summary This article focuses on the use of computational tools to provide dynamic assessment and optimized arrangements while planning and discussing interventions in urban areas. The objective is to address the use of algorithmic systems for evaluating and generating urban morphologies guided by Transit Oriented Development (TOD) principles. TOD is an urban development model that considers geometric and measurable parameters for designing sustainable cities. It advocates the creation of compact mixed-use neighborhoods within walking distance to a variety of transportation options and amenities, seeking to result on optimized infrastructure provision and energy efficient low-carbon districts. This paper presents algorithmic experiments for proposing a rapid-transit district, by the optimization of its urban morphology and services’ location, providing an accurate and efficient TOD principles-oriented modelling.

summary The objective of this research is to develop a tool for assessing carbon footprints of a building in the design process using BIM technology. Life cycle assessment and carbon footprint assessment are the two basic criteria in evaluating the emission reduction of CO2e.International assessment standards have been established for mass-produced merchandise and organizational operations. However, the existing standards cannot directly disclose the hotspots of carbon footprints in the building life cycle. An assessment method concerning local climate, living culture, ecology and local construction style is required for building design. This research work presents a framework by which a BIM-enabled data visualization tool is developed to support the carbon disclosure in the building design process.

summary This paper advances the application of computational optimization to design for circular economy (CE) by comparing results of scalarized single-objective optimization (SOO) and multi-objective optimization (MOO) to a furniture design case study. A framework integrating both methods is put forward based on results of the case study. Existing design frameworks for CE emphasize optimization through an iterative process of manual assessment and redesign (Ellen MacArthur Foundation, 2015). Identifying good design solutions for CE, however, is a complex and time-consuming process. Most prominent CE design frameworks list at least nine objectives, several of which may conflict (Reike et al., 2018). Computational optimization responds to these challenges by automating search for best solutions and assisting the designer to identify and manage conflicting objectives. Given the many objectives outlined in circular design frameworks, computational optimisation would appear a priori to be an appropriate method. While results presented in this paper show that scalarized SOO is ultimately more time-efficient for evaluating CE design problems, we suggest that given the presence of conflicting circular design objectives, pareto-set visualization via MOO can initially better support designers to identify preferences.

summary Heritage Interpretation Centres are specially created facilities for evaluation of the cultural and/or natural heritage of a given area and its transformation into an educational, cultural or tourism product. Approach to heritage and architectural means of expression in the creation of contemporary Heritage Interpretation Centres and the impact on users, especially European ones, are presented on the example of buildings from South Africa (The Mapungubwe Interpretation Centre, Alexandra Interpretation Centre, Freedom Park). Field studies of selected buildings allowed an assessment of how effective and easy to read the message of cultural heritage was for people from the outside, and by what architectural means it was possible.

summary Nowadays as the aim to reduce the environmental impact of buildings becomes more apparent, a new architectural design approach is gaining momentum called sustainable architectural design. Sustainable architectural design process includes some regulations itself, which requires calculations, comparisons and consists of several possible conflicting objectives that need to be considered together. A successful green building design can be performed by the creation of alternative designs generated according to all the sustainability parameters and local regulations in conceptual design stage. As there are conflicting criteria's according to LEED and BREAM sustainable site parameters, local regulations and local climate conditions, an efficient decision support system can be developed by the help of Pareto based non-dominated genetic algorithm (NSGA-II) which is used for several possibly conflicting objectives that need to be considered together. In this paper, a model which aims to produce site layout alternatives according to sustainability criteria for cooperative apartment house complexes, will be mentioned.

summary This paper presents a workflow called the ‘heuristic optimization workflow’ that integrates Octopus, a Multi-Objective Optimization (MOO) engine with Grasshopper3D, a parametric modeling tool, and multiple simulation software. It describes a process that enables the designer to integrate disparate domains via Octopus and complete a feedback loop with the developed interactive, real-time visualization tools. A retrospective design of the Bow Tower in Calgary is used as a test case to study the impact of the developed workflow and tools, as well as the impact of MOO on the performance of the solutions. The overall workflow makes MOO based results more accessible to designers and encourages a more interactive ‘heuristic’ exploration of various geometric and topological trajectories. The workflow also reduces design decision uncertainty and design cycle latency through the incorporation of a feedback loop between geometric models and their associated quantitative data. It is through the juxtaposition of extreme performing solutions that serendipity is created and the potential for better multiple performing solutions is increased.es responsive systems, which focus on the implementation of multi-objective adaptive design prototypes from sensored environments. The intention of the work is to investigate multi-objective criteria both as a material system and as a processing system by creating prototypes with structural integrity, where the thermal energy flow through the prototype, to be understood as a membrane, can be controlled and the visual transparency altered. The work shows performance based feedback systems and physical prototype models driven by information streaming, screening, and application.

summary Within the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry, the application of multidisciplinary optimization methods has been shown to reach significant improvements in building performance compared to conventional design methods. As a result, the use of multidisciplinary optimization in the process of design is growing and becoming a common method that provides desired performance feedback for decision making. However, there is a lack of BIM-based multidisciplinary optimization tools that use the rich information stored in Building Information Models (BIM) to help designers explore design alternatives across multiple competing design criteria. In this paper we introduce Optimo, an open-source visual programming-based Multi-Objective Optimization (MOO) tool, which is developed to parametrically interact with Autodesk Revit for BIM-based optimization. The paper details the development process of Optimo and also provides the initial validation of its results using optimization test functions. Finally, strengths, limitations, current adoption by academia and industry, and future improvements of Optimo for building performance optimization are discussed.

summary In order to support exploration in the early stages of the design process, researchers have proposed the use of population-based multi-objective optimisation algorithms. This paper focuses on analysing the resulting population of design variants in order to gain insights into the relationship between architectural features and design performance. The proposed analysis method uses a combination of k-means clustering and Archetypal Analysis in order to partition the population of design variants into clusters and then to extract exemplars for each cluster. The results of the analysis are then visualised as a set of charts and as design models. A demonstration of the method is presented that explores how self-shading geometry, envelope materials, and window area affect the overall performance of a simplified building type. The demonstration shows that although it is possible to derive general knowledge linking architectural features to design performance, the process is still not straightforward. The paper ends with a discussion on how the method can be further improved.

summary For several years great effort has been devoted to the study of Architectural Design Optimization (ADO). However, although in the recent years ADO has attracted much attention from academia, optimization methods and tools have had a limited influence on the architectural profession. The aim of the study is to reveal users' expectations from the optimization tools and define limitations preventing wide-spread adaptation of the optimization solvers in the architectural practice. The paper presents the results of the survey "Optimization in the architectural practice" conducted between December 2015 and February 2016 on 165 architectural trainees and practising architects from 34 countries. The results show that there is a need for an interactive multi-objective optimization tool, as 78% respondents declared that a multi-objective optimization is more necessary in their practice than a single objective one and 91% of them acknowledged the need for choice of promising solutions during optimization process. Finally, it has been found that daylight, structure and geometry are three top factors which architects are interested in optimizing.

summary In property development, the view quality contributes significantly to the property value. In many cases, the architect is constrained by the property developer to take full advantage of the view by designing large glazed facades ignoring the consequence on the energy consumption of the building caused by the conflicting orientation of the view. This paper presents a design tool to help the architect interactively explore different building and window geometries that trade-off energy consumption (kWh) and view quality (€). This design tool allows interaction with parametric building geometry, simulation of energy consumption and view quality, and an optimisation search engine. The simulation of the view quality quantifies a view according to the visibility and quality of its contents by using a novel view-scoring method. The design tool is tested with both north-oriented and south-oriented views and produces a Pareto front from which resulting geometries are visualised.

Le Corbusier, one of the greatest masters of modern architecture, still uses the classical perspective as a tool that allows him to express the pictorial nature of his compositions and to demonstrate his aspirations about shape.

summary Multi-criteria optimisation searches by a genetic algorithm define a Pareto optimal front, a state in which one objective can only be improved at the expense of another. But optimisation is not a search for the best but for better - the goal is to improve performance by trading-off conflicting criteria or objectives. A live case study is the focus of this search with parameters behaving as genes and objectives as the environmental shapers of the phenotype. The genetic algorithm is an effective and powerful tool in the computational design tool box, one which can improve the design process and the fitness of its outcomes.

summary In this paper we use analysis tools from Space Syntax and objective observation of the human behaviour, to understand the impact of landmarks in the walking patterns of users of spaces. Our case study was a large exterior public open space (University Campus), in which participants could walk freely and simultaneously be tracked by several sensors. We carried Space Syntax analysis for this space, and then collected Global Positioning System (GPS) tracking information and used a mobile eye-tracking device to acquire eye gaze information. The collected data allowed us to map and analyse each subject behaviour in the public space. A more specific analysis was done to four selected landmarks that, according to the Space Syntax analysis, were the ones with higher integration values. Results indicate that landmarks with such higher integration values show also a larger count of fixations and saccades of gaze interaction.

summary This work-in-progress paper explores the opportunity to rethink the relationships architecture has with the environment and human behavior. Adaptive systems are gaining traction in the discourse as relationships between the built environment, the natural environment and its users evolve over time. This project, Pneuma-Technics, investigates pneumatic methods in the built environment, composite materials and components, computation, physical computing and sensory actuation. The objective is to advance a developing typology of responsive systems: a breathing architecture that is sensitive to its changing environment. Pneuma-Technics is actuated breath in built form - pneuma, the Greek word for “to breath,” and technics, the Greek word for technique/craft in art. The project imagines the potentials of a soft, interactive surface that allows for the passage of light, air, and human vision, yet maintains enclosure and insulation as necessary for architectural performance. These innovations project new futures onto traditional methods of architectural production and engage in nontraditional materials to develop unique environments. Pneuma-Technics’ is a body of research that consists of tangible experiments for the advancement of soft environments. However, we design for these potential futures as materials, methods, and collaborative action evolve the discourse toward adaptive technologies.

summary This paper presents research on the prototyping of multi-agent systems for architectural design. It proposes a design exploration methodology at the intersection of architecture, engineering, and computer science. The motivation of the work includes exploring bottom up generative methods coupled with optimizing performance criteria including for geometric complexity and objective functions for environmental, structural and fabrication parameters. The paper presents the development of a research framework and initial experiments to provide design solutions, which simultaneously satisfy complexly coupled and often contradicting objectives. The prototypical experiments and initial algorithms are described through a set of different design cases and agents within this framework; for the generation of façade panels for light control; for emergent design of shell structures; for actual construction of reciprocal frames; and for robotic fabrication. Initial results include multi-agent derived efficiencies for environmental and fabrication criteria and discussion of future steps for inclusion of human and structural factors.

summary Recent developments in responsive electroactive materials are increasing the rate at which next-generation façade technologies can respond to environmental conditions, building energy demands, and the actions of building occupants. Simulating the real-time performance of dynamic façade systems is critical for understanding the impacts that occupant response will have on whole-building energy performance and architectural design. This paper describes a method for real-time analysis of the multi-zone building performance impacts of occupant interaction with a dynamic façade system, the Electroactive Dynamic Display System (EDDS). The objective is to optimize EDDS implementation and define system limitations, incorporate EDDS as a dynamic factor in multi-zone building energy analyses, and provide real-time feedback of building performance data based on environmental conditions and occupant interactions. Preliminary results of parametric simulation methods demonstrate the ability of dynamic façade systems to consider real-time occupant interaction in the analysis of daylighting and thermal performance of buildings.
