summary As climate and society change, customizing buildings towards specific usage patterns and local weather conditions that might be obsolete within a few years, does not seem to be the smartest approach to building design. Facing the end of readily available highly efficient energy sources, such as oil and gas, we want to re-think the architectural environment towards a symbiotic habitat. The role of energy thus is not seen as a question of supply, but as one parameter among others that shapes the environment. A habitat relies on the physical, chemical and social interaction of different elements and organisms.The authors together with their students pursued a design research re-thinking the architectural environment towards a symbiotic habitat.Full-scale spatial prototypes as elements of such a habitat have been developed focussing on the interfaces between climate, people and other organisms, such as plankton, algae and flowers.

summary The process of projecting 3D scenes onto a two-dimensional (2D) surface results in the loss of depth cues, which are essential for immersive experience in the scenes. Various solutions are provided to address this problem, but there are still fundamental issues need to be addressed in the existing approaches for compensating the change in the 2D image due to the change in observer’s position. Existing studies use head-coupled perspective, stereoscopy, and motion parallax methods to achieve a realistic image representation but a true natural image could not be perceived because of the inaccuracy in the calculations. This paper describes in detail an implementation method of the technique to correctly project a 3D virtual environment model onto a 2D surface to yield a more natural interaction with the virtual world. The proposed method overcomes the inaccuracies in the existing head-coupled perspective viewing and can be used with common stereoscopic displays to naturally represent virtual architecture.

summary This work is the outcome of a multidisciplinary collaboration in the context of the VidiaLab (Laboratorio de Visualización Digital Avanzada). It proposes an application of interactive video mapping techniques as a form of experiencing the Fray Bentos industrial landscape, declared as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2015. An immersive environment was created by enriching a physical scale model of the site with projected digital images and information, providing new and attractive ways of interaction with the cultural heritage. Proposals for future work and educational applications of the developed tools are also discussed.

summary The protection and preservation of historical heritage are important tasks for all walks of life because rebuilding the exclusionary social memory, symbolically representing the nation’s identity. From this reflection, the problem arises of how to make the people appreciate the historic buildings. The Region of Medium High Uruguay, will serve as pilot study on a method of applying to the enhancement of national heritage by the population that is through the materialization of form. It is with the help of computer modeling combined with digital prototyping that seeks to find effective alternatives that use new technologies in the upgrading of historic buildings, a form of knowledge, integration and collaboration. In many areas of knowledge, consciousness makes the human being is connected to the world through all the senses. And touch, as experimentation and understanding of space it inhabits, may be the most overlooked sense in recent informatization times. In this research, the new realization techniques used to attempt to leverage awareness and understanding of a heritage, for a population hitherto alien to the cultural and historical values of a local architecture.

summary Calligraphy is one of the important cultures in Chinese world. The rich strokes, structures and forms make the Chinese calligraphy an art. As the writing script is closely correlated to the emotions of the writer, a lot of scholars explore the correlation between the Chinese calligraphy lines and affect from the perspectives of psychology and art. In this study, it introduces the affective-computing technology and combines the digital media from the perspective of Chinese calligraphy and emotions, to develop an interactive calligraphy-art device. It re-interprets the Chinese calligraphy art with the digital tool and installs the pulse sensor and pressure sensor in the Chinese pen brush, so as to detect the user’s pulse and writing power. Moreover, it converts the physiological signals into affect and provides visual feedback in real time, which includes the changes and motions of the Chinese calligraphy lines. The study proposes contacting the traditional Chinese calligraphy with a new human-computer interaction mode. With the visual feedback effect during the interaction, it allows the user to know the close correlation between the Chinese calligraphy and the emotions. Through the work, the Chinese calligraphy art can be carried forward.

summary The Processing language was created to teach programming to the design, architecture, and electronic arts communities. Despite its success, Processing has limited applicability in the architectural realm, as no CAD (Computer-Aided Design) or BIM (Building Information Modeling) application supports Processing. As a result, architects that have learnt Processing are unable to use the language in the context of modern, script-based, architectural work. This work joins Processing with the world of CAD or BIM applications, creating a solution that allows architects to prototype new designs using Processing and generate results in a CAD or BIM application. To achieve this, we developed an implementation of Processing for the Rosetta programming environment, allowing Processing scripts to generate 2D and 3D models in a variety of CAD or BIM applications, such as AutoCAD, Rhinoceros3D, SketchUp, and Revit.

summary MeasureIt-ARCH is A GNU GPL licensed, dimension, annotation, and drawing tool for use in the open source software Blender. By providing free and open tools for the reading and editing of architectural drawings, MeasurIt-ARCH allows works of architecture to be shared, read, and modified by anyone. The digitization of architectural practice over the last 3 decades has brought with it a new set of inter-disciplinary discourses for the profession. An attempt to utilise 'Open-Source' methodologies, co-opted from the world of software development, in order to make high quality design more affordable, participatory and responsible has emerged. The most prominent of these discussions are embodied in Carlo Raitti and Mathew Claudel's manifesto 'Open-Source Architecture' (Ratti 2015) and affordable housing initiatives like the Wikihouse project (Parvin 2016). MeasurIt-ARCH aims to be the first step towards creating a completely Open-Source design pipeline, by augmenting Blender to a level where it can be used produce small scale architectural works without the need for any proprietary software, serving as an exploratory critique on the user experience and implementations of industry standard dimensioning tools that exist on the market today.

summary This paper advocates alternative methods to overcome the impossibility of realising ‘perfect’ digital designs. It discusses Hong Kong’s 2015 ‘ZCB Bamboo Pavilion’ as a methodological case study for the design and construction of architecture from unprocessed natu- ral bamboo. The paper critically evaluates protocols set up to deal with errors resulting from precise digital design systems merging with inconsistent natural resources and onsite craftsmanship. The paper starts with the geometric and tectonic description of the project, illus- trating a complex and restrictive construction context. Bamboo’s unique growth pattern, structural build-up and suitability as a bending- active material are discussed and Cantonese bamboo scaffolding craftsmanship is addressed as a starting point for the project. The pa- per covers protocols, construction drawings and assembly methods developed to allow for the incorporation and of large building toler- ances and dimensional variation of bamboo. The final as-built 3d scanned structure is compared with the original digital model. The pa- per concludes by discussing the necessity of computational architec- tural design to proactively operate within a field of real-world inde- terminacy, to focus on the development of protocols that deal with imperfections, and to redirect design from the virtual world towards the latent opportunities of the physical.

keywords The paper discusses co-design, development, production, application of TreeHugger (see Figure 1). The co-design among community and trans-disciplinary participants with different expertise required scope of media mix, switching between analogue, digital and back again. This involves different degrees of physical and digital 'GIGA-Mapping' (Sevaldson, 2011, 2015), 'Grasshopper3d' (Davidson, 2017) scripting and mix of digital and analogue fabrication to address the real life world. The critical participation of this 'Time-Based Design' (Sevaldson, 2004, 2005) process is the interaction of the prototype with eco-systemic agency of the adjacent environment - the eco-systemic performance. The TreeHugger is a responsive solid wood insect hotel, generating habitats and edible landscaping (Creasy, 2004) on bio-tope in city centre of Prague. To extend the impact, the code was uploaded for communities to download, local-specifically edit and apply worldwide. Thus, the fusion of discussed processes is multi-scaled and multi-layered, utilised in emerging design field: Systemic Approach to Architectural Performance.

summary Based on our current daily rate, 85,410 hours is the average amount of time that an adult in the United States will spend on their phone in a lifetime (Howarth 2023). This is time spent texting, tweeting, emailing, snapping, chatting, posting, and interacting with an interface which each of us carry in our pocket. Kelly Dobson explains, “We psychologically view the cell phone as an extension of our bodies, which is why when you accidentally forget it or leave it behind you feel you have lost apart of yourself” (2013). In reality, this device is just one of many technologies which affect our relationship with our bodies and the physical world. Additionally, Zoom meetings, social media networks, on-line shopping, and delivery robots, all increasingly detach our bodies and our senses from our everyday experiences and interactions. In response to digital culture, Liam Young writes, “Perhaps the day will come when we turn off our target ads, navigational prompts, Tinder match notifications, and status updates to find a world stripped bare, where nothing is left but scaffolds and screens” (2015). Make no mistake; the collection of projects shared in these field notes is intended to be a counterpoint to such a prophesied future. However, the intent is not to try to compete with technology, but rather, to consider the built environment itself as an interface, encouraging interaction through feedback and responsivity directly related to human factors, finding ways to re-engage the body through design.

summary The homogenization of our current building culture makes vernacular structures around the world extremely vulnerable to desuetude and calls to question how new forms of representation can highlight alternative facets of our built heritage. This paper explores the changing nature of heritage interpretation and offers new methods in representing vernacular structures, highlighting their exquisite atmospheric disposition through the use of state-of-the-art computer simulation programs. The ancient Anatolian region and its vast inventory of exemplary antiquities serves as the site of investigation, encompassing an area that stretches from the western Aegean coastline to the south eastern plain. The results of this study indicate that the intensified development density of these building complexes produce unique models of collective living, establishing a rich inventory of intermediary spatial types that inflect the daily and seasonal variations of the temperate Anatolian climate.

summary The definition of Research by Design (RD) as a research methodology is not yet well established. RD takes its position not only as a research method next to the 'traditional' sciences but also in relation to the creative design practice, where transdicsiplinarity is in essential role. Rather than defining architecture being transdisciplinary in itself, we see beneficial to conduct research together with various disciplines concerning the complexity of the life-world. Also in this interdisciplinary research group we are willing to hold on the designerly way of knowledge production. Of our practical experience working in an interdisciplinary research group shared values, research project management together with participation with evaluative aims were the most challenging aspects. At its best, attempt for genuine transcdisciplinarity was beneficial and rewarding, though sometimes challenging. We would like to target the discussion how we architects, as researchers identify in an interdisciplinary research group conducting transdisciplinary research.

summary It is understand the physical world is composed of various complex systems which behave and evolve in their own way. Through observing the motion of matters in physical world, we can start to understand various swarm behaviours, and these behaviours becomes a very rich library of references when exploring the potential of generative design. In the last 2 years, a new design procedure has been introduced in the digital architectural design studio of ** University. It does not start from site investigation or document research, but starts from any kind of physical experiment which the students are interested in. The students are asked to simulate the experiments in computer with software or scripts wrote by themselves. In the final stage, the students gather information through on-site investigation, and then use the digital tools they have developed to generate architectural design. Since the physical world is composed of huge amount of individual objects, all experiments explored in this design studio demonstrate certain swarm behaviours. These behaviours could be similar to that of the complex systems in architecture, or could imply new possibilities of organization in architecture.

summary This paper presents a method of configuring architectural space that articulates the coupling of an organism with its environment; expressing the spatiality of unfolding engagement in the world. The premise is that space is a consequence of cohesion, effected through constraints and processes of enaction. An Artificial Life model is presented as an analogue of a bottom-up approach to architectural design that takes into account that we as organisms interact with our ever present changing environment and redefine our spatial domain depending on our sensory interaction with said environment.

summary The animation and visual effects industry is producing advanced software capable of generating realistic behaviours faster than ever by using algorithms that approximate the physics of the real world. There is an opportunity to utilize these software to support performance-based conceptual design for complex simulations such as Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). This paper investigates a method of performing windflow simulation using an animation software that implements an Eulerian based smoke solver. These simulations run orders of magnitude faster than the similar simulations in dedicated high-end CFD applications. The paper compares the animated simulation results to a benchmark case with measured wind-tunnel data. The results indicate that at certain points in the animation, the accuracy is very high. However, the challenge lies in predicting best frame at which to stop the animation. The paper ends with a discussion of how this challenge might be tackled.

summary Augmented reality has come a long way and experienced a paradigm shift in 1999 when the ARToolKit was released as open source. The nature of interaction between the physical world and the virtual-world has changed forever. Fortunately for the AECO industry, the transition from traditional Computer Aided Design to virtual building design phrased as Building Information Modeling has created a tremendous potential to adopt Augmented Reality. The presented research is situated in the early design stage of project inception and focuses on supporting informed collective decision-making, characterized by a dynamic back and forth analytical process generating large amounts of data. Facilitation aspects, such as data-collection, storage and access to enable comparability and evaluation are crucial for collective decision-making. The current research has addressed these aspects by means of data accessibility, visualization and presentation. At the core of the project is a custom developed Augmented Reality framework that enables data interaction within the design model. In order to serve as a collaborative decision support engine, the framework also allows multiple models and their datasets to be displayed and exercised simultaneously. The paper demonstrates in the case study the successful application of the AR tool during collaborative design decision meetings.
