summary Current research treats walkability in cities as an urban asset, to be identified by formal methods in order to let people benefit from it. In this paper, we take an activity-based view on the subject, arguing that walkability is not an end in itself but must always be seen from the standpoint of a specific activity to be performed. More precisely, we look at the specific walkability when seeking to perform an activity 'a' (e.g. shopping) within a given time budget 'b' (e.g. 15 minutes). Based on these two factors, we have devised a grid-based analysis method that computes transitions between grid cells. As result, we get a walkability map that extends the traditional 'proximity-based' understanding of neighborhoods by the notion of goal-directed pedestrians. To argue for the applicability of our approach, we showcase i it in two cities with different urban structure (Yerevan and Wiener Neustadt) before concluding.

summary Working with and against environmental processes, such as the movement of water, earth, and rock, and terrain, has been a perpetual challenge since the dawn of civilisation. While it has been possible to gradually tame many landscapes to perform in a predictable manner, there are many circumstances where we are forced to live with and around such processes in everyday life. This research is primarily interested in the potential of design to interact with such processes. Specifically, we are interested in the designed redirection of erosion and landslide processes already observable in nature, taking the urbanised hillsides of the Alps as test case scenario. The research specialisation continues a research and design focus specialised on processes material deposition of river and flood systems, further down the water catchment chain (REF: ANON 2012). This specific alpine research is compelling in the context of Anthropocene processes, we are specifically focussed in the appraisal, harnessing and redirection of existing environmental phenomena, given what can be understood as our inevitable interaction with these processes (Sijmons 2015). Within this broader research, which has ecological, cultural, and formal potential, this paper shall explore the practical aspects of connecting design, and the designer, with the potential for understanding and designing these evolving mountain landscapes. There is a long history behind the development of landscape elements which control avalanches, mud, rock, and landslides. The cultural, functional and aesthetic role of such elements in the landscape is relatively undiscussed, epitomising an approach that is primarily pragmatic in both engineering and expense. It is perhaps no surprise that these elements have a dominant physical and visual presence in the contemporary landscape. Through the investigation of synergies with other systems, interests, and design potential for such landscape elements, it is proposed that new potential can be found in their implementation. This research proposes that the intuitive linking of common design software to direct landslide simulation, design of and cultural use can interact with these natural processes. This paper shall demonstrate methods to within which design can enter the process of landscape management, linking the modelling processes of the landscape designer with the simulation capabilities of the specialised engineer.

summary While new software interfaces are making the interaction between humans and robots more pedestrian, there is still an extremely complex workflow from the conception of data on the part of humans to the final action of the arm. In order to continue to promote and advance the use of these versatile tools in architecture, pedagogical strategies are needed to better enable users to engage with them quickly and obtain results while minimising frustration. This paper will outline a pedagogical strategy for introducing the multi-layered levels of knowledge and understanding required to operate a 6-axis robotic arm as developed in undergraduate architectural coursework. It will highlight the various learning modules created in order to deliver the necessary information for understanding the complex operational pipeline required to interact with and operate the robotic arm successfully.

summary The discourse to mould Building Information Modelling (BIM) into the early architecture education has been escalated in many scholar papers and discussions. Scenarios are made to obtain optimum educational deliverance. However, the response from students’ perspective to the outlined subject has not been reviewed in terms of their competences, especially in Indonesian higher education where architectural computing education is relatively new. After BIM is delivered in two semesters span in the early stage at Bina Nusantara University, Faculty of Engineering, Architecture Department, survey is conducted to depict their understanding. This article is the feedback report, which shows that the students were self-convinced to the potential of BIM and its future. In achieving that particular level, the combination of various delivery methods is the utmost strategy to accompany the design studio with BIM.

summary The number of variables acting upon urban landscapes is numerous and interconnected, closely resembling complex systems in constant dynamic transformation. Current analytical methods and descriptions of the city are domain specific, limited in scope, and discretize the city into quantifiable individual representations, resulting in an equally limited urban policy and design. If we are to produce urban systems capable of contributing to the robustness and resiliency of cities, we ought to understand and represent the comprehensive network of actors that construct contemporary urban landscapes. On one hand, the natural sciences approach the analysis of complex systems by primarily focusing on the development of models capable of describing their stochastic formation, remaining agnostic to the contextual properties of their individual components and oftentimes discretizing the otherwise continuous relationships among parts. signers work in groups. They need to share information either synchronously or asynchronously as they work with parametric modeling software, as with all computer-aided design tools. Receiving information from collaborators while working may intrude on their work and thought processes. Little research exists on how the reception of design updates influences designers in their work. Nor do we know much about designer preferences for collaboration. In this paper, we examine how sharing and receiving design updates affects designers’ performances and preferences. We present a system prototype to share changes on demand or in continuous mode while performing design tasks. A pilot study measuring the preferences of nine pairs of designers for different combinations of control modes and design tasks shows statistically significant differences between the task types and control modes. The types of tasks affect the preferences of users to the types of control modes. In an apparent contradiction, user preference of control modes contradicts task performance time.

summary This paper presents a methodology to collect and visualize social media data about art, in order to map art locations in cities using geo-localized data, and comparing planning decisions with the actual use of spaces. As various social networks have penetrated into the daily life of people, these become one important and effective data source to understand how people perform 'arts' around the city [Shah, 2015]. The case study for this methodology is Singapore, a vibrant city where art and culture are being promoted in the light of an emerging creative economy. The Singapore government promotes art and creates 'art clusters', such as art districts, galleries, fairs and museums in the city. Additionally, artists, creative entrepreneurs, consumers, and critics seek and explore alternative spaces. Understanding where art and creativity are discussed, broadcasted and consumed in Singapore is a key point to have better insights into art space planning, and study its effects on the city.The paper will try to answer the following research question:Is it possible to discover, through social network data, spaces where art is produced, discussed, and broadcasted to an audience in Singapore? How?

summary This document shows a rationalisation method of sheet metal panelling on free-formed surfaces and a case study of it. Ichimonji-buki is a cladding method widely used in Japan for the roofs of traditional temples and shrines. It consists of sheet metal roofing with flat lock seams, allowing for minimal gaps along the joints. By integrating the characteristics of the flat lock joint and a dynamic relaxation analysis via computational modelling, continuous vertical seam lines can be realised while keeping panels almost identical in shape and with a limited number of variations. In the case study of Silver Mountain, the free-formed roof is clad with approximately 8,000 panels, out of which 92% are standardised and can be easily fabricated.

summary The aim of this work is to try to set out how new technologies can influence the perception of a museum exposition. The problem which will be analysed is how to adapt an exhibition to the needs of visually impaired people. The problem will be considered on the basis of the case studies which were the part of an agreement between the Army museum in Bialystok and our Faculty. In traditional museums the main principle is the prohibition of touching exhibits.The project goal was to help blind people understand the features of the environment around them through the sense of touch. The novelty of this work is the study of how new digital technologies may improve the perception for the visually impaired.In the paper the method of 3D scanning, modelling and 3D printing will be presented. In conclusion the encountered problems and plans for further action will be discussed.

summary The following research investigates the development of an agent-based design method as an integrative design tool for polygonal surface structures. The aim of this research is to develop a computational tool that self-organizes the emergence of polygonal surface structures from interaction between its constitutive lattices. This research focuses on the ethological level of morphogenesis that is relevant to the animal or insect societies, whereby agents mediate the material organizations with environmental aspects. Meanwhile, behavior-based approaches are investigated as a bottom-up system to develop a computational framework in which the lower-level features constantly interact. The lower-level features such as material properties (e.g., geometric descriptions) are abstracted into building blocks or agents to construct the agent’s morphology. The abstracted principles, which define the agent’s morphology, are aggregated into a generative tool to explore the emergent complexities. This exploration coupled with the generative constraint mechanisms steers the collective agents system toward the cloud of solutions; hence, the collective behaviors of agents constitute the polygonal surface structures. This polygonal system is a bottom up approach of developing the complex surface that emerges through topological and topographical interaction between cells and their surrounding environment. Subsequently, the integrative system is developed through agent-based parametric modelling, in which the knowledge-based system as a top-down approach is substituted with the agent system together with its morphological features and significant behaviors.

summary The underlying thesis of the research described in this paper is that imaginative, model-based explorations may help us better understand iconic architectural artefacts, such as cultural heritage projects. In order to systematically consider and study architectural artefacts, it is essential for academics to reach a level of clarity – and potentially even consensus – concerning the domains of architectural design that may be considered relevant and to question - often implicitly – shared conceptions. This paper intends to communicate the results and findings of an in-depth case-based exploration on the basis of ten design artefacts, using a specially developed conceptual framework. Furthermore, the aim was to draw conclusions concerning the benefits and potentials of this approach in the context of heritage-based architectural research in an academic environment.

summary Early design phase energy modelling is used to provide the design team with feedback about the impact of various building configurations. For better energy-conscious and sustainable building design and operation, the construction of BIM data interoperability for energy performance assessment in the early design phase is important. The purpose of this study is to suggest a development of BIM data interoperability for energy performance assessment based on BIM. To archive this, the authors have investigated advantages of BIM-based energy performance assessment through comparison with traditional energy performance assessment; and suggest requirements for development of Open BIM environment such as BIM data creation and BIM data application. In addition, the authors also suggested on BIM data interoperability system and developed mapping interface.

summary Existing performance-based design exploration methods typically suffer from a lack of real-time feedback and a lack of actionable feedback. This paper proposes a hybrid design exploration method that overcomes these issues by combining parametric modelling, surrogate modelling, and evolutionary algorithms. The proposed method is structured as a mixed-initiative approach, in which parametric modelling is the key to creating a synergistic relationship between the architect and the computational system. Surrogate-based techniques will address the issue of real-time feedback, the evolutionary exploration techniques will address the issue of actionable feedback. As a first stage in developing the PEX method, this paper reports on two experiments conducted to identify an appropriate surrogate modelling technique that is efficient and robust.

summary Recent developments in Additive Manufacturing are creating possibilities to make not only rapid prototypes, but directly manufactured customised components. This paper investigates the potential for combining standard building materials with customised nodes that are individually optimised in response to local load conditions in non-standard, irregular, or doubly curved frame structures. This research iteration uses as a vehicle for investigation the SmartNodes Pavilion, a temporary structure with 3D printed nodes built for the 2015 Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism/Architecture in Hong Kong. The pavilion is the most recent staged output of the SmartNodes Project. It builds on the findings in earlier iterations by introducing topologically constrained node forms that marry the principals of the evolved optimised node shape with topological constraints imposed to meet the printing challenges. The 4m high canopy scale prototype structure in this early design research iteration represents the node forms using plastic Fused Deposition Modelling (FDM).

summary The following paper provides reflections on the importance of analytical drawings in the process of understanding the architectural built heritage together with relevant aspects to analyse, theories and tools to produce them. The role of these graphic works is to analyse, document and communicate only a few aspects of the building. The main aim is to undertake an analysis through the use of one or more drawings representing the graphic translation of an analytical thought. The piece of writing presents a theoretical approach and examples of analytical drawings produced during previous researches, using CAD and 3d modelling software, to investigate some tangible and intangible characteristics of the architectural heritage.

summary This article delineates the process of developing the project "Urbanimals" - an interactive installation designed and realised in Bristol, UK, in 2015. As the case study research, it draws attention to the difficulties in designing interactive structures in urban spaces - from an architects' idea to a construction stage. There are four areas that are being investigated: (1) Modelling interactions, (2) Negotiating locations and logistics, (3) Developing hardware and (4) Performing the on-site observations. The project draws from the idea of Smart City (SC) as the concept of the urban environment with a certain level of responsiveness through implementing a technology-driven matter that expands city offer perceivable, but gentle and not hindering way. It highlights the possible applications of projection technology and the utilisation of the 3D modelling software which provides complex tools for creating animations, movements and interactions with future users. The article gives clues how to design more engaging interactions and how to deal with implementing them in public realm.

summary The noted 19th century biologist, Ernst Haeckel, put forward the idea that the growth (ontogenesis) of an organism recapitulated the history of its evolutionary development. While this idea is defunct within biology, the idea has been promoted in areas such as education (the idea of an education being the repetition of the civilizations before). In the research presented in this paper, recapitulation is used as a metaphor within computer-aided design as a way of grouping together different generations of spatial layouts. In most CAD programs, a spatial layout is represented as a series of objects (lines, or boundary representations) that stand in as walls. The relationships between spaces are not usually explicitly stated. A representation using Lindenmayer Systems (originally designed for the purpose of modelling plant morphology) is put forward as a way of representing the morphology of a spatial layout. The aim of this research is not just to describe an individual layout, but to find representations that link together lineages of development. This representation can be used in generative design as a way of creating more meaningful layouts which have particular characteristics. The use of genetic operators (mutation and crossover) is also considered, making this representation suitable for use with genetic algorithms.

summary The AEC industry has been facing a digital transformation for improving services involved in buildings lifecycle, fostered by two disruptive technologies: Building Information Modelling (BIM) and Internet of Things (IoT). However, the literature lacks discussions regarding applications and challenges of BIM and IoT systems in the AEC. This Systematic Literature Mapping addresses this gap through search, analysis, and classification of 75 journal article abstracts published between 2015 and 2019. An increase of articles over the period is observed, predominantly with technical and processual solutions for Construction and Operation and Maintenance. The interoperability of data is a key challenge to organizations.

summary A shape grammar-based computational system for chair design is presented. The paper focuses on the development of a methodology for modelling the definition stage of the design process. It is achieved by incorporating a specific grammar into a generic grammar to assist the designer in the convergence activities during the definition stage. Both grammars and their respective implementations were previously developed by different authors. The purpose is to enable the generation of a generic design solution that encompasses characteristics of a specific style, thus permitting subsequent exploration in the development stage.

summary This paper outlines a research project that explores the participation in, and perception of, advanced technologies in architectural professional practice through a sociotechnical lens and presents empirical research findings from an online survey distributed to employees in five large-scale architectural practices in Sydney, Australia. This argues that while the computational design paradigm might be well accepted, understood, and documented in academic research contexts, the extent and ways that computational design thinking and methods are put-into-practice has to date been less explored. In engineering and construction, technology adoption studies since the mid 1990s have measured information technology (IT) use (Howard et al. 1998; Samuelson and Björk 2013). In architecture, research has also focused on quantifying IT use (Cichocka 2017), as well as the examination of specific practices such as building information modelling (BIM) (Cardoso Llach 2017; Herr and Fischer 2017; Son et al. 2015). With the notable exceptions of Daniel Cardoso Llach (2015; 2017) and Yanni Loukissas (2012), few scholars have explored advanced technologies in architectural practice from a sociotechnical perspective. This paper argues that a sociotechnical lens can net valuable insights into advanced technology engagement to inform pedagogical approaches in architectural education as well as strategies for continuing professional development.

summary The importance of decisions made during the early design stages has prompted researchers to advocate the use of building performance simulation (BPS) during that stage. This paper investigates non-manifold topology (NTM) as a novel approach to 3D modelling that has the potential to be highly compatible with the early design stages and with the input requirements for BPS. The proposed approach avoids the process of simplifying polyhedral models produced by Building Information Modelling (BIM) software to conduct BPS. In particular, NTM allows for a clear segmentation of a building, unambiguous space boundaries, and perfectly matched surfaces and glazing subsurfaces. The NTM approach was tested through a software prototype that integrates 3D modelling software and an energy simulation engine.
