title Hybrid Sentient Canopy: An implementation and visualization of proprioreceptive curiosity-based machine learning
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.acadia.2016.362
source ACADIA // 2016: POSTHUMAN FRONTIERS: Data, Designers, and Cognitive Machines [Proceedings of the 36th Annual Conference of the Association for Computer Aided Design in Architecture (ACADIA) ISBN 978-0-692-77095-5] Ann Arbor 27-29 October, 2016, pp. 362-371
summary This paper describes the development of a sentient canopy that interacts with human visitors by using its own internal motivation. Modular curiosity-based machine learning behaviour is supported by a highly distributed system of microprocessor hardware integrated within interlinked cellular arrays of sound, light, kinetic actuators and proprioreceptive sensors in a resilient physical scaffolding system. The curiosity-based system involves exploration by employing an expert system composed of archives of information from preceding behaviours, calculating potential behaviours together with locations and applications, executing behaviour and comparing result to prediction. Prototype architectural structures entitled Sentient Canopy and Sentient Chamber developed during 2015 and 2016 were developed to support this interactive behaviour, integrating new communications protocols and firmware, and a hybrid proprioreceptive system that configured new electronics with sound, light, and motion sensing capable of internal machine sensing and externally- oriented sensing for human interaction. Proprioreception was implemented by producing custom electronics serving photoresistors, pitch-sensing microphones, and accelerometers for motion and position, coupled to sound, light and motion-based actuators and additional infrared sensors designed for sensing of human gestures. This configuration provided the machine system with the ability to calculate and detect real-time behaviour and to compare this to models of behaviour predicted within scripted routines. Testbeds located at the Living Architecture Systems Group/Philip Beesley Architect Inc. (LASG/PBAI, Waterloo/Toronto), Centre for Information Technology (CITA, Copenhagen) National Academy of Sciences (NAS) in Washington DC are illustrated.

summary Multi-criteria optimisation searches by a genetic algorithm define a Pareto optimal front, a state in which one objective can only be improved at the expense of another. But optimisation is not a search for the best but for better - the goal is to improve performance by trading-off conflicting criteria or objectives. A live case study is the focus of this search with parameters behaving as genes and objectives as the environmental shapers of the phenotype. The genetic algorithm is an effective and powerful tool in the computational design tool box, one which can improve the design process and the fitness of its outcomes.

summary This paper describes methods, processes and the outcome of the reconstruction in the medieval wooden settlement complex in Pultusk, Poland. It is the result of the interdisciplinary cooperation between architects from Warsaw University of Technology and archaeologists from Regional Museum of Pultusk. They have undertaken the research issues of information exchange and knowledge-building processes in the digital environment. Main issues were related to the methods of computer reconstruction in architectural and urban scale, which enable alternative narrative threads. To achieve this, parametric techniques were adopted and the 'Pultusk Recontructor' application was developed in Grasshopper. The interaction between architects and archaeologists over hypotheses and alternatives was supported in urban scale by 'Rapid Reconstruction Modular Model'. This 3D printed urban model, consist of segments which can be simultaneously exchanged. It became not only a substrate for scientific debate, but also may serve an education role for the permanent Museum exhibition.

summary Modular Light Cloud is an installation that is conceived to explore the boundaries of architecture and art. Its interactivity is a metaphor of mutual influences that derive from activities performed in space - associated with motion, sound and light. It is an experimental project focused on the integration of architectural elements, structure, information technology, performing arts, electronics and digital fabrication in architectural education. The project was completed in a two-week student workshop in collaboration with a contemporary dance artist. The students were taught the basics of parametric design, programming of electronic components and digital fabrication during tutorial classes. The making process combined three stages of development: design, construction and programming of interaction. The final form consists of two irregular spatial trusses made of aluminum profiles connected with 3d printed nodes. The profiles are equipped with LED strips and electronic components: light sensors, sound and communication between them. These systems control the intensity of light emitted by the diodes based on the inputs. The result is a working prototype presented as interactive installation featuring contemporary dance artist. It was displayed at art festivals and other events.

summary Tensegrity structures are not commonly found within the current discourse of architecture. The reason may be that they can only be designed through physical form finding processes. This paper will show how architects can gain the ability to design these structures digitally utilizing physics engines that simulate these form finding processes in real time. To demonstrate this, the paper will use the Underwood Pavilion as a case study to describe a design process that replaces traditional methodologies by digital methods, suggesting a new parametric design approach for lightweight structures and envelopes.

title Performative Design and Fabrication of a Parametric Wall Screen for Tropical Climates - A Modular Approach
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.ecaade.2015.2.521
source Martens, B, Wurzer, G, Grasl T, Lorenz, WE and Schaffranek, R (eds.), Real Time - Proceedings of the 33rd eCAADe Conference - Volume 2, Vienna University of Technology, Vienna, Austria, 16-18 September 2015, pp. 521-530
summary We have developed a modular approach to the parametric design of a patterned façade for tropical climates, using a “lighter” data set and model that integrates a number of performance considerations. This modular approach separates the façade's design into form, façade pattern, façade density requirements, and façade components, and reintegrates these aspects via a triangular mesh, represented as a fast and convenient data structure based on half-edges. Through this separation, the design team can simultaneously work on the architectural appearance of the design, its performance, and its fabrication, while retaining holistic control through the constant reintegration of design changes via the half-edge data structure. In this way, we retain the advantages of a parametrically driven design process, such as automatic design generation and the integration of performance aspects, while permitting more flexible and non-sequential design explorations by different members of the design team.

summary The Klimasymmetry research project is part of ongoing investigations that ask how the design of a surface emanating radiant heating and cooling can influence the non-visual spatial boundaries created by asymmetrical thermal conditions. This research investigates the nature of the surface as an initiator of a thermal environment in an attempt to locate thermal tactility and the spatial perception according to radiant heat transfer. Surface qualities such as the quantity of area and thermal capacity of the material affects the ability of the panel to emit or absorb electromagnetic radiation, informing the geometry, topography, and location of each panel relative to the human body.

summary The aim of this work is to try to set out how new technologies can influence the perception of a museum exposition. The problem which will be analysed is how to adapt an exhibition to the needs of visually impaired people. The problem will be considered on the basis of the case studies which were the part of an agreement between the Army museum in Bialystok and our Faculty. In traditional museums the main principle is the prohibition of touching exhibits. The project goal was to help blind people understand the features of the environment around them through the sense of touch. The novelty of this work is the study of how new digital technologies may improve the perception for the visually impaired. In the paper the method of 3D scanning, modelling and 3D printing will be presented. In conclusion the encountered problems and plans for further action will be discussed.

summary For several years great effort has been devoted to the study of Architectural Design Optimization (ADO). However, although in the recent years ADO has attracted much attention from academia, optimization methods and tools have had a limited influence on the architectural profession. The aim of the study is to reveal users' expectations from the optimization tools and define limitations preventing wide-spread adaptation of the optimization solvers in the architectural practice. The paper presents the results of the survey "Optimization in the architectural practice" conducted between December 2015 and February 2016 on 165 architectural trainees and practising architects from 34 countries. The results show that there is a need for an interactive multi-objective optimization tool, as 78% respondents declared that a multi-objective optimization is more necessary in their practice than a single objective one and 91% of them acknowledged the need for choice of promising solutions during optimization process. Finally, it has been found that daylight, structure and geometry are three top factors which architects are interested in optimizing.

title Embodied Emotions: Observations and Experiments in Architecture and Corporeality
source University of Lisbon
summary This thesis is dedicated to the topic of the relationship between the Body and Architecture, in particular regarding the contemporary “embodied mind” theory. It includes a theoretical review on the topic based on the study of the different ways Architecture has followed the transformations that the views on the Body have endured throughout Western history, under the evolution and influence of different disciplines such as philosophy, technology, science, religion and art. Within this context, the thesis proposes a methodology based on performance arts, which explores the use of embodied practices in design education. Such a methodology aimed at testing how it is possible to influence users’ emotions using architectural space. The thesis argues that this can be achieved through a process of empathy between the users’ body and architectural space. To support this claim, the thesis presents a set of experiments undertaken in the context of architectural teaching. The results of such experiments were evaluated through the analysis of video and photo documentation, as well as through quantitative and qualitative data collected using emotion measurement tools and questionnaires, respectively.

title Cost Performance Based Design - Using Digital Technology for Cost Performance Simulation in the Conceptual Phase of Design
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.ecaade.2015.1.619

summary This work studies the Performance-Based Design approach, focusing exclusively on cost performance, asking how to launch the architectural portion thinking of the cost of the building in a way that such performance can directly influence the project design and architectural form and how can shape, type and structure of the building influence the final cost of the work. For this, we chose to analyze the DProfiler software for the development of models in order to produce an architectural form that directly meets the performance cost requirements, following specified formal language, which aligns cost and project intention in the initial phase of the design. The research showed that the use of Macro BIM software platform is promising and that the generative design process can and should arise from an organization of the parts and not from predefining it as a whole, achieving an architectural project that is attainable and more sustainable.

title To reform or not to reform? Analysis of the influence of the shape in the customization of apartment projects
source SIGRADI 2015 [Proceedings of the 19th Conference of the Iberoamerican Society of Digital Graphics - vol. 2 - ISBN: 978-85-8039-133-6] Florianópolis, SC, Brasil 23-27 November 2015, pp. 677-685.
summary The starting point for this research was carried out through an investigation that measured in what extent original projects proposed by the real estate market were customized, resulting in Reformed Projects. It is known that many factors can influence this customization process. This phase of the research is restricted to formal and constructive factors, aiming to analyze how these can influence the customization. The shape grammar, used as an analytical tool, showed that the shape of the original projects had little influence on the result of the reformed ones, indicating that factors of other nature may be more decisive in the customization process.

summary The objective of the paper is to find the relationship between the visitors’ traffic flows throughout the park and the distribution of the service facilities in four different Disneyland theme parks. This paper argues that there are patterns for attraction placement of specific functions such as shops, restaurants, and attractions to manipulate the human traffic. Instead of evaluating moving time and visitors’ preferences, we focused on analysing the spatial arrangements of the thematic areas and the locations of the service facilities to understand which factors influence the traffics around attractions. To do that, an agent analysis method is used to simulate the human traffics which was then analyzed with each service capacities, theme park routes, number of restaurants, shops and attractions in each thematic areas. Our results indicate that there are shared patterns of traffic flows around attractions for four different Disneyland parks. Moreover, the traffic flows around attractions did not show significant relationship with attraction capacities themselves for all of the Disneylands.

title ModRule: A user-centric mass housing design platform
source The next city - New technologies and the future of the built environment [16th International Conference CAAD Futures 2015. Sao Paulo, July 8-10, 2015. Electronic Proceedings/ ISBN 978-85-85783-53-2] Sao Paulo, Brazil, July 8-10, 2015, pp. 325.
summary This paper presents a novel platform, ModRule, designed and developed to promote and facilitate collaboration between architects and future occupants during the design stage of mass housing buildings. Architects set the design-framework and parameters of the system, which allows the users to set their space requirements, budgets, etc., and define their desired way of living. The system utilizes gamification methodologies as a reference to promote incentives and user-friendliness for the layperson who has little or no architectural background. This enhanced integration of a both bottom-up approach (user-centric/player) with a top-down approach (architect-centric/game-maker) will greatly influence how architects design high rise living. By bridging the gap between the architect and the user, this development aims to instill a greater sense of belonging to people, as well as providing architects with a better understanding of how to give people more control over their living spaces. The paper also presents an evaluation of a design process that employed ModRule.

summary The building industry is a field even more complex, characterized by different risks which can deeply influence the success of a building construction process. Aim of this paper is to demonstrate how the risk, declined in the main aspects that affects the construction industry, can be properly modelled and reduced thanks to the innovation of existing design methods and tools. The goal is to enhance the BIM models with AR (augmented reality), in order to intervene in the risk management process, increasing the level of knowledge exchanged between actors and, consequently, reduce defects related to misunderstandings. This can be possible using AR visualizations on site and/or Virtual Reality (VR) simulations, oriented to inform via the easier perceptive channel -the sight- actors involved in the process.

summary The contemporary design process is assisted by various analytical tools that through its results influence the decision-making. This research addresses the challenge of analysing the degree of influence of the methodologies and the effects they have on the decisions taken during the different stages. For this purpose, the evolution of the design process, the components of the models for energy analysis and a case study were analysed. The results of each analysis were compared to identify which variables and stages have greater impact throughout the design process, where preliminary results show that the analysis of the effects caused by the variation of the orientation and form over the energy performance allow greater savings in the early stages.of energy generation to promote on-site installation of clean energy sources in existing buildings, to ensure a more sustainable habitat.
