summary In the field of architectural design, Diffusion-limited aggregation (DLA) has been widely adopted in the study of macroscopic urban terrains and structures. If we consider individual habitats as having the same gene as our city, the intrinsic nature of DLA provides interesting insights in emulating local interactions that take place at microscopic level. This paper takes the dynamics of the DLA to the smallest unit of designable space. Whilst Phase I focuses mainly on Euclidean constraints, Phase II looks at how such generative space can add complexity to an open office plan by allowing different physical attributes to interact with one another based on the company’s organizational chart.

summary Biological life manifests in space through a large diversity of physical structures perfectly bind and identifiable in the environment. This reveals that all share a common generative design process which allows them the same physical identity in all the shapes that generates, The human ecological design process used in architecture is not able yet to reach this design identity neither the spontaneous integration associates to it. Why? Because the geometrical design process used in ecological architecture and living structures are not similar. Thus, this paper proposes, through the identification of some geometrical characteristics from the growth mechanism of living structures, a process of shape generation through shape grammar. With this generation process is possible to generate, only in geometrical terms, a large diversity of architectural models with a common identity, that reveals some geometrical characteristics of spatial integration that living structures share with the surround environment.

summary The prevalent mode of shape grammar output is a two-dimensional drawing grammar. For architectural applications, these two- dimensional shape rules can hold a variety of interpretations in three-dimensional space. This work translates an existing grammar from a manual two-dimensional drawing grammar to an automated three-dimensional building grammar to explore the challenges and opportunities that this translation suggests in the larger context of shape computation. The case study considered here is a grammar interpreting John Portman’s architectural language as defined by the house Portman identifies as emblematic of his design principles, his 1964 personal residence Entelechy I.

summary This paper presents a 3D Concrete Printing (3DCP) experiment at the full scale of virtualarchitectural bodies developed through a computational technique based on the use of Cellular Automata (CA). The theoretical concept behind this technique is the decoding of errors in form generation and the invention of a process that would recreate the errors as a response to optimization (Adilenidou 2015). The generative design process established a family of structural and formal elements whose proliferation is guided through sets of differential grids (multi-grids) leading to the build-up of large span structures and edifices, for example, a cathedral. This tooling system is capable of producing, with specific inputs, a large number of outcomes in different scales. However, the resulting virtual surfaces could be considered as "unprintable" either due to their need of extra support or due to the presence of many cavities in the surface topology. The above characteristics could be categorized as errors, malfunctions, or undesired details in the geometry of a form that would need to be eliminated to prepare it for printing. This research project attempts to transform these "fabrication imprecisions" through new 3DCP techniques into factors of robustness of the resulting structure. The process includes the elimination of the detail / "errors" of the surface and their later reinsertion as structural folds that would strengthen the assembly. Through this process, the tangible outputs achieved fulfill design and functional requirements without compromising their structural integrity due to the manufacturing constraints.

summary The cognitive-theoretical foundation referring to teach drawing as a way of thinking, as well as the construction of the environment by means of drawing using transforming geometries and the formal and para-formal computational process, creating unusual geometries through generative design processes and methodologies, can be seen as some of the main possibilities in exploring dynamic experimental structures for an Adaptive Architecture. This article presents the development of a model for articulated facades, inspired by Hoberman´s Tessellates, and his Adaptive Building Initiative (ABI) project to develop facades models that respond in real time to environmental changes. In addition, we describe an experiment based on the retractable structures, inspired by Hoberman´s work and experimentations. Solutions for responsive facades can offer more flexible architectural solutions providing better use of natural light and contributing to saving energy. Using Rhinoceros and the Grasshopper for modeling and test the responsiveness, the parametric model was created to simulate geometric panels of hexagonal grids that would open and close in reaction to translational motion effects, regulating the amount of light that reaches the building.

summary This paper presents a workflow called the ‘heuristic optimization workflow’ that integrates Octopus, a Multi-Objective Optimization (MOO) engine with Grasshopper3D, a parametric modeling tool, and multiple simulation software. It describes a process that enables the designer to integrate disparate domains via Octopus and complete a feedback loop with the developed interactive, real-time visualization tools. A retrospective design of the Bow Tower in Calgary is used as a test case to study the impact of the developed workflow and tools, as well as the impact of MOO on the performance of the solutions. The overall workflow makes MOO based results more accessible to designers and encourages a more interactive ‘heuristic’ exploration of various geometric and topological trajectories. The workflow also reduces design decision uncertainty and design cycle latency through the incorporation of a feedback loop between geometric models and their associated quantitative data. It is through the juxtaposition of extreme performing solutions that serendipity is created and the potential for better multiple performing solutions is increased.es responsive systems, which focus on the implementation of multi-objective adaptive design prototypes from sensored environments. The intention of the work is to investigate multi-objective criteria both as a material system and as a processing system by creating prototypes with structural integrity, where the thermal energy flow through the prototype, to be understood as a membrane, can be controlled and the visual transparency altered. The work shows performance based feedback systems and physical prototype models driven by information streaming, screening, and application.

summary The following research investigates the development of an agent-based design method as an integrative design tool for polygonal surface structures. The aim of this research is to develop a computational tool that self-organizes the emergence of polygonal surface structures from interaction between its constitutive lattices. This research focuses on the ethological level of morphogenesis that is relevant to the animal or insect societies, whereby agents mediate the material organizations with environmental aspects. Meanwhile, behavior-based approaches are investigated as a bottom-up system to develop a computational framework in which the lower-level features constantly interact. The lower-level features such as material properties (e.g., geometric descriptions) are abstracted into building blocks or agents to construct the agent’s morphology. The abstracted principles, which define the agent’s morphology, are aggregated into a generative tool to explore the emergent complexities. This exploration coupled with the generative constraint mechanisms steers the collective agents system toward the cloud of solutions; hence, the collective behaviors of agents constitute the polygonal surface structures. This polygonal system is a bottom up approach of developing the complex surface that emerges through topological and topographical interaction between cells and their surrounding environment. Subsequently, the integrative system is developed through agent-based parametric modelling, in which the knowledge-based system as a top-down approach is substituted with the agent system together with its morphological features and significant behaviors.

summary This paper presents progress towards the definition of a motion grammar for robotic stereotomy. It describes a vocabulary of motions able to generate complex forms by cutting, slicing, and/or carving 3-D blocks of material using a robotic arm and a custom made cutting tool. While shape grammars usually deal with graphical descriptions of designs, a motion grammar seeks to address the 3-D harmonic movements of machine, tool, and material substrate choreographically, suggesting motion as a generative vehicle of exploration in both designing and making. Several models and prototypes are presented and discussed.

summary The research presented in the paper formulates part of the methodological approach of a recently completed PhD thesis. The principle aim of the thesis is to achieve simultaneous integration of tower subsystems which can coherently adapt to their internal and external context during the initial phases of the design process. In this framework, the tower subsystems are grouped as the structural system, floor system, vertical circulation system, facade system, and environmental system. The paper focuses on the implementation of the specific biomimetic analogies towards the integration of tower subsystems through computationally generated dynamic systems. The biomimetic analogies are the mechanical and organizational properties of branched constructions, the mechanical properties of the bamboo stem, and the micro-structure of the porcupine quill/ hedgehog spine. Each biomimetic analogy is described in relation to the design domain. Methods of employing the mathematical and geometrical principles of the biomimetic analogies during design explorations are elaborated. Outcomes of the design output are outlined and discussed with a concentration on achieving tower subsystem integration, differentiation, and co-adaptation properties.

title Harnessing Design Space: A Similarity-Based Exploration Method for Generative Design

summary Working with multiple alternatives is a central activity in design; therefore, we expect computational systems to support such work. There is a need to find out the tool features supporting this central activity so that we can build new systems. To explore such features, we propose a method that aims to enable interaction with a large number of design alternatives by similaritybased exploration. Using existing data analysis and visualization techniques adopting similarity-based search, we formalized the method and its elements by focusing on systematic filtering, clustering, and choosing alternatives. We present a scenario on developing conceptual designs for a residential apartment to illustrate how the method can be applied, as well as to reveal the limitation of current tools and the potential interactive clustering and filtering features for the new systems coupled with parametric design.

summary The noted 19th century biologist, Ernst Haeckel, put forward the idea that the growth (ontogenesis) of an organism recapitulated the history of its evolutionary development. While this idea is defunct within biology, the idea has been promoted in areas such as education (the idea of an education being the repetition of the civilizations before). In the research presented in this paper, recapitulation is used as a metaphor within computer-aided design as a way of grouping together different generations of spatial layouts. In most CAD programs, a spatial layout is represented as a series of objects (lines, or boundary representations) that stand in as walls. The relationships between spaces are not usually explicitly stated. A representation using Lindenmayer Systems (originally designed for the purpose of modelling plant morphology) is put forward as a way of representing the morphology of a spatial layout. The aim of this research is not just to describe an individual layout, but to find representations that link together lineages of development. This representation can be used in generative design as a way of creating more meaningful layouts which have particular characteristics. The use of genetic operators (mutation and crossover) is also considered, making this representation suitable for use with genetic algorithms.

summary Generative Design (GD) is a programming-based approach for Architecture that is becoming increasingly popular amongst architects. However, most Generative Design approaches were thought for traditional Computer Aided Design (CAD) tools and are not adequate for the Building Information Modeling (BIM) paradigm. This paper proposes a solution that extends GD to be used with BIM applications while preserving and taking advantage of its ideas. The solution will be evaluated by developing a connection between Revit, a well-known BIM tool, and Rosetta, a programming environment for GD, and by implementing the necessary programming language features that allows GD to be used in the context of BIM tool.

summary This paper presents research on the prototyping of multi-agent systems for architectural design. It proposes a design exploration methodology at the intersection of architecture, engineering, and computer science. The motivation of the work includes exploring bottom up generative methods coupled with optimizing performance criteria including for geometric complexity and objective functions for environmental, structural and fabrication parameters. The paper presents the development of a research framework and initial experiments to provide design solutions, which simultaneously satisfy complexly coupled and often contradicting objectives. The prototypical experiments and initial algorithms are described through a set of different design cases and agents within this framework; for the generation of façade panels for light control; for emergent design of shell structures; for actual construction of reciprocal frames; and for robotic fabrication. Initial results include multi-agent derived efficiencies for environmental and fabrication criteria and discussion of future steps for inclusion of human and structural factors.

summary It has been proposed that, after the internet age, we are now entering a new era of the '/Augmented Age/' (King, 2016). Physician Michio Kaku imagined the future of architects will be relying heavily on Augmented Reality technology (Kaku, 2015). Augmented reality technology is not a new technology and has been evolving rapidly. In the last three years, the technology has been applied in mainstream consumer devices (Coppens, 2017). This opened up possibilities in every aspect of our daily lives and it is expected that this will have a great impact on every field of consumer's technology in near future, including design and fabrication. What is the future of design and making? What kind of new digital fabrication paradigm will emerge from inevitable technological development? What kind of impact will this have on the built environment and industry? FlowMorph is a research project developed in the Bartlett School of Architecture, B-Pro AD with the collaboration of the authors and students as a 12 month MArch programme, we developed a unique design project trying to answer these questions which will be introduced in this paper.

summary In this paper we examine the adaptations cellular automata (CA) are typically subjected to when they are applied to architectural designing. We argue that, despite a number of earlier studies that portrayed CA as generic generative design tools, the transition from generic CA to specific design tools is not yet well understood. To describe this transition, we first examine this aspect in a number of previous studies relating CA to architectural design. In a following detailed analysis of an applied design case study, we trace similarities between findings made in the literature review to findings made in the case study and extend them with additional observations. We conclude with a summary of challenges and opportunities met by architectural designers employing and developing CA for design purposes.

summary It is understand the physical world is composed of various complex systems which behave and evolve in their own way. Through observing the motion of matters in physical world, we can start to understand various swarm behaviours, and these behaviours becomes a very rich library of references when exploring the potential of generative design. In the last 2 years, a new design procedure has been introduced in the digital architectural design studio of ** University. It does not start from site investigation or document research, but starts from any kind of physical experiment which the students are interested in. The students are asked to simulate the experiments in computer with software or scripts wrote by themselves. In the final stage, the students gather information through on-site investigation, and then use the digital tools they have developed to generate architectural design. Since the physical world is composed of huge amount of individual objects, all experiments explored in this design studio demonstrate certain swarm behaviours. These behaviours could be similar to that of the complex systems in architecture, or could imply new possibilities of organization in architecture.

summary The paper aims to address methods of realizing computationally generated self-organizing systems on a one-to-one scale with the employment of a singular material system. The case study described in this paper is the outcome of an investigation which has explored earth scaffolding, fabric form-work, and concrete materiality during an international three-week architecture workshop. Real-time generative form-finding methods based on branching and bundling systems in nature have been developed and simulated in an open-source programming environment. The outcome of the simulation stage has been analyzed structurally via Finite Element Analysis (FEA), results of which have served as inputs for the fine-tuning of the simulation. Final three-dimensional geometry has been fabricated by employing fabric, essentially forming the fabric form-work. summary Digital design/fabrication is slowly emancipating architectural design from its traditional static/representational role and endowing it instead with a new, generative function. In opposition to the classical isomorphism between drawings and buildings, wherein the second stand as translations of the first, the digital design/fabrication scenario does not strictly fall within a semiotic frame as much as within a quasi biological context, reminiscent of the Aristotelian notion of entelechy. For the digital data does not represent the building as much it actively works to become the building itself. Only upon sending a given file to a machine does the building begin to materialize as an empirical reality, And eventually a habitable space as we empirically know it. And until the digital data actualizes itself, the building qua building is no more than one single, potential possibility among many others. This new universe of digital design/fabrication does not only cause buildings to be produced as quick, precise, multiply-generated objects but also reduces their presence as original entities. Like cars and fashion items, built structures will soon be manufactured as routinely-consumed items that would look original only through the subtle mechanisms of flexibility: frequent alteration of prototype design (Style 2010, Style 2015..) and “perpetual profiling” (mine, yours, hers,..). The generic will necessarily take over the circumstantial. But this truth will be veiled since “customized prototypes” will be produced or altered to individual or personal specifications. This implies that certain “myths” have to be generated to speed up consumption, to stimulate excessive use and to lock people into a continuous system which can generate consumption through a vocabulary of interchangeable, layered and repeatable functions. Samples of “next season’s buildings” will be displayed and disseminated to enforce this strategy of stimulating and channeling desire. A degree of manipulation is involved, and the consumer is flattered into believing that his or her own free assessment of and choice between the options on offer will lead him or her to select the product the advertiser is seeking to sell. From the standpoint of the architect as a maker, the rising upsurge of digital design and fabrication could leave us mourning the loss of what has been a personal stomping ground, namely the intensity of the directly lived experiences of design and building. The direct, sensuous contact with drawings, models and materials is now being lost to a (digital) realm whose attributes refer to physical reality only remotely. Unlike (analogue) drawings and buildings, digital manipulations and prototypes do not exercise themselves in a real space, and are not subjected in the most rigorous way to spatial information. They denote in this sense a loss of immediacy and a withering of corporal thought. This flexible production of space and the consequent loss of immediate experience from the part of the designer will be analyzed within a theoretical framework underpinned mainly by the works of Walter Benjamin. Samples of digitally-produced objects will be used to illustrate this argument.

summary The paper demonstrates a work-in-progress research on an agent-based aggregation model for architectural applications with a system of assembly based on environmental data acted as a driver for a growth mechanism. Even though the generative design and algorithms have been widely employed in the field of art and architecture, such applications tend to stay in morphological explorations. This paper examines an aggregation model based on Diffusion Limited Aggregation system incorporating solar environment analysis for global perspective of aggregation, the geometry research for lattice systems, and morphological principles of unit module in agent scale. The later part of this research paper demonstrates the potential of a design process through the “Constructed Cloud” case study, including site-specific applications and the implementation of the systematized rule set.
