summary The current study explored different spatial training methods and investigated the sequence of processed-based mental simulation that was facilitated by various structures of external spatial representations, including 3D technology in Computer Aided-Architectural Design (CAAD), spatial cues, and/or technical languages. The goal was to better understand how these components fostered planning experiences and affected spatial ability acquisition framed as the formation of spatial mental models, for further developing spatial training environments fundamental to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education, specifically for architecture education and cognition. Two experiments were conducted using a between-subjects design to examine the effects of spatial training methods on spatial ability performance. Across both studies learners improved in their spatial skills, specifically the learners in the 3D-augmented virtual environments over the 3D-direct physical manipulation conditions. This study is built upon the work in the fields of computer-user interface, visuospatial thinking and human learning.

summary The number of variables acting upon urban landscapes is numerous and interconnected, closely resembling complex systems in constant dynamic transformation. Current analytical methods and descriptions of the city are domain specific, limited in scope, and discretize the city into quantifiable individual representations, resulting in an equally limited urban policy and design. If we are to produce urban systems capable of contributing to the robustness and resiliency of cities, we ought to understand and represent the comprehensive network of actors that construct contemporary urban landscapes. On one hand, the natural sciences approach the analysis of complex systems by primarily focusing on the development of models capable of describing their stochastic formation, remaining agnostic to the contextual properties of their individual components and oftentimes discretizing the otherwise continuous relationships among parts. signers work in groups. They need to share information either synchronously or asynchronously as they work with parametric modeling software, as with all computer-aided design tools. Receiving information from collaborators while working may intrude on their work and thought processes. Little research exists on how the reception of design updates influences designers in their work. Nor do we know much about designer preferences for collaboration. In this paper, we examine how sharing and receiving design updates affects designers’ performances and preferences. We present a system prototype to share changes on demand or in continuous mode while performing design tasks. A pilot study measuring the preferences of nine pairs of designers for different combinations of control modes and design tasks shows statistically significant differences between the task types and control modes. The types of tasks affect the preferences of users to the types of control modes. In an apparent contradiction, user preference of control modes contradicts task performance time.

summary Montevideo has a new visitor. In the heritage building of the german architect Karl Trambauer, located in the Old City, a new presence was installed filling the vacuum left by its former collapsed dome, seeking to restore a message, adding a new vision and recovering the lost dialogue between the architecture, the city and its inhabitants. This paper summarizes and explains the experience of the workshop Adaptation 2015, held on September 2015 at the Universidad de la República, Uruguay. Exposing the theoretical framework, design strategies, morphogenetic development, digital manufacturing experimentations, conclusions and open questions from the experience made. We will go through this temporary intervention on Trambauer’s building, being a rare but symbiotic object, with parametric genes, digital and handcrafted manufacture, and also looking for the impact of theory and academic practices in the city.

summary Designing and making a pavilion within a studio setting has been undertaken by various educators and researchers as a valuable pedagogy in the past 10 years. It aims to construct a collaborative environment that allows students to develop an integrated approach to learning; through association, teamwork and creative collaboration. Usually the tacit knowledge applied and acquired through making, and the knowledge of design strategy and analysis are separated in the way they are taught; it is often difficult to integrate these within the same coursework which often leads to students using digital software and fabrication tools as problem solving devices. This paper looks at an integrated approach to learning computational design and digital fabrication through the making of a pavilion by a Master level design studio. The paper discusses the pedagogy of making through creative collaboration and integrated workflow. It focuses on the use of digital and physical prototypes as devices to stimulate an oscillating dialogue between problem solving and puzzle making; a counterpoint for students to develop and search for new knowledge in order to create personalised learning experience. The paper concludes with an examination on the limits of digital prototype when interfaced with physical environment.

summary In the aspiration to design the built environment, architects and designers are continuously trying to create spaces that positively affect users. Both aspects of rational and emotional combined simultaneously with technological advancement are essential to implement in a comprehensive architectural design process. While our ability to create complex architectural forms through computation is in the state of a continuous improvement, our knowledge about their emotional effects over users remain ambiguous. Recent developments in simulation of virtual spaces, along with advancement in neuroscience may enable us to conduct an empirical research on the way we perceive space and the way space affects us emotionally. This paper presents initial results from an ongoing research that examines the connection between human feelings and architectural space. We discuss the first stage of the research in which as we examine the emotional reaction of designers and non-designers to various spatial geometries in an immersive 3D virtual environment inside a visualization laboratory. We then present the methodology for the second stage of the research, in which we repeat the experiment while using Electroencephalography (EEG) device together with a wireless eye tracker and emotional engagement measurements (EEM) system.

summary John Portman's work attracts much interest, although little scholarship exists that directly engages his contribution in formal composition. Most of the discussion of Portman's architecture tends to focus on his commercial work and hotels, although a key to understanding his work is found in his personal domestic projects where he has had the freedom to explore his architectural ideas. This study focuses on his first residence, Entelechy I, to begin outlining his design principles formally. The ambition is to open up the whole question of his architectural contribution in the United States and at large.

summary The prevalent mode of shape grammar output is a two-dimensional drawing grammar. For architectural applications, these two- dimensional shape rules can hold a variety of interpretations in three-dimensional space. This work translates an existing grammar from a manual two-dimensional drawing grammar to an automated three-dimensional building grammar to explore the challenges and opportunities that this translation suggests in the larger context of shape computation. The case study considered here is a grammar interpreting John Portman’s architectural language as defined by the house Portman identifies as emblematic of his design principles, his 1964 personal residence Entelechy I.

summary This paper presents a computational space adjacency analysis method by integrating information and analysis from process flow methods used in the healthcare system with space syntax methods used in architecture. These methods involve similar conceptual properties related to activity, space and flow. However, their implementation in the building programming process is disconnected, and relies solely on experience and expert opinions. The basic approach for the integration was by abstracting these similar properties in the process flow diagram, space connectivity diagram, and justified plan graph into nodes and edges representations. A case study of a clinic that is currently in the construction phase was used to develop the integration procedure and comparison analysis with the actual floorplan.

summary This paper presents the results from exploring the impact of using a parametric design tool on designers’ behaviour in terms of using design patterns in the early conceptual development stage. It is based on an empirical cognitive study in which eight architectural designers were asked to complete two architectural design tasks with similar complexity respectively in a parametric design environment (PDE) and a Geometric modelling environment (GME). Protocol analysis was employed to study the designers’ behaviour. To explore the development of design patterns during the design process, we utilise the technique of Markov model analysis. Through Markov models analysis of the PDE and GME results, we found that there are significantly more Function to Structure transitions in PDE than in GME. During this transition process, designers select an existing structure/solution for the particular function/design problem based on their experience or knowledge, which is a process of applying an existing design pattern to the problem. From this result we can infer that when architects apply programming and scripting in their design, such as in a PDE, they exhibit the characteristic of using design patterns.

summary This article describes and analyzes experiments conducted during the development of the master’s work entitled “Parameterized Modeling of Accessibility Design Details: Work Flow In order to have reusability, interoperability and materialization”. Such experiments intended to investigate and verify the potential of interoperability between different architecture software. It was verified the possibility of materialization and reuse of models, where the details worked with a new guise through the context of developing and creating a project in which it was inserted. The difficulties of accessing, sharing and editing data and information were evaluated. The results obtained allowed to identify features and limitations related to the models and their formats.

summary This paper presents a workflow called the ‘heuristic optimization workflow’ that integrates Octopus, a Multi-Objective Optimization (MOO) engine with Grasshopper3D, a parametric modeling tool, and multiple simulation software. It describes a process that enables the designer to integrate disparate domains via Octopus and complete a feedback loop with the developed interactive, real-time visualization tools. A retrospective design of the Bow Tower in Calgary is used as a test case to study the impact of the developed workflow and tools, as well as the impact of MOO on the performance of the solutions. The overall workflow makes MOO based results more accessible to designers and encourages a more interactive ‘heuristic’ exploration of various geometric and topological trajectories. The workflow also reduces design decision uncertainty and design cycle latency through the incorporation of a feedback loop between geometric models and their associated quantitative data. It is through the juxtaposition of extreme performing solutions that serendipity is created and the potential for better multiple performing solutions is increased.es responsive systems, which focus on the implementation of multi-objective adaptive design prototypes from sensored environments. The intention of the work is to investigate multi-objective criteria both as a material system and as a processing system by creating prototypes with structural integrity, where the thermal energy flow through the prototype, to be understood as a membrane, can be controlled and the visual transparency altered. The work shows performance based feedback systems and physical prototype models driven by information streaming, screening, and application.

summary Digital Heritage is amphibian by spanning between unreal-real (digital) and real-real (actual) environments. Or its amphiboly derives from a fact that relies not on contrasting realities but a hub from which an oscillation occurs between the real and the actual. Inferring to Baudrillard’s criticism of contemporary art, this paper presents these disparities and ambivalent conditions found in digital heritage by examining a full-dome media-art application called Look-Up. Touching upon the authenticity issue in cultural heritage, a design research project, Augmenting Kashgar, is then introduced on the basis of the claim that a design manner can fuse conflicts within Digital Heritage. Developed within the special context of Kashgar, China’s westernmost city, the methodology of the project that follows a Research through Design (RtD) approach is provided. Making use of the architectural features of Kashgar, designing a digital game as a counter-strategy to existing cultural heritage programmes is discussed with references to Baudrillard’s perspective on video games and gamers.

summary The following research investigates the development of an agent-based design method as an integrative design tool for polygonal surface structures. The aim of this research is to develop a computational tool that self-organizes the emergence of polygonal surface structures from interaction between its constitutive lattices. This research focuses on the ethological level of morphogenesis that is relevant to the animal or insect societies, whereby agents mediate the material organizations with environmental aspects. Meanwhile, behavior-based approaches are investigated as a bottom-up system to develop a computational framework in which the lower-level features constantly interact. The lower-level features such as material properties (e.g., geometric descriptions) are abstracted into building blocks or agents to construct the agent’s morphology. The abstracted principles, which define the agent’s morphology, are aggregated into a generative tool to explore the emergent complexities. This exploration coupled with the generative constraint mechanisms steers the collective agents system toward the cloud of solutions; hence, the collective behaviors of agents constitute the polygonal surface structures. This polygonal system is a bottom up approach of developing the complex surface that emerges through topological and topographical interaction between cells and their surrounding environment. Subsequently, the integrative system is developed through agent-based parametric modelling, in which the knowledge-based system as a top-down approach is substituted with the agent system together with its morphological features and significant behaviors.

summary Challenging our contemporary understanding of representation and simulation in architecture SCI-Arc has been developing a unique digital/physical design platform where the relationships between humans, machines and matter are constantly in flux re-calibrating, reshuffling, reordering aligning digital and physical and vis versa. The robot as a technology takes an important role in these new ideation environments. “Live” is an applicaton which enables real-time robotic control and grants the robot substantial agency situating it as an interactive design tool that immediately responds to designed signal and sensor inputs in its environment. Current research explores interactive environments, gesture based human-machine interactions and autonomous agent driven design programs.

summary This paper approaches the insertion of an objectile in the homogeneous space of a school, looking to bring flexibility and responsiveness to assist a user with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The research concerns with photosensitivity, a problem faced by almost 25% of the children with autism (Miller-Horn; Spence; Takeoka, 2011). The study is based on the theories for ASD environments that speak of ‘sensorial perception’ and ‘thinking with imagery’ (Mostafa, 2008), and the coexistence of Sensory Design Theory and Neuro-Typical Method (Pomana, 2015). The result consists of a gadget developed in MIT App Inventor tool and a curtain that interact responsively through an Arduino code, for a new connection between the user and his surroundings.

summary This paper discusses current design and communication imaging techniques in a comparative analysis between three contemporary projects - the first, a new hotel concept in Sardinia, Italy, the second, an urban park in Mumbai, India, and the third, a new housing community in La Prusia, Nicaragua. Starting with an overview discussion problematizing the roots and current state of envisioning heritage, the paper first questions the common oversimplification of envisioning heritage as a strictly aesthetic or stylistic act. Next the paper explores the complex interplay between the design communication methods in each of the three case study projects, situating each in a critical global context. From there, the paper concludes with an expanded discussion of imaging as it relates to design thinking and communication through an examination of the techniques that were employed to graphically communicate each individual project.

summary Calligraphy is one of the important cultures in Chinese world. The rich strokes, structures and forms make the Chinese calligraphy an art. As the writing script is closely correlated to the emotions of the writer, a lot of scholars explore the correlation between the Chinese calligraphy lines and affect from the perspectives of psychology and art. In this study, it introduces the affective-computing technology and combines the digital media from the perspective of Chinese calligraphy and emotions, to develop an interactive calligraphy-art device. It re-interprets the Chinese calligraphy art with the digital tool and installs the pulse sensor and pressure sensor in the Chinese pen brush, so as to detect the user’s pulse and writing power. Moreover, it converts the physiological signals into affect and provides visual feedback in real time, which includes the changes and motions of the Chinese calligraphy lines. The study proposes contacting the traditional Chinese calligraphy with a new human-computer interaction mode. With the visual feedback effect during the interaction, it allows the user to know the close correlation between the Chinese calligraphy and the emotions. Through the work, the Chinese calligraphy art can be carried forward.

summary The design, manufacturing and assembly of SSFS (Same Slope - Folded Surface) Pavilion, is presented as a collaborative design experience recently developed between two Ibero-American universities (USevilla-UNL). In this experimental research, Graphic Thought feeds on the strategic use of developable geometries like to achieve outstanding manufacturing and installation of a temporary Folded composition. The practical exercise, results in a procedural model of open applications, nonlinear, for the generation of pavilions with different solutions adapted to each particular context.

summary Existing performance-based design exploration methods typically suffer from a lack of real-time feedback and a lack of actionable feedback. This paper proposes a hybrid design exploration method that overcomes these issues by combining parametric modelling, surrogate modelling, and evolutionary algorithms. The proposed method is structured as a mixed-initiative approach, in which parametric modelling is the key to creating a synergistic relationship between the architect and the computational system. Surrogate-based techniques will address the issue of real-time feedback, the evolutionary exploration techniques will address the issue of actionable feedback. As a first stage in developing the PEX method, this paper reports on two experiments conducted to identify an appropriate surrogate modelling technique that is efficient and robust.
