summary One of the most important natural resources for the urban sustainability is water. For this reason, the incorporation of appropriate strategies to manage water resources from buildings and urban planning is necessary. In this work a series of parametric criteria are defined, with which by using design software it proposed generating optimal forms in certain scenarios for high hydric performance in urban residential complexes. The examples developed demonstrates strong influences of dwelling density by the construction block and permeable outdoor surfaces, as well as local infrastructure for water recovering.

summary Computing has been increasingly employed in design environments, primarily to perform calculations and logical decisions faster than humans could, enabling tasks that would be impossible or too time-consuming to execute manually. Various studies highlight the use of digital tools and technologies in diverse methods, such as parametric modeling and evolutionary algorithms, for exploring and optimizing alternatives in architecture, design, and engineering (Martino, 2015; Fagundes, 2019). Currently, there is a growing emergence of intelligent models that increasingly integrate computers into the design process. Demonstrating great potential for initial ideation, artificial intelligence (AI) models like Shap-E (Nichol et al., 2023) by OpenAI stand out. Although this model falls short of state-of-the-art sample quality, it is among the most efficient orders of magnitude for generating three-dimensional models through AI interfaces, offering practical balance for certain use cases. Thus, aiming to explore this gap, the presented study proposes an innovative design agency framework by employing Shap-E connected with parametric modeling in the design process. The generation tool has shown promising results; through generations of synthetic views conditioned by text captions, its final output is a mesh. However, due to the lack of topological information in models generated by Shap-E, we propose to fill this gap by transferring data to a parametric three-dimensional surface modeling environment. Consequently, this interaction's use aims to enable the transformation of the mesh into quantifiable surfaces, subject to collection and optimization of dimensional data of objects. Moreover, this work seeks to enable the creation of artificial databases through formal categorization of parameterized outputs using the K-means algorithm. For this purpose, the study methodologically orients itself in a four-step exploratory experimental process: (1) creation of models generated by Shap-E in a pressing manner; (2) use of parametric modeling to internalize models into the Grasshopper environment; (3) generation of optimized alternatives using the evolutionary algorithm (Biomorpher); (4) and classification of models using the K-means algorithm. Thus, the presented study proposes, through an environment of internalization and classification of models generated by the Shap-E tool, to contribute to the construction of a new design agency methodology in the decision-making process of design. So far, this research has resulted in the generation and classification of a diverse set of three-dimensional shapes. These shapes are grouped for potential applications in machine learning, in addition to providing insights for the refinement and detailed exploration of forms.

summary The new digital fabrication technologies are changing the production methods in contemporary society. The sharing of information, within a new logic of production, has the potential to change the current economic system. The present work look after the open source architecture for digital fabrication, through the constructive experience of House Magazine, developed by LAMO3d, Laboratory of 3d Models and Digital Fabrication on FAU-UFRJ. The project, sold in newsstands with the correspondent assembly instructions, aims to popularize the fabrication technologies by its absorption and transfiguration in popular culture. The open source projects and technologies promote the widening of uses of knowledge and technological advances, unlinking them from the big business and generating a dispersion of production. It is up to us to recognize its potential and shape its endless application possibilities.

title Woka: Towards a dialogical design of future cities

summary This paper presents an experiment on an open source construction system named Woka, which allows anyone to design and produce dwellings using standard CNC techniques. Woka was developed as a dialogical design process that empowers self-builders to act in a more autonomous way, expanding the traditional role of design practice and the way buildings are created. The advent and popularization of new design and fabrication processes have encouraged a flux of new theories and project strategies based on computing, each with its promise of changing the architectural practice. Some of these resulted in intellectually seductive; visually provocative and complex shaped architectures, generating a new formal repertoire, but doesn’t indicate a paradigm shift in the process of production of architectural space, still based on authorship. Woka challenges this traditional process proposing dialogue as a design approach, shifting the focus from the object to intersubjectivity, amplifying the potential for novelty to arise.

summary This article aims to describe the ephemeral qualities that typography acquires in the digital context, caused by the polyvalence of the algorithmic code, which, from generative programming, allows the user to interact with the typographic object. These reflection are realized through the study of four projects: “Lettree” (2004), “Pyrographie” (2005), “Falling in Love” (2016) and “He liked Thick Word Soup” (2014). The observations were made by drawing a comparison between the concept of “matter” in the computational scenario proposed by the design philosopher Vilém Flusser (2015) and the quality of “fluidity” observed in the images created by digital generative programs.

title Interactive immersive experience: Digital technologies for reconstruction and experiencing temple of Bel using crowdsourced images and 3D photogrammetric processes

summary This paper investigates the potential of dense multi-image 3D photogrammetric reconstruction of destroyed cultural heritage monuments by employing public domain imagery for heritage site visitors. This work focuses on the digital reconstruction of the Temple of Bel, one of the heritage monuments in Palmyra, Syria, which was demolished in the summer of 2015 due to armed conflict. This temple is believed to be one of the most significant religious structures of the first century AD in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region with its unique design and condition before destruction actions. The process is carried out using solely one source of images; the freely available visitors’ images collected from the social media platforms and web search engines. This paper presents a digital 3D reconstruction workflow for the collected images using an advanced photogrammetry pipeline and dense image matching software. The virtually reconstructed outputs will be managed and implemented efficiently in Unity3D to create an entire 3D virtual interactive environment for the deconstructed temple to be visualised and experienced using the new Oculus Quest VR headset. The virtual Palmyra’s visitor will be offered an enhanced walk-through off-site interactive, immersive experience compared to the real-world one, which is non-existing and unobtainable at the site in the current time.

summary This article delineates the process of developing the project "Urbanimals" - an interactive installation designed and realised in Bristol, UK, in 2015. As the case study research, it draws attention to the difficulties in designing interactive structures in urban spaces - from an architects' idea to a construction stage. There are four areas that are being investigated: (1) Modelling interactions, (2) Negotiating locations and logistics, (3) Developing hardware and (4) Performing the on-site observations. The project draws from the idea of Smart City (SC) as the concept of the urban environment with a certain level of responsiveness through implementing a technology-driven matter that expands city offer perceivable, but gentle and not hindering way. It highlights the possible applications of projection technology and the utilisation of the 3D modelling software which provides complex tools for creating animations, movements and interactions with future users. The article gives clues how to design more engaging interactions and how to deal with implementing them in public realm.

summary The evolution of techniques and digital tools has aided and complemented actions in the design process, generating alternatives and reducing costs in short times. This paper reports experience that integrated the rapid prototyping in vertical atelier, in one of Pronto 3D network institution member. The results shows that use of rapid prototyping technology contributes to design improvement process applied to teaching of architecture and urbanism, mainly in relation of identification in failures and conflicts of proposals, which eventually pass unnoticed by students in different phases of the course.

summary Landscape architectural design problems are under-served by the current canon of computational design techniques. More investigations into modeling landscape phenomena would improve the capabilities of designers working in this field. This paper introduces some of the problems specific to the intersection of computational design and landscape architecture through a case study in generating planting plans using parametric techniques. This illustrates issues of temporality, complexity, and dynamism that distinguish land form from built form alongside the opportunities and challenges found in adapting computation to the design of natural systems.

keywords The paper discusses co-design, development, production, application of TreeHugger (see Figure 1). The co-design among community and trans-disciplinary participants with different expertise required scope of media mix, switching between analogue, digital and back again. This involves different degrees of physical and digital 'GIGA-Mapping' (Sevaldson, 2011, 2015), 'Grasshopper3d' (Davidson, 2017) scripting and mix of digital and analogue fabrication to address the real life world. The critical participation of this 'Time-Based Design' (Sevaldson, 2004, 2005) process is the interaction of the prototype with eco-systemic agency of the adjacent environment - the eco-systemic performance. The TreeHugger is a responsive solid wood insect hotel, generating habitats and edible landscaping (Creasy, 2004) on bio-tope in city centre of Prague. To extend the impact, the code was uploaded for communities to download, local-specifically edit and apply worldwide. Thus, the fusion of discussed processes is multi-scaled and multi-layered, utilised in emerging design field: Systemic Approach to Architectural Performance.

summary This paper researches the usefulness of computerized space layout programs in an actual problem of space layout of more than 50 design units of unequal sizes. This was tested with two existing space layout optimization methods, Quadratic Assignment Problem (QAP) and Attraction Force Model (AFM) as well as a satisficing method, intuitive approach. Necessary inputs for the evaluation processes, the evaluation processes and the resulting space layouts were analyzed for each approach by one designer. Their performance in the design process was criticized on subjects like preparation of inputs, situations related with multiple trials, evaluation of the resulting space layouts based on given inputs and what those space layouts represented. Generating alternatives is an advantage of computerized space layout approaches so that conditioning on the resulting space layouts decreases in the process but more research has to be done for their practicality in terms of input preparation, evaluation and transfer of outputs. Possible improvements were suggested to increase their usefulness in the professional field.

summary The noted 19th century biologist, Ernst Haeckel, put forward the idea that the growth (ontogenesis) of an organism recapitulated the history of its evolutionary development. While this idea is defunct within biology, the idea has been promoted in areas such as education (the idea of an education being the repetition of the civilizations before). In the research presented in this paper, recapitulation is used as a metaphor within computer-aided design as a way of grouping together different generations of spatial layouts. In most CAD programs, a spatial layout is represented as a series of objects (lines, or boundary representations) that stand in as walls. The relationships between spaces are not usually explicitly stated. A representation using Lindenmayer Systems (originally designed for the purpose of modelling plant morphology) is put forward as a way of representing the morphology of a spatial layout. The aim of this research is not just to describe an individual layout, but to find representations that link together lineages of development. This representation can be used in generative design as a way of creating more meaningful layouts which have particular characteristics. The use of genetic operators (mutation and crossover) is also considered, making this representation suitable for use with genetic algorithms.

summary The animation and visual effects industry is producing advanced software capable of generating realistic behaviours faster than ever by using algorithms that approximate the physics of the real world. There is an opportunity to utilize these software to support performance-based conceptual design for complex simulations such as Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). This paper investigates a method of performing windflow simulation using an animation software that implements an Eulerian based smoke solver. These simulations run orders of magnitude faster than the similar simulations in dedicated high-end CFD applications. The paper compares the animated simulation results to a benchmark case with measured wind-tunnel data. The results indicate that at certain points in the animation, the accuracy is very high. However, the challenge lies in predicting best frame at which to stop the animation. The paper ends with a discussion of how this challenge might be tackled.

summary Venation structures in leaves fulfil both circulatory as well as structural functions within the organism they belong to. A possible digital simulation algorithm for the growth of venation patterns based on the leaf surface has been described by the Department of Computer Science at the University of Calgary.Cell-based growth algorithms to generate surface meshes have been developed by biological and medical scientists as well as artists, in order to gain an understanding of developmental biology or to generate artistic form. This paper suggests the combination of the two algorithms in order to generate the morphologies of leaves and other structures while at the same time generating the corresponding venation system.The resulting algorithm develops large non-manifold mesh structures based on local rules of division of the individual cells. The venation system develops in parallel based on the flow of the plant hormone auxin from those cells towards the start point or petiole of the leaf. Different local behaviours of the cells towards their adjacent neighbours, towards their rules of division and towards the rules of developing veins have been investigated. The eventual aim of the algorithms is their application as tools to develop architectural and structural morphologies.

summary Augmented reality has come a long way and experienced a paradigm shift in 1999 when the ARToolKit was released as open source. The nature of interaction between the physical world and the virtual-world has changed forever. Fortunately for the AECO industry, the transition from traditional Computer Aided Design to virtual building design phrased as Building Information Modeling has created a tremendous potential to adopt Augmented Reality. The presented research is situated in the early design stage of project inception and focuses on supporting informed collective decision-making, characterized by a dynamic back and forth analytical process generating large amounts of data. Facilitation aspects, such as data-collection, storage and access to enable comparability and evaluation are crucial for collective decision-making. The current research has addressed these aspects by means of data accessibility, visualization and presentation. At the core of the project is a custom developed Augmented Reality framework that enables data interaction within the design model. In order to serve as a collaborative decision support engine, the framework also allows multiple models and their datasets to be displayed and exercised simultaneously. The paper demonstrates in the case study the successful application of the AR tool during collaborative design decision meetings.

summary The use of evolutionary solvers in design has introduced the potential of dealing with multiple conflicting objectives under a single design model. The experiments presented in this paper employ an evolutionary solver towards the generation of a 4x4 urban superblock in the city of Barcelona, one of the highest population density cities in Europe. The superblock is based on Cerda's iconic 8-sided block and takes three conflicting objectives into account, aiming not only to achieve a high density proposal but one that considers block relations, as well as green space throughout the city. The design is based on principles of evolutionary science, generating a population of solutions, whose individuals are ranked and selected based on a fitness criteria. Rather than aiming to reach a single 'optimal' solution, the model produces a population of solutions that are optimized in relation to the design environment.

summary In this paper, we propose a method of generating schematic diagrams from 3D models of mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) systems in order to represent this information in a more traditional, user-friendly format. It can be difficult to grasp the relationships between various MEP elements in building information models (BIM) because they are represented in a visually complex, three-dimensional manner. On the other hand, the relationships between building elements can be easily understood when using traditional schematic diagrams. First, sets of connected elements are extracted from a 3D model of MEP elements using their connection properties. Next, various elements of these systems are identified as nodes and their connections are represented as edges. Finally, these systems are displayed as a schematic diagram using element attribute information.

summary This article focus on the evolution of the HfG-Ulm, its teachers and central ideas, and emphasizes on ideological continuity of this School in the United States by selecting the path of Horst Rittel and the ideas he developed at UC Berkeley. It presents a reflection about the ideas that developed from the HfG-Ulm, through foreign students and teachers exchanges, being important to understand how their ideas have been developed, generating different outputs, in a significant period that went until the 70’s and which marked the introduction of different computational concepts in architecture, enabling the interaction of computers in architectural practice.
