summary The general field this presentation will address is the integration of game mechanics within the design studio. The CAAD community has invested considerable energy into the insertion of games within education to teach specific skills or develop design behaviours. Building on some of this research we report on three years of studio teaching in undergraduate architectural studies. We propose that the outcomes of the design studio can benefit greatly from employing game mechanics to encourage constructive design behaviours within a student cohort. This body research flips the traditional location of game mechanic, shifting the motivations from the hands of the teacher to place the mechanic in the hand of the student. The research reports an increased level of engagement and collaboration and presents a body of work that extends beyond traditional expectations of the architectural design studio.

summary Digital Heritage is amphibian by spanning between unreal-real (digital) and real-real (actual) environments. Or its amphiboly derives from a fact that relies not on contrasting realities but a hub from which an oscillation occurs between the real and the actual. Inferring to Baudrillard’s criticism of contemporary art, this paper presents these disparities and ambivalent conditions found in digital heritage by examining a full-dome media-art application called Look-Up. Touching upon the authenticity issue in cultural heritage, a design research project, Augmenting Kashgar, is then introduced on the basis of the claim that a design manner can fuse conflicts within Digital Heritage. Developed within the special context of Kashgar, China’s westernmost city, the methodology of the project that follows a Research through Design (RtD) approach is provided. Making use of the architectural features of Kashgar, designing a digital game as a counter-strategy to existing cultural heritage programmes is discussed with references to Baudrillard’s perspective on video games and gamers.

summary This thesis presents a system that uses games. It allows people to participate in the process of designing an architectural space. The site for the design project of this experimental methodology is a courtyard on MIT campus.The games are initially prepared by the architect through sampling various objects, materials, lighting, and figures from different media such as photogrammetric models around the building site and other relevant 3D modeling/animation contents. The goal of this design system is to collage those components into a final architectural form through a democratic process.The games are distributed to students, faculty and staff who will be the users of the space being designed. Through playing these games, they provide preference about the architectural program and various design decisions regarding formal composition, details, and finishes. This crowd-sourcing occurs both implicitly and explicitly while the game is being played, and the collected feed-back informs the architect about design development.This thesis questions the role of the architects in a democratic process of design: Are we the designer of the space, or creator of a system that controls the design process?.

summary This paper will outline the techniques and language that games use to give design agency to a player. By identifying the discrete combinatorial ontology of games, as opposed to a continuous post-rationalistic approach from general design tools, we hope to develop a framework for the design of ‘games for design’, or sandboxes that allow players to develop an output that is unexpected to the game developer and contingent to a player. This research has been the foundation for the development of Block’hood, a city-building video game that explores ideas of ecology and generative urbanism.

summary This paper outlines the conception and goals of the video game Block'hood, an interactive real-time simulation that attempts to bridge the gap between the digital and the physical. The paper presents the analysis of contemporary sand-box games such as 'Minecraft', 'Simcity', 'Factorio' and 'Dwarf Fortress' to establish a design framework. By understanding the video game medium as a real-time distributed crowdsourced simulation, these games aim to provide a divergent set of strategies and goals mainly defined by the users themselves, and do not impose an overarching narrative or bias. They also allow data collected from the user's gameplay to speak for itself, allowing us to understand the ambitions and strategies behind a larger collective crowd.

summary Contemporary video games such as Mass Effect or Assassin’s Creed emerge as a new form of media and depart from traditional games purely seen as problem-solving exercises. They are enjoyed by a broader audience, similar to those of TV and cinema. At the same time, they are significantly different from TV and cinema, since they place the user at the centre of interaction and content creation. This paper discusses the role of narratives in these new epic games as the main driver behind their appeal and commercial success.

summary This paper describes the development of the StretchPLAY prototype as a part of the Social Sensory Surfaces research project, focusing on the design of tactile and responsive environments for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The project is directed specifically at issues with sensory processing, the inability of the nervous system to filter sensory input in order to indicate an appropriate response. This can be referred to as a “traffic jam” of sensory data where the intensity of such unfiltered information leads to an over-intensified sensory experience, and ultimately a dis-regulated state. To create a sensory regulating environments, a tactile structure is developed integrating physical, visual and auditory feedback. The structure is defined as a textile hybrid system integrating a seamless knitted textile to form a continuous topologically complex surface. Advancements in the fabrication of the boundary structure, of glass-fiber reinforced rods, enable the form to be more robustly structured than previous examples of textile hybrid or tent-like structures. The tensioned textile is activated as a tangible interface where sensing of touch and pressure on the surface triggers ranges of visual and auditory response. A specific child, a five-year old girl with ASD, is studied in order to tailor the technologies as a response to her sensory challenges. This project is a collaboration with students, researchers and faculty in the fields of architecture, computer science, information (human-computer interaction), music and civil engineering, along with practitioners in the field of ASD-based therapies.

The economic crisis forces researchers and architects to rethink the concept of living and adopt more flexible housing design strategies as an alternative to typologies that impose rules of coexistence and do not reflect the social dynamics of a community. This ongoing research is a reflection on the potential of digital tools to develop spatial and formal parameters based on analysis of flexible housing models. summary With an ever-increasing index of digital artifacts, we have begun to exhaust variation as an adaptive technique. The problem with incremental modulation (here understood as sequential and slowly progressing change of a set of parameters within a field condition) is that in essence it leads to morphologically equivalent and, hence, repetitive patterns of habitation. While the role of variation proved key in pushing forward an essential body of research testing and optimizing principles of mass customization, its residual effects become critically disconcerting. This paper presents an investigation of tectonic mutations for the generation of form, seen through data simulation experiments and machining artifacts. Through several projects we investigate the effects of ornament created as a result of the new relationship between generative modeling, simulation, and fabrication in the digital age. Subject to (de)generative mutation techniques, ornament can be under-stood as a result of overlaid data, whether the data is performance related or not, in both massing and surface conditions. This new working methodology will mitigate between the incertitude regarding time, history and memory, and by reinventing their relation it will reassess ornament’s agency within the digital culture. Design methods are extended by exploring, collecting, analyzing, and representing data through various materialization processes. Design is therefore reconsidered as being injected with the concepts of data driven design and dependent on the inter-play between performance and aesthetics. In this way, we consider the footprint - or the subsequent impact - of the human onto the nonhuman using artificial intelligence as a medium. These intentionally or accidentally engraved layers of information begin to describe potential trajectories of novel survival modes in the Anthropocene.

summary Real Time Strategy games enjoy worldwide popularity. Success in this genre of games requires a high degree of skill in spatial and temporal organisation. These skills are typically built upon a foundation characteristic of an iterative workflow. An iterative workflow is also a desirable behaviour in the design studio of architecture students allowing for a greater understanding of parameters embedded within the design and ultimately leading to better learning outcomes. This paper discusses the potential of Real Time Strategy Games and draws connections between successful player attributes found specifically in Tower Defence Games and how these could be used to introduce skills required in the planning of architectural space.

summary This paper presents an approach to producing an interactive physical kinetic prototype and its digital simulation for architects using a series of proposed methods. Conventional architectural CAD applications alone are not always sufficient for illustrating ideas for adaptable and responsive architecture that can conditionally change its states over time. The use of technologies from game design and robotics has a potential to extend the role of architects beyond merely providing static formal design solutions to various spatial problems. The paper introduces methods for rapid prototyping and real-time interaction between physical kinetic prototypes and a digital application environment for simulation using readily available commodity hardware, such as Arduino microcontrollers, 9g servo motors, Kinect sensors, and Unity 3D game engine software with its computational physics. The paper also presents case studies using the approach and discusses possible applications and assessment of this approach.

summary The new digital fabrication technologies are changing the production methods in contemporary society. The sharing of information, within a new logic of production, has the potential to change the current economic system. The present work look after the open source architecture for digital fabrication, through the constructive experience of House Magazine, developed by LAMO3d, Laboratory of 3d Models and Digital Fabrication on FAU-UFRJ. The project, sold in newsstands with the correspondent assembly instructions, aims to popularize the fabrication technologies by its absorption and transfiguration in popular culture. The open source projects and technologies promote the widening of uses of knowledge and technological advances, unlinking them from the big business and generating a dispersion of production. It is up to us to recognize its potential and shape its endless application possibilities.

summary This paper presents a novel web-based platform that supports the analysis, integration, and visualization of large-scale and heterogeneous urban data, with application to city planning and decision-making. Motivated by the non-scalable character of conventional urban analytics methods, as well as by the interoperability challenges present in contemporary data silos, the illustrated system – coined SocialGlass – leverages the combined potential of diverse urban data sources. These include sensor and social media streams (Twitter, Instagram, Foursquare), publicly available municipal records, and resources from knowledge repositories. Through data science, semantic integration, and crowdsourcing techniques the platform enables the mapping of demographic information, human movement patterns, place popularity, traffic conditions, as well as citizens’ and visitors’ opinions and preferences about specific venues in a city. The paper further demonstrates an implemented prototype of the platform and its deployment in real-world use cases for monitoring, analyzing, and assessing city-scale events.

title Interactive immersive experience: Digital technologies for reconstruction and experiencing temple of Bel using crowdsourced images and 3D photogrammetric processes

summary This paper investigates the potential of dense multi-image 3D photogrammetric reconstruction of destroyed cultural heritage monuments by employing public domain imagery for heritage site visitors. This work focuses on the digital reconstruction of the Temple of Bel, one of the heritage monuments in Palmyra, Syria, which was demolished in the summer of 2015 due to armed conflict. This temple is believed to be one of the most significant religious structures of the first century AD in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region with its unique design and condition before destruction actions. The process is carried out using solely one source of images; the freely available visitors’ images collected from the social media platforms and web search engines. This paper presents a digital 3D reconstruction workflow for the collected images using an advanced photogrammetry pipeline and dense image matching software. The virtually reconstructed outputs will be managed and implemented efficiently in Unity3D to create an entire 3D virtual interactive environment for the deconstructed temple to be visualised and experienced using the new Oculus Quest VR headset. The virtual Palmyra’s visitor will be offered an enhanced walk-through off-site interactive, immersive experience compared to the real-world one, which is non-existing and unobtainable at the site in the current time.

summary The article describes a method for gamifying the design and assembly of computationally integrated structures built out of discrete identical blocks. As a case study, the interactive installation Sensitive Assembly was designed and built at the Digital Design Unit (Prof. Dr Oliver Tessmann) at the Technische Universita?t of Darmstadt and exhibited during the digital art festival NODE 2015 in Frankfurt in 2015. Sensitive Assembly invites people to play a Jenga-like game: starting from a solid wall, players are asked to remove and replace the installation’s building blocks to create windows to a nurturing light while challenging its stability. A computational system that senses the current state of the wall guides the physical interaction and predicts an approaching collapse or a new light beam breaking through. The installation extends the notion of real-time feedback from the digital into the physical and uses machine-learning techniques to predict future structural behaviour.

summary The crisis of architecture is a crisis of form, therefore new approaches and definitions are necessary. The children´s game of Hide-and-Seek seems extremely relevant to learn the complex interplay of social interaction and space. What if its hiding places were to be designed by an architect? Is there a method to relate the rules of the game to the number, design and layout of its obstacles in such a way as to create a successful game?A possibility to tackle this problem is the use of metaheuristic solvers. But even for the simple game of Hide-and-Seek, their use is confined to cases with a very limited set of obstacles and players, since the time needed to calculate the fitness function increases rapidly. To overcome this we suggest the use of statistical methods to develop a heuristic fitness function based on properties which can be directly computed from the values of the genotype. The resulting function makes is possible to solve the given problem using a metaheuristic solver not only for the simple cases with 3 or 4, but also for those with n obstacles.
