summary Multi-criteria optimisation searches by a genetic algorithm define a Pareto optimal front, a state in which one objective can only be improved at the expense of another. But optimisation is not a search for the best but for better - the goal is to improve performance by trading-off conflicting criteria or objectives. A live case study is the focus of this search with parameters behaving as genes and objectives as the environmental shapers of the phenotype. The genetic algorithm is an effective and powerful tool in the computational design tool box, one which can improve the design process and the fitness of its outcomes.

title From representational to parametric and algorithmic interactions: A panorama of Digital Architectural Design teaching in Latin America

summary This study focuses on the context of graphic representation technologies and digital design on Architectural teaching in Latin America. From categories proposed by Oxman and Kotnik and through a mapping study framed by a systematic review in CumInCAD database, it is presented a panorama of the state-of-art of the digital design on Architectural teaching in the region, between 2006 and 2015. The results suggest a context of coexistence of representational interaction and parametric interaction, as well as a transition from one to another and the emergence of the first experiments in algorithmic interaction. As this mapping shows an ongoing movement toward Digital Architectural Design in Latin America in the last decade, and points out its dynamics in space in time, it could contribute to strengthen a crowdthinking network on this issue in the region and with other continents.

summary Based on our current daily rate, 85,410 hours is the average amount of time that an adult in the United States will spend on their phone in a lifetime (Howarth 2023). This is time spent texting, tweeting, emailing, snapping, chatting, posting, and interacting with an interface which each of us carry in our pocket. Kelly Dobson explains, “We psychologically view the cell phone as an extension of our bodies, which is why when you accidentally forget it or leave it behind you feel you have lost apart of yourself” (2013). In reality, this device is just one of many technologies which affect our relationship with our bodies and the physical world. Additionally, Zoom meetings, social media networks, on-line shopping, and delivery robots, all increasingly detach our bodies and our senses from our everyday experiences and interactions. In response to digital culture, Liam Young writes, “Perhaps the day will come when we turn off our target ads, navigational prompts, Tinder match notifications, and status updates to find a world stripped bare, where nothing is left but scaffolds and screens” (2015). Make no mistake; the collection of projects shared in these field notes is intended to be a counterpoint to such a prophesied future. However, the intent is not to try to compete with technology, but rather, to consider the built environment itself as an interface, encouraging interaction through feedback and responsivity directly related to human factors, finding ways to re-engage the body through design.

summary This article delineates the process of developing the project "Urbanimals" - an interactive installation designed and realised in Bristol, UK, in 2015. As the case study research, it draws attention to the difficulties in designing interactive structures in urban spaces - from an architects' idea to a construction stage. There are four areas that are being investigated: (1) Modelling interactions, (2) Negotiating locations and logistics, (3) Developing hardware and (4) Performing the on-site observations. The project draws from the idea of Smart City (SC) as the concept of the urban environment with a certain level of responsiveness through implementing a technology-driven matter that expands city offer perceivable, but gentle and not hindering way. It highlights the possible applications of projection technology and the utilisation of the 3D modelling software which provides complex tools for creating animations, movements and interactions with future users. The article gives clues how to design more engaging interactions and how to deal with implementing them in public realm.

summary This paper researches material agencies, mechanical systems and façade designs that are able to respond to environmental changes through local interactions, inspired by biological systems. These are based on a model of distributed intelligence founded on plants and animal collectives, from which intelligent behavior emerges through simple local associations. Biological collective systems integrate material form and responsiveness and have the potential to inform new architectural and engineering strategies. The design approach of this research is based on a data-driven methodology spanning from design inception to simulation and physical modeling. Data-driven models, common in the fields of natural science, offer a method to generate and test a multiplicity of responsive solutions. The driving concepts are three types of evolutionary adaptation: flexibility, acclimation, and learning. The proposed façade system is a responsive textile shading structure which uses integrated actuators that moderate their local environments through simple interactions with their immediate neighbors. Computational techniques coupled to material logics create an integral design framework leading to heterogeneous environmental and structural conditions, producing local responses to environmental stimuli and ultimately effective performance of the whole system.

summary This article aims to describe the ephemeral qualities that typography acquires in the digital context, caused by the polyvalence of the algorithmic code, which, from generative programming, allows the user to interact with the typographic object. These reflection are realized through the study of four projects: “Lettree” (2004), “Pyrographie” (2005), “Falling in Love” (2016) and “He liked Thick Word Soup” (2014). The observations were made by drawing a comparison between the concept of “matter” in the computational scenario proposed by the design philosopher Vilém Flusser (2015) and the quality of “fluidity” observed in the images created by digital generative programs.

summary This research proposed an urban platform designed to facilitate the sharing of community experience in the spatial context of traditional 'alley'. 'Smart Alley' refers to a smart space in which various urban media, supported with IoT technologies, interplays so that the creation and consumption of media content leads to vivid social interactions in this specific urban space. The proposed urban platform is driven by the Content Management System (CMS). An urban ontology works as a logic model of the CMS. This paper focused on the conceptualization and design of both CMS and ontology modules within the smart alley framework. Outcomes from the 'Smart Alley Workshop' are presented, which was conducted to develop smart services to utilize the smart alley platform.

summary Extensive studies have shown that face-to-face interactions are a critical component in a work environment. It is an effective communication method that builds trust between team members and creates social ties between colleagues to ease future collaboration. In this paper we present our interaction analysis system that utilized an indoor tracking system to provide insights on the spatial usage and interaction dynamics in collaborative spaces. This gives space layout designers and managers quick feedback on the performance of the space and its occupancies and allows interventions and evaluations to be conducted to fine-tune the space layout or organization structure to achieve optimal performance. We demonstrate our system with data collected from a recent international design workshop.

summary A city as defined by aesthetic principles and compositional patterns no longer exists. Form is out and interactions are in. Behavioral patterns stemming from individual preferences redefine what is commonly shared and agreed upon. Now inhabitants not only live in the city; they author it with their daily activities, personal communications, and consumption patterns forming an intangible layer--the invisible city--of interconnected networks, momentary media presence, and human-to-object interactions. This new dimension of the city puts in question past urban theories and organizing principles. This paper looks at the legacy of the past theories as well as new upcoming drives that will define urban frameworks in the future. It specifically identifies the emergence of identities, autonomous agents, and interconnected networks as formative elements of future cities.

summary There is a strong relation between playful learning and the environment children inhabit. An environment can easily turn into a medium for play while its patterns and children's interactions with these patterns can turn into experiences of learning. Developed upon findings from an analog pilot study and built with an open source electronic platform and piezoelectric sensors, our prototype translates children's physical actions into responses of an interactive device. Experiments with children using the prototype support, in part, a unifying approach to designing playful learning environments embedded with tangible spatial interaction.

summary This paper discusses current design and communication imaging techniques in a comparative analysis between three contemporary projects - the first, a new hotel concept in Sardinia, Italy, the second, an urban park in Mumbai, India, and the third, a new housing community in La Prusia, Nicaragua. Starting with an overview discussion problematizing the roots and current state of envisioning heritage, the paper first questions the common oversimplification of envisioning heritage as a strictly aesthetic or stylistic act. Next the paper explores the complex interplay between the design communication methods in each of the three case study projects, situating each in a critical global context. From there, the paper concludes with an expanded discussion of imaging as it relates to design thinking and communication through an examination of the techniques that were employed to graphically communicate each individual project.

summary For several years great effort has been devoted to the study of Architectural Design Optimization (ADO). However, although in the recent years ADO has attracted much attention from academia, optimization methods and tools have had a limited influence on the architectural profession. The aim of the study is to reveal users' expectations from the optimization tools and define limitations preventing wide-spread adaptation of the optimization solvers in the architectural practice. The paper presents the results of the survey "Optimization in the architectural practice" conducted between December 2015 and February 2016 on 165 architectural trainees and practising architects from 34 countries. The results show that there is a need for an interactive multi-objective optimization tool, as 78% respondents declared that a multi-objective optimization is more necessary in their practice than a single objective one and 91% of them acknowledged the need for choice of promising solutions during optimization process. Finally, it has been found that daylight, structure and geometry are three top factors which architects are interested in optimizing.

summary MeasureIt-ARCH is A GNU GPL licensed, dimension, annotation, and drawing tool for use in the open source software Blender. By providing free and open tools for the reading and editing of architectural drawings, MeasurIt-ARCH allows works of architecture to be shared, read, and modified by anyone. The digitization of architectural practice over the last 3 decades has brought with it a new set of inter-disciplinary discourses for the profession. An attempt to utilise 'Open-Source' methodologies, co-opted from the world of software development, in order to make high quality design more affordable, participatory and responsible has emerged. The most prominent of these discussions are embodied in Carlo Raitti and Mathew Claudel's manifesto 'Open-Source Architecture' (Ratti 2015) and affordable housing initiatives like the Wikihouse project (Parvin 2016). MeasurIt-ARCH aims to be the first step towards creating a completely Open-Source design pipeline, by augmenting Blender to a level where it can be used produce small scale architectural works without the need for any proprietary software, serving as an exploratory critique on the user experience and implementations of industry standard dimensioning tools that exist on the market today.

summary Montevideo has a new visitor. In the heritage building of the german architect Karl Trambauer, located in the Old City, a new presence was installed filling the vacuum left by its former collapsed dome, seeking to restore a message, adding a new vision and recovering the lost dialogue between the architecture, the city and its inhabitants. This paper summarizes and explains the experience of the workshop Adaptation 2015, held on September 2015 at the Universidad de la República, Uruguay. Exposing the theoretical framework, design strategies, morphogenetic development, digital manufacturing experimentations, conclusions and open questions from the experience made. We will go through this temporary intervention on Trambauer’s building, being a rare but symbiotic object, with parametric genes, digital and handcrafted manufacture, and also looking for the impact of theory and academic practices in the city.

summary This paper outlines a research project that explores the participation in, and perception of, advanced technologies in architectural professional practice through a sociotechnical lens and presents empirical research findings from an online survey distributed to employees in five large-scale architectural practices in Sydney, Australia. This argues that while the computational design paradigm might be well accepted, understood, and documented in academic research contexts, the extent and ways that computational design thinking and methods are put-into-practice has to date been less explored. In engineering and construction, technology adoption studies since the mid 1990s have measured information technology (IT) use (Howard et al. 1998; Samuelson and Björk 2013). In architecture, research has also focused on quantifying IT use (Cichocka 2017), as well as the examination of specific practices such as building information modelling (BIM) (Cardoso Llach 2017; Herr and Fischer 2017; Son et al. 2015). With the notable exceptions of Daniel Cardoso Llach (2015; 2017) and Yanni Loukissas (2012), few scholars have explored advanced technologies in architectural practice from a sociotechnical perspective. This paper argues that a sociotechnical lens can net valuable insights into advanced technology engagement to inform pedagogical approaches in architectural education as well as strategies for continuing professional development.

summary Applying computational optimisation tools for sport stadium designs has become common practice. However, optimizations often occur only on a macro level (analysing stadium as a whole) and not on a micro level (a view from each seat). Consequently, items on a micro level with design details like guardrails can be overlooked, leading to financial losses for operators. Hence, the research argues that every seat is encouraged to have a clear field of view to avoid financial complications. In order to address this problem the research team developed and evaluated a script that allowed importing an existing design into Rhino. Firstly, the script evaluates the view of each seat via a colour coded response system. Secondly, the designer can select the respective seat, and view the sightline from the occupant’s sightline to various spots on the field to analyse where the obstruction is occurring. This ‘binocular view’ enables the designer to evaluate blind spots from each seat prior to project completion. As the script allows the designer to automate the micro level analysis, the research arguably provides a significant improvement for stadium design by comparing the time used for a design optimisation in a conventional method with the automated one.

summary Extended Reality (XR) technologies have the potential to help and improve the teaching and design process in Architecture and Urbanism, as they offer different ways of perceiving and representing space and various functionalities. Therefore, it is important to systematize scientific production in this area. This research aims to identify and analyze the main applications of XR in teaching and in the design process in Architecture and Urbanism, as well as its benefits and limitations. A systematic literature review of publications on CumInCAD and SBTIC, from 2015 to 2022, was carried out. The results show the growing emphasis of XR as a medium that offers benefits both for teaching and design practice. However, there are still limitations to be overcome to make XR more inclusive. As a contribution, a greater understanding of how XR has been applied in teaching is provided along with a reflection on its impact on the means of representation in the design process.
