summary This article delineates the process of developing the project "Urbanimals" - an interactive installation designed and realised in Bristol, UK, in 2015. As the case study research, it draws attention to the difficulties in designing interactive structures in urban spaces - from an architects' idea to a construction stage. There are four areas that are being investigated: (1) Modelling interactions, (2) Negotiating locations and logistics, (3) Developing hardware and (4) Performing the on-site observations. The project draws from the idea of Smart City (SC) as the concept of the urban environment with a certain level of responsiveness through implementing a technology-driven matter that expands city offer perceivable, but gentle and not hindering way. It highlights the possible applications of projection technology and the utilisation of the 3D modelling software which provides complex tools for creating animations, movements and interactions with future users. The article gives clues how to design more engaging interactions and how to deal with implementing them in public realm.

summary The paper presents results of a research conducted in 2015 and 2016 at Lodz University of Technology. It proposes a purpose and context fit approach towards the automation of urban data generation based on GIS tools and New Urbanism typologies. First, background studies of methods applied in urban morphology analysis are revealed. Form-Based Code planning, and subsequently Transect-Based Code are taken into account. Then, selected examples from literature are described and discussed. Finally, the research study is presented and the outcomes compared with more traditional methodology.

summary This paper is focusing on the idea of error as the origin of difference in form but also as the path and the necessity for optimization. It describes the use of Cellular Automata (CA) for a series of structural and formal elements, whose proliferation is guided through sets of differential grids (multigrids) and leads to the buildup of big span structures and edifices as, for example, a cathedral. Starting from the error as the main idea/tool for optimization, taxonomies of morphological errors occur and at a next step, they are informed with contextual elements to produce an architectural system. A toolbox is composed that can be implemented in different scales and environmental parameters, providing variation, optimization, complexity and detail density. Different sets of experiments were created starting from linear structural elements and continuing to space dividers and larger surface components.

summary This document shows a rationalisation method of sheet metal panelling on free-formed surfaces and a case study of it. Ichimonji-buki is a cladding method widely used in Japan for the roofs of traditional temples and shrines. It consists of sheet metal roofing with flat lock seams, allowing for minimal gaps along the joints. By integrating the characteristics of the flat lock joint and a dynamic relaxation analysis via computational modelling, continuous vertical seam lines can be realised while keeping panels almost identical in shape and with a limited number of variations. In the case study of Silver Mountain, the free-formed roof is clad with approximately 8,000 panels, out of which 92% are standardised and can be easily fabricated.

summary This paper is a critical review on advantages and disadvantages of contemporary digital architecture, in retrospect to Vladimir Shukhov's design techniques, applied in the early 20th century. After investigating Shukhov's structural systems, this paper explores the relationship between performance and form, questioning the necessity of high-complexity structures. It will present unpublished archive material of his early work and stimulate a valuable discussion by comparing it with contemporary projects designed by renowned architects. The study on Shukhov focuses on his tessellation method of double-curved surfaces using simple standardized elements. The study of present digital approaches revolves around leading architects using computational tools (e.g. Foster and Partners, Buro Happold and Arup), who have materialized high complexity structures composed by irregular units. Our findings highlight advantages and disadvantages of contemporary computational approaches.

summary This paper presents research on the prototyping of multi-agent systems for architectural design. It proposes a design exploration methodology at the intersection of architecture, engineering, and computer science. The motivation of the work includes exploring bottom up generative methods coupled with optimizing performance criteria including for geometric complexity and objective functions for environmental, structural and fabrication parameters. The paper presents the development of a research framework and initial experiments to provide design solutions, which simultaneously satisfy complexly coupled and often contradicting objectives. The prototypical experiments and initial algorithms are described through a set of different design cases and agents within this framework; for the generation of façade panels for light control; for emergent design of shell structures; for actual construction of reciprocal frames; and for robotic fabrication. Initial results include multi-agent derived efficiencies for environmental and fabrication criteria and discussion of future steps for inclusion of human and structural factors.

summary In this paper, we review and extend the idea of Alexander’s “pattern language”, especially from the viewpoints of complexity theories, information systems, and human-computer interaction, to explore spatial cognition-based design representations for “intelligent and adaptive/interactive environment” in architecture and urban planning. We propose a theoretic framework of design patterns “with spatial information processing”, and attempt to incorporate state-of-the-art computational methods of information visualization/visual analytics into the conventional CAAD approaches. Focused on the spatial-semantic analytics, together with abstract syntactic pattern representation, by using “spatial-semantic aware” graph grammar formalization, i.e., Spatial Graph Grammars (SGG), the relevant models, algorithms and tool are proposed. We testify our theoretic framework and computational tool VEGGIE (a Visual Environment of Graph Grammar Induction Engineering) by using actual architectural design works (spatial layout exemplars of a small office building and the three house projects by Frank Lloyd Wright) as study cases, so as to demonstrate our proposed approach for practical applications. The results are discussed and further research is suggested.

summary This article focuses on the use of computational tools to provide dynamic assessment and optimized arrangements while planning and discussing interventions in urban areas. The objective is to address the use of algorithmic systems for evaluating and generating urban morphologies guided by Transit Oriented Development (TOD) principles. TOD is an urban development model that considers geometric and measurable parameters for designing sustainable cities. It advocates the creation of compact mixed-use neighborhoods within walking distance to a variety of transportation options and amenities, seeking to result on optimized infrastructure provision and energy efficient low-carbon districts. This paper presents algorithmic experiments for proposing a rapid-transit district, by the optimization of its urban morphology and services’ location, providing an accurate and efficient TOD principles-oriented modelling.

summary The paper analyzes the theoretical and methodological approach of contemporary urban design associated to digital processes. This new approach to urban studies is based on parametric design systems in which the focus of interest is not in the form itself, but the parameters that generate it. As an alternative to traditional design system, this methodology provides greater control of the entire process, since the parameters can be changed during all stages of the work. Thus, this paper presents some cases to understand the advantages and disadvantages of using this new way of designing on urban scale.

summary Public open spaces (parks, squares and other gathering places) can only be grasped from a simultaneous view of their attributes. In an ongoing Phd research project we propose to overcome the limitations of traditional-descriptive urban morphology methods in dealing with this simultaneity derived from their many shapes, functions, uses and relations within the urban structure. After developing the relations between formal attributes and intangible spatial properties, their identity and proximity may be disclosed by multivariate statistical analysis and data mining techniques. We outline a multidimensional method for the synchronic analysis and classification of the public open spaces departing from a research corpus of 126 Portuguese urban squares, whose analysis is intended to interactively (re)define it. The work done so far is presented, which comprises: (i) firming the concepts, criteria and attributes to extract; (ii) survey on theories, methods and spatial analysis tools and shortcomings identification; (iii) adaptation and/or creation of new methods and tools; (iv) creation of databases from CAD and GIS environments; (v) research on multivariate analysis, data mining and data visualization techniques.

summary In this paper we proposed a visual perception analysis to be used as a methodology for the evaluation, communication and design of places. The work was applied for the urgent challenge of re-thinking industrial areas which characterize the visual landscape of numerous urban fringes. We used simulation of the present and future of heritage as a design, evaluation and communication device. The experimental focuses on visual analysis techniques for mapping current conditions of the image of productive landscapes. In particular, 2-D digital maps, 3-D digital urban modelling, spherical panoramic pictures, cylindrical videos, Google Maps and Street View, and a post-processing work on photography and models were tested on an industrial area located in the urban fringe of Milan characterized by the diffused presence of productive landscapes.

summary The paper presents the development of a design framework that aims to reduce the complexity of designing and fabricating free-form inflatables structures, which often results in the generation of very complex geometries. In previous research the form-finding potential of actuated and constrained inflatable membranes has already been investigated however without a focus on fabrication (Otto 1979). Consequently, in established design-to-fabrication approaches, complex geometry is typically post-rationalized into smaller parts and are finally fabricated through methods, which need to take into account cutting pattern strategies and material constraints. The design framework developed and presented in this paper aims to transform a complex design process (that always requires further post-rationalization) into a more integrated one that simultaneously unfolds in a physical and digital environment - hence the term cyber-physical (Menges 2015). At a full scale, a flexible material (extensible membrane, e.g. latex) is actuated through inflation and modulated through additive stiffening processes, before being completely rigidified with glass fibers and working as a thin-shell under compression.

summary The research addresses methods of transforming inactive industrial spaces within urban areas as shown on the case study of the former Sisak Ironworks (a part of the research project Heritage Urbanism _HRZZ 2032) . A high level of integration of mapped elements in the urban fabric of the city was proven, which leads to the conclusion that they form a wholesome identity of an industrial city, the infrastructure itself forming a specific type of spatial relation recognised as an industrial landscape. Systematic transformations of these elements are the key to a successful regeneration of derelict areas of the urban landscape in order for them to become a generator of a new urbanity.

summary In the field of architectural design, Diffusion-limited aggregation (DLA) has been widely adopted in the study of macroscopic urban terrains and structures. If we consider individual habitats as having the same gene as our city, the intrinsic nature of DLA provides interesting insights in emulating local interactions that take place at microscopic level. This paper takes the dynamics of the DLA to the smallest unit of designable space. Whilst Phase I focuses mainly on Euclidean constraints, Phase II looks at how such generative space can add complexity to an open office plan by allowing different physical attributes to interact with one another based on the company’s organizational chart.

summary The rapid emergence of computational design tools, advanced material systems and robotic fabrication within the disciplines of architecture and construction has granted designers immense freedom in form and assembly, while retaining pronounced control over output quality throughout the entirety of the design and fabrication process. Simultaneously, the complexity inherent within these tools and processes can lead to a loss of craft though the production of methodologies, forms and artifacts left with extremely recognizable residues from tooling processes utilized during their production. This paper investigates the fecund intersection of digital technologies and handcraft through core-less carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) winding as a means of creating a new typology of digital craft blurring the line between human and machine. Through the lens of an innovative wound CFRP shelter rolyPOLY completed during the winter of 2015, this paper will show the exigencies and affordances between the realms of digital and analog methodologies of CFRP winding on large-scale structures.

summary This paper presents the results from exploring the impact of using a parametric design tool on designers’ behaviour in terms of using design patterns in the early conceptual development stage. It is based on an empirical cognitive study in which eight architectural designers were asked to complete two architectural design tasks with similar complexity respectively in a parametric design environment (PDE) and a Geometric modelling environment (GME). Protocol analysis was employed to study the designers’ behaviour. To explore the development of design patterns during the design process, we utilise the technique of Markov model analysis. Through Markov models analysis of the PDE and GME results, we found that there are significantly more Function to Structure transitions in PDE than in GME. During this transition process, designers select an existing structure/solution for the particular function/design problem based on their experience or knowledge, which is a process of applying an existing design pattern to the problem. From this result we can infer that when architects apply programming and scripting in their design, such as in a PDE, they exhibit the characteristic of using design patterns.

summary Although conceptual design is one of the most important stages of creation, impacting the quality and cost of the final product, current research indicates that designers still lack adequate tools supporting early-stage design. This research challenges that notion, by proposing a hybrid digital design platform for conceptual architectural design. The platform contains four miscellaneous techniques: animation, free-form modelling, associative parametric modelling and per-formance-driven modelling. In a digital design experiment we demon-strate that the collective application of these techniques to early-stage design explorations intensifies the architect’s visual and cognitive rea-soning processes, and hence supports the emergence of promising de-sign artefacts which bear the traces of all the techniques applied in the course of their conception. Additionally, the study also points at some other promising virtues of the hybrid toolset, including: provision of diversified form-finding opportunities on various levels of design ab-straction; the potential to direct designers onto unplanned creation paths; the ability to increase the versatility and functionality of the solutions; and the capacity to sustain design activities of various character, ranging from highly intuitive ones to very rational ones.

summary This paper reports on the process and outcomes of a digital design studio that integrates parametric design and generative systems in architectural and urban design projects. It explores the interrelationship between the emergence of innovative formal representations using parametric design systems on the one hand, and design autonomy; more specifically the conscious process of generating and developing an architectural concept, on the other. Groups of undergraduate students working on an architectural project are asked to identify a specific conceptual parti that addresses an aspect of architectural quality, define strategies that satisfy those aspects, and computational methodologies to implement those strategies, such as rule-based systems, self-organization systems, and genetic algorithms. The paper describes the educational approach and studio outcomes, discusses implications for CAAD education and curricula, and addresses issues to be considered for parametric and generative software development.

summary This paper presents a 3D Concrete Printing (3DCP) experiment at the full scale of virtualarchitectural bodies developed through a computational technique based on the use of Cellular Automata (CA). The theoretical concept behind this technique is the decoding of errors in form generation and the invention of a process that would recreate the errors as a response to optimization (Adilenidou 2015). The generative design process established a family of structural and formal elements whose proliferation is guided through sets of differential grids (multi-grids) leading to the build-up of large span structures and edifices, for example, a cathedral. This tooling system is capable of producing, with specific inputs, a large number of outcomes in different scales. However, the resulting virtual surfaces could be considered as "unprintable" either due to their need of extra support or due to the presence of many cavities in the surface topology. The above characteristics could be categorized as errors, malfunctions, or undesired details in the geometry of a form that would need to be eliminated to prepare it for printing. This research project attempts to transform these "fabrication imprecisions" through new 3DCP techniques into factors of robustness of the resulting structure. The process includes the elimination of the detail / "errors" of the surface and their later reinsertion as structural folds that would strengthen the assembly. Through this process, the tangible outputs achieved fulfill design and functional requirements without compromising their structural integrity due to the manufacturing constraints.

summary Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools are currently making a dynamic appearance in the architectural realm. Social media are being bombarded by word-to-image/image-to-image generated illustrations of fictive buildings generated by tools such as ‘Midjourney’, ‘DALL-E’, ‘Stable Diffusion’ and others. Architects appear to be fascinated by the rapidly generated and inspiring ‘designs’ while others criticise them as superficial and formalistic. In continuation to previous research on Generative Design, (Agkathidis, 2015), this paper aims to investigate whether there is an appropriate way to integrate these new technologies as a generative tool in the educational architectural design process. To answer this question, we developed a design workflow consisting of four phases and tested it for two semesters in an architectural design studio in parallel to other studio units using conventional design methods but working on the same site. The studio outputs were evaluated by guest critics, moderators and external examiners. Furthermore, the design framework was evaluated by the students through an anonymous survey. Our findings highlight the advantages and challenges of the utilisation of AI image synthesis tools in the educational design process of an architectural design approach.
