summary MeasureIt-ARCH is A GNU GPL licensed, dimension, annotation, and drawing tool for use in the open source software Blender. By providing free and open tools for the reading and editing of architectural drawings, MeasurIt-ARCH allows works of architecture to be shared, read, and modified by anyone. The digitization of architectural practice over the last 3 decades has brought with it a new set of inter-disciplinary discourses for the profession. An attempt to utilise 'Open-Source' methodologies, co-opted from the world of software development, in order to make high quality design more affordable, participatory and responsible has emerged. The most prominent of these discussions are embodied in Carlo Raitti and Mathew Claudel's manifesto 'Open-Source Architecture' (Ratti 2015) and affordable housing initiatives like the Wikihouse project (Parvin 2016). MeasurIt-ARCH aims to be the first step towards creating a completely Open-Source design pipeline, by augmenting Blender to a level where it can be used produce small scale architectural works without the need for any proprietary software, serving as an exploratory critique on the user experience and implementations of industry standard dimensioning tools that exist on the market today.

summary With the comprehensive integration of software-based tools in actual processes of design development and fabrication, the boundaries between design and production become increasingly blurred. The methodology of the process of creation changes: the design development phase reaches up to the last produced model in a product series, in the same time the serial production cycle already starts with the first prototype.The aim of this research project is to explore and show the re-strengthening link between form, function, material and fabrication particularly driven by raising prominence of digital tools for design and production. Hereby the focus is on two points: the implementation of user data/input in the light of 'Open Innovation' as driver of form and function on one hand and the crafing inspired aproach of a comprehensive integration of material properties, behaviour tradional techniques of processing into the the design process.

title From representational to parametric and algorithmic interactions: A panorama of Digital Architectural Design teaching in Latin America

summary This study focuses on the context of graphic representation technologies and digital design on Architectural teaching in Latin America. From categories proposed by Oxman and Kotnik and through a mapping study framed by a systematic review in CumInCAD database, it is presented a panorama of the state-of-art of the digital design on Architectural teaching in the region, between 2006 and 2015. The results suggest a context of coexistence of representational interaction and parametric interaction, as well as a transition from one to another and the emergence of the first experiments in algorithmic interaction. As this mapping shows an ongoing movement toward Digital Architectural Design in Latin America in the last decade, and points out its dynamics in space in time, it could contribute to strengthen a crowdthinking network on this issue in the region and with other continents.

summary This paper analyzes the evolution and trends of international conferences addressing Computer-Aided Architectural Design over the past five decades. It starts with the Design Methods Movement conferences, when the possible contributions of computers to Architectural Design started being discussed. It shows how new interests along the history of CAAD development motivated the appearance of conferences on specific topics, and it ends identifying a recent interest towards architectural practice and the software development. With this work we expect to contribute to an “archaeology” of CAAD studies.

summary Working with and against environmental processes, such as the movement of water, earth, and rock, and terrain, has been a perpetual challenge since the dawn of civilisation. While it has been possible to gradually tame many landscapes to perform in a predictable manner, there are many circumstances where we are forced to live with and around such processes in everyday life. This research is primarily interested in the potential of design to interact with such processes. Specifically, we are interested in the designed redirection of erosion and landslide processes already observable in nature, taking the urbanised hillsides of the Alps as test case scenario. The research specialisation continues a research and design focus specialised on processes material deposition of river and flood systems, further down the water catchment chain (REF: ANON 2012). This specific alpine research is compelling in the context of Anthropocene processes, we are specifically focussed in the appraisal, harnessing and redirection of existing environmental phenomena, given what can be understood as our inevitable interaction with these processes (Sijmons 2015). Within this broader research, which has ecological, cultural, and formal potential, this paper shall explore the practical aspects of connecting design, and the designer, with the potential for understanding and designing these evolving mountain landscapes. There is a long history behind the development of landscape elements which control avalanches, mud, rock, and landslides. The cultural, functional and aesthetic role of such elements in the landscape is relatively undiscussed, epitomising an approach that is primarily pragmatic in both engineering and expense. It is perhaps no surprise that these elements have a dominant physical and visual presence in the contemporary landscape. Through the investigation of synergies with other systems, interests, and design potential for such landscape elements, it is proposed that new potential can be found in their implementation. This research proposes that the intuitive linking of common design software to direct landslide simulation, design of and cultural use can interact with these natural processes. This paper shall demonstrate methods to within which design can enter the process of landscape management, linking the modelling processes of the landscape designer with the simulation capabilities of the specialised engineer.

summary The number of variables acting upon urban landscapes is numerous and interconnected, closely resembling complex systems in constant dynamic transformation. Current analytical methods and descriptions of the city are domain specific, limited in scope, and discretize the city into quantifiable individual representations, resulting in an equally limited urban policy and design. If we are to produce urban systems capable of contributing to the robustness and resiliency of cities, we ought to understand and represent the comprehensive network of actors that construct contemporary urban landscapes. On one hand, the natural sciences approach the analysis of complex systems by primarily focusing on the development of models capable of describing their stochastic formation, remaining agnostic to the contextual properties of their individual components and oftentimes discretizing the otherwise continuous relationships among parts. signers work in groups. They need to share information either synchronously or asynchronously as they work with parametric modeling software, as with all computer-aided design tools. Receiving information from collaborators while working may intrude on their work and thought processes. Little research exists on how the reception of design updates influences designers in their work. Nor do we know much about designer preferences for collaboration. In this paper, we examine how sharing and receiving design updates affects designers’ performances and preferences. We present a system prototype to share changes on demand or in continuous mode while performing design tasks. A pilot study measuring the preferences of nine pairs of designers for different combinations of control modes and design tasks shows statistically significant differences between the task types and control modes. The types of tasks affect the preferences of users to the types of control modes. In an apparent contradiction, user preference of control modes contradicts task performance time.

summary The capability to observe the heterogeneous elements of knowledge networks in virtual environments, and the dynamics of these performative spaces, allows evaluating and reflecting on the quality of interactions in construction and recognition mediated processes. This paper presents the first results of an innovative proposal of visualization that integrates design methodologies and is based on an ad-hoc software for taking real-time information. As corollary, it debates about the relationship between representation, design and conception of space in a complex and augmented sociotechnical context, configured and experimented as a web of events that interacts at multiple levels of articulation.

summary The cognitive-theoretical foundation referring to teach drawing as a way of thinking, as well as the construction of the environment by means of drawing using transforming geometries and the formal and para-formal computational process, creating unusual geometries through generative design processes and methodologies, can be seen as some of the main possibilities in exploring dynamic experimental structures for an Adaptive Architecture. This article presents the development of a model for articulated facades, inspired by Hoberman´s Tessellates, and his Adaptive Building Initiative (ABI) project to develop facades models that respond in real time to environmental changes. In addition, we describe an experiment based on the retractable structures, inspired by Hoberman´s work and experimentations. Solutions for responsive facades can offer more flexible architectural solutions providing better use of natural light and contributing to saving energy. Using Rhinoceros and the Grasshopper for modeling and test the responsiveness, the parametric model was created to simulate geometric panels of hexagonal grids that would open and close in reaction to translational motion effects, regulating the amount of light that reaches the building.

summary Advancements in technologies provide Architects, today, with the means to expose new expressive forms using traditional materials. It is therefore possible to design dynamic actuating systems, where several different expressions, or differentiations inherent in the same material, are able to modify its topology and enhance its properties. Wood, traditionally used in construction, is given static expression during its life cycle, where an alignment, or assembly detail, helps retain its original shape. This research outlines the integration of specific and individual anatomical information of wood during the design process. It aids in utilizing the analyzed biological variability and natural irregularities of wood within a material-based architecture, in view of developing a lightweight, and light-filtering dynamic skin. Additionally, the research helps to explore an understanding of the differentiated material composition of wood as its major capacity, rather than its deficiency. Moreover, it analyzes form, material, and structure, as complex interrelations that are embedded in, and explored through an integral design process that seeks to employ typically disregarded, highly differentiated flat materials, in view of enhancing their latent dimensional deformation potential. The main focus of this research is to explore that latent geometric deformation of emerging patterns based on an array of heterogeneous wood veneers in relation to their Hygroscopic and Anisotropic properties. These properties are expressed through a set of flat skins and Mobius arrangements, articulating complex geometric ranges that reveal additional properties, such as bendability and flexibility.

summary Early design phase energy modelling is used to provide the design team with feedback about the impact of various building configurations. For better energy-conscious and sustainable building design and operation, the construction of BIM data interoperability for energy performance assessment in the early design phase is important. The purpose of this study is to suggest a development of BIM data interoperability for energy performance assessment based on BIM. To archive this, the authors have investigated advantages of BIM-based energy performance assessment through comparison with traditional energy performance assessment; and suggest requirements for development of Open BIM environment such as BIM data creation and BIM data application. In addition, the authors also suggested on BIM data interoperability system and developed mapping interface.

summary What kind of tools do landscape architects need to inform their designs with the abundance of knowledge available to us in Open Access data - in the era of 'Big Data'? Although the majority of landscape architects already integrate GIS data in their work, it is often only for analysis purposes and also only with data already integrated in their own country's GIS system. Without further processing, the graphic output formats often cannot reach a state that can be readily integrated into the design process. Students often have a negative stance towards GIS and the software programs associated with it especially within teaching. For the past three years, we at the Chair for Landscape Architecture of Professor Girot (ETH Zurich) have been researching at the potential for students to gain an understanding of the validity of site-specific data by creating coded programs that interactively integrate this information as parameters in the next step of the design process. The key to the entire processing chain is the use of an explorative approach to understanding data as the basis for making decisions.

summary Montevideo has a new visitor. In the heritage building of the german architect Karl Trambauer, located in the Old City, a new presence was installed filling the vacuum left by its former collapsed dome, seeking to restore a message, adding a new vision and recovering the lost dialogue between the architecture, the city and its inhabitants. This paper summarizes and explains the experience of the workshop Adaptation 2015, held on September 2015 at the Universidad de la República, Uruguay. Exposing the theoretical framework, design strategies, morphogenetic development, digital manufacturing experimentations, conclusions and open questions from the experience made. We will go through this temporary intervention on Trambauer’s building, being a rare but symbiotic object, with parametric genes, digital and handcrafted manufacture, and also looking for the impact of theory and academic practices in the city.

summary The paper aims to address methods of realizing computationally generated self-organizing systems on a one-to-one scale with the employment of a singular material system. The case study described in this paper is the outcome of an investigation which has explored earth scaffolding, fabric form-work, and concrete materiality during an international three-week architecture workshop. Real-time generative form-finding methods based on branching and bundling systems in nature have been developed and simulated in an open-source programming environment. The outcome of the simulation stage has been analyzed structurally via Finite Element Analysis (FEA), results of which have served as inputs for the fine-tuning of the simulation. Final three-dimensional geometry has been fabricated by employing fabric, essentially forming the fabric form-work. Fabric form-work is then laid on top of the earth scaffolding, followed by the process of concrete casting. From a pedagogical point of view, the research focuses on the integration of digital design techniques between various design/architecture/analysis platforms combined with basic and advanced techniques of construction within a limited time frame.abstract here by clicking this paragraph.

summary Augmented reality has come a long way and experienced a paradigm shift in 1999 when the ARToolKit was released as open source. The nature of interaction between the physical world and the virtual-world has changed forever. Fortunately for the AECO industry, the transition from traditional Computer Aided Design to virtual building design phrased as Building Information Modeling has created a tremendous potential to adopt Augmented Reality. The presented research is situated in the early design stage of project inception and focuses on supporting informed collective decision-making, characterized by a dynamic back and forth analytical process generating large amounts of data. Facilitation aspects, such as data-collection, storage and access to enable comparability and evaluation are crucial for collective decision-making. The current research has addressed these aspects by means of data accessibility, visualization and presentation. At the core of the project is a custom developed Augmented Reality framework that enables data interaction within the design model. In order to serve as a collaborative decision support engine, the framework also allows multiple models and their datasets to be displayed and exercised simultaneously. The paper demonstrates in the case study the successful application of the AR tool during collaborative design decision meetings.

summary John Portman's work attracts much interest, although little scholarship exists that directly engages his contribution in formal composition. Most of the discussion of Portman's architecture tends to focus on his commercial work and hotels, although a key to understanding his work is found in his personal domestic projects where he has had the freedom to explore his architectural ideas. This study focuses on his first residence, Entelechy I, to begin outlining his design principles formally. The ambition is to open up the whole question of his architectural contribution in the United States and at large.

summary We present a tool which empowers 'green' design freedom for architects by presenting ever expanding choices in components and materials and automatizing their configuration and placement. Several time- and resource- consuming initial design iterations are eliminated by optimizing the energetic efficiency of the building in the original draft phase. The smart, efficient, energy producing building of the future can thereby offer increased cost and energy efficiency, security and comfort, without any compromise in style and form - on the contrary, the proposed tool stands to open up a novel palette of creative 'green' architectural design elements, which would effectively be co-designed by architects. The proposed algorithmic CAD design tool allows direct integration of renewable sources in the architectural design phase, taking into account local meteorological and solar radiation conditions. Furthermore locally optimized evolution and modification of renewable components integrated into the building's structure is possible, leveraging an increasingly wide range of possibilities in form, finish and renewable energy generation.

summary In the past three years, Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) have become an important new way for universities to reach out to possible matriculates, life long learners and alumni. Although MOOCs already cover a vast amount of subjects and curricula, it is remarkable to ascertain the lack of Architectural Design courses on the main platforms like edX and Coursera. Online courses do cover design aspects, e.g. about styles and building materials, but 'design as activity' is an exceptional subject in the portfolio of available MOOCs. In contrast, the CAAD community was one of the first to develop Virtual Design Studio's (VDS) and experimental predecessors of MOOC platforms, such as the AVOCAAD course database system (Af Klercker et al. 2001). Yet, the query 'MOOC' still does not ring a bell in the CUMINCAD publication database (per May 2015). In this paper I will explore a palette of design education settings, in order to find a fit to what a MOOC platform can offer. I will compare the 'MOOC-ability' of Design Education to chances in Virtual Design Studio's and developments in ubiquitous mobile platforms.
