defining genius loci, including the scale and atmosphere of a place. Altogether, the geometrical analysis defined here stems from the descriptions of urban settings with regard to culture related issues. It also reveals some of the morphological processes in the transformation of urban settings which took place in the discussed locations. The algorithmic method, namely the use of Grasshopper scripting, has been applied for the automation of the process. The preliminary results of analyses are presented as well as further research pathways.

summary Environmental analysis as part of the initial design process, affords precise consideration of the bioclimatic human conditions within the environmental local context. The daily growth in inter alia knowledge of effective parameters in environmental conditions, quality weather data, human thermo-physiology studies – all contribute to improving the potential for achieving a relatively accurate analyses of environmental conditions by overlaying and computing all the climatic and thermo-physiological data. This paper describes a digital method for examining different points in the same context by computing all the input data available to understand the corresponding human comfort condition levels, thus leading to better decision-making at early design stages. Information about the site, climate, human thermo-physiology and behavioral aspects among others are collected where each data parameter is matched and analyzed to the context of every node on the model through a series of specific computational algorithms. Thereafter, the data from the nodes are statistically cleaned, classified and integrated based on the CBE thermal comfort calculation for ASHRAE-55. The results obtained using this method, can be tailored according to the desired outcomes. The proposed method identifies effective factors for human comfort condition improvement for different points on the context. It also provides a means to priorities specific parameters so that they can be manipulated for optimal digital design solutions, ie. Aligned to the desired conditions in the specific parts of the site with the aim of optimize outdoor space usage.

summary The paper presents results of a research conducted in 2015 and 2016 at Lodz University of Technology. It proposes a purpose and context fit approach towards the automation of urban data generation based on GIS tools and New Urbanism typologies. First, background studies of methods applied in urban morphology analysis are revealed. Form-Based Code planning, and subsequently Transect-Based Code are taken into account. Then, selected examples from literature are described and discussed. Finally, the research study is presented and the outcomes compared with more traditional methodology.

summary What are frontier zones in contemporary urban cities? This research project was developed in cooperation with an interdisciplinary group of researchers and students from Brazil and Germany and launched with an International Summer School in São Paulo in 2015. Its aim was to explore and invent urban spaces using the method of documentary film making as a medium to provide new insights and readings of the contemporary city. In Germany we analyzed these film productions by examining the main topics of the frontier zones in São Paulo. The method of documentary film making was once again chosen for the hermeneutic interpretation.

summary This paper describes a design approach for a new urban building typology for Shanghai utilizing a set of parametric design techniques to arrive at an alternative solution to current models of urbanization. The goal in this approach was to find a solution that is adaptable and sensitive to the urban environment and has the capacity to preserve historic urban street patterns. The approach included an understanding of the historic urban fabric of Shanghai, a respective plot analysis and the development of a computational method to produce a new urban type. The parametric set-up was build upon an analytical workflow with integrated feedback procedures that informed the design exploration and resulted in multiple design solutions.

summary This article focuses on the use of computational tools to provide dynamic assessment and optimized arrangements while planning and discussing interventions in urban areas. The objective is to address the use of algorithmic systems for evaluating and generating urban morphologies guided by Transit Oriented Development (TOD) principles. TOD is an urban development model that considers geometric and measurable parameters for designing sustainable cities. It advocates the creation of compact mixed-use neighborhoods within walking distance to a variety of transportation options and amenities, seeking to result on optimized infrastructure provision and energy efficient low-carbon districts. This paper presents algorithmic experiments for proposing a rapid-transit district, by the optimization of its urban morphology and services’ location, providing an accurate and efficient TOD principles-oriented modelling.

summary Public open spaces (parks, squares and other gathering places) can only be grasped from a simultaneous view of their attributes. In an ongoing Phd research project we propose to overcome the limitations of traditional-descriptive urban morphology methods in dealing with this simultaneity derived from their many shapes, functions, uses and relations within the urban structure. After developing the relations between formal attributes and intangible spatial properties, their identity and proximity may be disclosed by multivariate statistical analysis and data mining techniques. We outline a multidimensional method for the synchronic analysis and classification of the public open spaces departing from a research corpus of 126 Portuguese urban squares, whose analysis is intended to interactively (re)define it. The work done so far is presented, which comprises: (i) firming the concepts, criteria and attributes to extract; (ii) survey on theories, methods and spatial analysis tools and shortcomings identification; (iii) adaptation and/or creation of new methods and tools; (iv) creation of databases from CAD and GIS environments; (v) research on multivariate analysis, data mining and data visualization techniques.

summary In this paper we proposed a visual perception analysis to be used as a methodology for the evaluation, communication and design of places. The work was applied for the urgent challenge of re-thinking industrial areas which characterize the visual landscape of numerous urban fringes. We used simulation of the present and future of heritage as a design, evaluation and communication device. The experimental focuses on visual analysis techniques for mapping current conditions of the image of productive landscapes. In particular, 2-D digital maps, 3-D digital urban modelling, spherical panoramic pictures, cylindrical videos, Google Maps and Street View, and a post-processing work on photography and models were tested on an industrial area located in the urban fringe of Milan characterized by the diffused presence of productive landscapes.

summary The aim of this investigation was to evaluate the performance of three wind analysis programs used in the early design stage (EDS) of a passive windbreak shelter concept for an urban context. This study compared the different workflows of these programs and the respective visualized results, identifying the differences and limitations of these tools, for design exploration. The programs tested were Autodesk Vasari, ODS-Studio, and ANSYS CFX. The results of this investigation indicate that basic computational fluid dynamics (CFD) programs such as Vasari was found to be more suitable for the observation of large-scale wind phenomena through the whole area of the shelter. Moreover, intermediate CFD tools (functions, usability) such as ODS-Studio can be used more efficiently in detailed visualization of wind interacting with design features. Finally, a more sophisticated CFD program like ANSYS CFX can be incorporated in the early design stage workflow for final verification of results.

summary This applied research brings together the performance analysis of a building's micro-scale and urban-infrastructure's macro-scale. A New York City lot, is serving as the background of experimentation with parametric design, performance simulation, data analysis and visualization. The paper describes the process of integrating design intentions, location parameters, climate data, material properties, and space quality and sustainability metrics into one platform. Although in-depth domain knowledge is irreplaceable, the paper argues that the exploration into contemporary, easily accessible and algorithmic simulation software, provides a unique educational opportunity for architects and students to integrate performance driven design in their every-day practice, and become aware of the consequences of their design on urban infrastructure systems. This allows them to reduce the time frame between design iterations and performance evaluation for the benefit of better informed decisions.

summary Current research treats walkability in cities as an urban asset, to be identified by formal methods in order to let people benefit from it. In this paper, we take an activity-based view on the subject, arguing that walkability is not an end in itself but must always be seen from the standpoint of a specific activity to be performed. More precisely, we look at the specific walkability when seeking to perform an activity 'a' (e.g. shopping) within a given time budget 'b' (e.g. 15 minutes). Based on these two factors, we have devised a grid-based analysis method that computes transitions between grid cells. As result, we get a walkability map that extends the traditional 'proximity-based' understanding of neighborhoods by the notion of goal-directed pedestrians. To argue for the applicability of our approach, we showcase i it in two cities with different urban structure (Yerevan and Wiener Neustadt) before concluding.

summary This paper presents a novel web-based platform that supports the analysis, integration, and visualization of large-scale and heterogeneous urban data, with application to city planning and decision-making. Motivated by the non-scalable character of conventional urban analytics methods, as well as by the interoperability challenges present in contemporary data silos, the illustrated system – coined SocialGlass – leverages the combined potential of diverse urban data sources. These include sensor and social media streams (Twitter, Instagram, Foursquare), publicly available municipal records, and resources from knowledge repositories. Through data science, semantic integration, and crowdsourcing techniques the platform enables the mapping of demographic information, human movement patterns, place popularity, traffic conditions, as well as citizens’ and visitors’ opinions and preferences about specific venues in a city. The paper further demonstrates an implemented prototype of the platform and its deployment in real-world use cases for monitoring, analyzing, and assessing city-scale events.

summary For efficient interoperability of information between IFC (a standard open BIM model) and CityGML(a standard model in GIS), the information system is comparatively analysed through IFC, CityGML and LandXML. A direction for developing object-oriented AUIM (Archi-Urban Integration Model) for analysis and maintenance of spatial information is proposed. In this study, LOD for AUIM-based interior spatial information is presented. At the same time, strategies for BIM-GIS convergence are sought.

summary The number of variables acting upon urban landscapes is numerous and interconnected, closely resembling complex systems in constant dynamic transformation. Current analytical methods and descriptions of the city are domain specific, limited in scope, and discretize the city into quantifiable individual representations, resulting in an equally limited urban policy and design. If we are to produce urban systems capable of contributing to the robustness and resiliency of cities, we ought to understand and represent the comprehensive network of actors that construct contemporary urban landscapes. On one hand, the natural sciences approach the analysis of complex systems by primarily focusing on the development of models capable of describing their stochastic formation, remaining agnostic to the contextual properties of their individual components and oftentimes discretizing the otherwise continuous relationships among parts. signers work in groups. They need to share information either synchronously or asynchronously as they work with parametric modeling software, as with all computer-aided design tools. Receiving information from collaborators while working may intrude on their work and thought processes. Little research exists on how the reception of design updates influences designers in their work. Nor do we know much about designer preferences for collaboration. In this paper, we examine how sharing and receiving design updates affects designers’ performances and preferences. We present a system prototype to share changes on demand or in continuous mode while performing design tasks. A pilot study measuring the preferences of nine pairs of designers for different combinations of control modes and design tasks shows statistically significant differences between the task types and control modes. The types of tasks affect the preferences of users to the types of control modes. In an apparent contradiction, user preference of control modes contradicts task performance time.

summary A new high-rise building, when inserted in an existing urban environment, cannot have all the floor plans identical since the visual and environmental constraints change from floor to floor due to the interference of neighboring buildings, sun light, prevailing wind and noise. So how can we design a building that takes into consideration all this variables? How can digital design tools help? (DELPINO, 2014). We believe that a building like that can be designed constructing facade maps which allow a floor by floor analysis considering visual, wind, noise and sun light constraints. We believe that facade maps analysis and their superposition provide clues of how each floor plan can be built to provide comfort and to take most advantage of the view. (DELPINO, 2014). We believe that variation techniques such as tessellation and morphing can provide the formal bases for such design. We believe that digital design tools are vital both for analysis as well as for designing this type of building. (IWAMOTO, 2009, p. 35-59; MOUSSAVI, 2009, p. 42-216).
