summary Since 1985 the Computer-Aided Architectural Design Futures Foundation has fostered high level discussions about the search for excellence in the built environment through the use of new technologies with an exploratory and critical perspective. In 2015, the 16th CAAD Futures Conference was held, for the first time, in South America, in the lively megalopolis of Sao Paulo, Brazil. In order to establish a connection to local issues, the theme of the conference was "The next city". The city of Sao Paulo was torn down and almost completely rebuilt twice, from the mid 1800s to the mid 1900s, evolving from a city built in rammed-earth to a city built in bricks and then from a city built in bricks to a city built in concrete. In the 21st century, with the widespread use of digital technologies both in the design and production of buildings, cities are changing even faster, in terms of layout, materials, shapes, textures, production methods and, above all, in terms of the information that is now embedded in built systems.Among the 200 abstracts received in the first phase, 64 were selected for presentation in the conference and publication in the Electronic Proceedings, either as long or short papers, after 3 tough evaluation stages. Each paper was reviewed by at least three different experts from an international committee of more than 80 highly experienced researchers. The authors come from 23 different countries. Among all papers, 10 come from Latin-American institutions, which have been usually under-represented in CAAD Futures. The 33 highest rated long papers are also being published in a printed book by Springer. For this reason, only their abstracts were included in this Electronic Proceedings, at the end of each chapter.The papers in this book have been organized under the following topics: (1) modeling, analyzing and simulating the city, (2) sustainability and performance of the built environment, (3) automated and parametric design, (4) building information modeling (BIM), (5) fabrication and materiality, and (6) shape studies. The first topic includes papers describing different uses of computation applied to the study of the urban environment. The second one represents one of the most important current issues in the study and design of the built environment. The third topic, automated and parametric design, is an established field of research that is finally becoming more available to practitioners. Fabrication has been a hot topic in CAAD conferences, and is becoming ever more popular. This new way of making design and buildings will soon start affecting the way cities look like. Finally, shape studies are an established and respected field in design computing that is traditionally discussed in CAAD conferences.

summary EMOVERE, interdisciplinary project that aims at creating innovative interactive performance, brings together dance, sound and image. Bio-data related to emotions, heart and respiratory rate, are mediated by dancers and gives them control over music and video- mapping on stage. A creative process occurs through successive approaches, where technical possibilities are systematically explored until controlled, then body expression is lead by Alba Emoting, building an artistic discourse. Video-mapping is used for lighting purposes, creating a visual atmosphere for dancers. Fusion of media on stage creates synesthetic scenery where physical and digital aspects combine and interact in a codependent relationship.

summary Calligraphy is one of the important cultures in Chinese world. The rich strokes, structures and forms make the Chinese calligraphy an art. As the writing script is closely correlated to the emotions of the writer, a lot of scholars explore the correlation between the Chinese calligraphy lines and affect from the perspectives of psychology and art. In this study, it introduces the affective-computing technology and combines the digital media from the perspective of Chinese calligraphy and emotions, to develop an interactive calligraphy-art device. It re-interprets the Chinese calligraphy art with the digital tool and installs the pulse sensor and pressure sensor in the Chinese pen brush, so as to detect the user’s pulse and writing power. Moreover, it converts the physiological signals into affect and provides visual feedback in real time, which includes the changes and motions of the Chinese calligraphy lines. The study proposes contacting the traditional Chinese calligraphy with a new human-computer interaction mode. With the visual feedback effect during the interaction, it allows the user to know the close correlation between the Chinese calligraphy and the emotions. Through the work, the Chinese calligraphy art can be carried forward.

title From representational to parametric and algorithmic interactions: A panorama of Digital Architectural Design teaching in Latin America

summary This study focuses on the context of graphic representation technologies and digital design on Architectural teaching in Latin America. From categories proposed by Oxman and Kotnik and through a mapping study framed by a systematic review in CumInCAD database, it is presented a panorama of the state-of-art of the digital design on Architectural teaching in the region, between 2006 and 2015. The results suggest a context of coexistence of representational interaction and parametric interaction, as well as a transition from one to another and the emergence of the first experiments in algorithmic interaction. As this mapping shows an ongoing movement toward Digital Architectural Design in Latin America in the last decade, and points out its dynamics in space in time, it could contribute to strengthen a crowdthinking network on this issue in the region and with other continents.

The co-design among community and trans-disciplinary participants with different expertise required scope of media mix, switching between analogue, digital and back again. This involves different degrees of physical and digital 'GIGA-Mapping' (Sevaldson, 2011, 2015), 'Grasshopper3d' (Davidson, 2017) scripting and mix of digital and analogue fabrication to address the real life world. The critical participation of this 'Time-Based Design' (Sevaldson, 2004, 2005) process is the interaction of the prototype with eco-systemic agency of the adjacent environment - the eco-systemic performance. The TreeHugger is a responsive solid wood insect hotel, generating habitats and edible landscaping (Creasy, 2004) on bio-tope in city centre of Prague. To extend the impact, the code was uploaded for communities to download, local-specifically edit and apply worldwide. Thus, the fusion of discussed processes is multi-scaled and multi-layered, utilised in emerging design field: Systemic Approach to Architectural Performance.

summary 3D laser scanner is an instrument that employs LiDAR technology to map out objects in space by means of remote detection. In Architecture, digital mapping through 3D laser scanning mainly aims at creating digital surface models based on instant recordings of still objects, whereas lived spaces such as squares, streets, and urban surroundings presuppose the presence of people on the move. This paper presents some preliminary results of an investigation on the use of 3D laser scanning in urban contexts. It seeks to examine experimental data on moving people obtained in point clouds and discuss their operationalization possibilities and limitations. The main goal of this investigation is to assess the potential of this technology for use as a research tool and in city-scale design processes.

summary Based on our current daily rate, 85,410 hours is the average amount of time that an adult in the United States will spend on their phone in a lifetime (Howarth 2023). This is time spent texting, tweeting, emailing, snapping, chatting, posting, and interacting with an interface which each of us carry in our pocket. Kelly Dobson explains, “We psychologically view the cell phone as an extension of our bodies, which is why when you accidentally forget it or leave it behind you feel you have lost apart of yourself” (2013). In reality, this device is just one of many technologies which affect our relationship with our bodies and the physical world. Additionally, Zoom meetings, social media networks, on-line shopping, and delivery robots, all increasingly detach our bodies and our senses from our everyday experiences and interactions. In response to digital culture, Liam Young writes, “Perhaps the day will come when we turn off our target ads, navigational prompts, Tinder match notifications, and status updates to find a world stripped bare, where nothing is left but scaffolds and screens” (2015). Make no mistake; the collection of projects shared in these field notes is intended to be a counterpoint to such a prophesied future. However, the intent is not to try to compete with technology, but rather, to consider the built environment itself as an interface, encouraging interaction through feedback and responsivity directly related to human factors, finding ways to re-engage the body through design.

summary Time Magazine, had named the “Person of the Year” to “YOU” (the crowd) in 2006 , due to the infinite potentials of the thousands and millions of ‘yous’ who control the media and financing within the new digital democracy. These same citizens of digital innovation create the new platforms—seen in the early beta developments of Kickstarter, Twitter, Wikipedia, and Facebook—and contribute to the manipulation of international exchange of information and power, creating value propositions beyond the traditional product complexity of the market. Peer exchange and crowd organizational strategy will be used to innovate the built environment, and it is pertinent for “digital” property and “real” property to recognize and benefit from this emergence. Professional codes of conduct, economic values, and legal regulations have become a means to an end of the designing of digital and physical property, as digital barriers lift much of the necessary pre-cautions that is required to govern collaboration. This body of research explores the qualifying factors of open innovation identity between the creators and the consumers, the state of design ethics and ownership uncertainties pertaining to the combinatory methods and mechanisms that employ these technologies.

summary We introduce a parametric modeling method in the field of computer-aided architectural conception, which aims to produce non-standard wooden walls and envelopes with CNC machinery. This method explores the application of polygonal cellular structures (as patterns) on facade and envelope interventions for new and old projects. We innovate by bringing the 3D production environment complexity into the conception model to improve the production of manifold woodworking items by CNC (Computer Numerical Control) 3D fabrication. A recent experimentation, tests the entire workflow from parametric modeling to production of two full-scale prototypes. The results prove the range of inputs offered by the method to be functional, though it needs various improvements in order to optimize parametric modeling and digital fabrication procedures. Future research will focus on treating a wider range of joints via parametric modeling and deal with joint creation regardless wall deformation to expand the morphological approach of non-standard wooden walls design.

summary Computing has been increasingly employed in design environments, primarily to perform calculations and logical decisions faster than humans could, enabling tasks that would be impossible or too time-consuming to execute manually. Various studies highlight the use of digital tools and technologies in diverse methods, such as parametric modeling and evolutionary algorithms, for exploring and optimizing alternatives in architecture, design, and engineering (Martino, 2015; Fagundes, 2019). Currently, there is a growing emergence of intelligent models that increasingly integrate computers into the design process. Demonstrating great potential for initial ideation, artificial intelligence (AI) models like Shap-E (Nichol et al., 2023) by OpenAI stand out. Although this model falls short of state-of-the-art sample quality, it is among the most efficient orders of magnitude for generating three-dimensional models through AI interfaces, offering practical balance for certain use cases. Thus, aiming to explore this gap, the presented study proposes an innovative design agency framework by employing Shap-E connected with parametric modeling in the design process. The generation tool has shown promising results; through generations of synthetic views conditioned by text captions, its final output is a mesh. However, due to the lack of topological information in models generated by Shap-E, we propose to fill this gap by transferring data to a parametric three-dimensional surface modeling environment. Consequently, this interaction's use aims to enable the transformation of the mesh into quantifiable surfaces, subject to collection and optimization of dimensional data of objects. Moreover, this work seeks to enable the creation of artificial databases through formal categorization of parameterized outputs using the K-means algorithm. For this purpose, the study methodologically orients itself in a four-step exploratory experimental process: (1) creation of models generated by Shap-E in a pressing manner; (2) use of parametric modeling to internalize models into the Grasshopper environment; (3) generation of optimized alternatives using the evolutionary algorithm (Biomorpher); (4) and classification of models using the K-means algorithm. Thus, the presented study proposes, through an environment of internalization and classification of models generated by the Shap-E tool, to contribute to the construction of a new design agency methodology in the decision-making process of design. So far, this research has resulted in the generation and classification of a diverse set of three-dimensional shapes. These shapes are grouped for potential applications in machine learning, in addition to providing insights for the refinement and detailed exploration of forms.

summary With an ever-increasing index of digital artifacts, we have begun to exhaust variation as an adaptive technique. The problem with incremental modulation (here understood as sequential and slowly progressing change of a set of parameters within a field condition) is that in essence it leads to morphologically equivalent and, hence, repetitive patterns of habitation. While the role of variation proved key in pushing forward an essential body of research testing and optimizing principles of mass customization, its residual effects become critically disconcerting. This paper presents an investigation of tectonic mutations for the generation of form, seen through data simulation experiments and machining artifacts. Through several projects we investigate the effects of ornament created as a result of the new relationship between generative modeling, simulation, and fabrication in the digital age. Subject to (de)generative mutation techniques, ornament can be under-stood as a result of overlaid data, whether the data is performance related or not, in both massing and surface conditions. This new working methodology will mitigate between the incertitude regarding time, history and memory, and by reinventing their relation it will reassess ornament’s agency within the digital culture. Design methods are extended by exploring, collecting, analyzing, and representing data through various materialization processes. Design is therefore reconsidered as being injected with the concepts of data driven design and dependent on the inter-play between performance and aesthetics. In this way, we consider the footprint - or the subsequent impact - of the human onto the nonhuman using artificial intelligence as a medium. These intentionally or accidentally engraved layers of information begin to describe potential trajectories of novel survival modes in the Anthropocene.

summary The general field this presentation will address is the integration of game mechanics within the design studio. The CAAD community has invested considerable energy into the insertion of games within education to teach specific skills or develop design behaviours. Building on some of this research we report on three years of studio teaching in undergraduate architectural studies. We propose that the outcomes of the design studio can benefit greatly from employing game mechanics to encourage constructive design behaviours within a student cohort. This body research flips the traditional location of game mechanic, shifting the motivations from the hands of the teacher to place the mechanic in the hand of the student. The research reports an increased level of engagement and collaboration and presents a body of work that extends beyond traditional expectations of the architectural design studio.

summary As part of ongoing research, the Digital Arts Center at UNC Charlotte has commissioned of a new music composition by Andy Akiho, a fellow at the American Academy in Rome. The presentation of this piece will begin with a premiere in Charlotte, followed by performances in Rome, New York ,Cleveland and Charleston. This collaboration focuses on responsive architecture (an interweaving of space and digital media as a critical element in contemporary architecrue) and expanded musical performance venues (an engaging, inclusive and unique atmosphere for both performers and audience). To accomplish these goals, we have created a “prepared music field” that will allow the audience to move through the space using their smart phones to engage both with live performers and digitally delivered augmented compositional elements. Audience members will have a unique listening experience depending upon their position and movement during the performance. In this work, we reconnect music with its temporal dimension by using digital methods to create a real time experience.

summary Digital fabrication technologies are changing rapidly the way we design, as any other tool would affect the way we produce space. Multi layered 3D printing is already allowing architects, designers and engineers to experiment with new design processes and new ways of production. At the same time, little research has being done in the way gradient transparency (through multiple layered surfaces) can affect the design process through computation; a field that deserves further investigation. The focus of this paper is to explore bio-inspired material finding design processes while combining biology, architecture and material science. We explore performance driven design possibilities through a study of marine animals -and specifically cephalopods- where opacity between skin layers is controlled through color pigments - while black pigments are called melanophores - which is often used as a type of camouflage. We propose a computation model that follows the logic of gradient transparency through pigments to fit complex “host surfaces”. We define a “host” surface as a basic geometry on which the pigments are computed. This study provides the methodology for the design of biomimetic surfaces with gradient transparency, using controlled and computated sub geometries analogous to the melanophores pigments. We finally propose Pigment Skin, a computational design model as an example to materialize this study.

summary This text is intended to provide ideas for the ongoing discussion and to provide a description of chosen positive and negative, aspects of the implementation of digital technologies in research and popularization of cultural heritage – historic architecture. The paper concerns modern ways of perception and presentation in cultural heritage (with reference to the needs of presentation-popularization), which are twofold – traditional in situ presentations of architecture are still functioning, as are new-media methods, such as augmented reality (acronym AR) or body immersion. The starting point in discussing the topic indicated in the title is the conviction of the usefulness of new technologies, conditioned by a constant control, analysis and tracking of results achieved with their help, especially such results that have been unexpected and unforeseen.

summary Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools are currently making a dynamic appearance in the architectural realm. Social media are being bombarded by word-to-image/image-to-image generated illustrations of fictive buildings generated by tools such as ‘Midjourney’, ‘DALL-E’, ‘Stable Diffusion’ and others. Architects appear to be fascinated by the rapidly generated and inspiring ‘designs’ while others criticise them as superficial and formalistic. In continuation to previous research on Generative Design, (Agkathidis, 2015), this paper aims to investigate whether there is an appropriate way to integrate these new technologies as a generative tool in the educational architectural design process. To answer this question, we developed a design workflow consisting of four phases and tested it for two semesters in an architectural design studio in parallel to other studio units using conventional design methods but working on the same site. The studio outputs were evaluated by guest critics, moderators and external examiners. Furthermore, the design framework was evaluated by the students through an anonymous survey. Our findings highlight the advantages and challenges of the utilisation of AI image synthesis tools in the educational design process of an architectural design approach.

summary This paper describes the development of the StretchPLAY prototype as a part of the Social Sensory Surfaces research project, focusing on the design of tactile and responsive environments for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The project is directed specifically at issues with sensory processing, the inability of the nervous system to filter sensory input in order to indicate an appropriate response. This can be referred to as a “traffic jam” of sensory data where the intensity of such unfiltered information leads to an over-intensified sensory experience, and ultimately a dis-regulated state. To create a sensory regulating environments, a tactile structure is developed integrating physical, visual and auditory feedback. The structure is defined as a textile hybrid system integrating a seamless knitted textile to form a continuous topologically complex surface. Advancements in the fabrication of the boundary structure, of glass-fiber reinforced rods, enable the form to be more robustly structured than previous examples of textile hybrid or tent-like structures. The tensioned textile is activated as a tangible interface where sensing of touch and pressure on the surface triggers ranges of visual and auditory response. A specific child, a five-year old girl with ASD, is studied in order to tailor the technologies as a response to her sensory challenges. This project is a collaboration with students, researchers and faculty in the fields of architecture, computer science, information (human-computer interaction), music and civil engineering, along with practitioners in the field of ASD-based therapies.

summary Cultural heritage assets are valuable, providing important information about humanity's past and conveying it to the future. Unfortunately, conventional documentation is insufficient to preserve them for the next generations. Furthermore, increasing visitor interaction with these assets and raising awareness has been one of the challenges in this field. In this paper, we will examine how mobile LiDAR (Laser Detection and Ranging) technology can be used to precisely scan and document historical sites and how it can be combined with gamification elements to provide visitors with better experiences. It is also important that the texture taken in mobile laser scanning can be used to better visualize 3D mesh models of the scanned objects, so the fastest application that produces 3D models is selected. The study area is Syedra Ancient City in Alanya / Turkey, where the research and excavation process has continued since 2015 and the restoration projects started in 2023. Future work includes the creation of experiences to provide a basis for gamification and revitalizing the story of the heritage for the visitors through digital storytelling and AR (Augmented Reality). Preserving historical sites while providing visitors with a more in-depth, vivid and enjoyable experience are important facts for enhancing cultural heritage and passing it on to future generations.

summary This paper studies the architectural potential of the implementation of material feedback using computer vision before and during an automated fabrication process. The combination of an industrial robot and a 3D camera is used expand the typical one-way design and fabrication process (from a digital design to a physical output), to a feedback loop, where specific material information becomes the main trigger of design decisions and fabrication processes. Several projects developed by the authors and tested during a robotic workshop aim to unveil different aspects of material feedback in architectural design, opening a discussion for the benefit and challenges of this new approach to design and fabrication.
